The New Vic on the national stage We’re passionate about the work we do, creating high-quality, inspiring theatre that tells stories audiences from our local area and beyond can connect with. We’re delighted that in our 60th anniversary year, two New Vic shows made here at our home in Newcastle-under-Lyme entertained audiences on the national stage. Tom, Dick & Harry, our Co-Production with Kenny Wax Productions, took to the stage of Alexandra Palace in London in July, astounding audiences with the true tale of the escape from Stalag Luft III in World War II.

We’ve had an incredible 60 years of theatre making in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stoke-onTrent and Staffordshire and the whole team here is very much looking forward to what’s next. As we look to the future, it’s important to us that we continue to push the boundaries of theatre making. I’m excited to be working with Headlong and the Barbican in 2023 on an

TECHNICALLY ACHIEVING THE IMPOSSIBLE ON STAGE FOR 60 YEARS! The New Vic’s technical teams have been pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and keeping shows running smoothly for 60 years of theatre making in-the-round.

The way that we inventively use the whole space and not just the stage but the sub-stage, flying system and the big void that is the air in the middle of the room still surprises me.”

Encompassing Stage Management, Lighting and Sound, our technical teams have a practical and creative responsibility to fulfil the ambition of the director and make their vision for the show a reality.

Once rehearsals begin for a show the Deputy Stage Manager (DSM) will start preparing their ‘prompt copy’ of the script. This will not only have the entire script in but also things like props lists, notes from any design meetings, and blocking [where the actors are standing or where bits of set are on stage]. The Company Stage Manager (CSM) and Assistant Stage Manager (ASM) will start sourcing props, some of which will be stand-ins to get rehearsals up and running, and some of which will be the final thing, as well as reacting to any rehearsal notes sent from the DSM in the rehearsal room.

Once there’s a script for a show, they hit the ground running. Like all departments at the New Vic, they are based in-house and it’s a constant collaborative effort – from the initial design meeting to the final dress rehearsal – to ensure everything comes together and on budget. Sound and Lighting Technician and Sound Designer for a number of New Vic shows Alex Day said: “It is vital to be able to communicate effectively with the director and to both agree artistically on the tone of the project and what expectations they have for the production.” Chief Electrician and Resident Lighting Designer Daniella Beattie said: “Because we’re an unusual space, it makes you try much harder to prove you can do stuff. It does make your head scratch. I never go into a show thinking, this will be easy.” Company Stage Manager Steve Hall added: “I didn’t think we’d ever use the auditorium to suspend actors and do circus acrobatics.

on QLab [a piece of software used for designing and playing back show cues], and Daniella will draw up a plan in a Computer Aided Design (CAD) package with the intricate details of every light. Daniella said: “When I started in 1995, it was in the days of what we called the generic light, which was basically a lightbulb or car headlight in a tin can which was either on or off and that was it. “Over the years the amount of technology that has come into it is extraordinary, now we have infinite control of the lights and their timings and how they change. Projection is a big thing that’s come in. If you wanted to create the subtle movement of a tree, that tiny move can be created in a way that the audience shouldn’t even notice it, but it’s helping with the storytelling. “Light does behave in a certain fashion and it’s about trying to manipulate that and to make it work the hardest for you within the space and the time that you’ve got. In that respect it’s like painting. You put the paint on the page and you kind of know what you want it to do, but how it turns out can be quite different from where you started off with your idea in your head.” Once rehearsals are complete, the technical team will ‘fit up’ the auditorium, rigging any technical equipment required. By the technical rehearsal period, which lasts one or two weeks, everything will be ready to go, and the departments will work through the show methodically from start to finish to make sure everything works. The DSM will run the show through tech rehearsals and once it opens, calling everything that happens in the show from lighting changes to sound effects. The ASMs will be ‘on the floor’ in contact with the actors and running scene and

Master_Spring_2023master.indd 5

costume changes. Steve said: “Peter Pan was the first show I called as a DSM and you name it, it was pretty much in that show. The pure delight and fear I had on the first night calling that show was terrifying but also absolutely thrilling and at the end I was so proud to see everybody applaud.” No matter what, our technical teams find inventive solutions to a wide range of challenges and consistently amaze audiences. Alex said: “When we staged Coppelia - a Mystery in 2021 we were still working within COVID-19 guidelines which restricted how we were able to operate the show, and also the logistical problems of how the show was staged presented some complications because the show started outside, then the audience went into the auditorium before exiting outside once again. To overcome this, I designed a system where all the sound and lighting cues, inside and out, could be operated from the control box by one person. “We can achieve things now that would have been completely impossible less than 10 years ago.” And we can’t wait to see what our team pull off over the next 60 years! @NewVicTheatre NewVicTheatreStaffordshire new_vic_theatre

One of the New Vic’s best loved Christmas shows is back this festive season. Come and join us as we take a trip to Wonderland! Journey with Alice as she follows the White Rabbit into a curiously enchanting new world, filled with even curioser characters. As she searches for a way home, Alice encounters strange and whimsical people: a disappearing cat with a grin wider than she’s ever seen, a Mad Hatter whose tea party never quite serves tea, and a bad tempered Queen who is looking for her jam tarts… An adventure like no other, Alice In Wonderland is filled with fun, laughter, live music and lots of magical moments. Brought to life in the New Vic’s sensational trademark style from the same team who brought you our much-loved productions of The Snow Queen, Treasure Island and last year’s Beauty and The Beast, this is a story that will give the young – and young at heart – a joyful festive treat this year!

Eric’s Christmas Turkey A fun-packed festive celebration filled with sensational ’60s music!

Mon 28 November - Sat 10 December Tickets from £22.00 See page 7 for details

When Eric sees his local Amateur Dramatic Society are looking for men to take part in their Christmas production, he realises they must have an excess of women. As ‘an excess of women’ is Eric’s idea of heaven he signs up. However, double-bookings of the rehearsal space, an overenthusiastic Producer who is also the Director, Writer and Star of the Show (who would do a thing like that??) and the arrival of Bev to spoil his fun are all just the start of a disastrous production. Add to this 85-year old Miss Baskeyfield playing the juvenile female lead, four members of a pop group who don’t even want to be there and a sound man who appears to be doing his own show and things quickly go from bad to worse. But will Eric save the day and get a festive 5 star review or will he be the reason the local papers rate the play a ‘turkey’? Whatever happens, the show must go on…! A fun-packed festive treat, Eric’s Christmas Turkey is filled with sensational ’60s songs, lots of laughs, dancing, and Christmas sparkle – it’s a perfect way to start your Christmas celebrations!

A story of the search for truth, justice and hope through three generations of women. What does it mean to have roots, to feel the connection of the land, mountains, rivers, trees; where deep song, music and poetry beats as your heart and the blood in your veins flows like a timeless river through a land for centuries? And then, hate spills into the soil, the trees, the rivers. What new songs can be sung and verses made? Before reconciliation comes acknowledgment, before hope, truth. ‘And the questioned gave then a prompt reply; Bosnia - forgive me - there is a land, Both barren And barefoot - forgive me – Both cold and hungry – but more than that - Forgive me – Defiant - through A dream’ Mak Dizdar

Bouncers Written and directed by John Godber

Tue 28 March - Sat 1 April Tickets from £20.00 See page 7 for details

Its Friday night, the weekend’s here and the party’s about to begin. Time for dancing, drinking and the search for true love. The club’s getting hot but out in the cold the Bouncers are ready for anything. Meet Ralph, Judd, Les and Lucky Eric as they relive a night in a Yorkshire disco in the 80s in an outrageous celebration of the northern nightclub scene. It’s a screamingly funny ride through one of those nights as all the gang are out on the town – the boys, the girls, the cheesy DJ, the fish and chip van and the taxi home. All under the watchful eyes of the Bouncers… Voted as one of the greatest plays of the 20th Century in a National Theatre poll, and regularly produced around the world, Bouncers was nominated for Comedy of the Year in 1985, won seven Los Angeles Critics’ Circle Awards and five awards in Chicago in 1987. Abigail’s Party By Mike Leigh Directed by Michael Cabot

Age Guidance: 14+ Contains strong language.

It was 1977, the year of skin-tight polyester, the Queen’s Silver Jubilee and Saturday Night Fever. Fever. The Sex Pistols were storming up the charts, skateboarding was the latest craze and Angela Rippon danced with Morecambe & Wise. And at Hampstead Theatre in London, Mike Leigh and a cast including Alison Steadman, premiered Abigail’s Party - a ferocious black comedy and a true landmark of twentieth century theatre. In her suburban living room, Beverly prepares for the arrival of her guests. She and husband Laurence will play host to neighbours Angela, Tony and Sue. As the alcohol flows and the ‘nibbles’ are handed around, Mike Leigh’s ruthless, achingly funny examination of 1970s British life begins…

A much-loved character on Applehurst Applehurst,, the BBC soap opera, Sister George is a cheerful nurse who cycles around the countryside singing hymns and doing good. In reality June Buckeridge, the actress who plays her, is a swaggering, foul mouthed loose cannon who has very little in common with her radio persona. Due to low ratings, cut backs and June’s own bad behaviour, the BBC decides “Sister “Sister George” George” has to go…for good! The Killing of Sister George is an iconic black comedy shot through with surprising moments of tenderness. Famously adapted into a film in 1968 with Beryl Reid in the title role, the New Vic and Told by an Idiot will bring to life this bittersweet play with a unique visual flair and an audacious blend of raucous humour and compelling drama. “What a card! He’s a rare ‘un, make no mistake” From a young age, loveable rogue Denry Machin has his eyes set on great things and when life gives him an opportunity, he takes it. A washerwoman’s son, his humble beginnings won’t hold him back from achieving a life he loves to live. Helped along by a little bit of luck, a lot of initiative and just a touch of chutzpah, he’s soon enjoying fame and fortune, becoming the most celebrated ‘card’ in The Five Towns! A revival of Claybody Theatre’s original production seen at Fenton Town Hall in 2022, this joyous stage adaptation of Arnold Bennett’s classic comic novel is set in a fictionalised Stoke-on-Trent known as The Five Towns. Bennett felt that, from a literary point of view, Five Towns sounded better than six. ‘Stokies’ will tell you otherwise! Directed by Conrad Nelson (Anna (Anna of the Five Towns, Towns, Brassed Off) Off ) The Card is filled with music, mayhem and lots of laughter for a production that’s identified with “the great cause of cheering us all up!”

A Play for The Living in a Time of Extinction By Miranda Rose Hall

This darkly funny, life-affirming show is a bold experiment in eco theatre-making. “The difference between death and extinction is this: death is to cease to exist. Extinction is to extinguish. I think of death as individual. Extinction is collective.” Naomi is part of a theatre company who have made a play especially for you, those living through extinction, but the actors haven’t shown up yet. In the meantime, Naomi has a plan. This innovative one woman show takes audiences on a life-changing journey to confront the urgent ecological disaster that is unfolding around us. Part ritual, part battle cry, and powered entirely by bicycles, this fiercely feminist off-grid production is a moving exploration of what it means to be human in an era of man-made extinction. Sharing learning from Europe, the Barbican’s Katie Mitchell and Headlong partner with the New Vic and theatres across the country to present an innovative touring model, the first of its kind in the UK, which sees a blueprint of the show uniquely brought to life by local teams in a daring zero-travel tour. It forms part of a ground-breaking international experiment in reimagining theatre in a climate crisis.

Accessible performances The New Vic welcomes all customers and is committed to providing access to the arts for all. These services currently include: Captioning Captioning is like subtitles for films: as the actors speak, their words are shown on a screen so that you can follow what is said, when it is said and by whom. Audio Described Audio description is a verbal commentary that explains what is happening on the stage during the parts of the performance where there is no dialogue.

Free parking available close to the theatre entrance for Blue Badge holders (reserve a space with our Box Office). Automatic doors and level access into the foyer, ramped access to the auditorium on the ground floor and lift access to the first floor. Wheelchair spaces available on both the ground and first floor. Accessible toilets available on both levels of the theatre. Our gender neutral toilet is situated on the ground level of the theatre. Infra-red assisted hearing system and Induction Loop (not available for amplified performances). Baby-changing facilities available. You are welcome to breastfeed in any of our Front-of-House areas. If you would like a private space, please speak to our Box Office Team.

Master_Spring_2023master.indd 42

Relaxed performances Relaxed performances are designed to welcome audience members who might be anxious about attending the theatre, including those with autistic spectrum conditions as well as those with a sensory and communication disorder or learning disability. Sign-Language Interpreted performances Sign language performances convey the script of the show using hand gestures and movements, body language and facial expressions, instead of spoken words.

Assistance Dogs are welcome, and water will be provided. If you wish to take your dog into the auditorium, please let Box Office know when booking. Wearing the Sunflower lanyard discreetly indicates to people around the wearer that they may need additional support, help or a little more time. Please feel free to borrow one from our Box Office Team. Our balcony seating is approximately 30ft above the main stage and only accessible by stairs. As such, this area is not recommended for very young children, or those with mobility concerns. Speak to a member of our Box Office Team for advice on the best seats for you. Accessible performances are highlighted on individual show pages and on the diary on pages 44 - 45. For more information on any of the above facilities contact our Theatre Manager, David Sunnuck at dsunnuck@newvictheatre.org.uk

Blue Badge holders can arrange to reserve a space in our car park, free of charge. Spaces are limited and pre-booking is essential. Please call our Box Office Team on 01782 717962 to reserve your space. Reserved free parking for coaches can also be arranged – call the Box Office for details. By Public Transport

Parking Onsite parking is available at the theatre (a charge of £1.50 applies from 6.00pm). On busy performances where our car park is full, alternative parking is available on King Street Car Park, approx. a five minute walk from the theatre; charges apply. As we are located in a residential area, we kindly ask customers to park in the recommended car parks and not on adjacent KIDSGROVE J16

streets to minimise inconvenience to our neighbours.
