Artistic Director comments

Good Sports Here at the New Vic we’re committed to doing everything we can to promote Staffordshire on the world stage. So we’re thrilled that Stoke-on-Trent has been named European City of Sport. Sport and the arts might be seen as opposite poles, but our taste in sport – whether as observers or participants, defines us culturally every bit as much as our taste in music, or choice of reading material. And, the more I think about it, the more I see how integrated the two are. A few years ago we worked with dancers, aerialists, crane drivers, designers and pyrotechnicians to create a spectacular celebration for an audience of 12,000 at

Spring 16 Mag.indd 4

the Olympic Torch Relay. Later we sat marvelling at the artistry of the opening ceremony, and felt part of a huge international coming-together of art and sport which persisted throughout the Games – in the use of music, for example; and in the media skills used to televise it, and more widely in the Cultural Olympiad across the nation. And it’s not just in event presentation that sport and the arts come together. With the work actors do being so physically demanding, fitness training is a crucial part of the preparation that goes into making a piece of theatre. They’ll often come into rehearsal having had a swim or a run that morning; and head off to the gym at the other end of the day. Sometimes they need to learn more specialist skills. For Robin Hood & Marian,

some of our actors will join a Newcastle archery group. Don’t worry, they’re not planning to fire arrows at the audience – we’ll use stage magic for that – but we want them to be able to use the equipment convincingly, and to know how it feels to be able to use a bow. For Kiss Me Quickstep, our actors will do four hours’ of ballroom dancing a day. Guess what? Competitive dancing is recognised as a sport – Dancesport. Although it doesn’t feature in the Games, it’s recognised by the International Olympic Committee. Later in the year, we hope to work with our partners Upswing on another piece of spectacular aerial theatre. Our actors will do gymnastics and strength training, and need to achieve a high level of cardio-vascular fitness.

It’s not just the actors who are sporty. Running is a big thing at the New Vic, with a club of staff members going out at lunchtime. Tea break chat is often about the last Parkrun, or a forthcoming half marathon. We want to do all we can to support City of Sport, so throughout the year we’re going to share with you what our actors, permanent staff and collaborators get up to in their sporting lives, in celebration of this important accolade.

The

Music Man

“We’re doing a show!” beams James Atherton to whoops of delight from the 24 children gathered in front of him. It may only be September, but this is the first rehearsal for the Robin Hood & Marian Young Company. Musical Director, James, is sitting behind a piano putting the performers through their paces. “It’s really great to have such a strong young company,” he says later: “They work their socks off to bring our songs to life.” Film, television and theatre composer James, has composed for big name documentaries such as the BBC’s Around the World in 80 Faiths and Tales from the National Parks. But our theatre-in-the-round is like a second home.

with a fair few other productions in between. He’s even made it on to the elite of the theatre’s running squad.

techniques used to take Robin Hood & Marian audiences on a journey through the production.

“Yes, I’m part of the New Vic running team, they’re a force to be reckoned with!” James laughs, continuing: “It’s only a matter of time before I combine both things and write a musical about running!”

“We’ve got quite a big filmic score this time, it will really swing through the high drama of the story,” he says: “In the past I’ve recorded some shows rather than play live, like Around the World in Eighty Days. These scores feel very filmic as the recording takes place in a studio so you can sound as if you have an entire orchestra at your disposal.

Today’s rehearsal space – the New Vic’s Stephen Joseph Room – is large enough to jog around, unlike the minuscule music store in which he and Artistic Director Theresa Heskins have been holed up writing songs.

“Often, when pieces are played live on-stage there is me and a few actormusicians playing. For Robin, it will be a fusion of the two things; live music alongside very clever music technology which you normally only find in a studio, plus the actor musicians.

“We’ve got quite a big filmic score this time, it will really swing through the high drama of the story,”

“We start planning really early; it begins even before the previous Christmas show has finished,” James says: “It starts with Theresa giving me a clear vision of what she wants to do with the production. In our early conversations we talk about style and genre – sometimes you get the genre straight away; with The Hundred and One Dalmatians we knew from the start that we needed 1950’s music.” He adds: “By the time rehearsals begin, all the songs are written so the actors bring it together; it’s only then that I can decide what the arrangement is going to be.” Stockport-based James explains the

“From beginning to end it will take the audience with it. Ten minutes into the production the music will become an underscore to the whole show.” James, a father of two and married to writer Sarah Nelson, is a pianist by trade but dabbles in many an instrument. He fondly recalls his grandfather teaching him to play the piano: “My grandfather was a pianist and we lived with them for a while; 7 | www.newvictheatre.org.uk

my grandparents had the upstairs of the house and we lived downstairs. I had a piano but didn’t really play it. “When I was around seven-years-old I went to see a show and I loved the music so when I got home I sat at the piano and worked out how to play this one song.”

too,” he recounts: “I stumbled into musical directing, doing a placement with English Touring Opera and, when I left Central, they gave me a job. I worked all over the UK, making new work with young singers.” James’ first foray into working with the New Vic came in 2009 when he composed for Youth Theatre production, The Garden.

And it all started from there. “My grandad and I used to play together; when I started getting better I would join in when I could hear him playing upstairs.” After pursuing an interest in drama at school and as part of numerous youth theatre groups, James went to Central School of Speech and Drama to study theatre. “It was a little bit like being at school, I was the person who played the piano and created the atmosphere. I started writing my own music and songs around this time

Spring 16 Mag.indd 8

“At that time Theresa was starting to think about The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and was looking for composers. She sent me the lyrics and I wrote the music,” he says: “I was really nervous, I’d already fallen in love with the space and I was desperate to work here with a professional company. The show was set in World War II so it connects to my grandad as he taught me the songs of that era. I did get the job and one of the pieces in the show was written by him.” In all the years he’s been associated with

the theatre-in-the-round, does a favourite show stand out? “I’ve got two…actually I’ve got loads and loads! I’ve got a little bit of love for them all,” he replies: “I really loved Alice in Wonderland and Around the World in Eighty Days was such good fun. In terms of Christmas, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is up there too.”

see the world in different ways,” he says. In addition to working on Robin Hood & Marian, James is currently collaborating with aerialists Upswing on their latest highflying project. He also recently revived his musical, Eyam, a production which was originally the subject of a BBC documentary and tells the story of a small Derbyshire village hit by the plague in 1665.

A man whose talents are quite clearly in demand, James frequently works in television and film and although he describes the big screen as ‘very exciting’, he is quick to point out that theatre is his first love. Alongside his composing expertise, he is Artistic Director of Oldham Theatre Workshop, a community theatre organisation which clearly gives him a lot of joy.

It’s certainly a busy life, and definitely never dull. As the interview draws to a close, I wonder if he ever ponders joining actors on-stage as he sits in the music corner that he so regularly calls home?

“I’m passionate about work with young performers and how theatre can help people

“Never!” he laughs: “All the actors are so brilliant it wouldn’t occur to me to want to be in their shoes. I love being on the stage but at the side, connected to it that way.”

The Annual Ballroom Dance Festival in the Winter Gardens, Blackpool. Photo: Theresa Heskins Spring 16 Mag.indd 10

23/10/2015 16:28

Like many people, my interest in ballroom and Latin was sparked by Strictly Come Dancing. I’ve never learned to quickstep and have no desire to. (Well, perhaps a little desire but who doesn’t?) I loved the spectacle and style of it all but was also fascinated by what lies behind the fake tan and fixed smiles of the dancers. In 2012, I was one of six writers offered a Making Tracks bursary to make a creative journey. My fellow playwrights went to Sarajevo, Athens and Kosovo. I drove up the M6 to Blackpool in June for its annual Dance Festival. If there was a play in ballroom, this seemed like the right place to start. Held in the Winter Gardens, this international tournament sees 60 countries represented by almost 3,000 couples. Twelve competitions make up the event, with professional and amateur, rising stars and senior categories. With 250 couples in the British Professional Rising Stars Latin competition alone, Blackpool comes alive with dancers. In the cafés, streets and B&Bs, the circus is truly in town. As a spectator, I soon felt like I’d slipped down a rabbit hole into wonderland. The world felt completely off-kilter, full of surreal images and a strange kind of beauty. The glamour and glitz was all there but so were the steely eyed-stares and sharp elbows. The dancing was brilliant and the dancefloor a gladiatorial arena where winning was everything.

One of the most remarkable sights was the sheer number of dancers who prepared not in dressing rooms but on Amanda Whittington Photo by Kurt Egyiawan the edge of the ballroom. Wherever you looked were open suitcases with dresses spilling out and immaculate tail-suits hung in stairwells. All around the dancefloor, dancers were making-up and warming-up in full public view. A young woman in full costume was sat on the floor with her head in her hands. This became a starting point for the play I now knew was there. I shared the photos I’d taken of the dancers with Theresa Heskins, who’d also been thinking of a ballroom show for the New Vic. We began to imagine how a play might explore both the dazzling performance and off-stage reality of the competitors’ lives. We went back to Blackpool for the British championship, soaking up the atmosphere and glimpsing colourful characters in dark corners. In a mirror-ball light, Kiss Me Quickstep was born.

Amanda Whittington Kiss Me Quickstep opens on Friday 4 March

relocated, new carpets and furniture throughout, energy efficient lighting and a stunning design scheme – don’t miss the lampshades featuring costume sketches by our Head of Design, Lis Evans and props from our favourite productions which decorate bar and café feature walls. Extra space in the bar area has been created by replacing the old balcony so more of you than ever before can eat, drink and be merry – be it enjoying a meal or drink before a show or just for a spot of lunch in comfy surroundings. Backstage, we’ve installed secondary glazing and have added new insulation to the roofs of our workshops to make the building more energy efficient. The auditorium hasn’t been left out, with new carpet, a new house-light system and renumbered seating. Part of the cost for this work was met by Lottery funding through Arts Council England. We’re also hugely grateful to support from bet365 Foundation, Staffordshire County Council, Stoke-on-Trent City Council, Newcastle Players and the Garfield Weston Foundation. Make sure to let us know what you think!

Join him and his multi-talented band of actors and musicians for a night of non-stop comedy, inspired mayhem, and some of the greatest music of the 1960s. It’ll be the best night out this Christmas – guaranteed! Eric’s been invited to a special Christmas Party at Hanley’s top 60s nightspot, The Place. He’s never heard of it but, when he finds out that the guest list includes Pete Townsend of The Who, Brian Poole of The Tremeloes, Sandie Shaw, Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones, and other 60s pop icons he can’t wait to go. Can this be true? Will our hero be mingling with some of the biggest pop stars of the 1960s? Will this be his chance to break into the music industry big time? Or will it be more Hard Day’s Night than Glad All Over? It certainly sounds like an opportunity to play more than 20 of the greatest 60s hits and have a Christmas party night to remember. So that’s just what we’ll do then!

It uses the actual words of young people who experienced the events leading to the Holocaust – from their diaries, letters and poems. The Best thing

A swinging sixties story of unconditional love from the UK’s leading full mask theatre company Step into the wordless world of Vamos Theatre for this bitter-sweet story of mistaken morals and broken hearts, 45s and beehives, where sexual revolution proves a hard and rocky path to tread. It’s 1966. The record player’s on and for seventeen year old Susan, life is an adventure waiting to begin. But what happens next turns everything upside down, and life will never be the same again. Funny, heart-breaking and human, The Best Thing is the latest production from one of the country’s must-see theatre companies. This production is equally accessible to hearing and deaf audiences.

YIZKOR - a date to remember “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” A powerful New Vic Borderlines documentary drama, inspired by the experiences of Holocaust survivors, is set to tour for the fourth time to mark United Nations International Holocaust Memorial Day. Yizkor is in the New Vic’s documentary style and was written using the testimonies of teenagers who lived during the Holocaust. Every word is authentic and accurate, drawn from letters, diaries, poems and interviews. Written and directed by Sue Moffat, Director of award-winning community programme New Vic Borderlines, Yizkor was inspired by Holocaust survivors, Ibi and Waldemar Ginsburg, who worked with Borderlines for many years as part of its Holocaust education programme. Sue Moffat says: “Over the years New Vic

Borderlines has worked with thousands of local young people to present the stories of Holocaust survivors and survivors of other genocides. Yizkor helps ensure these stories are heard by future generations.” Sue added: “The word ‘Yizkor’ means ‘to remember’ and the play challenges us to remember our own individual responsibility to speak up and speak out.” The performance of Yizkor at the New Vic on Mon 25 January begins at 7.30pm and will follow an address

Appetite is here to challenge and change attitudes and behaviours to the arts by bringing fresh, exciting and memorable events to the city. We have seen some real changes in audiences with more than half of our audience not being regular arts attenders.
