Treasure Hunting I

t’s rare that a theatre like the new Vic gets to commission twenty-two pieces of work all at once, but that’s exactly what we’ve been able to do this year as part of our festival inspired by the staffordshire hoard. Theatre makers of all kinds – playwrights, digital artists, performers – have joined us in Staffordshire from all over the country,

working with us and our local museums to find out more about the Hoard and about the New Vic’s audience. We’ve also been working at our ‘home from home’ the National Theatre Studio, where I and our Hoard playwrights have been building up a head of steam over a hot laptop or twenty-two. The other 21 artists have been working on flights of imagination inspired by the subject of the Hoard: but I, inspired by the New Vic and Peter Cheeseman’s pioneering social documentaries, have been creating a verbatim piece. I’m going to be telling the story of the

Staffordshire Hoard since it was found, and in the words of the people connected with it. I’ve collected hours and hours and hours of audio interviews with metal detectorists, re-enactors and weapons makers. I’ve talked to the man who found the Hoard and to the archaeologists who were first on the scene. I’ve heard from the public, too, about why it’s important to Staffordshire. It’s been a fascinating journey for me, and a very personal one, too. The offices and rehearsal rooms of the National Theatre Studio look out over what was ‘my’ part of London – the hospital I was born in; the flats I grew up in; the streets I played on. But playing in my ears have been the rich Stokie and Black Country voices of my

adoptive home region, the West Midlands. We’ll be inviting you to dig into this treasure chest of plays, the New Vic’s very own Hoard, next summer. Before that, though, we have a spine tingling treat for the dark nights: a season of witches and vampires; and then our first ever co-production with Hull Truck Theatre (we’re almost as thrilled as they are that their home town will be European City of Culture in 2016). I hope you’ll enjoy the productions we have coming up as much as I’m enjoying making them.

o say aerialist Vicki amedume has led an interesting life would be something of an understatement. not very many people have tamed tigers, ridden elephants and flown through the air clad in ‘spangly’ attire as a trapeze artist. This is someone who can truly say that she ran away with the circus.

With her company, Upswing, Vicki taught the New Vic how to fly in The Wicked Lady and Peter Pan and left crowds of thousands breathless with Phoenix from the Flames which welcomed the Olympic Torch to Stoke-on-Trent. She returns to the theatrein-the-round in the spring to take New Vic Artistic Director, Theresa Heskins’, adaption of Dracula to new heights. For this interview, she’s not hanging by her ankles a scary number of feet up in the air but sitting in the less extreme surroundings of Upswing’s London office. It won’t be long before she’s shimmying back up the silks however, as there’s a workshop to lead in half an hour.

We talk to aerialist extraordinaire Vicki Amedume about teaching the New Vic how to fly, the thrills and spills of her life and running away with the circus.

Vicki’s passion for what she does shines through in every word, so it comes as a surprise to be told that her childhood ambitions did not lie in the world of performance but in becoming a scientist. “I imagined being in a laboratory working on Nobel Prize winning research,” she laughs: “But something changed; I got involved in Photo: Hilary Shedel Photography

circus performing in my twenties and I fell in love with it. I’ve always been quite academic; that world felt very safe to me, but I got swept into the lifestyle of circus – it was the most fun I have ever had.” After being introduced to the art form by a ‘radical family company’ Vicki trained with a contemporary company in France before heading State-side and joining a traditional circus with acrobats, clowns and stunts galore. “I was wearing all the spangly costumes doing trapeze and did a bit of tiger training,” she recalls, as if taming tigers is the most normal thing in the world. But it was the aerial work, which saw her train for upwards of 16 hours a week in her peak performing days, which captivated her the most. “It was physically challenging and exciting. When I first started aerial work it was really difficult and I’ve always gravitated to doing something that I can’t do; it fascinates me much more than doing something I can do,” she says: “It made me feel extraordinary to be able to do things that other people couldn’t.” Vicki moved to England from Ghana when she was seven-years-old. Unable to speak English, she spent the first year of her life in the UK interpreting people through their gestures, something she credits as influencing her work today. “I grew to love words but I feel there is a level 7 | www.newvictheatre.org.uk

While her venture into performance may have seemingly sprung from nowhere, Vicki’s love of stories does stem from childhood. “One of the things my mum did to keep our own language alive was tell us stories; she used to record bedtime stories for us,” she recounts: “She worked nights, so when she wasn’t there we used to listen to her and our language.”

Vicki founded Upswing from her bedroom in 2004 with a view to expanding her work as a solo aerialist and choreographer while developing her directorial skills. Since then, the company has worked with the likes of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre of Scotland and was invited to take part in Melbourne’s Commonwealth Games’ Cultural Festival. The early days of Upswing firmly cemented Vicki’s relationship with the New Vic after she teamed up with the theatre for Bryony Lavery’s The Wicked Lady and Theresa Heskins’ acclaimed adaptation of Peter Pan. “We might have helped teach the New Vic how to fly but the New Vic has taught me so much,” she says fondly: “Seeing how work is made

More recently, Vicki found herself back in North Staffordshire working with the New Vic-led Appetite programme, bringing the world of Upswing to Stoke-on-Trent families in development of her latest piece, Bedtime Stories. “Community work is essential to what we do,” says Vicki, who adds that a current Upswing project will see pensioners take flight in a series of aerial workshops. “That work fascinates me; I’m in this for making art, but if what we do has an impact beyond making a great show then that’s brilliant,” she enthuses before discussing her career in general: “I’m very lucky with the career I’ve chosen as one thing I can’t bear is being bored. Compulsive Hoarder Gemma Fairlie talks about getting on board with a treasure trove of treats in the New Vic’s Hoard festival… Meet Gemma Fairlie, the newly appointed Associate Director on the New Vic’s Hoard festival - a festival of plays inspired by the Staffordshire Hoard. The Hoard festival, which has been developed in partnership with the National Theatre Studio, will take over the entire theatre for six weeks in summer 2015. Gemma’s first Hoard task saw her spend two weeks working at the NT Studio with New Vic Artistic Director, Theresa Heskins, and artists who are creating 21 pieces for the festival, each responding to the discovery of the greatest hoard of Anglo-Saxon treasure ever found.

Photo: James D. Reid

It’s the New Vic’s boldest adventure to date, and Gemma clearly can’t wait to get started.

Gemma said: “For six weeks the New Vic’s Hoard festival will see shows take place in the main-house, studio, bar and maybe in some unexpected locations around the building. There will be a new documentary, plays which tell the stories of the Hoard's past and present, a one woman show from an Olivier Awards nominated artist, a huge community project and much more. “Comedy, drama, fantasy and even animation will all feature in this celebration of the Hoard and the county in which it was buried and found.” The winner of the Gate Theatre’s directing bursary in 2004, Gemma is Artistic Director of the award-winning Tin Bath Theatre Company and an Associate Director of London’s flagship fringe and new writing venue, Theatre503. Her directing credits include Eden’s Empire and Hangover Square at the Finborough Theatre and Fight Face at The Lyric Hammersmith. More recently, Gemma produced and codirected Full Stop, a show taking place in, on and around a bus stop, with her own theatre company, Light The Fuse.

She said: “What strikes me the most is how fascinated people are by the Hoard. Wherever I go I end up talking about it, and for many who don't know all the details, the facts of this incredible find are truly amazing.

an Insider’s View for our Friends New Vic Friends is an informal social group of people who like to be more involved with the life of the theatre. A regular programme means that they get to have a look at some of our backstage work, meet New Vic people, and enjoy social events.

Friends Events Dress Rehearsals Bell Book and Candle Fri 13 February Dracula Thurs 5 Mar The Ladykillers Thurs 9 April Spotlight James Atherton Composer and Musical Director for New Vic Christmas shows and Dracula Mid March Open Rehearsal Bell Book and Candle w/c 26 Jan Theatre Trip To be confirmed, see website for details 42 | www.newvictheatre.org.uk

In the coming months there’s the chance to attend dress rehearsals of New Vic productions; to meet members of the New Vic creative team and talk about their work in our regular ‘Spotlight’ night, to have an insider’s view at an open rehearsal and enjoy a theatre trip. For details of how to join the New Vic Friends contact Marketing on 01782 717539; email: kwilson@newvictheatre.org.uk

Become a New Vic Patron New Vic Patrons support our work by giving a regular donation. We are a registered charity and your support will help us to continue creating international class theatre and fund valuable work with children, young people and local communities. Every Patron donation will be matched by another £40 from Arts Council England before the end of March 2015. You can become a New Vic Patron from as little £5 per month, £60 annually; or become a New Vic Patrons’ Circle member by donating £10 per month, £120 annually. For more information visit www.newvictheatre.org.uk, pick up a leaflet at Box Office, or telephone Victoria Martin on 01782 381375.
