Dear Cattlewomen and Cattlemen,
When I reflect on this past year, I can’t help but think about that old cliché of a “rollercoaster ride.” The year 2022 certainly had its share of ups and downs, and it started with a bang as we were blessed to sell the $290,000 Hart Showcase in our 2022 production sale, where the demand for our genetics was as strong as it had ever been. Words cannot begin to describe how truly grateful we were for all the support from you, our valued customers. We continued our high right into March, when we welcomed into the world my newest nephew, Ozzi Christoff DuPlessis. But, to follow one cliché with another, “what goes up, must come down.” The drop would come in mid-June, when a violent windstorm devastated the ranch. Winds of over 120 mph ripped through the countryside causing damage to several buildings, powerlines, and trees in the area. Of the damage we sustained, our sale facility was hit the hardest, as we lost the west 50 feet of the building. This is where our cattle working facilities were located, and to say it was an inconvenience is an understatement. To add to the downward trend, we lost my great uncle and WWII veteran, Theodore Roosevelt Derry Jr. just two short months later in August. But when you hit rock bottom, there’s only one way to go, and we began to ascend again with the news that my wife Tanae is expecting our fourth child, as well as celebrating our 10-year anniversary this past November. What a great way to end 2022 (and my use of clichés)!
This year’s beginning was bittersweet as my aunt (Uncle Ted’s wife), JoAnn Derry lost her battle with cancer and was reunited with Ted in Heaven. Their marriage of nearly 69 years is the gold standard by which I evaluate my own, and I can only hope to be as happy and devoted as they were. Despite some tough times, we here at Hart Angus Farms did what any good cattleman would do; we put our heads down and got right back to work. With the use of makeshift corrals, portable gate sorting pens, and the old calving barn, we managed to get this sale offering to the finish line. For that reason, I might be just a little more proud of this set of bulls than others in recent years.
Year in and year out Brad and my hope is that every bull we sell adds value to your herd, whether that means heavier calves at weaning, quality replacement heifers, or even a less stressful calving season. We want your cows bred as bad as you do, and we are taking every measure to produce bulls that will get the job done. Featured A.I. sires in this year’s offering include Brooks Bowman 810, Connealy Clarity, Poss Rawhide, Basin Deposit 6249, and Myers Fair-N-Square M39 to name a few. To quickly touch on the heifers being offered, just know that it gets harder every year to select this group of females. This particular group is the deepest we have offered when it comes to eye appeal paired with elite EPD profiles, and we are confident you will like them as much as we do. This years’ sale offering also contains the last progeny of the great Hart Whitney 3206, dam of Hart Showcase, as well as last year’s top selling heifer, the $40,000 Hart Whitney 1095. Her impact will be evident throughout the offering, but if you are looking for a direct son, this will be your last chance. Once again, nearly 50% of the bulls in this year’s offering are recommended for use on heifers. As usual, all bull purchases are protected by our first breeding season guarantee, and we will once again be offering mortality insurance sale day, of which we will pay half your premium if you choose to take it. Also, the entire offering qualifies for the Top Dollar Angus program for the second year in a row.

HEALTH
We at Hart Angus Farms have a complete herd health program which is managed by Dr. Jim Bain, Frederick Veterinary Clinic. All bulls will be accompanied by health papers for shipment to anywhere in the United States. They have been vaccinated for Rednose, PI3, BVD, 7-way clostridial, BRSV, Haemophilus, Pasturella, Hemolytica and Multocida. They have had their booster shot at weaning for MLV, IBR, PI3, BVD, BRSV and Haemophilus. They have also been dewormed with injectable Cydectin and poured with CyLence. Dams of all bulls and heifers have been tested Johne’s free.
GENETIC DEFECTS
All bulls and heifers selling are free of all known genetic conditions monitored by the American Angus Association by test or pedigree, unless otherwise noted.
DELIVERY
Free delivery for the first 500 miles on bulls. Cost assistance over 500 miles and on heifers. Delivery will start March 1. If buyer is unable to accept delivery at designated time, buyer will be responsible for pick up of purchased animals by April 30. There will be a charge of $5.00 per head per day on all animals kept after April 30. The buyer assumes all death and injury risk on cattle purchased.

FIRST BREEDING SEASON GUARANTEE
All bulls selling for $3,000 or more will be guaranteed against breeding injury for the first breeding season. Breeding season is defined as a 90-day period following the first turnout of bull. One hundred percent of the purchase price of the injured bull, minus salvage value of $1,500, will be given credit in a future Hart Angus Farms sale or a replacement bull will be provided, if one is available. All injured bulls must have a veterinarian certificate of injury. We also reserve the right to a second opinion by a veterinarian of our choice. Please notify us as soon as possible should injury occur and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. All claims must be made by October 1, 2023. This guarantee does not include mortality. If buyer desires to purchase Mortality Insurance, Hart Angus will pay for half of the premium with claim proceeds going solely to buyer. This offer is exclusive to the insurance offered at the sale by Hart Angus Farms, and does not include any outside insurance providers. This releases Hart Angus Farms from any further guarantees in regard to animal mortality. This guarantee does not cover replacement bulls.

It’s not very often that we work a sale that the offering is the top 40% of the bull calf crop. The game changes when it comes to quality, pedigree, and data and when you’re dealing with bull after bull who’s entire EPD profile (all 31 of them) averages in the best 25% of the breed. It’s an extremely difficult task, unless you have been selecting for a lot of traits for a long time like Harts have been. The ability to dig deep into the most elite cow families to bring bulls to the surface by multiple sires has always been a strong suit for Harts. Breeding cattle at this scale, with the precision that they do, is quite an accomplishment. We thank all those who have identified this as a source for breeding genetics and have rewarded the program as Harts unselfishly offer the top end females each year. If you can come in person, I highly recommend it. Once you step foot in the first pen, on the bright straw with these massive, attractive, and quiet bulls it’s a real treat.
