Adrian Paulsen Product design The Oslo school of Architecture and Design Course: Technoform Semester/year: Autumn 2009 Project title: BUOY As long as we have records, the ocean has been a public dumping place. This has not changed. With the intention to raise a discussion about this situation the BUOY concept was created. Through turning a buoy into a symbol of awareness about our daily pollution of the oceans.

We now witness our oceans filling up, something unimaginable just a few years back.

With the intention to raise a discussion about the current approach on addressing oil spill and pollution response equipment the BUOY concept was created. Through its strong visual language it`s purpose is to raise the awareness of the rapidly growing problem with the pollution of our seas.

It is intended to be positioned in small boat harbours, densely populated and high traffic coastal stretches. The aim is to create a desire through an appealing physical form that allows it to be stationed through the season in a public space. It generates its own electricity through a motion driven generator and with a surface texture inspired by lotus leafs it is also self-cleaning.

In its passive state its internal soft blue light gives it an sculptural appearance, but once it registers a certain density of pollutants it responds by releasing its arms of nano paper specially developed to soak up the pollutants and changes into an orange hue to communicate the change. This paper will only soak up the chemicals its been manufactured to absorb allowing it to be active over a longer period of time without absorbing water. These pollutants can later be extracted from the paper and the arms can be used again.

The BUOY is equipped with three different types of arms. There is a top version to deal with surface pollutants and a second layer creating a sphere underneath making sure it has surface coverage even in waves at the same time as dealing with below the surface pollutants. The last arm stretches down towards the sea bottom soaking up chemicals and providing a layered measurement of the amount of pollution in that area.
