Collaborators I watched open-mouthed as a stage was hoisted vertically into the air. Set and performers slid off it. The stage continued to rise. A woman in high heels walked sideways across it. A group of performers held hands and chased the words racing across the screen. There and then I formed the ambition to bring to North Staffordshire the most exciting thing I’ve seen since Peter Brook’s three-day epic Mahabharata. This summer we’ll achieve exactly that, when the Appetite Consortium, which the New Vic leads, welcomes As the World Tipped to Staffordshire.

wo summers ago I rushed away from the Vic late one Friday night, with a picnic thrown into the back of our rickety Land Rover, hoping to make it up to Manchester before dark to catch an outdoor performance of Wired Aerial Theatre’s As the World Tipped. It was a fine evening. As I sat on my picnic blanket clutching a plastic glass of warm fizz

Since she last worked with us on The Glass Menagerie, Sarah Punshon, who will be directing Gaslight, has been on an adventure. As the curator of a pilot programme at the Natural History Museum, she’s been researching, commissioning and creating live performance events designed to engage families in natural history and museum science. I wish I’d been able to catch some of the projects that she created with the
Wired Aerial Theatre performing As the World Tipped
Creatives museums’ collection at her disposal, as I find it fascinating that what we know from making and sharing theatre can be applied in such an unusual way.
Already this year we’ve had such a good time collaborating with James Atherton on Around the World in 80 Days that we feel very spoiled to have him back with us for The Hundred and One Dalmatians. James will be creating a jazzy score to be played live by our talented actor musicians. Last year I enjoyed watching a five year old leaning over a rail to get as close as possible to the musicians, who clearly fascinated him; and we know that the live music in these productions holds great appeal to adults too – even those who don’t have the excuse of children or grandchildren to bring along.

T
o say Hannah Edwards has had an interesting morning would be an understatement.
She’s just been cast to play Perdita, the heroic mother of a host of Dalmatian puppies, in the New Vic’s production of The Hundred and One Dalmatians and is in North Staffordshire getting some expert tips from a rather spotty four-legged friend named Dixie.
There’s a photographer on hand to capture proceedings, there are smiles all round and dog treats stashed in pockets. It was bound to be a fun, if somewhat slightly chaotic, photoshoot. Now, Hannah, who has just finished filming for hit BBC drama Call the Midwife, is sitting in the New Vic restaurant having a brew and a breather. “I’ll be mother, I’ll pour,” she giggles, organising cups and saucers and taking control of a pot of tea for two. It’s an apt scene given Hannah’s first appearance at the New Vic was playing Alice in Theresa Heskins’ awardnominated adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. “This is a bit like the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party with me pouring, isn’t it?” she laughs: “Except this time I might get to drink some of the tea!” Fresh-faced and beaming, the 25-year-old Liverpool lass who now lives in London, couldn’t be happier to be back at the New Vic, even if it means rolling in the grass with a rather excitable Dalmatian.
“The New Vic is such a warm building to walk into, I’ve been really looking forward to coming and saying hello to everyone,” she says: “The photoshoot was such fun; with animals you never know what they’re going to do. I love dogs, I’ve got a Shih Tzu at home called Oscar and he’s loopy — but I love him to pieces. “I’ve always had a dog - I’m an only child so animals were important to me, I spent most of my childhood playing with my animals.” Although there won’t be any real dogs to contend with on stage in The Hundred and One Dalmatians, Hannah says that she will be observing Oscar carefully in the coming months to “learn from a professional”. “I will definitely be asking Oscar for notes about how to be more canine-like,” she says: “I‘m really excited for this show because I’ve got no idea where it’s going to go yet. There is so much to discover, it will all come out in rehearsals. “I recently acquired the book as at the moment I only know the Disney films but I am familiar with the work of Dodie Smith; her novel I Capture the Castle is one of my all time favourites. “As a child, everyone knew of Cruella de Vil. When I was a kid I had a white fake fur coat and - this is ridiculous - I used to wear it for school and we used to play at being Cruella de Vil,” she says rather shamefacedly: “We used to sing while we paraded around the playground wearing this coat and I look back and cringe!” Although she might cringe with embarrassment at such early playground performances it seems

Alice in Wonderland in 2011 was in fact Hannah’s first job after graduating from Bristol Old Vic. She is the first to admit it was quite daunting.

“I was really nervous but I couldn’t have wished for a better first job as I touched so many bases and learnt so many skills,” she says, touchingly adding: “I owe a lot to that job, the actor I am today and the actor I will become because naturally it has shaped me. “I’m very proud of that show and I love it to bits.” Returning to the New Vic for last year’s adaptation of A Christmas Carol, she delighted young audiences playing the cheery Ghost of Christmas Past and Martha Cratchit.
Hannah was always destined to perform. “My mum was a dancer and an actor and she teaches dance; as a baby I used to sit in her classes,” she explains.
Following this, she went straight on another learning curve, playing Juliet in the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmund’s production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
“I always wanted to join in, I would be there with my nappy on, wearing a leotard, trying to copy all her students,” she laughs, adding: “I think it’s fair to say that you probably couldn’t have stopped me wanting to perform, it’s always been part of my life.”
And she’s just finished filming for the new series of the BBC’s Call the Midwife, the award-winning drama set in London’s East End during the 1950s and based on the memoirs of midwife Jennifer Worth.
Beginning dance lessons when she was four, she later earned a scholarship to attend the Sylvia Young Theatre School aged 11. “I’d always done a bit of everything but I’d always known I wanted to act so, after Sylvia Young, I went to Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and that was that,” she says. 8 | www.newvictheatre.org.uk
“I’ve been reading the book and it’s quite fascinating,” says Hannah, whose episode should air in the New Year. “I couldn’t believe it when I got the job. I got the breakdown and it was for a 23-year-old girl and I was like what, ‘gosh, this is the oldest character I’ve ever played!’”

Now set to spend her third Christmas at the New Vic, Hannah is becoming somewhat of a regular and laughs when asked how it feels to have played a young girl, a friendly spirit and now a mother Dalmatian.
“What does that say about me?” she jokes: “Seriously though, it’s great. It’s very varied, it’s new territory and a new challenge.” The Hundred and One Dalmatians will also reunite Hannah with fellow A Christmas Carol cast member Oliver Mawdsley who will be playing Pongo in the adaptation by New Vic Artistic Director,Theresa Heskins. “I’ve actually known Ollie since I was four-years-old - he’s like my brother, we argue like real siblings,” she reveals: “We went to the same dance school and did shows together and I think we did our first pantomime together.” So playing Dalmatians aside, what’s next for Hannah?
“I have a checklist of places I want to perform at and plays I want to tick off but I’m realising that opportunities come up and you don’t know what they’re going to be or where they’ll take you,” she explains: “I just want to work and carry on enjoying acting. If my career carries on being varied, with me playing dogs, children and pregnant ladies, then that’s fantastic.” Pouring the last of the tea, Hannah excitedly says she can’t wait to see the results of the morning’s photoshoot. Again emphasising her delight at being back at the New Vic, she looks around the restaurant and smiles – when she talks of her fondness of the New Vic, it’s clearly not just words “To have been given the opportunity to come back twice is such a treat because it’s a chance to learn more,” she says thoughtfully: “I’m touched and honoured to be back – it’s like being at home.” The Hundred and One Dalmatians runs from 23 Nov - 1 Feb.

Making Shakespeare child’s play We lift the lid on the new partnership between the New Vic and the Royal Shakespeare Company which will see Staffordshire’s schoolchildren shout about Shakespeare…
M
acbeth,The Tempest, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hamlet, and of course, Romeo and Juliet – whichever William Shakespeare play it was, most of us studied the work of the nation’s most performed playwright at school sat behind a desk, in front of a blackboard, tatty play script in hand.
Already, Newcastle school Springhead Primary School has been announced as the project’s ‘hub school’. As a ‘hub school’ Springhead will work with the New Vic, the RSC and up to seven other local schools, known as ‘cluster schools’, to get to grips with skills needed to teach Shakespeare in a more active way, using techniques similar to those used in the RSC rehearsal rooms.
But now, thanks to a new partnership between the New Vic and the Royal Shakespeare Company, hundreds of Staffordshire’s schoolchildren will be getting closer to Shakespeare’s work than ever.
New Vic Artistic Director,Theresa Heskins said: “We’re looking forward to an inspiring three years collaborating with the RSC on this programme, which will enable both organisations to work closely with local teachers, young people, and each other.”

Early next year, the project will see the RSC visit the area with an as yet top secret (to be revealed soon!) Shakespeare production. Specifically created to engage young people, the production will give pupils the chance to work with actors to get to the nitty gritty of the play. Later, in 2016, schoolchildren will work with artists from the RSC and New Vic Education to bring a Shakespeare performance festival centre-stage at the New Vic. Brian Anderson, head teacher at Springhead Primary School, said he was “very excited” at the prospect of working with the New Vic and the RSC.

“We have had a long tradition at Springhead of using expert practitioners to enhance the learning experience for the children and we are looking forward to continuing this while developing networks with local primary and secondary schools,” he said, adding: “Through this long term project, we aim to raise the self-esteem of our children and enable them to develop lifelong skills. “The study of Shakespeare’s plays will promote the children’s love of stories and
theatre and their use of rich language.” The project will also give three teachers from Springhead Primary School the opportunity to take a special postgraduate course with the RSC and the University of Warwick, helping them develop expertise in the teaching of Shakespeare and enabling them to support fellow teachers in other schools. Welcoming Springhead Primary School on board, Jacqui O’Hanlon said: “As an LPN Hub School, Springhead Primary will be delivering an innovative programme of work with its own staff and pupils and leading a cluster of other local schools. “We were impressed by the vision and commitment of both senior leadership and teachers in the school to ensure quality learning experiences for their pupils. We look forward to developing a long-term and meaningful partnership with the school and the New Vic Theatre to ensure that young people’s encounters with Shakespeare are exciting and relevant.” Further details about the New Vic’s involvement with the LPN will be announced on the New Vic’s website, www.newvictheatre.org.uk, in the coming months. Uncle Eric in Downtown Abbey The ultimate 60s musical ! New Vic favourites uncle Eric, Madge and the gang are back for their latest musical escapades. It’s an upstairs-downstairs adventure filled with comedy, nostalgia and the greatest hits of the 1960s. Not forgetting the posh frocks! Eric’s out of a job and flat broke – just for a change. But Madge saves the day when she finds them work as the valet and cook at Downtown Abbey, a run-down stately home in deepest Staffordshire. Currently in its first year, the Appetite programme was launched by a consortium of five local organisations led by the New Vic Theatre with B Arts, Brighter Futures, PiCL and Staffordshire University’s Creative Communities Unit in response to statistics which found that the area has some of the lowest levels of arts engagement in the country. With a vision to develop a ‘Taster Menu’ of different types of family friendly arts in public spaces across the city, Appetite will also be encouraging communities to take an active role in producing events for themselves during the next three years. Closer to home, New Vic Education and New Vic Borderlines are serving up a programme of Appetite events of their own.

Jelly and Ice Cream will see the New Vic’s Education team collaborate with the Library Service and Children’s Centres to share a love of storytelling with local families. Between November and December, professional storytellers will be encouraging families to explore the world of stories and create tales of their own in a series of sessions to be held across the city. Appetite Creative Producer, Gemma Thomas, said: “Jelly and Ice Cream is about inspiring families across the city to read and imagine together to forge a link between the performing arts and storytelling. “We want to enable families to access places in the city which already provide access to the arts within libraries and the theatre.”

Keele University with New Vic Borderlines – Bridging the Gap In partnership with Keele University, School of Management, Borderlines explores the connection between communities in Japan who have been affected by a disaster and crisis such as the Tsunami and communities in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire who have been affected by economical and social disasters in slow motion. Do communities react in the same way, do they support each other in the same way? Introducing Brendan Davies, who will be working with Borderlines on this part of the project, Gemma said: “Brendan is one of a number of people who will be working to make connections with the city to encourage more people to get involved with and enjoy the arts.” Brendan said: “I will be going out and meeting community members to establish relationships with Appetite and will be acting as the link between the community hubs and the arts. “It is an exciting time, we’re meeting lots of different people and getting to know what people in Stoke-on-Trent think and feel about the arts in the area.

A series of community workshops will culminate in events open to the general public. Bianco by NoFit State Circus on 26, 27 and 28 July From their base in Cardiff, the spectacular No Fit State tour the world. In July they will be bringing their breathtaking and memorable displays of daring aerial extremes and explosive performances to Stoke-on-Trent for the first time. The Pavement Cafe on 3, 10, 17 and 24 August The Pavement Café will come to life in Stoke-on-Trent city centre as part of regional, national and international outdoor events taking place throughout August. Featuring Tangled Feet, Slunglow C-12 Dance Theatre and others, the events will also welcome local organisations such as the British Ceramics Biennial.

When the lights went up on the New Vic’s opening performance in 1986, it marked the culmination of 25 years work, not just by Vic Theatre Director Peter Cheeseman but by the people of Staffordshire.
The dream of building Europe’s first purpose-built theatre-in-the-round became a reality following a tremendous fundraising effort by hundreds of businesses and local people who contributed more than £1.5 million to the building fund. Quite simply, the New Vic would not exist without the support of the community. And in 2008 supporters came out in force once more, when more than £1 million was raised for WorkSpace, a new state-of -the-art community facility. Now, there is a way people can continue to support the New Vic: the New Vic Patrons scheme. New Vic Fundraising Officer, Victoria Martin, said: “The New Vic has always been held in great affection by local people and 44| www.newvictheatre.org.uk
we have been fortunate always to receive their strong support.” New Vic Patrons support our theatre-inthe-round, helping to create a vibrant and diverse programme which is seen by more than 100,000 people every year. The Patrons also support the theatre’s lifechanging work in the community, helping to deliver award-winning pioneering work to more than 10,000 young people and community members each year through the New Vic’s Borderlines and Education departments. Theresa Heskins, Artistic Director, said: “The New Vic Theatre’s mission is to make excellent theatre-in-the-round and be a positive force for change in our region.
