Shows that began life here at the New Vic have been making an impact all over the world this year. We took our much-loved production of Around The World in 80 Days off to the US in May – to the New Victory Theatre in New York, and then on to Florida. And LEXICON, the spectacular show that we commissioned to kick off our Circus Past, Present and Future season in 2018 has toured to the likes of Melbourne, Australia; Marseille and Lyon, France; Narberth, Wales; Antwerp, Belgium and it’s back in the UK at Roundhouse, London in January 2020. We’re so proud work we’ve made here in Staffordshire is making waves all across the globe!

From initial discussions to first production, a New Vic season is usually two years in the making. People are often surprised that it takes so long. The 2020 season has taken even longer, because these are some very special plays, and we’ve been absolutely longing to bring them to you. We welcome director Ruth Carney, who was born and brought up in Kidsgrove and has recently returned to live in the area. With Two she will direct her first production on the New Vic stage. You probably know her work already, from TV programmes like Casualty and Emmerdale. It’s great to see people like Ruth returning to their theatre roots. In rehearsal for last year’s The 39 Steps, I regularly laughed till I cried. It was a delight to see audiences responding the same way, and then returning for a second visit, wanting to share the hilarity with friends and family. We knew we had to bring the show back. I’m bracing myself for another draught of this laughter tonic, and looking forward to sharing the heady brew with friends old and new. Our production of Dracula in 2015, described as “contributing to a revolution in theatre sound design”, was named one of The Observer’s best shows of that year. A rare stage version of Angela Carter’s spine-tingling story The Company of Wolves is the perfect follow-up. Horror is a genre rarely visited on stage.
Werewolves perhaps even more so. But staging the impossible is our speciality... We’ve been working for some time with the local legend that is Neil “Nello” Baldwin on how to tell the story of his life. He’s such a fascinating and wonderful man - and such an inspiration. We’re delighted that he’s become an unofficial mascot for the New Vic, just as he did for Keele University and Stoke City FC. His recipe for happiness has rubbed off on us, and the play we are making about him will be full of his mischievous brand of humour, charm, joy and inspiration. I’ve had some amazing theatre adventures this year - in New York, Florida and the West End - and what they’ve taught me is how lucky I am to work alongside the incredible artists, craftspeople and theatre experts at the New Vic, making plays for the extraordinary people who live here. I can’t wait to share this new theatre adventure of these amazing plays with you. Theresa Heskins Artistic Director @TheresaHeskins

The New Vic’s Next Stage… In the summer of 2020, we’re planning our biggest capital redevelopment project since the theatre opened as we refurbish the New Vic auditorium! New seats, improved aisle lighting, a new stage, a redeveloped balcony and much more… Our key aim is to make sure the New Vic we all know and love is the best it can be for theatregoers now and for future generations of theatregoers in years to come. With the support of local people, who raised over £1 million to build a new theatre, the New Vic opened its doors in August 1986. But, after 33 years of successful productions, projects and events, and after welcoming over three million audience members through our doors, our auditorium is in urgent need of refurbishment.
Why are we doing the work? In a typical week, our auditorium plays host to spectacular productions, ground-breaking community projects through our Borderlines department and young people’s work through our Education Team, plus much more. It’s a busy place almost every day of the year. Up until recently, the whole space has stood up well to wear and tear. But now the time has come to make a significant investment in the auditorium for the future. Initial plans for the works have been reviewed by our major funder Arts Council England and they have given the green light to supporting the project with £353,225 of funding if we are able to raise the rest of the funds needed for it to go ahead. What are we going to do? In June 2020, following the last performance of The Company of Wolves (see page 26), we will close our auditorium for an extended period across the summer to complete works in the theatre. We plan to: • Replace all seats in the auditorium • Update and improve aisle lighting • Redevelop the balcony area • Replace the stage floor
Around The World In 80 Days, 2017
Master_Spring_20_in_progress_Map_Change2_inProgress.indd 4
And if we can raise the funds we would also like to use this opportunity to refurbish the New Vic toilets to bring them up-to-date and be the best they can be for all our visitors.

Our building will remain open throughout the redevelopment period as we deliver our summer programme, including young people’s holiday activities and summer schools, and continue to serve home-cooked food from the theatre Café . We’ll also begin rehearsing for the production that will reopen the newly refurbished auditorium in September – see page 28 for more details about Marvellous! How can you help? Our creativity knows no bounds but our resources do. The Arts Council have invested in our capital project but we need to raise the remaining funds ourselves.
Astley’s Astounding Adventures, 2018
We need your help. With your support we’ll be able to complete all the work we urgently need to ensure our auditorium remains the special place we know it is, for generations to come! You can play a part in the New Vic’s future by donating to our Full Circle Appeal.
Help us transform our auditorium for generations to come! Behind the bar of their northern pub, the Landlord and Landlady welcome their regulars with open arms. Lending an ear for stories of celebration, of loss, of love and of despair, the bickering couple work together to keep the locals in high spirits – with drinks, conversation and laughter. But what is their story? As a lost boy turns up on their doorstep looking for his Dad, the couple must confront their own demons and perhaps, for the first time in years, talk to each other… Performed by two actors playing all 14 characters, Jim Cartwright’s poignant play takes audiences into the world of a working-class pub over the course of one night. Weaving together rich stories full of human emotion, this dark-comedy gives an intimate insight into a variety of characters and will make you laugh, and cry, in equal measure.

A lyrical piece about existing on the cusp of growing up. Are we teenagers? Are we children? What are we? It’s about bodies in flux and perspectives shifting; knowing change is coming, but not what that change will look like. Set in and around a swimming pool, The Changing Room follows a group of teens full of excitement, impatience and uncertainty, each with their own secret worries and desires for what comes next. With a full young band and a large cast, the New Vic Youth Theatre tackle big questions such as “When are we ready to take the plunge into adulthood?” For those who are, or who have ever been teenagers, this big joyful musical is performed by the New Vic Youth Theatre as part of National Theatre Connections. Each year the National Theatre commissions ten new plays for young people to perform, bringing together some of the UK’s most exciting writers with the theatre-makers of tomorrow. 300 youth theatre companies and over 6,000 young people from every corner of the UK are producing a Connections play this year.

A thrilling retelling of a real-life murder mystery… Summer, 1827. In a red barn Maria Marten awaits her lover. A year later her gruesomely murdered body is found in a grain sack, barely identifiable. Maria’s story sent shockwaves throughout the country. The Red Barn Murder (as it became known) was national news, inspiring writers and film makers down the ages. The sort of gruesome tale that had all the hallmarks of a classic crime drama - a missing body, a country location, a disreputable squire and a village stuck in its age-old traditions. But in all this hysteria Maria’s own story gets lost. Until now. Hal Chambers and Beth Flintoff’s spine-tingling retelling rediscovers her story, bringing it back to vivid, urgent life. “Rich and transporting” The Stage “Well worth catching on its tour” Libby Purves, Theatre Cat “Superbly staged” British Theatre Guide

Phoebe Throssel lives on Quality Street, the bustling hub of a quaint northern town where she runs a school for unruly children. Ten years since a tearful goodbye, an old flame returns from fighting Napoleon. But the look of disappointment on Captain Valentine’s face when he greets a more mature, less glamorous Phoebe, spurs our determined heroine to action. She becomes the wild and sparkling Miss Livvy, a younger alter-ego who soon entraps the clueless Captain. As their romance is rekindled, can she juggle both personas? Or will her deception scandalise the town and wreck any future with the man she loves? J.M. Barrie’s delicious farce, written years before his now much-loved Peter Pan, was so well known in its day that it gave its name to the UK’s most popular chocolates, made in Halifax since 1936. In Laurie Sansom’s directorial debut for Northern Broadsides, this rare revival also features a commentary from the Quality Street™ factory workers, whose own stories of hapless romance and growing old disgracefully give the show a playful Yorkshire twist.

Imaginative staging, evocative soundscapes and spectacular aerial movement combine as Theresa Heskins uses her trademark theatrical invention to bring Angela Carter’s gripping horror story to life. In this rare stage version, The Company of Wolves is filled with danger, desire and suspense - a story of terror and transformation unlike anything you have experienced before. “Fear and flee the wolf…” A dark night, in the grip of midwinter. A sense of foreboding fills the air. A girl sets off for grandmother’s house. A wolf howl echoes around the forest… Her fellow townsfolk tell tales of beasts who hunger for blood and darkness, prowling the edges of the forest path, waiting for victims. But Red Riding Hood doesn’t believe in fear. Strong-minded, armed with a carving knife and a cunning mind, she feels invincible. A chance meeting with a huntsman turns an innocent journey into a seductive and terrifying race. Locked in a battle of wills, who will win the race and claim their victim? The Company of Wolves is adapted from Angela Carter’s renowned radio play and novella - an enticing drama of epic proportions.

An epic story of an extraordinary life. This might sound like a tall tale; one you won’t believe. It’s a tale filled with football stars, comedians and bishops; circus acts, budgies and politicians; mayors and Her Majesty and a B.E.M. This is a story of a fantastical life. From the moment he was born, Neil knew he was destined to do wonderful things. And so that’s what he did. He joined a church choir then appeared on Songs of Praise; he hitchhiked across the country then became a famous clown; he went to see his local football team then became their kit man; he left school at 14 with no qualifications then received an honorary degree from Keele University. And he became a hero. Created in conjunction with the man himself, in her brandnew production, Artistic Director Theresa Heskins brings together six actors, a playful script, lots of physical comedy and her inimitable style to tell the story of Neil ‘Nello’ Baldwin: a life-affirming, uplifting account about how to realise your dreams – even when society tries to limit you with a label.

On the road with
Growing up in the artistic milieu of his famous father Dave, Darius has enjoyed a lifetime of varied international experience as a band leader, composer, teacher and broadcaster. Darius’ lyrical, yet emotive delivery is very reminiscent of his father’s devotion to exploring different time signatures and grooves spurred on with that classic 1959 LP, Time Out, which featured Blue Rondo a la Turk and, of course, the chart-topping classic, Take Five. This evening will feature a mixture of standards, some of father Dave’s hits, South African jazz and originals, including new compositions from their recently released Live In Poland CD, recorded at Poland’s Poznan Blue Note.
