I’m always glad to welcome new creatives to the Vic, so I’m delighted to introduce director Nikolai Foster. I’m familiar with Nikolai’s work at West Yorkshire Playhouse, where he’s created many productions including a thrilling Sherlock Holmes and a moving and memorable Annie. I look forward to working with Polly Lister. She’ll be joining us to play Cruella in The Hundred and One Dalmatians, and I’m fascinated to see how such a lovely woman will bring this arch villainess to life. Polly already knows our theatre quite well: living not far away she pops down to see shows from time to time and, back in 2005, appeared in our production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It.. Finally, a little hint about something to

come later in the year. So many people have asked whether we might remount Around the World in Eighty Days that we decided to listen to what we’re being told and bring the show back. I’m delighted that actors Mike Hugo and Andy Pollard will join us to circumnavigate the globe again, and we’ll also take the show to meet a new audience at that other wonderful theatre-in-the-round, Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre.

“I can’t believe it!” she exclaims: “I’d lost count but when I started totting up all the shows I had designed I realised that this would be the 101st.” It’s a feat which comes in the same year that Lis celebrated her 25th anniversary working at the New Vic, during which she has exhibited at the world’s greatest museum of art and design, London’s Victoria and Albert, has travelled to China with Northern Broadsides and has become the theatre’s much-loved maker of leaving cards for departing staff.

Fresh from visiting the World Stage Exhibition, she is now in her office surrounded by sundry sketchbooks and scraps of spotted fabric. Designs for the Christmas show and the forthcoming co-production with Northern Broadsides, An August Bank Holiday Lark, sit alongside family photos on a busy noticeboard. It’s certainly a long way from the days she spent persuading her teachers in Barry, South Wales, that she was going to art college. “I remember when everyone was filling out forms for university my teachers were saying I hadn’t done mine,”

“Initially I didn’t feel confident enough to go straight into design work so I did prop-making and scene painting,” Lis says: “I really felt that if I ultimately wanted to be a designer I needed to know more about the practical side of how things were made.” It was the New Vic which provided a more permanent starting point, but her initial interview wasn’t all plain sailing. “I had my whole leg in plaster because some scenery had fallen on me in another job,” she laughs: “I was taken to the spiral staircase in the atrium and told to go to the costume department for my interview. I’d worn a long skirt hoping no one would notice the plaster cast but I knew I wouldn’t make it down those stairs!” Since her first design job, Alan Ayckbourn’s Intimate Exchanges directed by Chris Martin, the list of productions she has put her skills to is extensive. orking in partnership with other organisations is important to the New Vic, and so we’re glad to have long term relationships with companies including the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Northern Broadsides, Bolton Octagon and Oldham Coliseum. You may have read in the last brochure about the three year partnership we’ve embarked on with the rSC’s Learning and Performance Network; and I’m delighted to be able to announce another inspiring partnership: with the National Theatre Studio. Which is how I find myself in London on a blistering day in July. The thermometer’s hitting 32C on the streets outside, but in the

orking in partnership with other organisations is important to the New Vic, and so we’re glad to have long term relationships with companies including the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Northern Broadsides, Bolton Octagon and Oldham Coliseum. You may have read in the last brochure about the three year partnership we’ve embarked on with the rSC’s Learning and Performance Network; and I’m delighted to be able to announce another inspiring partnership: with the National Theatre Studio. Which is how I find myself in London on a blistering day in July. The thermometer’s hitting 32C on the streets outside, but in the

adventures: in the past, we staged a show in a Medieval castle, complete with army jeeps and castle-sized video projection and a band flown over from the Punjab; another experiment saw a horse gallop into the outdoor playing space as night fell and blazing torches were lit. Those escapades seem now easy compared to the current one, where we’re trying to plot a thriller to take place on a steam train. Not a stage steam train. A real, live, moving one. We’re wondering if we could take an audience to meet characters in ticket offices, tea rooms, and waiting rooms; then board the train together where the drama would continue, spreading out onto the platforms, bridges, canals, and other elements of landscape we might see as we travel. And then the idea grows: perhaps this steam train thriller could happen on any train, anywhere in the country… 12 | www.newvictheatre.org.uk

Well, the Studio team had described their role as offering ‘a chance to dream’, and so I’d set about dreaming up the most complex, impossible things I could think of. Another idea I’ve developed there over the summer is for a piece about the Staffordshire Hoard. This Anglo-Saxon treasure has captured the imagination of people near and far, and I’m keen that the New Vic should make a piece of work about it. It will be years till archaeologists are able to tell its story; so I spent time at the Studio, and in Stoke and Birmingham, in search of the story the New Vic might tell. I met with historian Michael Wood, who was full of ideas and inspiration; sat with conservators as they spent hours and hours scratching away at a tiny item with a thorn plucked from a garden shrub; talked with archaeologists and others who’d been there when the hoard was discovered; asked passersby what they thought of the

It takes a long time to develop an idea from scratch, and these two ideas are both pretty gigantic, so it may be quite a while until you hear of these ideas coming to our stage, but I’ll be working away on them in the background, along with several other exciting projects that are in the pipeline. I and others from the New Vic will also be working on other ideas with the National Theatre Studio team, including hosting a visit from an emerging director next spring. I’ll keep you informed via Twitter and in other ways; and hopefully, in the fullness of time, you’ll start to see the fruits of the relationship on our stage. See tweets @TheresaHeskins

Northern Broadsides in partnership with the New Vic presents

An August Bank Holiday Lark

a new play by Deborah McAndrew directed by Barrie Rutter

An idyllic summer in 1914 rural Lancashire. Excitement is building for Wakes week and the annual rushbearing Festival with its singing, courting, drinking and dancing. The looming war barely registers … An August Bank Holiday Lark is a gentle, deeply moving drama poised at the tipping point between peace and war. Intensely nostalgic and emotionally rich, it entertains and rips the heart-strings. Through the lens of traditional, rural life we follow the colourful and charming stories of people as they move from exuberance and touching naivety to a profound and devastating loss of innocence. Performed by a charismatic cast of actor-musicians – you’ll soon come to see why multi-award winning Northern Broadsides are recognised by audiences and critics alike as one of the finest national touring companies in the land.

The Memory of Water by Shelagh Stephenson directed by Nikolai Foster This big-hearted, bittersweet play brilliantly mixes hilarity and regret in a moving look at families and childhood memory. It was the winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in 2000 and voted UK Play of the Year in 2001. Bossy big-sister Teresa, over-achieving Mary, and attention-seeking Catherine are three grown-up sisters with a history of not getting on. When they gather at the family home on the Yorkshire coast, it’s not long before a storm is brewing. It’s a funny, angry and awkward re-union haunted by their glamourous mother. Childhood conflicts re-emerge, memories collide, and the secrets of their separate lives are finally revealed. “a superb mix of wild humour and bruising emotion” The Daily Telegraph

The three cast members effortlessly transform into a vast array of characters – including teachers, dinner ladies, students, an obstructive caretaker and of course, the school bully – in this contemporary classic. “ten out of ten” The Independent

HOW TO BE ImmOrTAL

Original direction by Anthony Hopkins Starring Bob Kingdom as Dylan Thomas

A first New Vic visit for the company specialising in the true stories of forgotten people.

Dylan Thomas was born in Wales in 1914 and died in New York in 1953. Towards the end of his life he toured America performing his works for sell-out audiences across the country.

Henrietta Lacks died in West Virginia in 1951, but her cells are still alive, dividing endlessly in laboratories all over the world. It’s taken Deborah years to come to terms with her mother’s death. Now she’s got to deal with her immortality. Love, death, and DNA intertwine in three twisted true tales about what we leave behind. There’s live music on cello, squeezebox and ukulele, 1950s science, nano-puppetry, and a song composed from human DNA coding. £18.00 / £19.50 / cons / Under 16s Go Free Created in association with The Lowry, West Yorkshire Playhouse, The Albany, Jackson’s Lane and Harrogate Theatre and assisted by The Wellcome Trust and UCL scientists.

A Bridge Over Troubled Water New Vic Borderlines is heading to Japan to share a storytelling project with people affected by the 2011 tsunami. A partnership project between New Vic Borderlines, Keele University, the Arts and Humanities research Council, Brunel University and the Open University, Bridging the Gap looks at real life issues facing different communities. The project launched at a creative conference held at the New Vic in June when people from across North Staffordshire stepped forward to share, with audiences from across the UK and leaders in enterprise from across Europe, stories of how they have been affected by the decline of the steel, pottery and coal industries. Together, they

shared their hopes for the future and how they are regenerating their communities. Work created at the New Vic was then showcased at a conference in Edinburgh. We hope through this project people will be able to empathise with each other and learn from each others’ experiences.”
