Twenty years ago, our Borderlines department was created. The name came from our desire to make a difference to the people and communities who exist on the borders of our society. Groups and individuals who, for one reason or another, seem to be at risk of being marginalised, isolated or excluded. We wanted to make a difference to these people and communities, and to our wider society, by looking at positive changes we could support and make, using the power of the imagination and of theatre. It’s been an extraordinary two decades, and Borderlines has made a huge difference to so many lives. Some of my personal highlights have included: seeing our Strathcross group of adults who have learning disabilities delivering a joyous piece of theatre about a donkey; being in a studio with a lively audience of families speaking dozens of languages to each other – they’d come to support sons and daughters who’d made a version of The Arabian Nights as part of their English as a Second Language course; watching a council’s Chief Executive gamely hamming it up as the villain in a Christmas panto made by the authority’s looked-after children, of whom he was their legal guardian; watching Refuge work alongside All Our Daughters, which resulted in a number of Forced Marriage Protection Orders, one on behalf of an eight year old child; working with colleagues in the constabulary, judiciary, Home Office, Foreign Office, fire service and health service; watching a young adult who’d been arrested for a racially motivated crime flourishing under Borderlines’ care and becoming a young volunteer working to help local refugees and asylum seekers.

This year we celebrate Borderlines’ twentieth birthday. An exhibition looking back over the people, communities, partners and projects will mark it, and a new piece of theatre will be created and shared to mark it. Theresa Heskins Artistic Director @TheresaHeskins

20 Years of Impact Celebrating New Vic Borderlines 2019 is a very special year for New Vic Borderlines – our community outreach programme marks 20 years of changing lives locally, nationally and internationally. Set up in 1999 with investment from Arts Council England’s Arts for Everyone programme, Borderlines was originally only intended to be a three-year project working with young people pushed to the edge of their communities. Since then, the programme has evolved to work with people from a wide range of backgrounds, giving some of the most vulnerable members of society not only a support network but also a voice. Becoming a leading force for change, Borderlines uses theatre within the community to challenge issues from racism and discrimination, to domestic violence and antisocial behaviour and regularly partners with frontline professionals in the health, police, fire and justice services as well as local authorities, groups and charities.
All Our Daughters
Already this year, Borderlines relaunched their 2015 production Love Hurts?, their drama that explores abusive relationships among young people, and toured it to schools and colleges, before remounting the poignant Yizkor, a powerful documentary-drama inspired by Holocaust survivors, at the newly opened Huddersfield Holocaust Exhibition and Learning Centre. All Our Daughters? was another groundbreaking project, developed by Borderlines, that used drama to highlight issues surrounding forced marriage and ‘honour’ violence. Supported by the Home Office and Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Forced Marriage Unit, All Our Daughters? first launched in 2010 when Nazir Afzal, then Director at the Crown Prosecution Service, described it as being “Without doubt an enormously worthwhile project that I am sure will significantly contribute to saving lives.” And it did. Following an initial tour of Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent schools and colleges, 12 Forced Marriage Protection Orders were taken out on behalf of young people, the youngest for a girl of just nine. In 2013, the production went back on the road, this time nationally after relaunching at the Houses of Parliament. A Part Of Me followed in 2014, using testimonies of real women to give a voice to those who have experienced female genital mutilation with the aim of increasing awareness among education and health professionals.

Andrew Lloyd Webber Musical Theatre Project
Highlighting the dangers of distraction driving, Message Not Delivered launched in 2016 with the support of Staffordshire Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Ellis, the Proceeds of Crime Fund and Staffordshire Police. The hard-hitting interactive drama has now toured three times, most recently in partnership with West Midlands Fire Service. Building on existing relations between the New Vic and Keele University, in 2015 Borderlines and the university’s Management School founded CASIC (Community Animation and Social Innovation Centre), a major international research centre. Focusing on topics such as volunteering, aging, violence, exclusion and communities in crisis, CASIC has since worked within multiple settings in the UK, as well as internationally in Japan, Sweden, Greece and Poland. Closer to home, regular Borderlines groups continue weekly, including Strathcross, a group of adults with learning disabilities, alongside one-off projects such as Lost and Found at Maxims, a year-long heritage project in partnership with Belong Village which

explored memories of the iconic Newcastle nightclub, Maxims; Hungry 4 Change, which challenged the misconceptions that exist about food banks; and A Sigh Of The Coal which marked the centenary of the North Staffordshire Minnie Pit Disaster. As this brochure goes to print, one of the next projects is with young people from Stoke-on-Trent who are working with Borderlines to rehearse a brand new musical supported by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation. The musical is being developed by the participants themselves, and will put their stories centre-stage at the New Vic in July. The list of projects is endless and the enthusiasm and dedication behind them limitless. Now Borderlines’ work with young people from disadvantaged communities is supported by the Denise Coates Foundation ensuring an even greater impact for local young people. During the last 20 years, Borderlines has helped tens of thousands of people in hundreds of different projects, tackling urgent social problems head on and building better futures for individuals and for their communities. Find out more about our current projects on page 30. Here’s to the next 20 years!

Thirsty for change, Millie dreams of a better life – one with her own home and fresh water from her own taps. When her husband tells of his new job, her fortunes look set to change. Up against resentment from her teenage children, responsible for her aging father and with another baby on the way, will her dreams ever become a reality? This moving drama, set to a backdrop of evocative Irish music, captures the camaraderie of living in a close-knit community, where love, laughter and hope blossom against the harshest of circumstances. Award-winning playwright and singer-songwriter Lizzie Nunnery has enjoyed great critical acclaim for her work, including being shortlisted for the Meyer-Whitworth award for Intemperance. She has a keen understanding of how her characters speak to the world we live in now, increasingly weaving music into her work - her play with songs Narvik won Best New Play in the UK Theatre Awards 2017. She has written extensively for BBC radio; she is currently developing her first feature film; and her plays have been produced across the country at theatres including Liverpool Everyman, Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, and the National Theatre.

It’s Josie’s birthday and she’s not happy about it. Being a stay at home dominatrix is hard enough but if you’re middle aged you just get tired. But Lionel, her most loyal customer, is determined to cheer her up. With the help of Josie’s ice skating obsessed daughter Brenda Marie and their OCD, devout Irish Catholic cleaner, Martha, he is throwing a party. There’s even a special guest coming – the King himself. Elvis that is, in the form of brand new Elvis impersonator Timothy Wong. He might not know the songs but his outfits are spectacular. Nobody is expecting the other surprise guest though, and she’s about to make sure the party gets all shook up. It’s time to grab a drink, swivel those hips and snarl those lips as the night really gets going. Hilarious and heartfelt - this is a quirky comedy sure to warm your heart and thaw the cold. Martha, Josie and the Chinese Elvis is about learning to accept who you are and making the most of your moves. Whatever you’re dressed in.

A heart-warming story about community spirit and triumph in the face of adversity, Brassed Off is by turns funny and poignant and features rousing live music played by TCTC Group Champion Brass Band. 1994. Yorkshire, England. Returning to her hometown up north, Gloria discovers a community in crisis. The local Pit is on the brink of closure, money is scarce and morale is at an all-time low. Only the Colliery Brass Band is keeping spirits up, sights set firmly on reaching the national brass band championships at the Royal Albert Hall, but as conversations turn to talk of picket lines and redundancy packages, the miners are falling out of tune‌ Flugelhorn-playing Gloria brings hope to the band and the town. But is she all she seems? And how will the miners react when they find out who she works for? The award-winning smash-hit film captured the hearts of a nation when it was released in 1996 and this new version of the BAFTA-nominated story is sure to captivate you this season.

“Tonight’s the night of the Devil’s Ceilidh So you see. You have to stay. And you have to sing.” A delicious play filled with wit, spellbinding music and devilish encounters, The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart is a journey of self-discovery that will enchant your imaginations and take you into a magical world where anything is possible, but nothing is as it seems. In the depths of midwinter, in the snowy Scottish Borders, cautious academic Prudencia Hart finds herself trapped inside her own personal hell - at a pub lock-in, where drink is flowing freely, revellers are revelling and all around her people are singing their own Border Ballads. As attentions turn to Prudencia, she escapes from the lock-in, seeking to take refuge at the local B&B. The snow is falling thickly but when she encounters a friendly stranger who offers to help, it looks like she’ll find her way back to the warm. What she’s not expecting is to find herself at the edge of reality… The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart won a Herald Angel award at the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a Critics’ Award for Theatre in Scotland 2010-2011 and a 2017 Drama Desk award.

Blackadder meets Carry On as we travel 400 years back in time to meet Uncle Eric’s ancestor, Edric the Smith. Surprisingly, he’s a lazy, unemployed, good-for-nothing who relies for money on his wife, Mistress Merrily, landlady of the Talke Inn. Could this man really be Eric’s ancestor?? When William Shakespeare arrives at the inn their world is turned upside down and a host of questions have to be answered. What is Edric’s codpiece really hiding? What does She Loves You sound like when played on a lute? And did Edric really write The Bard’s best lines? Yes, it’s Eric and the gang with a brand new Shakespearean comedy! It might be set in Tudor times but, once again, it’s a fabulous night of comedy and the greatest hits of the 1960s!

FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS Thursday 6th June 12.30pm Mary Portas By most people’s standards, Mary Portas has had a pretty good career. She’s reached the top of the ‘ladder’ and been lucky enough to have had a good life. But at what cost? Mary rebuilt her own business on the values that matter: collaboration, empathy, instinct and trust. Values not always associated with leadership or winning, but which made her and her team feel good. And it worked. Now in Work Like a Woman Mary calls for radical Mary Portas re-evaluation of how we all work and challenges us all – women and men – to make the way we work better, where ever that is and whatever we are doing. 2.00pm A N Wilson: Victoria – A life To many, Queen Victoria is a ruler shrouded in myth and mystique - an aging, stiff widow, paraded as the figurehead to an all-male imperial enterprise. But in truth, Britain’s longest reigning monarch was one of the most passionate, expressive, humorous and unconventional women who ever lived. Acclaimed Staffordshire-raised biographer, novelist and columnist A. N. Wilson makes a return visit to the Festival to reveal Victoria as a brave, original woman at the very epicentre of Britain’s changing place in the world.

8.00pm Viv Groskop – How to Own the Room From the way Michelle Obama projects ‘happy Viv Groskop high status’, and the power of J.K.Rowling’s understated speaking style, to Virginia Woolf’s leisurely pacing and Oprah Winfrey’s mastery of inner conviction; what is it that our heroines do to make us sit up and listen – really listen – to their every word? And how can you achieve that impact in your own life? Join writer, stand-up comedian and TV and radio presenter Viv Groskop for more from her best-selling guide to public speaking for women.
Fri 7 June 12.30pm Andrew Roberts – Churchill: Walking with Destiny We think of Churchill as a Andrew Roberts hero who saved civilization from the evils of Nazism and warned of the grave crimes of Soviet communism, but Andrew Roberts’ masterwork, based on extensive new material and unpublished memoirs, reveals that he has as much to teach us about the challenges leaders face today – and the fundamental values of courage, tenacity, leadership and moral conviction. 3.30pm Jenny Uglow Mr Lear: A Life of Art and Nonsense Acclaimed biographer Jenny Uglow brings us a joyful and moving appreciation of Edward Lear’s extraordinary life and work. From troubled childhood to striving artist, she tracks his swooping moods, passionate friendships, restless travels and complex poetic genius in her illustrated biography of Lear, as natural history artist, landscape painter, travel writer and loveable outsider

– as well as the much-loved author of ‘The Owl and the Pussy-Cat’ and a host of hilarious limericks. 7.00pm Elizabeth Day – How to Fail Inspired by her hugely popular podcast, How To Fail, novelist and former Observer journalist Elizabeth Day shares her Elizabeth Day brilliantly funny, painfully honest and insightful celebration of things going wrong. Part memoir, part manifesto, How to Fail is based on the simple premise that understanding why we fail ultimately makes us stronger. Uplifting, inspiring and rich in stories from her own life, Elizabeth reveals that failure is not what defines us; rather it is how we respond to it that shapes us as individuals.
Sat 8 June 5.00pm Ben McIntyre – The Spy & the Traitor Multimillion-copy bestselling author of books including Agent Zigzag, Operation Mincemeat, Ben McIntyre A Spy Among Friends and SAS: Rogue Heroes, Ben MacIntyre visits the Festival to reveal one of the boldest and most extraordinary episodes in the history of British spying. In his latest book The Spy and The Traitor, about a KGB double agent, Ben explores a tale of espionage, betrayal and raw courage that changed the course of the Cold War forever... ‘The best true spy story I have ever read’ John Le Carre To see the full programme and to keep up-to-date with the latest festival news, visit www.festivalinafactory.co.uk or follow us on Facebook or Twitter @SOTLitFestival

New Vic Borderlines Our award-winning Borderlines programme places the local community at the heart of its work. Engaging with individuals, groups and communities facing challenges – social and economic disadvantages, young people at risk of offending, adults with learning difficulties and others marginalised – through Borderlines we use theatre to help people find new and positive ways to understand themselves, their communities and their responsibilities.
Communities stream, the project will see New Vic Borderlines work with people who identify as having a disability to explore their experiences of society and work, times when they are overlooked or ‘invisible’ and the ways they would like to be seen and heard. Weekly sessions will begin in April and will ultimately form a new Now You See Us community company who will create, perform and present stories, poetry, artwork and installations.
Promoting social inclusion and diversity, we undertake projects in partnership with a wide range of partners. Inspiring arts programme Appetite to continue its work for another three years! Our Appetite programme, which aims to get more people living in Stoke-on-Trent to experience and be inspired by the arts, has been awarded a grant to continue its work for a further three years. Appetite is part of Arts Council England’s Creative People and Places Programme, which aims to transform arts activity through involvement of local people and seeks to get more people in the city engaged in the arts. Beginning in 2013, more than 450,000 people have enjoyed a feast of worldclass arts including The Enchanted Chandelier, which saw a floating, musical chandelier bewitch sold-out audiences in Central Forest Park, Hanley; performances from the Royal Opera House, reimagined for the streets of the City Centre at The Big Feast and renowned installation Museum of the Moon by Luke Jerram, at King’s Hall in Stoke.
“Superb performances, great atmosphere and generally fantastic” Audience member ROUNDABOUT 2018
In January 2019, Appetite partnered with Stoke-on-Trent City Council and the Cultural Forum to deliver the first Light Night Stoke-on-Trent. Building on the legacy of the city’s bid to be UK City of Culture 2021, Light Night, funded by Arts Council England and Stoke-on-Trent City Council, saw Burslem Town Centre illuminated with animated projections and glowing artworks from local, national and international artists. Keep an eye on what else is coming up for Appetite at appetitestoke.co.uk or newvictheatre.org.uk.
Most recently, in October 2018 Appetite presented pop-up theatre ROUNDABOUT in Queens Park in Longton. The project collaborated with residents in the south of the city to create a bespoke programme of cabarets, comedy, workshops and performance including the very first ‘F’antiques Roadshow’. Over 1200 visited this intimate theatre-in-the round to enjoy three brand-new plays from the critically acclaimed theatre company Paines Plough.
