SUFFRAGE SCIENCE ABOUT THE EVENT
The Suffrage Science scheme was founded eight years ago by the Medical Research Council’s London Institute of Medical Sciences (then Clinical Sciences Centre). It celebrates and inspires women in science, creating a self-perpetuating cohort of talent that will encourage others to enter science and reach senior leadership roles. The awards themselves are heirloom items of jewellery commissioned from students of the art and design college, Central Saint MartinsUAL, who worked with scientists to create pieces inspired by research and the Suffragette movement, from which the scheme takes its name. The ribbons from VV Rouleaux unite women across scientific professions. The suffrage movement is referenced with green for hope, purple for dignity and white for purity.

THE AWARDS Pendant by Lola Lou Designer Lola Lou says, “I used cells & tissue scaffolds as icons to represent these twelve individuals, and the Medical Research Council.” She adds that bringing together women through the Suffrage Science scheme has created a network of incredible women who are contributing to mankind. Embedded in each pendant are round and oval shaped stones of white moonstone, purple amethyst and green peridot minerals – the colours of the Suffragettes.
Brooch by Diana Dong Designer Diana Dong says her brooch is inspired by “the strength, belief and courage that exists deep within each woman’s heart.” On her design board, she writes, “Under their seemingly weak appearance, there is a strong heart with the desire for growth, equal rights and hope to make contributions to mankind within the fields of science, medicine and engineering. The display device is designed to incorporate the magnetic levitation principle. Magnets will be installed in the base of the display device and the bottom of the brooch, which will make the brooch suspend in mid air,” says Dong.

SUFFRAGE SCIENCE
CAROLINE HARGROVE Caroline Hargrove is Chief Technical Officer of Babylon Health. She previously served as CTO at McLaren Applied Technologies and was responsible for the McLaren F1 simulator model before foudning McLaren Applied Technologies. Now having swapped F1 for humans, she hopes to revolutionise healthcare to cope with increasing pressures using data and AI.
RYLIE GREEN Rylie Green is a Reader in Polymer Bioelectronics at Imperial College London. She works on bioactive conducting polymers for applications in medical electronics. She aims to extend the lifetimes of bioelectronic devices such as bionic eyes, robot limbs and brain–computer interface, so they are effective over a patient's life.
FRAN SCOTT Fran Scott is demonstration designer, pyrotechnician and Science Content Developer at the Royal Institution as well as being a well-known face when it comes to Science on Children’s television. A scientist by education but an engineer at heart, Fran uses her knowledge to entertain and excite audiences of stage and screen, using high impact demonstrations to prove her scientific point.
