Why we do what we do We are unique. The New Vic was the first purpose-built theatre-in-the-round in the whole of Europe. We believe in the power of theatre to change lives. Everyone should have access to great theatre. We combine the work we do on stage with a community and education programme that is ground-breaking. As a thriving charity, we want our theatre to have an impact on the lives our audiences lead – however they engage with us. Each year, we welcome over 150,000 people through our doors to see shows on our stage, or take part in one of the many workshops and projects we run all year-round. We want the widest possible audience, from our local area and beyond, at all ages and at all stages in their lives to experience the arts and feel welcome at the New Vic and we work hard to create high quality, inspiring theatre that tells stories our audiences can connect with.

Newcastle-under-Lyme in the 1740s. A young man grows up, dovetailing and sanding and planing; learning from his father the craft of cabinet making. But Philip Astley is on the lookout for adventure. He runs away from town. Not just to join the circus - but to invent it. Astley’s competitors have to be recognised as playing their share in creating this great art form which continues to capture the world’s imagination a quarter of a millennium later. But our local hero is considered to be the father of modern circus - partly because he diversified the playbill, adding music, clowns, jugglers and other artists to the core attraction of trick riding; and partly because of the day he marked out the very first circus ring.

Look out for the Circus Past, Present and Future logo throughout this brochure to see which events are part of this special season of work.

We think of the ring now as the key symbol of the circus, thanks to Astley. Did you know that it’s a very precise size? A diameter of 42 feet is apparently the exact dimension for centrifugal force to assist a rider in staying standing on a horse’s back! Astley went on to become an international phenomenon. An impresario whose amphitheatres sprung up all over Britain and Europe; feted by kings and queens; immortalised by novelists such as Austen and Dickens. Like the Hoover, like the Mac, he became a household name: when someone said they were ‘going to Astley’s’ everyone knew they were off to watch the circus. This year, we’re taking part in the huge national celebrations of Circus 250 to commemorate Astley and his legacy. As befits Astley’s hometown, Newcastle-under-Lyme will be buzzing. Take a look through the brochure from page 6 and keep an eye out for events part of our Circus Past, Present and Future programme to find out how you can join us to celebrate Philip Astley’s extraordinary legacy and to shine a spotlight on Newcastle-underLyme’s heritage. Flying high for circus

Aerialist extraordinaire Vicki Amedume tells us all about her involvement in our Circus Past, Present and Future season, as codirector of Astley’s Astounding Adventures From an early age, Vicki Amedume was aiming high - her childhood ambition was to become a Nobel Prize-winning scientist. But her life took a slightly different path taking her to even greater heights (literally), when, in her twenties, she ran away with the circus. She’s tamed and cared for tigers, rode elephants and flown through the air on trapezes across the world. After mastering extraordinary aerial skills, she founded Upswing with the aim of expanding her career as an aerialist and choreographer while honing her directing skills. Working with the likes of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre of Scotland, she was also invited to create work for Melbourne’s Commonwealth Games. Vicki first helped the New Vic take flight in Bryony Lavery’s The Wicked Lady in 2009 and New Vic Artistic Director Theresa Heskins’ Peter Pan in 2010. Since then, she hasn’t looked back. Vicki returns to the theatre-in-the-round this summer to co-direct Frazer Flintham’s Astley’s

Astounding Adventures alongside Theresa as part of the New Vic’s Circus Past, Present and Future programme marking 250 years since the father of modern circus and homegrown hero Philip Astley drew out the first circus ring. Describing the production as one of the New Vic’s most ambitious shows to date, she says: “In the last 40 years circus has gone through a massive reinvention and has a fast growing community of artists, however, it’s still missing a public understanding of what a broad range of amazing styles, energies, skills and stories are being presented as circus. The New Vic has done a fantastic job of gathering some of the best circus talent and bringing it to Newcastle-underLyme for this celebration year.

that is hugely important for our society right now. Circus is also an artform which uses the body in dynamic action so to speak, so it is able to be understood across cultures.” Vicki concludes: “Finally, I just love circus because of its inherent playfulness, the powerful physical aspect of it which brings people together in a truly unique and all-encompassing way.” To find out more about Astley’s Astounding Adventures and Circus Past Present and Future turn to pages 8 and 22.

“I will be co-directing a new piece of theatre with Theresa which will be the most ambitious circus theatre production the New Vic has done to date. It is exciting and daunting but it will be a brilliant celebration of Philip Astley and circus showing how world-changing arts have been borne out of Newcastle.” For Vicki, circus’ recent explosion in the arts world is partly due to the accessibility of the artform in that it transcends language through physicality. “I think circus has permeated across our society, it’s present in visual arts, literature, music and in our common imagination but it has never really had a moment where we have celebrated it as an artform and recognised its contribution to society,” she says: “I don’t think anyone will ever get bored of seeing other human beings do incredible things but circus to me is not just spectacle. “When we watch other people be extraordinary or take part in circus and discover our own hidden talents, it reminds us that we all have potential beyond what is on the surface. I think

there is no place which recalls so strongly our recollections of childhood as Astley’s” Charles Dickens, Sketches by Boz

250 years ago, showman, entrepreneur and equestrian rider Philip Astley drew out a circle in the ground and filled it with astounding physical acts. It was 1768; a time of revolutions. But the real revolution Astley created was a whole new art form. His 42 foot ring and the dazzling combination of jugglers, acrobats, clowns, strong men, bareback riders… Every circus, anywhere in the world, began at this moment in 1768. 250 years later, we celebrate Philip Astley, creator of the circus, in Newcastle-underLyme, the place of his birth, with Circus Past, Present and Future - a programme of events that will showcase the wonder of circus for all ages. As part of our season, we welcome the internationally-renowned NoFit State Circus to town to create and première their show LEXICON and we’ll produce Astley’s Astounding Adventures – a brand new play about Astley’s extraordinary life, written by Stone-born Frazer Flintham and directed by our Artistic Director Theresa Heskins. Alongside these, we’ll also be leading on a host of exciting events in conjunction with The Victoria & Albert Museum, Circolombia, The Philip Astley Project, The Brampton Museum and Art Gallery, Roundhouse, London and many more. Circus Past, Present and Future will take audiences on a fantastical journey into the world of circus. Find out more about all of the events in our season across the next few pages – and join us as we run away to the circus! Circus Past, Present and Future is made possible thanks to the fantastic support of Arts Council England, and is presented by New Vic Theatre and NoFit State Circus in partnership with Arts Council England, Newcastle-under-Lyme Business Improvement District, Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, The Victoria & Albert Museum, The Brampton Museum and Art Gallery, The Philip Astley Project, Circus Works, Circus Futures, The University of Sheffield, Roundhouse, London and Upswing.

A new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel By Deborah McAndrew Directed by Conrad Nelson

The Northern Powerhouse, 1854. Imagine a world where imagination is forbidden. Coketown is such a place. Thomas Gradgrind will not permit fanciful thoughts in his school or his home. But what effect will this policy have on his own children, Tom and Louisa? How can he protect them from corrupting influences – especially when the circus comes to town? Dark satanic mills, interrupted by the colour and vibrancy of Sleary’s Circus, set the stage for a sweeping tale of supressed love, seduction and social mores, peopled with the sharply observed exaggerated characters that Dickens is celebrated for. Conrad Nelson directs Deborah McAndrew’s witty adaptation of Charles Dickens’ great Northern novel to bring you a joyful juggling and tumbling through this touching and often hilarious tale of repression and longing.

The things that they remember, the things they forget and the things they pass on, define a family’s history. For the Best family, their sturdy, handcrafted dining table holds the stories of six generations; each scratch, crack and stain telling a story about their lives, and the lives of their ancestors. Stories of love and death, of arguments and of travel across continents. Beginning life at the family’s home in Lichfield, Staffordshire, the table is a symbol of lives lived, and tells many stories. But when it comes to their family history, how much can they trust their memories? First produced at the National Theatre, this is the regional première of Tanya Ronder’s Table: a moving drama about belonging that explores how different people remain connected through centuries by the stories, and possessions, passed down by their ancestors.

Dan Jones

Peter Frankopan

3.30pm DAN JONES

3.30pm PETER FRANKOPAN

Bestselling historian, award-winning journalist and TV presenter Dan Jones shares his fascinating study of the wealthiest, most powerful – and most secretive – of the military orders that flourished in the crusading era. The Knights Templars’ story is a blistering journey through bitter conflict in the Middle East, a study of unrestrained financial power and a shocking lesson in the dangers of propaganda and political envy.

From the rise and fall of empires in China, Persia and Rome, to the spread of the great religions and the wars of the twentieth century, Peter Frankopan illuminates how The Silk Roads shaped global history and the axis of East and West. Join the historian, author and Director of the Centre for Byzantine Research at Oxford University for a fascinating discussion about his magnificent, best-selling book The Silk Roads - a New History of the World with festival trustee Tristram Hunt.

Fri 8 June 11am ANNA KEAY Monmouth - The Last Royal Rebel The tumultuous life of James, Duke of Monmouth, the illegitimate son of Charles II, is the subject of this fascinating talk from historian, broadcaster and director of The Landmark Trust, Anna Keay. Born in exile and abducted from his mother on his father’s orders, Monmouth emerged from a childhood in the backstreets of Rotterdam to command the ballrooms of Paris, the brothels of Covent Garden and the battlefields of Flanders. Anna explores his glamorous life and tragic death and will reveal the important part Cheshire and Staffordshire played in his remarkable story.

Sat 9 June 12.00pm RACHEL JOYCE International bestselling author of The Sunday Times and international bestsellers The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, Perfect and The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessey visits the Festival to share her new novel The Music Shop.

New Vic Borderlines Our award-winning Borderlines programme places the local community at the heart of its work. Engaging with individuals, groups and communities facing challenges – social and economic disadvantages, young people at risk of offending, adults with learning difficulties and others marginalised – through Borderlines we use theatre to help people find new and positive ways to understand themselves, their communities and their responsibilities. Promoting social inclusion and diversity, we undertake projects in partnership with a wide range of partners and focus on challenging destructive and anti-social behaviour, building individuals’ self-awareness and self-worth and helping to develop positive attitudes. With an aim to stimulate social change, Borderlines has been recognised as a leading national model for how theatre can be used to impact on our society, and recent documentary theatre projects we have worked on have focused on exploring challenging issues such as racism, discrimination and domestic violence.

This season look out for: WW1 Heritage Lottery Award January 2018 saw the centennial of the Minnie Pit Disaster in Halmer End in which 155 boys and men were killed. War poet Wilfred Owen when recovering from shell-shock wrote his poem Miners about the explosion. It was his first published poem. New Vic Borderlines and Minnie Pit Centenary Group have been successful in achieving funding from the WW1 Heritage Lottery Fund. The project will include; • Researching the Public Inquiry into the Minnie Pit Disaster and links between Wilfred Owen and Staffordshire • Community workshops to promote the project and share knowledge • Developing skills with local people to record oral history recordings of miners’ descendants • Writing and performing a community play Message Not Delivered Our hugely successful interactive docu-drama, based on the stories of young people whose lives have been changed forever by road traffic accidents, is off on tour for the fourth time. The innovative production is aimed at young people, exploring key areas of risk for this group.
