WHAT IS THE HKS DESIGN FELLOWSHIP? he HKS Design Fellowship is an T annual event to donate our talent, time and resources to engage our community in conversation about design and its place in the our world.
This is an architectural design competition on steroids. The winners, the HKS Design Fellows, earn an opportunity to bring design excellence to non-profit organizations with high need. Over the course of three days, the Fellows HKS employees and students from all over the world- brainstorm, research, design and present their visions to the community partner.
Our mission is to recognize and cultivate emerging design talent by stimulating new ideas and deepening our design ethos across our global offices. As an industry leader, HKS’s support for the HKS Design Fellowship elevates the practice of design for our clients and our communities.

THE MAIN STREET ACADEMY HISTORY & DESIGN CHALLENGE he Main Street Academy was formed T by a group of concerned citizens, who live and work in the Tri-Cities area - East
Point, College Park & Hapeville, Georgia. A combined effort between businesses and community members - the group worked diligently for four years to usher in a new era of quality education in the Tri-Cities. Like many charter schools, The Main Street Academy started operations in church facilities. Both churches built in the early 1900s are located in Historic College Park, an older Atlanta suburb. With such a demand for its services, the school wanted design assistance to visualize its future. 10
THE DESIGN CHALLENGE The six Fellows were tasked with visualizing The Main Street Academy’s future home. The Fellows not only needed to visualize the physical setting, they were tasked with addressing the issue of a neighborhood school within a “transitional” part of Atlanta. The Fellows were to give form to the school’s mission - both academically and socially. They had less than 36 hours to present their ideas to the school board and other public officials. BY THE NUMBERS he challenge for the Tri-Cities T community is not one borne from the lack of community engagement, but one of public perception. Like many older suburbs south of Downtown Atlanta, the Tri-Cities must grapple with perception of unsafe conditions. Though demographic statistics from the surrounding environ perpetuate this perception, community members like those who founded The Main Street Academy, are writing their own narrative and stabilizing their own neighborhoods.

IN MEMORIAM: JACK M. FORD “In a sentence, a subject must have a verb...” At the final review of this book, Jack sat me down and extolled these simple words. During the revision process, I saturated the book with pages upon pages of sketches and renderings. I wanted to show the complete breadth of the Fellowship and showcase the hard work. With his simple red pen, he calmly skimmed through the pages and crossed-out the irrelevant pages. When he crossed-out an image I believed to be relevant, he argued that I wrote a partial sentence. “In a sentence, a subject must have a verb. It will have an ending and a beginning.” His sage advice has continually helped me create beauty in my work. I and all those who he has touched during the Fellowship and his years at HKS will always remember him for his beautiful fanaticism. We miss you Jack Ford. HKS DESIGN FELLOWSHIP
