Sat 3 September
10.00am - 4.00pm Join us for an extra-special Open Day as we celebrate 60 years of theatre making. Offering an access-all-areas look behind-thescenes, this is a great opportunity to see how we take our home-grown productions from page-to-stage. Explore our Costume, Design and Workshop departments, discover the technical magic used by Lighting and Sound teams to bring productions to life on stage and find out secret tricks-of-the-trade from the Stage Management team. Activities will be on offer throughout the day that all ages of the family can get involved with too! It’s a fabulous chance to see the theatre in action and to discover the history of Europe’s first purpose built theatre-in-the-round. And it’s all completely FREE! Keep an eye on the New Vic website for more news about the activities planned for the day and a full schedule of events.

In 15 years of joyfully making theatre for New Vic audiences, I don’t know if any production has given me as much joy as making Marvellous. Watching people leave the theatre happy and uplifted; reading the many messages and emails we received; seeing it featured on BBC news; Copy listening to children gurgling with laughter; meeting people who’d travelled from Essex and Edinburgh and Eastbourne to experience this extraordinary story and shake the hand of the man himself. And so it makes me very happy that we’ll be bringing this beautiful piece back to the New Vic stage this autumn. My favourite kind of theatre is the kind that welcomes a wide range of people all at the same time, all finding something wonderful in sharing an experience with each other. This was the case with Marvellous, and it’s always been the case with our Christmas shows. I’m so happy this year to be revisiting one of my favourites, Alice in Wonderland.
sound and stage management departments to discover more about what we do and how we do it. Please come and join us for these beautiful shows and other special experiences to celebrate our 60th. We feel so privileged to be able to make work for Staffordshire and for you. Theresa Heskins Artistic Director

I have a very clear memory of a New Vic Open Day where children gazed with fascination at the Cheshire Cat puppet that had been made by our brilliant workshop team. 2022 is our 60th anniversary year. We’ll be celebrating the craft of theatre making at the New Vic, and we’d love it if you would join us at our Open Day in September. We’ll be opening our doors and inviting you in to see how we make theatre happen: to look around our backstage areas, our workshops, our costume, props, lighting,

Stitching together 60 years of theatre making history The New Vic costume department is one of the many in-house teams at the New Vic who, over the past 60 years of our theatre making, help make the experience you have as an in-theround audience member so immersive. Every item of clothing that graces our stage has been meticulously thought through, with the most intricate eye for detail, just a few paces away from the auditorium. Having a costume department based in the same building as the theatre itself has its benefits – not only does it make the process more creative, collaborative and enjoyable but on a practical level, it makes costume fittings easier and speeds up decision making. Between them, the team have clocked up decades of costume making for the New Vic. Costume Technician Debbie Hall, who has gone from being a costume cutter to a maker, has worked at the theatre for 31 years.

“I think it is quite unique, I don’t know many other places where people have worked for the length of time we have,” she said.
exclusively so, I also do marking up, dying of fabrics, and ‘breaking down’ costumes [making them look old]. “It helps the process because we know what each other is thinking. Even though you’ve perhaps made something 100 times before, there’s always a different way. I’m fashion trained so I would come at things from a slightly different angle, maybe look at it and think ‘there’s a quicker way of doing that and it will still look exactly the same’. So we all learn from each other all the time, which is very useful. “I like to do things that are intricate and tailored and I would like to think that I strive for perfection which helps when you’re making something like an overcoat, which I’ve been making for Tom, Dick & Harry.” After the first meetings with a show’s production team, Head of Costume David Thorne will take the initial costume designs and undertake research to decide what is
“We do lots of different tasks within the room. I am a sewer, but not

best made, purchased or hired. From this, multiple budgets will be produced to cover any eventuality, and he’ll decide which members of the team will make the different elements required. Fittings for the actors are typically done during the first week of rehearsals, but for Christmas shows, work can begin as far as six weeks ahead. Many items are required for rehearsals to check they are functioning correctly when the actors are wearing them. Costume Cutter Karen Norcross-Downs said: “If you were doing a big 18th century frock it could be something like 100 to 120 hours work, but we don’t all do one costume ourselves. I would do the pattern stage of it, then somebody else would make it, then it would be fitted, then it would come back to me to be marked if there were any alterations to do. The Snow Queen dress that [actor] Polly Lister wore took about two and a half weeks to make. “On a traditional stage, you don’t always see the back of garments as much as the front – it still matters but in-the-round there’s a lot more detail paid to the back view of a costume because it’s seen by half of the audience as well.” Costume Cutter Alison Sunnuck, whose favourite costume to work on was a stunning dress in The Snow Queen covered completely in flowers, thinks it is ‘fantastic’ having an in-house designer to work with on many New Vic shows, as well as being able to liaise with the prop makers.
isn’t a quick way of doing a pattern.” It’s lucky then that not every item is made from scratch – the New Vic benefits from having a comprehensive ‘store’ of clothes on-site to dip into, so anything that’s been made or bought that the team think is worth keeping can be recycled, altered and reused. David said: “We try to reuse the less specific items as much as we can, but of course, everything has a shelf life – what works for one designer may not for another. However, as part of the design process, where sampling and reference is crucial, the store creates a brilliant ‘library’ of clothing that can be referred to and adapted.” Here’s to many more decades of our fabulous costume team working together to create amazing costumes, right here in Staffordshire! “Working with Lis Evans [Head of Design], she knows us all so well and we know what sort of things she wants,” she said. “Our job is to recreate what the designer wants, but she’d be quite happy for us to come up with ideas for trims and things like that. Technology hasn’t had an impact on us in the same way it would with other departments. We’re still using sewing machines and doing hand sewing, there

Planning Your Visit We want you to have the best experience possible when you visit the New Vic. To help you enjoy your visit, we’ve put some measures in place to help all visitors feel as comfortable as possible. E-TICKETS To minimise contact points, we will send your tickets to your email address at the point of purchase. You can choose to print your ticket out at home to bring along with you, or you can show us your ticket on your phone on entry to the auditorium. If you would prefer to collect your tickets from us on arrival, our Box Office will be happy to help. CLEANING AND VENTILATION Our air handling units ensure that we can circulate fresh air throughout the building and auditorium, and we are regularly monitoring the ventilation in all our spaces to protect our visitors and staff members. We are maintaining our high levels of cleanliness throughout the building before, during and after your visit, ensuring that all our spaces and contact surfaces are regularly sanitised. We have hand sanitiser stations situated throughout the building, free to use by all. You’ll see these available at our entrance, in our restaurant and outside our toilets. FEELING UNWELL? If you, or a member of your party, are exhibiting symptoms of Covid-19 prior to your visit, we politely ask that you do not attend the theatre. We are operating flexible ticketing – if you feel unwell and are unable to attend for your booked performance, call our Box Office team on 01782 717962 or email tickets@newvictheatre.org.uk to let us know. We can arrange for your tickets to be exchanged for another performance of the same production; provide you with a credit note for the value of your tickets to be used against a future booking; or give you a full refund – just let us know what you’d prefer. We’re continuing to offer some socially-distanced performances this season, to give you the option to see great theatre; just with a little more space. See the calendar on pages 44 - 45 or speak to our Box Office Team to find out more details. We hope that this information gives you the confidence to book tickets and return to the New Vic this season. If you have any questions, please contact tickets@newvictheatre.org.uk and we’ll be happy to answer any queries you may have. We look forward to seeing you soon.

This legendary escape story gets the New Vic treatment in an energetic adventure filled with dynamic drama, lots of laughter and some breath-taking theatricality. An exhilarating game of cat and mouse is afoot between the extraordinary prisoners of Stalag Luft III and their captors. Hiding covert activity in plain sight with gymnastic exercise, choir practice and cabbage growing (!), the men are tunnelling deep into the ground beneath their fortress of a camp. The most intricate, most audacious, greatest escape of them all is underway. But as suspicions start to rise with the camp’s guards, can the men complete their mission and escape using one of their tunnels – Tom, Dick or Harry? An incredible story of solidarity across nations, and of an unbreakable spirit to achieve the impossible! Be among the first to see Tom, Dick & Harry ahead of its transfer to London’s Alexandra Palace this summer. From the team that brought you Around The World In 80 Days, directed by Theresa Heskins (Olivier Awardwinning The Worst Witch) and co-produced by the New Vic Theatre and Kenny Wax Productions (The Play That Goes Wrong, Six The Musical), this brand new play debunks the myths, honours the people involved and tells the true story of the most daring escape attempt in World War History.

A story of the search for truth, justice and hope through three generations of women. What does it mean to have roots, to feel the connection of the land, mountains, rivers, trees; where deep song, music and poetry beats as your heart and the blood in your veins flows like a timeless river through a land for centuries? And then, hate spills into the soil, the trees, the rivers. What new songs can be sung and verses made? Before reconciliation comes acknowledgment, before hope, truth. ‘And the questioned gave then a prompt reply; Bosnia - forgive me - there is a land, Both barren And barefoot - forgive me – Both cold and hungry – but more than that - Forgive me – Defiant - through A dream’ Mak Dizdar

“Please tell me honestly if what I believe is true… that it’s the same with you – that you’ve fallen in love too.” Laura and Alec are married – but not to each other. A chance meeting at a railway station hurls them headlong into a whirlwind romance that threatens to blow their worlds apart. Will they give in to love’s first rush and risk everything? Has this relationship changed the tracks of their lives forever? This playful production turns Noël Coward’s film Brief Encounter inside out, adding joyous musical numbers and physical comedy, while still maintaining the truly classic romance of the original.

The high street might be struggling to get back to normal but the Shakers bar is under new management and they are determined to make it the place to be seen. Pubs are closing, Gin bars are so yesterday, and cocktails and decadence are back for the roaring 2020s, as the hospitality industry looks to a new future. Misogyny is rife, in the home, in the workplace, and on the streets. The walk home after closing feels longer than ever, the customers are getting more leering, the hours longer, but the pay hasn’t changed. For waitresses Adele, Nicky and Mel, their lives juggle home, work, school and everything in between, but how long can it be maintained? One of the New Vic’s best loved Christmas shows is back this festive season. Come and join us as we take a trip to Wonderland! Journey with Alice as she follows the White Rabbit into a curiously enchanting new world, filled with even curioser characters. As she searches for a way home, Alice encounters strange and whimsical people: a disappearing cat with a grin wider than she’s ever seen, a Mad Hatter whose tea party never quite serves tea, and a bad tempered Queen who is looking for her jam tarts… An adventure like no other, Alice In Wonderland is filled with fun, laughter, live music and lots of magical moments. Brought to life in the New Vic’s sensational trademark style from the same team who brought you our much-loved productions of The Snow Queen, Treasure Island and last year’s Beauty and The Beast, this is a story that will give the young – and young at heart – a joyful festive treat this year!

When Eric sees his local Amateur Dramatic Society are looking for men to take part in their Christmas production, he realises they must have an excess of women. As ‘an excess of women’ is Eric’s idea of heaven he signs up. However, double-bookings of the rehearsal space, an overenthusiastic Producer who is also the Director, Writer and Star of the Show (who would do a thing like that??) and the arrival of Bev to spoil his fun are all just the start of a disastrous production. Add to this 85-year old Miss Baskeyfield playing the juvenile female lead, four members of a pop group who don’t even want to be there and a sound man who appears to be doing his own show and things quickly go from bad to worse. But will Eric save the day and get a festive 5 star review or will he be the reason the local papers rate the play a ‘turkey’? Whatever happens, the show must go on…! A fun-packed festive treat, Eric’s Christmas Turkey is filled with sensational ’60s songs, lots of laughs, dancing, and Christmas sparkle – it’s a perfect way to start your Christmas celebrations!

We are celebrating 60 years of theatre making. Help us to look to the future and continue the tradition of excellent creative work in our area by becoming a New Vic Patron. The New Vic is here thanks to the vision and commitment of the local community, making theatre and changing lives. We also now understand that art and culture have a wider, measurable impact on our economy, health and wellbeing, society and education. The New Vic has seen and grown the value of this impact, and pre-pandemic we reached over 25,000 people a year through community and education work; we will do that again, with your support. We want to go on reaching out to our community for the next 60 years. But we cannot do this without the ongoing support we receive from audience members, through the New Vic Patrons. Regular monthly donations from New Vic Patrons have made a huge difference for us during the past 2 years. We are still here today thanks, in no small terms, to the important part our Patrons play in the ecology of the New Vic. Now, in order to ensure a healthy future for the New Vic, we need to grow the number of Patrons who regularly support the theatre. And what a year we have for you! We’ll be creating some truly special and unique moments to mark our 10th year and everyone’s invited. Bianco by NoFit State was the first ever show that Appetite bought to Stoke-on-Trent, wowing and amazing audiences and so we had to bring them back. With Sabotage you can expect an exceptional new large scale circus spectacular, but with a darker, grittier edge. Sabotage has an astounding international cast with performers from Albania to Ireland and Brazil to Wales. With awe-inspiring circus skills including aerial silks, breakdancing, duo trapeze, acrobatics, hula hooping, slack line, straps, and much more. Requardt & Rosenberg’s Future Cargo will be parking up in the heart of Newcastle-under-Lyme town centre on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 July. Presented by Appetite and The Place, this sci-fi dance spectacle gives audiences an immersive experience into the world of Future Cargo. Visually striking, it’s performed within a 40ft truck with the audience using headphones to experience the world inside the shipping container. The story? A mystery shipment arrives from an unknown location. There are reports of fireballs, power surges and electromagnetic waves in the area. As the side rolls up on a 40ft haulage truck, an enigmatic machine is revealed, and a strange and unstoppable process begins. We can’t wait to find out what happens next.

Accessible performances The New Vic welcomes all customers and is committed to providing access to the arts for all. Audio Described Audio description is a verbal commentary that explains what is happening on the stage during the parts of the performance where there is no dialogue. Socially-distanced performances These performances have reduced capacity, giving you extra empty seats around your booking, for a little extra space. Free parking available close to the theatre entrance for Blue Badge holders (reserve a space with our Box Office). Automatic doors and level access into the foyer, ramped access to the auditorium on the ground floor and lift access to the first floor. Wheelchair spaces available on both the ground and first floor. Accessible toilets available on both levels of the theatre. Our gender neutral toilet is situated on the ground level of the theatre. Sign-Language Interpreted performances Sign language performances convey the script of the show using hand gestures and movements, body language and facial expressions, instead of spoken words.
Assistance Dogs are welcome, and water will be provided. If you wish to take your dog into the auditorium, please let Box Office know when booking. Wearing the Sunflower lanyard discreetly indicates to people around the wearer that they may need additional support, help or a little more time. Whether you’re joining us for a casual lunch, a pre-show meal, or a slice of our scrumptious homemade cake – you’re always sure to have a warm welcome.
