01 Flowing into the future Sulfur Creek waterfront reconstruction and green space integration project

Individual work

Graduation Design, 2018.08 - 2019.05 Taiwan,Taipei Advisor:Lin,Bau-Show

After lots of construction of levee by Big Taipei Flood Control Project, and the Yuanshanzi Floodway of the Entire Keelung River Basin Governace Plan, etc. There is almost no risk of severe floods in Taipei City. However, blindly building dikes based on the flood level of the 200-year return period is treating the symptom, not the cause, and that caused serious damages to the creek environment and urban landscape. In the future, the appearance of the water landscape should be improved in a gradual way. Therefore, this project takes the Sulfur Creek with better potential as an example, re-examining the conditions of the Sulfur Creek basin, planning the urban site and designing the corridor space. It eventually making water enter the scope of people's daily life, so that our society will relearn to appreciate and value the beautiful environment of water.

The users in the region of the Sulfur Creek basically consist of 4 types of groups, including hospital(patients),Residential area (residents), schools (students), Park/ Commercial area (commuters, consumers). Hospital is located in the north, while parks/ institutions are located in the south. The surrounding sport grounds and children's playgrounds are numerous. However, the playgrounds are dominated by the standard playground equipment, and there is no proper planning of public parks in this linear space as a whole.

4.

Due to the high-level development along the Sulfur Creek, there are numerous buildings on both sides of the river, most of which are old apartments over 30 years old. Urban development affected the width of the river channel. Therefore, it was necessary to build high-strength dikes to prevent water damage at the expense of the water environment. In order to improve the environment of the Creek, it is recommended for some old buildings to cooperate with future urban planning by renewing the residential area.

4. Traffic and Accessibility Sulfur Creek leads to YangMing Mountain in the north and Shilin in the south. There are many bridges in the middle, including the MR T red line crossing. Because Sulfur Creek is located in an urban area, the density of Youbike stations and bus stops are quite high, so it is a creek with high public transport accessibility. There are levee roads outside the embankment on both sides, which are the access for some residents and the minor access road between the east-west roads.

02 Circulation

This plan integrate with the surrounding space of the waterfront, and strive for the expansion of the stream corridor. Therefore, the levee roadsr are first be replaced while ensuring that the traffic circulation can be adjusted.Second, the partial building space can be replaced by the space of the stream corridor through the urban renewal of the old and abandoned buildings.

Blue-Green Belt integration After the expansion of the creek corridor, based on the aforementioned analysis, the parks and open green spaces on both sides were integrated into the stream blue-green belt. According to the ecological conditions.I rearrange the use behavior of each segment, and plan the ecological restoration and greening about plants.

Linear recreational plan After creek corridor expansion and bluegreen Belt integration,we can put the different activities into each park , and according to the needs of car drivers, bikers, pedestrians, etc., the overall circulation system is planned to make the sulfur creek an easy-to-reach urban water belt.

Study the potentials and limitations of the seven waterfront sections within the planning area. With the expansion of the creeek corridor and the integration of surrounding spaces, the range of creek corridors can be expanded to varying degrees. After estimated based on the cross-section area to ensure the flood control, the height of the 25-year return period flood level drop in each section. Therefore, the creek environment can be improved while maintaining the safety of the inhabitants.

Ecological Water Area Design

11 10

This project selects the ecological water area as the highlight of design. Because the hinterland and environmental conditions of this area can best play the role of coexisting urban space and water environment in this project. This is a plan closely connecting the surrounding residential and transportation spaces with waterfront space. The series of recreational waterfront areas with dynamic and static activities ranging from ecological exploration, education, rest, play , etc. It is expected that through this design, the vision of a green belt that is prosperous with the water environment will be achieved. The life style of residents will be redefined, and the society's perception of waterscape will be renovated.

02 A Circular journey in the Cement Park TCC Heping Industrial Eco Park Construction Project Conceptual Design Competition

Collaborative work

2019.09 - 2019.11 Taiwan,Hualien Partner:Tay,Jie-Gi Contribution:site analysis, Concept diagram, master plan, modeling, rendering

In 2019, TCC’s Heping Factory is about to enter its 20th year of operation, achieving a new milestone. At this point, TCC has also discovered a new opportunity for Heping Factory: The Suhua Highway will soon be open to traffic, and the first entrance in Hualien is at Heping. Thus, TCC decided to open the factory gate and establish a three-in-one industrial eco park in Heping, which will become the first “open factory” in Taiwan. The world will witness the ecological and environmental assets that we dedicated efforts to develop as well as the Truku tribe’s culture preserved by villagers in Heping. TCC operate this competition to welcome architectects to help restructure the community and factory and support Heping to become a new hub for factories and communities to co-exist and share prosperity. 11

Cement Factory The improved Suhua Highway will be opened in 2020, and this highway is connected to the Heping factory as a relay station for transportation, which will attract more tourists to this factory.

Topography

Cement Factory Looked at from the ground, the cement factory is like a giant beast and quietly located here. It has a strong heterogeneity with the natural landscape of mountains and seas, which definitely arouses curiosity of the public.

Embankment The embankment can play a good role as a buffer between the factory and the town area, but the plant-covered embankment may also be a high wall separating the public from the factory area in the future.

Although the existing plants in the factory are not planted for a long time, the variety is sufficient, and it is also quite natural to merge with the huge conveying pipe, forming a major feature here. As time goes by, the plants will also reach a state of lushness.

2. Circulation adjustment

u Suh

Since this competition adopts an open attitude, we boldly made an adjustment of the site area. Our project is to consider the overall park planning, rather than just designing for the officially set buildings. Therefore, adjustments were first made to the inner circulation to solve the fragmentation of the space, and the second is connect the line to the train station to improve the convenience and complete the entirety of the park.

Planning Concept The site is now basically landscape of green and gray. As the green part, although it is the result of abandoned constructed area several years ago, it shows a green scenery where plants grow arbitrarily. As the gray part, includes the parking lot and basketball court, these two places can become the scheduled sites for the new building, making the current green landform an unique part of TCC cement plant. Then the premises space required for the open factory are introduced to the base, and the key recreational functions of the outdoor space are arranged in the remaining space. Finally, as a tourist factory, it is important to be wellequipped. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure the connection between various areas and entrances. In addition, the biggest highlight of this proposal, the air bridge promenade, can provide visitors with a smooth flow of visiting between places. The air bridge can also take advantage of its elevated characteristics, by whcih it can make tourist walking freely in the park, while conserving the existing landfrom. Exploring among the diverse landscapes, visitors will be attracted by the uniqueness of this site.

Observation

Bei-Tun Park was a multifunctional park built in 1980s with children as the main users. The renewal plan proposal is closely connected to the major features of the park itself, the pond and the playground. In this project, we hope that the water is no longer just a pond for viewing, and that the playground is no longer just a field for playing. The functions of the old park are scattered on the site, and disrepaired facilities are unconfortable to use. By re-wovening all the elements with the main concept of the natural playing area and the ecological pool to form a changing green system, which is like an oasis in the future city.

Imagine the senario of an edible garden in a site of 40m2

Starting from my interest in baking, I aim to create a garden full of bakery elements. The bakery industry is booming in Taiwan nowadays, and it has become the prevailing hobby among the public, and even an important part of some people's lives. However, people usually buy ingredients in supermarkets or bakery material shops. Few people could see the whole process of how these delicacies become a food from the earth. So I hope that the users of this yard enjoy planting, When taking care of the plants they choose, they will have a picture of baking in their minds, and experience the wonderful imagination of the ingredients growing from the soil to melting in the mouth.

2018 Terra Flora: Plant's-Eye View of Taipei A Field Workshop for the 2018 Taipei Biennial Project Leads and Workshop Instructors: Jeffrey Hou (Landscape Architecture,University of Washington) Dorothy Tang(Doctoral student,MIT ;Adjunct Assistant Professor, University of Hong Kong) The main component of this project is an international student workshop to be held on July 9-14, 2018. Through a series of research exercises, students in this international workshop will examine the flora of a chosen urban community to understand the spatial practices and natural processes that shape the city and to conduct observations of urban spaces from the plant’s-eye-view. The workshop outcomes will provide the materials for installations as part of the Taipei Biennial beginning in November. Contribution: Investigation of physiology, history about Royal palm, drawing, filming and editing. Video Narrative: Erecting on the campus, Royal Palms can perceive the surrounding environment even if they can't move arbitrarily. The tall body allows them to see wider and farther, and they can not only overlook the tiny people walking on the ground, but also see the roofs of the campus buildings. In Taipei, where the urban heat island effect is severe in summer, people are hiding in air-conditioned rooms or walking fast with parasols in degree of 35 Celsius. However, Royal Palms, they are not just looking down to the cityscape, but yearning for a broader blue sky. At this moment, they feels at ease, swinging the leaves slowly with the blowing of the wind, and enjoying the scorching sun. This is the best season for Royal Palm. Royal Palm's character diagram
