What we do The New Vic was the first purpose-built theatre-in-the-round in Europe and we have been producing theatre at our home in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, since we opened our doors in 1986. All ‘New Vic Productions’ are made here, in the theatre. We have in-house Workshop and Costume departments who cut, stitch, create and build the designs that our Set and Costume designers have imagined. Our Lighting and Sound departments create the atmosphere of the world of the play visualised by our in-house Lighting and Sound Designers. Our Directors rehearse with companies of actors in our spaces to bring stories you see on stage to life. We are proud of our craft, but our passion for our work extends to everything we do – our Education and Borderlines teams create work to engage with people in all our surrounding communities throughout the year; our Appetite team work to engage more people from our local area in the arts. Our Box Office and Frontof-House teams make sure that our welcome is the warmest you will receive and our Catering department ensure they provide homemade, wholesome food for you to enjoy every time you visit.

Last year, colleagues at Staffordshire University invited me to speak at an event to mark International Women’s Day. “Why is the day important?”, a group of us were asked. I fumbled about for an answer - to be honest, I hadn’t really thought about it. But the leader of the Students’ Union had, and she was impressive. It was an opportunity, she said, to remember that others around the world don’t enjoy the same rights and opportunities as we do. That same week, inspired by Brexit and the upcoming General Election, the New Vic’s Senior Youth Theatre embarked upon a discussion about their own rights. Subsequently, the Youth Theatre decided to make a play about democracy and the right to vote. A mature dialectic, exploring difficult questions and finding no easy answers, created in collaboration with another youth theatre who were wrestling with similar ideas. We were very proud of them. Those conversations reminded me: 2018 would be the centenary of a landmark year. In 1918 women in the U.K. first gained the right to express their opinion in the choice of legislature through the extension of the suffrage. To mark this anniversary, we’re doing a play by Elizabeth Robins. As an actor she’d brought A Doll’s House’s Nora and also Hedda Gabler to the British stage for the very first time, becoming known as ‘Ibsen’s High Priestess’. She counted Oscar Wilde among her friends. When she turned to playwriting, her script editor was none other than George Bernard Shaw. Her rarely performed play, the suffragist Votes for Women, is a deft exploration of how the political intersects with the personal. It’s a big, ambitious play with a big cast and a big subject at its heart. Alongside it we’re producing a vivacious drama about the first women on the Restoration stage (Playhouse Creatures) and, in Educating Rita, a comedy about empowerment through learning. It sounds very grand, perhaps even presumptuous, that a theatre sees itself connected with a subject so lofty as human rights. And in the middle of it all, a good-hearted cook called Long John Silver – but is he friend or foe? As Parliament continue to delay taking any progressive action, the women decide to take their campaign into their homes and as word spreads through friends and acquaintances, support for votes for women gains momentum. Before long, people from all walks of life are imagining a different future, and the change in society that could be possible. Persuading the people in power to change their minds however, is another matter… Charged with emotion, this gripping production explores a definitive moment in our history and takes audiences into the world of a campaign that shows that anything is possible.

2018 marks 250 years since that moment and during the year, Circus250 will celebrate this remarkable art form in a year-long nationwide programme of performances. The New Vic will join the global celebrations with Circus Past, Present and Future – a programme of events that will showcase the wonder of circus for all ages. And what makes our programme even more significant is that it will happen in the very place where Philip Astley was born. Our relationship with circus started in 2009 on The Wicked Lady when we worked with aerial dance company Upswing. Since then, we’ve collaborated with NoFit State Circus to present Barricade in Lyme Valley Park; our Appetite team has delivered The Homecoming: a contemporary celebration of circus on the streets of the town centre in conjunction with Newcastle-under-Lyme BID and the Borough Council; and we used spectacular aerial dance to create the seductive world of our production of Dracula. For Circus Past, Present and Future, we bring internationally renowned NoFit State Circus back to town to create their brand new show LEXICON. We’re working with the Victoria & Albert Museum on an outdoor exhibition all about circus history. We’ll host a visit from Circolombia – an inspirational Colombian circus company – and create a wonderful familyfocused Party-in-the-Park with the Brampton Museum. And in Roll Up, Roll Up, we’ll work with The Philip Astley Project on a professionally-led community performance. At the New Vic, we’re creating two brand new productions. Theresa Heskins will direct Astley’s Astounding Adventures, a new play written by Stone-born Frazer Flintham about Astley’s extraordinary life, and Cabinet of Curiosities will take audiences on an immersive journey into the fantastical world of circus. All this is made possible thanks to the fantastic support of Arts Council England and you can find out more details about the first part of the programme over the page. Themes and Stories Mon 26 March – Sat 21 April Giving an insight into the creation of a circus show, this exhibition will capture memories from NoFit State Circus’ development process as they create their brand new production in Newcastle-under-Lyme. The outdoor exhibition, displayed around NoFit State Circus’ tent, will showcase the imprint of circus on the local area and the stories that have fed into the creative development process.

No Fit State Circus Exhibition Mon 26 March – Sat 14 April To coincide with the world première of LEXICON in Newcastle-under-Lyme town centre, the New Vic will take a look back at 30 years of NoFit State Circus with a special exhibition. Exploring the photographic archive of the contemporary circus company, images will range from their formation in 1986, through to their more recent productions such as Bianco and Block.

CIRCUS! In partnership with the V&A and Appetite Mon 2 April – Mon 30 July In association with the Victoria & Albert Museum, this exhibition held in the centre of Newcastle-under-Lyme will use images of original prints and drawings and stunning photographs, old and new, to follow the progress of circus as it travelled across the world, illustrating some of its remarkable acts, characters and developments along the way, and showcasing this phenomenal artform on a grand scale.

Vibrant music for wind instruments takes centre stage in Ensemble 360’s programme. New Vic Borderlines Our award-winning Borderlines programme places the local community at the heart of its work. Engaging with individuals, groups and communities facing challenges – social and economic disadvantage, young people at risk of offending, adults with learning difficulties and others at risk of being marginalised – through Borderlines we use theatre to help people find new and positive ways to understand themselves, their communities and their responsibilities. Promoting social inclusion and diversity, we undertake projects in partnership with a wide range of partners and focus on challenging destructive and anti-social behaviour, building individuals’ self-awareness and self-worth and helping to develop positive attitudes. With an aim to positively stimulate social change, Borderlines has been recognised as a leading national model for how theatre can be used to impact on our society, and recent documentary theatre projects we have worked on have focused on exploring challenging issues such as racism, discrimination and domestic violence.

This season look out for: Message Not Delivered back on tour We’re taking our production of Message Not Delivered back out on the road. An interactive docu-drama, the play is based on the stories of young people whose lives have been changed forever by road traffic accidents, and the experiences of professionals from rescue and emergency services and is aimed at young people, exploring key areas of risk for this group. Beginning at Newcastle-under-Lyme College and then touring to schools and colleges in Staffordshire and the West Midlands from Mon 13 – Fri 24 November, this is our third tour of the innovative production, made possible thanks to support from West Midlands Fire Service. New Vic Education Our Education Team provides creative learning for everyone - pre-school and upwards - through theatre-based opportunities and activities. With a wide range of Drama Clubs, Youth Theatre and Holiday Projects available, young people can enjoy opportunities to work with professionals to develop their personal skills, build confidence and have fun. School groups can take part in an extensive year-long programme of cross-curricular workshops using drama as a means of learning for Key Stages 1, 2 and 3. As a Regional Theatre Partner for the RSC’s Associate Schools Programme, we introduce younger audiences to accessible versions of Shakespeare’s well-known works through First Encounter productions and offer chances for children to perform the plays themselves in the annual Schools Festival supported by Keele University. For older adults our Ages and Stages programme encourages people of all ages to participate in, and enjoy drama and creative work.

The Royal Shakespeare Company return to Newcastle-under-Lyme with their First Encounters with Shakespeare series, this time tackling one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays – Julius Caesar. Using Shakespeare’s original language, these engaging adaptations are a fantastic first experience for anyone who is apprehensive about the Bard’s work, and particularly suited for children, families and schools. Taking audiences into the heart of the story, First Encounters make the plays easy to follow, understand and enjoy. The New Vic

Chief Electrician and Resident Lighting Designer, Daniella Beattie, shines a spotlight on her role.

When you start working at the New Vic you soon learn that being part of technical tests and trials in the auditorium with Resident Lighting Designer and Chief Electrician Daniella Beattie is par for the course. Be it setting up a time-lapse video from the lighting grid, filming slow motion effects or experimenting with new projectors, there’s always something to get involved in. On the day we speak she has just emerged from the ‘trap’ below the stage where she and her Deputy, Peter Morgan, have been building a flying frame which will shortly be tested by Technical Assistant Stage Manager, Liam Shepherd. In May, Daniella marked 20 years working at the theatre-in-the-round. Quite a feat. “It’s that family aspect of the building that makes it so completely unique being here, it makes people want to stay,” she says. Describing herself as a ‘Blue Peter girl at heart’, Daniella tells us she’s always loved making things and theatre but from a backstage point of view. After becoming acquainted with the New Vic while at college in Telford, she studied Theatre Design and Technology at Bretton Hall, formerly part of University of Leeds. During her course, she completed a spell of work experience at the New Vic which led to her joining the theatre’s casual technical team, assisting with lighting fit ups and programming lighting control desks. After becoming the New Vic’s Assistant Technician in 1997, she worked her way up to the Deputy Chief Electrician role in 1998

before being becoming Resident Lighting Designer and Chief Electrician in 2000. “Anything that lights up, whizzes, goes bang or flies in the sky above you comes under my remit,” she explains: “The Chief Electrician’s job concerns the physical side - ensuring things are electrically safe, putting electrics into props, managing staff and getting all the technical aspects ready for any production or concert on our stage. “The Lighting Designer role is much more creative in that you take the script and ideas of Directors and Designers and make them look beautiful under light on stage. I like being creative but I equally enjoy working within the bounds of physics.” For Daniella, stories play a big part in her life. During tech week (when productions move from the rehearsal room to the stage) you’ll often find her in a quiet corner Skyping storytime to her two young children at home. “I love stories so what’s really great about working here is pretty much every four weeks you’ve got a new story to work on,” she says: “My lighting designs start from reading the script when you develop your first ideas about what it might be, what the subject is. Then you speak with the Director and Designer.” Lighting in theatre has three main functions, Daniella explains: “Firstly, and simply, actors need to be seen. Secondly, it tells your audience where to look, and thirdly, it adds emotional content and subtly lets people know how you want them to feel. “Working in-the-round makes the job more interesting as we can’t use large scenery so our Lighting and Sound teams work closely together to tell people where they are.” Photos from L-R: Dracula (2015); The Wicked Lady (2009); The Snow Queen (2016)

And ever-changing technology plays a big part in Daniella’s day-to-day responsibilities too which she clearly relishes. “Technology is developing all the time so it’s very important we keep up,” she says: “It can be a great labour saver. It allows us to do much more and use our existing kit more effectively. “We try something new in each show, whether it’s a new colour, a new design programmed into our control desk, new positions for our lanterns or projection – like in Anna Of The Five Towns and The Pitmen Painters. We are always looking to increase our knowledge.” Having had a catch up meeting with Treasure Island’s production team this morning, the Christmas show is in the forefront of Daniella’s mind but she’s not giving anything away other than there will be plenty of excitement and treasure galore, of course. Set to design numerous productions in 2018, other ideas are buzzing away in her head, with the self-admitted list maker having a notepad for each to keep all her designs in check. “I like the variety of working here, no two days are the same” Daniella concludes: “Although we’re working with the same instruments, each production is different as you’re telling a new story every time. “I work with a good bunch of people who all have the same goal at heart - staging great productions for people to come and see and enjoy.” Treasure Island will be the first production to benefit from new lighting, bought specifically for our auditorium following our recent fundraising appeal, which helped raise £25,000 for new equipment.

Feasts for the senses… This summer our Appetite programme offered up a sizzling summer programme of world-class events in Stoke-on-Trent. In July, 3,000 people joined us to enjoy Water Fools by French company ilotopie, where Central Forest Park lake was transformed into a giant stage. This spectacular performance took place entirely on water, and featured cars, bikes and beds, astonishing original music and a fantastic array of fireworks - all combining to create a dreamlike and visually stunning performance.

Across the August Bank Holiday weekend, Appetite then served a feast for the senses as one of the highlights of Stokeon-Trent’s cultural calendar, The Big Feast Festival, returned to the city’s streets. From a hip-hop dance performance about football fans to the Royal Opera House performing Swan Lake outside Hanley Bus Station, the festival was jam-packed with plenty of special moments for people to relish. 16,655 people visited the city centre during the Big Feast weekend, of which 76% were there specifically for the festival

Appetite is led by the New Vic in partnership with Partners in Creative Learning, 6Towns Radio and Staffordshire University and is part of the Creative People and Places programme. Stoke-on-Trent train station is a 10-minute drive from the theatre, and has services connecting to Birmingham, Manchester, Derby, Stafford, Crewe and London. There is a taxi rank directly outside the train station entrance.

On busy performances where our car park is full, alternative parking is available on King Street Car Park, approx. a 5 minute walk from the theatre; charges apply. As we are located in a residential area, we kindly ask customers to park in the recommended car parks and not on adjacent KIDSGROVE J16
