SUFFRAGE SCIENCE ABOUT THE EVENT
The Suffrage Science scheme was founded seven years ago by the Medical Research Council’s London Institute of Medical Sciences (then Clinical Sciences Centre). It celebrates and inspires women in science, creating a self-perpetuating cohort of talent that will encourage others to enter science and reach senior leadership roles. The awards themselves are heirloom items of jewellery commissioned from students of the art and design college, Central St MartinsUAL, who worked with scientists to create pieces inspired by research and the Suffragette movement, from which the scheme takes its name. The ribbons from VV Rouleaux unite women across scientific professions. The suffrage movement is referenced with green for hope, purple for dignity and white for purity.

THE AWARDS
B r o o c h b y V e r o n i k a F a ́b i a ́n Pattern of thought – Punctured tape was originally used by computer scientists to send text-based messages, and later for storing data. Decoding the series of holes on the gold brooch reveals sentences from three Suffragette banners; ‘Deeds not words’, ‘Courage Constancy Success’, ‘Through thick & thin we n’er give in’ and the phrase ‘Suffrage Science Award 2016’.
Bangle by Emine Gulsal Mathematical beauty – “My piece conveys a sense of power and strength within women.” Engraved with what many mathematicians consider to be the most beautiful of all mathematical equations, e iπ +1= 0. The bracelet symbolises the infinite, symmetrical qualities of circles. A single, isolated pearl that can move continuously in a circular motion is encapsulated in the outer curve.

THE PANEL
SUFFRAGE SCIENCE
CARRON SHANKLAND Professor Carron Shankland is Professor of Computing Science at the University of Stirling, where she models biological systems. Carron says it’s vital to communicate how important computer science is to everything we do in the modern world.
CELIA HOYLES Professor Dame Celia Hoyles is a Professor of Mathematics Education at the University College London Knowledge Lab. Celia's research explores the use of computers and software in teaching mathematics. Hoyles believes that this approach will help girls flourish.
URSULA MARTIN Professor Ursula Martin is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Oxford. Ursula recently co-published the book ‘Ada Lovelace: The making of a Computer Scientist’. The book explores how Ada’s investigations relate to modern computing and how she became known as an icon to women in maths and computing today.
