PROGRAM FOREWORD Welcome to the 2017 Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival. By taking part in today’s festival, you are helping to promote good mental health and well-being in young people and raising awareness in the wider community. Initiatives such as the Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival highlight the importance of fostering and embracing good mental health and well-being, and encourage children and young people to seek out help if they require it. The Government is pleased to support the Festival, now in its third year. Our partners, Queensland University of Technology, Logan Together, headspace, Griffith University, Children’s Health Queensland and the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, Pop Up Radio Australia and the Queensland Academies Creative Industries have also played a significant role in supporting today’s festival, and I thank them for that. Best wishes to every student taking part today, and thank you for playing your part in promoting positive mental health in our community.

Message from the Executive Director Welcome to Country
Professor David Crompton Executive Director MSAMHS
We encourage our children to play, not only does this help develop their learning and language but also develop their cognitive, and emotional strength. Somehow, in our modern and busy lives as we move from childhood to youth and into adulthood, we sometimes lose our ability to play. Being creative is an excellent way to reconnect with this important skill. Our youth “play� when they are creative, and importantly, they learn. Today, you will see the themes of the festival, Create, Connect and Chat come to life. At the Festival you see in action how talking about mental health concerns reduces stigma and importantly increases help-seeking behaviour in our children.
Aunty Heather Indigenous Elder
Now in its third year, the community in the Metro South Health region has rallied behind the Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival, and we look forward to welcoming new partners in 2018. Aunty Heather is a proud Murri (Aboriginal) woman. She was born into the Hooper Family at St George and raised in Charleville on the bank of the Warrego River. As a younger person, she worked in the outback for 27 years on cattle and sheep stations. Aunty Heather is a social worker and Indigenous Cultural Consultant with the Child and Youth Mental Health Service at Metro South Health and has lived experience as the carer of someone with a mental illness. She held key positions in a number of community organisations and believes that everyone must develop an understanding of all cultures that make up the island we call our country of Australia.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY The Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival gratefully acknowledges that Indigenous Australians are the first people and Traditional Owners of this land. We pay our respects and tribute to all Indigenous people, past, present and emerging. We recognise and celebrate their continuing spiritual and cultural connection to the land. Festival Director’s Message A bi-monthly “Positive Mindset Zine” will be launched this year. It is a mental health promotion zine to be produced by secondary students with contributions from carers, consumers and clinicians. It will also keep all the schools and students updated about the Festival throughout the year.

Welcome to the third Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival in 2017. The Festival is growing bigger and better each year and continues to nurture and develop the capacity of our community to recognise, understand and respond to mental health needs and addiction issues in our young people. Our Festival is open to students in all school levels and sectors, including state, Catholic, independent, distance and alternative schools across the Metro South Health region. This year, we have introduced the ‘wildcard’ option for schools from outside the region to participate in the Festival. Apart from access to the Youth Mental Health First Aid training and mental health resources for all schools that participate in the Festival, just like the previous years, winning schools will now have access to the Teen Mental Health First Aid program for their students as well.
In 2017, we have consolidated our many partnerships and developed new ones as well. We are also introducing the inaugural Positive Mindset Champion Awards, which consists of a school category and a community organisation category, in order to recognise great initiatives and good works being carried out in our community. On reflection, the past three years have been a roller coaster ride of challenges and triumphs in creating this Festival from the ground up. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to work with so many amazing people, particularly the young people themselves, who we built this Festival for, as well as Donna Foxwell, the project officer who joined me this year and was such an invaluable support to me. Thank you to everyone who has played a part in the Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival. The foundation has been laid and may we continue to sow the seeds of positive mental health in our young people.
Following the Grand Final, we will be visiting the participating schools again to maintain our Adam Lo great connections and conversations. We will Festival Director also be presenting certificates to all the Occupational Therapist participants and finalists. METRO SOUTH HEALTH

Festival Guest Performers
LEAH LEVER At only 15 years old, Leah’s young soprano voice is one to watch, and listen to! As a young girl she was already able to sing in tune and she was drawn to the beauty of classical music. She can sing all styles of music but her heart lies in the classics ranging from opera to musicals and gentle ballads from the 1940s to 1960s. She has performed on some of the biggest stages in Australia including the Brisbane Convention Centre and Twin Towns. Leah is dedicated to community service, singing regularly for charity and fundraising events, the elderly, and for children with special needs. In 2017, Leah was named the Young Citizen of the Year in her home city of Redland in Queensland. Leah is currently being mentored by Mirusia through Mirusia Productions, and in 2016 released her debut EP ‘Dream Catcher’ which has already had a lot of success. Her dream is to one day tour internationally, but wherever life does take her, Leah will always maintain her humility and community spirit.
SARAH ENGSTROM Sarah have been playing and experimenting with music since she was 6 years old and has loved performing and making music her whole life. It was when Sarah first started playing acoustic guitar that she discovered her passion as a singer-songwriter, composing her original songs and performing them to any audience who would listen. After beginning to regularly perform at local markets and cafés in Brisbane, Sarah was asked to play at the Sunlit and Twilight Sounds Music Festivals. She has organised multiple gigs performing with her band, SEB, in order to raise money for charity. She hopes to continue creating music which her audiences can relate to and enjoy.

Festival Guest Performers TRACTION – QUEENSLAND THEATRE TRACTION participants will be bringing us a great performance at the Grand Final. TRACTION is a program of free weekly workshops for young people currently in secondary schooling and up to the age of 21, who live in the Logan area. Participants work with professional actors and artists through workshops in acting, movement and dance, singing, writing, directing and devising, technical production and stage management. Participants are able to discover their confidence and to work with respect and acceptance in a diverse group.
QUEENSLAND ACADEMIES CREATIVE INDUSTRIES (QACI) QACI music students will once again perform a song specifically created for the Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival in 2017. QACI is a dynamic school that combines the base study of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program and offers tertiary-level studies and real-time learning within the context of the creative industries.
RED RADIANT PRODUCTIONS Panda from Red Radiant Productions will be making an appearance again at this year’s Festival. He will be sharing an anti-bullying message with the audience and may take some selfies with the students! Red Radiant Productions is a booking and artist management agency which engages with the local community as well as holding charity and fundraising events.
J PERCUSSION MUSIC SCHOOL The J Percussion Music School will yet again deliver another amazing act for the audience at this year’s Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival. Since opening its doors in 2006, the school is becoming one of Australia’s elite percussion schools. Their students have been doing really well in competitions and showcases across the nation in the past few years. METRO SOUTH HEALTH

Master of Ceremonies
SPENCER HOWSON Pop Up Radio Australia Spencer Howson has over 14,000 hours of live daily talk radio under his belt. He spent 24 years at the ABC, including 15 years hosting the top-rating ABC Brisbane breakfast show. In 2005, Spencer was named ABC Local Radio Broadcaster of the Year. Prior to joining the ABC, he was Vice President of Queensland Radio for the Print Handicapped. He presented the ABC TV show “Snapshot”, guest-hosted Channel Nine’s weekday magazine show “Extra”, and has been a regular commentator on Channel Seven’s “The Morning Show”. Spencer now teaches the radio stars of the future at USQ Springfield campus.
ALANNAH COX Child and Youth Mental Health Services Alannah Cox works a psychologist at Logan Child and Youth Mental Health, as well as the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital Gender Clinic and Statewide Service. She loves that her job is hanging out with young people all day, supporting them to work toward their goals, and is passionate about supporting LGBTIQ youth and their families. Alannah used to play in bands, but now just plays her guitar at home and annoys the neighbours.
LORETTA WARBURTON Education Manager Loretta Warburton is the Education Manager for the Research and Learning Network at Metro South Addiction and Mental Health Services. This role enables her to combine her passion for lifelong learning and continuous improvement. Loretta has extensive experience in facilitating organisational learning and has previously held senior education management roles at the Department of Communities; Disability Services Queensland and TAFE Queensland. She completed her Master of Training and Development at Griffith University. METRO SOUTH HEALTH

Meet the Judges Leah Lever Guest Performer and Judge Meet the Judges
Music and Dance Category 15 years old Leah is a sensational young lady with a big voice and a big heart. Please see page 8 for her full biography.
Robert Burns Music Category Robert is a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and High Court of Australia. He established BurnsLaw in Springwood in 1993. Robert is also a musician, playing Tenor and Baritone saxophone in several traditional Ska bands. He has been involved in the music industry in various capacities since the early 1980s and supported international acts from England and the United States. Robert has been a judge for the Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival since its inception in 2015.
Seiko Wong Music Category and Preliminary Round Judge Seiko is Brisbane renowned coloratura soprano and vocal coach and she is the director of Brisbane Music Centre and the music advisor of Red Radiant Productions. She has participated in different cultural performances in Brisbane for the last ten years. She recently starred in “Seiko’s Musical Journey” at the Brisbane Powerhouse in September this year.
Ruby Rose Hunter Dance Category Ruby’s love for dance began at a young age on the NSW north coast. After she completed her RAD training in ballet she moved to Brisbane where she trained with a local company and came to expand her dance vocabulary to include contemporary, hip hop, tap, jazz, latin and aerial styles. Ruby has performed around the south east Queensland area as well as a member for an all female dance crew, Harlequin. Currently she is working freelance in dance/movement therapy and loves working with children and young adults of all abilities and needs.
Melissa Russell
Dance Category Dr Melissa Russell is a Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years’ experience working in public hospitals, community mental health settings and private practice. Her clinical training culminated in a Doctor of Psychology in the field of Clinical Psychology and she specialises in working with children, adolescents and their families. Melissa has also trained as a student in RAD Classical and SATD Jazz and Tap. METRO SOUTH HEALTH

Meet the Judges Evangeline Goodfellow Visual Art Category Evangeline Goodfellow has been the National Art Trainer for yourtown (originally BoysTown) for nine years and has a background in creative arts, art therapy, community welfare work and youth work. She is the founder of “The Body Language Project” art torso workshop and has been an artist for over 20 years. Her work has been exhibited at the Queensland State Library, Brisbane City Hall, QPAC, Logan Art Gallery & Toowoomba Regional Gallery, as well as the 55th Biennale in Venice. Evangeline has designed, painted and facilitated a number of large art projects and murals, and has been selected eight years in a row to display her group works in the Brisbane Festival at Brisbane City Hall.
Lynne Seear Visual Art Category Lynne is a senior curator, writer, publisher, researcher and arts manager with 30 years’ experience in the visual arts, including 16 years at the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG). From 2000 to 2010 she was the QAG’s Deputy Director, Curatorial and Collection Development, where she oversaw curatorial programs and projects that were crucial to the establishment of the Gallery of Modern Art. Lynne was also deeply involved in the development of the Children’s Art Centre. From 2011 Lynne worked on the development of a multifaceted arts program and collection for the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital. She is currently Manager of the Arts in Health Program for Children’s Health Queensland.
John Armstrong Visual Art Category John Armstrong is an experienced project manager and has held executive and senior management roles in higher education, enterprise and government. He is particularly active in curating and managing public art. John has maintained a critically engaged visual arts practice for over 40 years with 36 solo exhibitions, 10 shared exhibitions and 26 group exhibitions and has been selected for inclusion in 50 curated exhibitions. Armstrong’s artwork is represented in 16 major public and teaching collections throughout Australia including the Australian National Gallery and most State Galleries.
Matthew Cox
Logan Together Visual Art Award After chairing the working party that established the Logan Together initiative during 2014/2015, Matthew Cox was appointed its Director in July 2015. Prior to this role, Matthew spent a decade at the Australian Red Cross, heading the organisation’s human services and community and economic development program in Queensland.

Meet the Judges
Danielle Carter Drama Category Danielle is the Director of Brisbane Youth Theatre and the Creative Producer of Room to Play Productions. She is also a PhD Candidate in Drama at QUT and her PhD is titled Community Value of Cultural Participation in Community Engaged Performance. It explores the reception to community productions staged by Queensland Music Festival and Milk Crate Theatre. She studied Meisner Technique at the Actors Pulse in Redfern, Sydney and acting for Screen and TV at Screenwise under Denise Roberts in Paddington, Sydney.
Edgar Venegas Drama Category and Preliminary Round Judge Edgar is the director of IRepresent (a.k.a. Spark It Up! Inc), a youth engagement strategy bringing schools together, celebrating culture diversity & encouraging a better future. He is also a singer, performer and the Community Development Officer for the Logan City Council.
Sarah Woodland Drama Category Sarah Woodland is a practitioner, researcher and educator in applied theatre. Sarah has worked extensively in both the UK and Australia over the past 20 years using theatre in a range of different contexts. Sarah has a particular interest in theatre forms that draw on personal experiences and narratives such as Documentary, Reminiscence, Testimonial and Verbatim Theatre, and has explored these approaches with a broad range of groups including prisoners, refugees, adult survivors of abuse and senior citizens.
Mike Maire Preliminary Round Judge Michael or ‘Mike’ is originally from New Zealand. He is a private occupational therapist. He also plays six musical instruments – guitar, bass, keyboards, saxophone, ukulele and harmonica. Mike was the Master of Ceremonies for the Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival in 2015 and 2016.

Mental Health Training for Schools
More than 35 schools across the Metro South Health catchment and beyond expressed an interest in the 2017 Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival. Thank you to all the schools that entered the Festival this year. It is a testament to the determination and enthusiasm of the students, as well as the encouragement and the dedication of the school teachers, staff and administrators. Congratulations to all the finalists. Every school that participated in the Festival will be provided with opportunities for mental health literacy development such as Youth Mental Health First Aid Training for the staff or other mental health presentations on topics of identified needs, for both the staff and the students. They will be provided by mental healthcare providers from the Metro South Child and Youth Academic Clinical Unit and other appropriate guest organisations and speakers. Winning schools will also be offered the opportunity to receive the Teen Mental Health First Aid Training for an entire grade at their school. Support Team Members There will be a number of friendly mental health workers wearing smiley face badges walking around the venue! Please feel free to ask them for assistance if you need anything. If something you see or hear upsets you, they are trained and available to help. Chill Out Room There is a comfortable Chill Out Room set up once again to provide students with an opportunity to speak with a mental health worker if they have any queries or questions about mental illness, or if they would simply like to chat to find out more about what they do. Photo Booth and Selfie Boards #positivemindset Students! Do you want to take home a memento of the Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival 2017? Well you can take photos in the Festival Photo Booth and keep the instant photo strip. There are also Selfie Boards that you can take photos with on your phone or camera. Make sure you pick up a #positivemindset A4 paper to fill in your own ideas about it means to have a positive mindset and share it with your photo. Positive Mindset Zine The pilot copy of the Positive Mindset Zine will be launched at the Grand Final event. Secondary students will take part in producing this zine on a bi-monthly basis, with contributions from students, consumers, carers and students. The zine aims to promote mental health literacy and an avenue for young people to express their thoughts about mental health through creative arts and writing. Contributions can be made to the editor at email: positivemindsetzine@gmail.com Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival – Art Exhibitions The 24 finalists and winners for the visual arts category are being showcased at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, which started on Friday the 6 October 2017, just prior to start of the Mental Health Week.
