What with transferring productions to New York, Florida and the West End I’ve been getting about a fair bit recently. One of the things that’s most struck me has been learning how much America values British theatre. Being on Broadway with Around The World in 80 Days, right next door to Harry Potter, brought home to me the role of arts as one of our most significant national exports.

UK found that creative and cultural participation makes a greater contribution to well-being in later life than any other factor, including financial wealth or friends; it is described in the report as quite simply one of the things that makes life worth living. It reminded me of Churchill’s apocryphal comment when asked to support the war effort by cutting funding to the arts: “then what are we fighting for?”

I’m sure it’s one of the reasons why the arts industry delivers such huge economic benefits to the UK. Did you know that government subsidy of culture results in £5 of tax paid for every £1 invested? I didn’t, till the Arts Council recently published a report outlining that. Wish I could get find a bank that would give me interest rates like that.

We have a halo effect: investment attracts additional investment, increases civic pride, and contributes to regeneration in a way that’s been recognised and outlined by the City Council as they’ve looked over the tremendous benefits of bidding to be City Of Culture - ‘losing the bid but winning with culture’.

And that’s only the current situation. The creative industries are the UK’s fastest growing industry. We are responsible for one job in every 11, and jobs are growing at four times the national average. Our economic impact is significant, but it’s only the start of the story. As a society we are only just beginning to understand how to assess the social worth of the arts industry. The health and well-being impacts we have on a wide range of people who are experiencing challenges including school holiday hunger, isolation in older life, homelessness, criminal or anti-social behaviour are significant. We engage with a high proportion of school-aged children, making contributions to their education and inspiring their teachers.

And we offer a conduit for others to give back to their community. That may be through charitable and philanthropic donations to support our work, or it may be through donating one’s time as a volunteer. The tremendous value and impact of the amazing people who volunteer to support their community through the New Vic has recently been recognised, as Front-of-House volunteers have been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. Tue 16 July 4.00pm & 7.30pm Dream Big. Work Hard. Stand Proud…. Fly High What does it mean to be a ‘high flyer’ today? Can everyone truly be successful? At what cost is success achieved? And what does the world look like for those who fear they may be left behind? Developed, performed and with a script written by a cast of local young people, this production explores what impact younger, growing voices have on the world and questions who, if anyone, is really listening? High Flyers is a brand new musical exposing the highs (and lows) of growing up in the modern age.

Pay What You Decide Supported by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation, young people from Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent were invited to come along and work with our award-winning Borderlines department to create a brand new musical. This is a great opportunity to enjoy a new piece of work, created by members of your local community and support them as they take to a stage for the first time – and your ticket price is completely decided by you! All we ask, is that you book a ticket in advance.

Blackadder meets Carry On as we travel 400 years back in time to meet Uncle Eric’s ancestor, Edric the Smith. Surprisingly, he’s a lazy, unemployed, good-for-nothing who relies for money on his wife, Mistress Merrily, landlady of the Talke Inn. Could this man really be Eric’s ancestor?? When William Shakespeare arrives at the inn their world is turned upside down and a host of questions have to be answered. What is Edric’s codpiece really hiding? What does She Loves You sound like when played on a lute? And did Edric really write The Bard’s best lines? Yes, it’s Eric and the gang with a brand new Shakespearean comedy! It might be set in Tudor times but, once again, it’s a fabulous night of comedy and the greatest hits of the 1960s!

‘We are both Britain’ Over the course of a decade, two of Britain’s most iconic women meet regularly. In private. Sharing their views on what it means to be British and navigating their opposing opinions, do their smiles tell a true story? What actually happened behind those closed doors? The meetings between Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher became infamous in the ’80s. In this theatrical comedy, Moira Buffini imagines their relationship, and looks at what might have happened when two of the most powerful characters of our time came face-to-face. Sharply funny, packed with satirical humour and highly entertaining, Handbagged will make you question what you think you know about the people who lead us, and features the Monarch, the Prime Minister and a host of surrounding characters including Ronald and Nancy Reagan, Geoffrey Howe, Denis Thatcher plus many more! Fiona Buffini (The Widowing of Mrs Holroyd) returns to the New Vic to direct her sister’s play, ahead of their next production together at the National Theatre next Spring.

By Harold Pinter Directed by Michael Cabot

Tue 1 – Sat 5 October Tickets from £15.50 See pages 4 & 5 for details Please note: Contains very strong language. Age recommendation 16+

A chance meeting between two elderly writers in a North London pub leads to an alcohol-fuelled night of reminiscences and verbal sparring. Hirst, a wealthy recluse, invites Spooner, a down-at-heel poet, to his Hampstead townhouse for a nightcap. As the shadows lengthen and the whisky flows, their stories become more elaborate and improbable, until the arrival of two younger men forces events to take an unexpected turn. In his most beguiling and atmospheric play, Pinter interweaves truth, language and memory to create a world of dark comedy and subtle power games. Originally staged at the Old Vic, London in 1975, Peter Hall’s iconic production of No Man’s Land starred John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson. Playwright, director, actor, poet and political activist, Harold Pinter wrote 29 plays including The Caretaker, Old Times, Betrayal and The Homecoming. In 2005, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

When families get together to celebrate a special occasion, there’s a danger that all hell will break loose. Particularly if you happen to be trapped for several days with all your relatives and copious amounts of alcohol... Neville and Belinda are hosting their extended family over a long weekend. The presence of two tyrannical uncles – Bernard, whose ham-fisted annual puppet shows are a source of dread to young and old alike, and TV addict Harvey – promises to stir up trouble from the start. And that’s before you add to the mix broken toys, creaking marriages and guest novelist Clive, whose relationship with Belinda’s sister Rachel is going nowhere, causing him to look for love elsewhere. Directed by the author, don’t miss this rare opportunity to see a sparkling new production of a truly classic Ayckbourn comedy.

Adrian has, according to his parents, a certain reputation regarding women and they feel meek, mild-mannered Grace should surely be warned of this. But are things really as they appear? As birthday follows birthday, prepare to be amazed as the truth is finally revealed about Adrian, the suburban closet Lothario! The perfect ‘60s musical for Christmas!

Mon 2 – Sat 14 December Tickets from £19.50 See pages 4 & 5 for details

It’s coming up to Christmas and Eric’s joined an amateur dramatic society (for all the wrong reasons). They’re about to put on a production of everyone’s favourite panto, Cinderella, and Eric’s been cast as one half of the Ugly Sisters. However, behind-the-scenes, things are far from a fairy-tale. The Fairy Godmother can’t find her sparkle, the Wicked Stepmother is busy being happy, Buttons really is in love with Cinderella and Prince Charming is anything but! As real-life jealousies, arguments and relationships spill over onto the stage, will the clock strike midnight on the production? Or can Eric find a way to stop them all turning into pumpkins? Whatever happens, the show must go on, and there’s no doubt this show will be filled with plenty of 60s music and loads of laughter to make this the perfect festive night out!

Behind the bar of their northern pub, the Landlord and Landlady welcome their regulars with open arms. Lending an ear for stories of celebration, of loss, of love and of despair, the bickering couple work together to keep the locals in high spirits – with drinks, conversation and laughter. But what is their story? As a lost boy turns up on their doorstep looking for his Dad, the couple must confront their own demons and perhaps, for the first time in years, talk to each other… Performed by two actors playing all 14 characters, Jim Cartwright’s poignant play takes audiences into the world of a working-class pub over the course of one night. Weaving together rich stories full of human emotion, this dark-comedy gives an intimate insight into a variety of characters and will make you laugh, and cry, in equal measure.

New Vic Borderlines Our award-winning Borderlines programme places the local community at the heart of its work. Engaging with individuals, groups and communities facing challenges – social and economic disadvantages, young people at risk of offending, adults with learning difficulties and others marginalised – through Borderlines we use theatre to help people find new and positive ways to understand themselves, their communities and their responsibilities. Promoting social inclusion and diversity, we undertake projects in partnership with a wide range of partners. With an aim to stimulate social change, Borderlines has been recognised as a leading national model for how theatre can be used to positively impact on our society.

Find out more about New Vic Borderlines at newvictheatre.org. uk/education-and-community/ borderlines Denise Coates Foundation support Borderlines’ work with disadvantaged young people.

This season look out for: Now You See Us: Do you have experience of living with disability? Join us and contribute to Borderlines’ work with the national D4D project - an ongoing research programme investigating the changing ways in which disabled people express, perform, experience and practice ‘community’. Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s Connected

Master_Autumn_19_in_progress_Final.indd 37

Communities stream, the project will see New Vic Borderlines work with people who identify as having a disability to explore their experiences of society and work, times when they are overlooked or ‘invisible’ and the ways they would like to be seen and heard. This project will ultimately form a new Now You See Us community company who will create, perform and present stories, poetry, artwork and installations. The community workshops are free of charge. RESIST: A New Vic Borderlines Building Stronger Britain Together project, RESIST stands for Resisting Extremist Sentiment Innovating Solutions Together. The first phase of the project will work with the community to explore ideas about what extremism means to them, what form it may take, how do extreme feelings or sentiments begin and what do they look, sound and feel like when they begin to emerge. The sessions will be fun and interactive and provide a space where people can be honest without fear of being judged. If you would like to talk in more detail about getting involved in any of our projects, contact rreddihough@ newvictheatre.org. uk or amahmood@ newvictheatre.org.uk

A Broadway Adventure… The New Vic’s adventure with Around The World in 80 Days began in 2013 when it took centre-stage for the first time. Since then, we’ve literally taken our own trip around the world… The response we had in 2013 was a rather brilliant surprise. Artistic Director Theresa Heskins’ take on Jules Verne’s classic novel was an instant hit with local audiences, with families making repeated trips to see the show and aspiring Passepartouts recreating their favourite scenes in the foyer. Calls from audience members to bring the production back became a daily occurrence and our hardworking and ever-talented cast and creative team enjoyed standing ovation after standing ovation. The decision to revive the production soon followed, with the cast and creative team reuniting on home turf the following year before transferring to the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester. The first co-production between the two theatres in-the-round was equally triumphant, with the Exchange reporting daily queues for tickets and their best social media response for a show ever. But the story, and the production’s impact, didn’t end there. Word of the much-loved

Master_Autumn_19_in_progress_Final.indd 40

production had spread beyond the realms of Staffordshire and talks with producers Kenny Wax Family Entertainment and Simon Friend saw it return again, in 2017, before embarking on a major six month UK wide tour, including a six week London run. The tour saw our creative team completely redesign the show– turning it from an in-theround production, to an ‘end-on’ play. The cast rehearsed the production at the New Vic, and once it opened to home audiences they re-rehearsed the play in its ‘end-on’ format during the day, before performing to Staffordshire audiences in-the-round in the evening – no rest for the wicked! Almost 60,000 people saw Around The World In 80 Days on its national tour in 2017, and off the back of its success across the country, America beckoned! Our first venture stateside for our first international tour took in New York’s Broadway theatre district before hotfooting it down the coast to Florida.

‘a delightful blend of theatrical imagination, performances, props, costumes and lighting to make you believe just about anything can happen on a stage’ Herald Tribune, Sarasota, Florida “Let’s hope this terrific show tours around the world forever...” New York Stage Cut to 9am on a warm morning in May 2019. A host of American yellow school buses park up outside the aptly named New Victory Theatre on 42nd Street, New York, and children and teenagers of all ages spill out on to the street anticipating what they are about to see at the theatre. Just over two hours later, they emerge back into the daylight full of joy having just experienced the New Vic Theatre’s production of Around The World In 80 Days, direct from Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire.

“New York Times Critic’s Pick” After our time in the Big Apple, our brilliant company travelled south, to sunny Sarasota, Florida and the Asolo Rep Theatre. On the beach, our team brought Fogg’s journey to life once more in this brilliant theatre. And there was even time to pay a visit to The Ringling Circus Museum which truly felt like home when we spotted a homage to the

Master_Autumn_19_in_progress_Final.indd 41

birth of modern circus and a mention of Philip Astley and Newcastle-under-Lyme. What an adventure we’ve been on! We couldn’t be more proud of this production and it was truly an honour to be able to share work made here, in Newcastle-underLyme, with international audiences. Seeing our name up in lights on Broadway was a real thrill for many reasons – not least because we know how much this show means to you, our audiences at home and how it will live long in your memories, as well as ours, for years to come.
