hat a whirlwind start to the year it’s been!

Our sojourn in Castle Dracula was described by the Observer’s theatre critic as ‘one of the best hours I’ve spent in the theatre in recent months’; The Ladykillers became one of our best-selling shows outside of Christmas; and the Hoard Festival – wow. Wow. Commissioning 22 new plays with

sarah schoenbeck as Mina in Dracula

the National Theatre Studio was exciting enough, but national interest in the festival was phenomenal. Midlands Today filmed our very first rehearsal; a Radio 4 journalist ‘embedded’ himself in the building for two days, making a programme aired as part of Eddie Mair’s Friday drivetime edition of PM; the Guardian’s Lyn Gardner spent a day with us, moving from one rehearsal to another, getting a flavour of what we were planning and describing it as ‘boundary-breaking… proves what a regional theatre with ambition and imagination can do’. Plus I actually got to sit on the BBC Breakfast sofa. Must admit, I was pretty terrified at the thought of those 1.5 million viewers. But a sound engineer from Wolverhampton thrust a cup of tea into my hands just as I sat down; the studio is much smaller than I imagined; the sofa much narrower; and Charlie and Naga very lovely. Somehow that all calmed my nerves. Even Naga introducing the event as being at the New Vic Theatre, London didn’t phase me. The Borrowers our most successful show ever. Photos: Andrew Billington

It’s a great pleasure when colleagues in other parts of the country see our work and want to share it with their own audiences, because it reassures me that we’re producing the highest quality theatre for Staffordshire audiences. We’ve not always been able to meet the demand - we don’t want to threaten the quality or quantity of work we deliver here at home but one of our plans for the future is to share work we make here in Staffordshire

There are wind machines aplenty, a photographer at the ready and costumes of furs and buckle-clad leathers alongside all manner of bows, arrows and swords. Director Theresa Heskins and designers Lis Evans and Laura Clarkson watch on from the shade. It is the hottest day of the year so far, the perfect opportunity for a Robin Hood & Marian photoshoot.

We talk to our newly-cast Robin and Marian about the highs and lows of becoming the New Vic’s action heroes

Last year’s The Borrowers became the most successful production in the New Vic’s history with more than 40,000 people - the equivalent of one in ten of the North Staffordshire population - seeing the show. This year, for the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta, New Vic Artistic Director Theresa Heskins adapts the legends of Robin Hood for a family audience – with adventure, humour, swords, archery, inventive onstage effects, original music and a happy ending. Isaac clearly can’t wait for his own slice of the action. In fact, he’s buzzing with so much excited energy that he’s actually bouncing.

There was a line from the script which said: ‘they abseil down from the trees’. I knew it was going to be awesome and that I wanted to be a part of it.

Robin and Marian, Isaac Stanmore and Crystal Condie - Crystal channelling Hunger Games heroine Katniss Everdeen - are standing together contemplating how best to climb the chestnut tree which towers before them.

“I love it here!” says Isaac, who returns to the New Vic after playing Jonathan Harker in the theatre’s electrifying production of Dracula. The theatre-in-the-round’s Christmas productions have achieved both critical acclaim and popular success in recent years.

“I can’t wait for this!” he beams: “There was a line in an early draft of the script which said: ‘they abseil down from the trees’. The first time I read that line I knew it was going to be awesome and that I wanted to be a part of this production. “I love making a show in the way that Theresa does, in that devised way when you have licence to play and discover things for yourself.” Isaac is dressed in a Game of Thrones-esque costume of brown leathers, buckles and 7 | www.newvictheatre.org.uk

of giving the hero a run for his money in the daring stakes. “In Theresa’s adaptation Marian is very much Robin’s equal in everything and that’s why he loves her,” Isaac explains: “She’s completely on a par with him in every respect, in terms of fighting she does just as much if not more than him - she’s very handy with a sword and a bow! “She’s a proper feisty, gritty and headstrong character which is why Robin is head over heels about her.” Designers laura clarkson (on left) and lis evans talk costumes and weaponry with the actors.

“It’s such a cool story, isn’t it? Robbing from the bad guys and giving to the good guys, all the exciting adventures living in the forest, the treehouses and the band of friends together.

“I certainly do” he says, grinning: “I don’t want to give too much away, throughout the script there’s action - there’s sword fights coming out of your ears, there are fantastic battle scenes, there’s the archery scenes…

“I remember my parents took me to Nottingham forest when I was about eight or nine years-old and I got my Robin Hood bow and arrow set. I probably terrified my family for the next couple of years shooting arrows from behind the sofa.”

“There’s so much going on, saying that it’s action-packed doesn’t begin to describe it.” Isaac’s definitely got a lot of love for the myths of the heroic outlaw of English folklore. He recalls vivid memories of repeatedly watching The Adventures of Robin Hood as a child, sitting on the edge of his seat with nervous excitement as Errol Flynn battled the Sheriff of Nottingham.

All this childhood enthusiasm should surely stand him in good stead, right? “I’m going to have to brush up on my archery skills, I’m not going to lie,” he admits, glancing at the bow he’s holding which, give or take a foot or two, is almost as tall as him. Photos done, it’s now time to wrap up the shoot. There’s still a good few months to go before rehearsals begin but preparations are already in the forefront of Isaac’s mind. “I think there’s going to be so much physical work in this show that a Hollywood workout routine may be in order to make sure I’m fit enough to keep up!” he laughs, concluding: “The New Vic is such a lovely environment and everyone is so good at what they do. As her birthday approaches and the family descends, all she wants is for the whole family to see Blackpool lights again – for old times’ sake. If only things were that simple! Sister Marion’s finding fault with everything, blueeyed boy Kenneth still hasn’t arrived – and don’t even mention the canary! Terry’s at the end of his tether. Seventeen years ago, war hero Murray fled the neighbourhood under something of a cloud. And certain local folk have long memories – not least Alice, the mayor, whom he left standing at the altar. Indeed, once the welcome flags have stopped waving, few of his friends seem particularly happy to see him back. Murray’s declared intention of staying put and settling down with his new bride threatens to stir up all sorts of old rivalries and resentments. Suddenly, the couple, in search of some peace, find themselves once more in the firing line.

The Community Animation and Social Innovation Centre (CASIC) based at Keele University is to launch at an international summit featuring speakers from across the world. CASIC has grown out of the relationship between New Vic Borderlines and Keele University’s Management School, who have worked together on projects which have changed lives around the world.

Topics such as volunteering, ageing, violence, exclusion and communities in crisis have already been explored within multiple settings in the UK, Canada, Japan, Sweden, Greece and Poland. Sue Moffat, Director of New Vic Borderlines, said: “The work Borderlines has undertaken with Keele University has allowed us to work closely with communities in Stoke-on-Trent, North Staffordshire and around the world. Together, we have explored issues which affect them and have developed skills in team work, management and leadership to enable them to create positive futures for themselves.”

The New Vic tradition of drama documentaries puts the voices of real people on stage; Borderlines puts the community itself on stage presenting drama about real lives. Professor Mihaela Kelemen, Director of CASIC, said: “The international launch of CASIC is an exciting opportunity for Keele researchers and New Vic Borderlines practitioners to share with an international audience lessons, research findings and cultural artefacts co-created with communities in the UK, Japan, Greece and Canada over the last four years via projects funded by the Connected Communities Programme, Economic and Social Research Council and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. “I hope that the launch of CASIC will facilitate the development of new and more creative dialogues and relationships between academia and the community.” Sue Moffat added: “For Borderlines, being a founder member of CASIC allows us to reach out to a bigger audience and to bring about

th We’re off to a great start Anniversary appeal

HOW YOUR donation CAN HELP

Help us make the next 30 years as successful as the last!

As an Anniversary Patron: your gift can help us take our work on tour. As a member of our Patrons’ Circle: your support can pay for a disadvantaged young person to join our Young People’s Theatre Company for a year. One off donation: a donation of any amount can help pay for new carpets, chairs and tables.

When we launched our 30th Anniversary Appeal earlier this year, we set ourselves an ambitious target – to raise £300,000 by the time of the New Vic’s 30th birthday in August 2016. That’s £10,000 for every year our beautiful building has been open.

and we can’t say thank you enough to everyone that has supported us. It is so much appreciated. And it isn’t just the financial generosity of our supporters that has been so heartening. Many, many people wanted to share their wonderful memories of the New Vic – often going back forty years and more – and tell us of the affection and pride they have for the theatre.

I’ve been visiting for 15 years and it’s by far my favourite theatre. It’s a real escape for me!

And we’ve made a great start. Our first target was to raise £54,000 before the end of May. As a Appeal Patron result of our first-ever telephone appeal we were able to do this with a remarkable 700 people supporting the Appeal by signing up to be New Vic Patrons, becoming regular charitable givers, or making one-off donations. Their generosity means that we’ve been able to secure an extra £36,000 in matched funding from Arts Council England. This all puts us solidly on our way

It has been genuinely inspiring and makes everyone at the New Vic even more determined to make sure that this special theatre is around for another 30 years, making a real difference to local lives and creating lots more memories for the future.

The Crazy Sexy Cool Girls’ Fan Club an education Department production performed at the lowry as part of the national theatre Connections Festival.

Every penny raised will go to our work: making international-class theatre; delivering life-changing education and community programmes; and maintaining and improving our iconic and much-loved building.

In return for your generosity, you’ll receive regular newsletters updating you on our work, be acknowledged in New Vic publications, or receive invitations to exclusive New Vic Patron’s events.

Thank you for all your support! The Ladykillers was a huge success this year, and toured to scarborough and hull.

Please support us with a regular donation Anniversary Patron: donate £19.86 per month (£238.32 per year) Patrons’ Circle: £10 per month (£120 per year) One-off gift: any amount you feel able to donate.
