Artistic Director comments

Get behind the Bid A

s one of the country’s leading producing theatres the New Vic is in an enviable position. We get to make theatre for our area Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire, continuing the tradition of our creative county: one that’s reached out beyond local communities to touch the nation and the world through its craft and creativity. So we’re thrilled to be able to play our part in the Stoke-on-Trent bid to be UK City of Culture. Liverpool’s year in the spotlight as European Capital of Culture 2008 generated a huge increase in tourism and in cultural engagement alongside

a business boom. And it transformed perceptions of the place: the nation began to notice that Liverpool had become a contemporary, multi-faceted city with a vibrant cultural life. The UK City of Culture Programme was created to unlock those benefits in other areas of the country. In 2013 Derry/Londonderry enjoyed the opportunity; in 2017 it will be Hull, who are inviting ‘Everyone Back to Ours’ for a furiously exciting programme of events alongside massive regeneration of the public realm. In 2021, could it be Stoke-on-Trent? Winning the title would mean a celebration of culture, including a cultural programme across many art forms, spaces, communities and platforms, delivered right here on our doorstep, driven by local people, artists and organisations. It would bring serious social and economic benefits which could be worth £60million in City of Culture year alone – never mind the benefits in subsequent years. It would mean a million tourist visits, raised awareness of us across the nation, and a confident new spring in our step as we share this amazing place with friends old and new.

My opposite number at our partner theatre Hull Truck, Artistic Director Mark Babych, was one of the team who put together Hull’s successful bid. I asked him: what does it means for Hull? “This is a city coming out of the shadows and taking its rightful place in the UK as one of the great Cities of the North,” he told me: “UK City of Culture has fast-tracked a change in perception, and is helping to build the infrastructure needed to make Hull a better place to live, study, work, visit – in essence, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to drive real change through arts and culture. Even before its year in the spotlight, we can already start to see the effects - the Rough Guide cites Hull as one of the top ten cities in the world to visit; and the city has finally achieved a permanent role on the BBC’s weather map, ensuring that everyone will know precisely where it is! And there’s no doubt that success would resonate beyond the city right across our county – building on groundbreaking initiatives such as our Appetite programme and the annual Homecoming street festival in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Sara Williams,

who’s CEO of Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce, is clear about how wide the impact could be: “There is a vibrant cultural life here which is crucial to attracting and keeping the talent that we need in our workforce. Businesses thrive on increased confidence and the title of city of culture will put our confidence level even higher and reinforce the strong sense of identity, loyalty and belonging that every chamber member – and most businesses – have for Staffordshire.” So, please Get Behind The Bid. Share your thoughts and ideas via info@sot2021.com. Keep an eye on the website www.sot2021.com for details of how you can help; and tell people why it’s important. As a spokesperson said to me when I asked why we should embark on a bid: “Bottom line, we’re incredibly proud of our past, and want to create an equally impressive future.” Now that’s what I call something to aim for.

Best foot forward Choreographer Bev Edmunds on helping us find our dancing feet‌ Photos: David Hughes

Spring 17 Mag.indd 6

10/25/2016 3:35:25 PM

“Spin and spin and spin and spin!” Choreographer Bev Edmunds is fizzing with energy, dressed in her gym gear and bouncing from one foot to the other. Her mind is ten steps ahead of everyone else in the room as she puts a 24-strong Young Company of talented local schoolchildren through their paces in the first dance rehearsal for The Snow Queen. “Set yourself a spot and go for it!” If you’ve ever found yourself tapping your toes along with a perfectly-honed routine on the New Vic’s stage it’s more than likely that Bev was the mastermind behind it. The pint-sized Liverpudlian has now been involved with the theatre-in-the-round for nearly 20 years. “The first show I did at the New Vic was A Christmas Carol in 1998; my daughter, Abby, was two when I first started working here, she’s now 21! It’s been such a big part of our lives.” Today’s session is the first time Bev has seen the Young Company since Summer School and is a chance to get a head start on several routines before the professional actors begin rehearsals in a few weeks. “We’re going to start with a warm up and then we’ll be exploring being snowflakes. Hopefully we’ll be able to piece one of the routines together tonight. Theresa (Heskins) works with our composer, James Atherton, to write the songs and then I work in the

rehearsal room with the actors and Young Company to give their ideas a shape,” Bev explains, introducing her assistant, Marissa, a champion Latin ballroom dancer and graduate of Bev’s own dance school, Dolphin Dance Studios in Liverpool. “I’m going to work with one team at a time. You’re going to run on, keep going, and you’re going to stop here,” she tells the group, pointing out her directions. Like many of the children she’s now teaching, Bev started dancing at a young age. After graduating from a performing arts college she toured extensively as a dancer – she even performed alongside Michael Caine in festive favourite The Muppet Christmas Carol – before moving into the world of choreography. What started as a one-off job quickly became a successful career, with Bev’s skills in demand the length and breadth of the country. Recent highlights have included a project with the Disney Channel and a new programme for CBeebies. “I’d love to choreograph an epic film,” she tells us, but adds: “Saying that, working with Theresa at the New Vic is like doing a film 7 | www.newvictheatre.org.uk

Spring 17 Mag.indd 7

10/25/2016 3:35:27 PM

as her productions are all just so full of amazing things - it’s non-stop action!” When asked what her New Vic highlights are, Bev’s got an extensive back catalogue to choose from having now worked on more than 30 shows. “Do you know what? There have been so many lovely shows here that if I listed them all I’d be here for a week,” she says: “Well, Around the World in Eighty Days, obviously, because that’s just a fantastic show to work on. Peter Pan in Scarlet, again, that was great for me as it was full of choreography. “If I go back a long time ago, Sweeney Todd too. Moll Flanders, I think was my second show here, for Gwenda Hughes. “Kiss Me Quickstep, was a great show, especially as we got to take it to Eastbourne in the summer. This year I’ve been particularly blessed, Theresa has been fabulous, giving me all these different types of dances - ballroom, Latin and 1920s and 1930s jazz. It’s been excellent.” Bev adds: “Working in-the-round is an extra challenge but I feel it gives me more freedom. I can be much more creative devising routines for this space.” Back in the rehearsal room the Young Company is getting the hang of it. “The children who join us for the Summer School and then become part of the Young Company are so talented,” Bev

Spring 17 Mag.indd 8

10/25/2016 3:35:30 PM

says proudly: “They get better and better each year which means we can make the routines more complex which makes for an exciting show.” And can she give anything away about what she’s got up her sleeve for The Snow Queen? “We’ve got to keep some secrets! Obviously its set in a snowy landscape so there’s lots of skating which is a lot of fun to work on. It’s going to be a really beautiful show… you’ll have to wait and see!” Smiling, she concludes: “The New Vic really is one of my favourite places, it just feels lovely to come to and work here. It’s my second home, it’s my family.” The Snow Queen runs from Sat 19 Nov to Sat 28 Jan

Beryl Burton. MBE, OBE, five times World Pursuit Champion, 13 times National Pursuit Champion and twice World Road Race Champion. The winner of an astonishing 93 titles. The greatest woman on two wheels, yet largely forgotten until BAFTA nominated Maxine Peake discovered and shone the spotlight on her story. Talking to us between performances of A Streetcar Named Desire at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre, Maxine tells us she can’t wait to share the story of the unsung sporting heroine with North Staffordshire audiences. Originally written for Radio 4 in 2012, Beryl was adapted for the stage by the West Yorkshire Playhouse to coincide with the start of the Tour de France in Leeds before touring. A brand new production is now set to take centrestage at the New Vic in March. Maxine, star of Shameless, Silk and Dinnerladies, explains how she first discovered Beryl’s story: “My boyfriend Pawlo bought me a copy of Beryl’s autobiography ‘Personal Best’ for a birthday present with a note that said ‘get yourself a curly perm - there’s a film in this for you’. “We both enjoy cycling and he’d come across the book while buying some parts for his bike on the internet. Neither of us had heard of Beryl before. I read the book and was shocked that I hadn’t heard of this extraordinary woman.

I mentioned it to a radio producer I was working with at the time and she suggested I should try and write it. So I did!” It’s been an ‘extraordinary journey’, she adds: “I’m so pleased that more people have now heard of Beryl but what I was surprised about was how revered she still is in cycling circles. I think also it was an opportunity for people who knew her or knew of her to celebrate her and her incredible achievements.” Clearly bitten by the writing bug, Maxine says she would like to do more in the future. “I’ve always wanted to write and initially when I couldn’t get into drama school I thought that maybe was the path to take. I really enjoy it and hope to do more but I’ve still a long way to go.” She adds: “I originally had an idea of writing a series of stories for radio about ordinary women with extraordinary lives. I had one produced about the wonderful Anne Scargill when she and three other women occupied Parkside Colliery for four nights in 1993. It was called Queens of The Coal Age and starred Julie Hesmondalgh and Lorraine Cheshire. “I would like to do more; there are so many exceptional women past and present with stories that need to be told.” Beryl runs from Fri 3 to Sat 18 March. 11 | www.newvictheatre.org.uk

Just by way of a change, Eric needs money. So, he’s organising a Christmas Party at the local community centre with him as DJ and host. Money from the ticket sales and a good chance of copping-off for Christmas. What could go wrong? Well, the five people who have bought tickets are all a little ‘odd’ – Dorothy, Evelyn Toto (a friend of Dorothy’s), the very timid Miss Lyons, the heartless Terry Inman (T. Inman – got it yet?) and the rather dim Steve Crowe make it the weirdest Christmas party you will ever attend! But, they still manage to provide a laugh a minute – and perform 20 of the greatest 60s hits.

Maxine Peake’s critically acclaimed first play - a warm and witty celebration of the life of unsung sporting legend Beryl Burton. A working class mum from Leeds, she cycled her way into the record books, becoming the greatest ever woman on two wheels. But her remarkable story was, largely, forgotten – until now! Nobody expects young Beryl Charnock to amount to much. She never makes it to grammar school and, after a serious illness, is told to avoid exercise. Then she meets keen young cyclist, Charlie Burton, and finds herself smitten – not only with Charlie, but with the thrill and freedom she finds on her bike. With husband and daughter at her side, the determined Beryl defies the world, embarking on a journey that leads to true sporting greatness. She dominates cycling throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s, becoming five-time world champion and best British all-rounder for 25 consecutive years. And still makes it home in time for dinner!

The Blues Band What’s left to say about the Blues Band? 38 years on the road and still playing the finest Rhythm & Blues you’ll ever hear – and that’s a fact! Their New Vic visits always sell-out so make sure to book soon! In 1979, Paul Jones, Tom McGuinness, Dave Kelly, Rob Townsend and Gary Fletcher decided to form a band ‘just to play the blues’. 38 years on, they’re still packing out gigs and recording. But, having played with some of the great bands of the 60 and 70s – the likes of Manfred Mann, McGuinness Flint, Medicine Head and Family – I guess we shouldn’t be too surprised. £21.00 / £23.50 / £25.50

The Tempest On a crazy island swirling with sounds, exiled Duke Prospero uses magic to create a home within the wilderness. As his beloved daughter Miranda falls in love with a shipwrecked stranger from their homeland, she rebels against his power. Prospero must risk forgiving those who betrayed him, or lose her forever. Fun, fantasy and sorcery collide in this gripping story of how love and reconciliation can conquer fear and control. This new production from the RSC is an ideal first experience of Shakespeare for anyone aged 8 and above. Using Shakespeare’s original language, this edited version lasts 90 minutes and includes a fully interactive introduction to the world of the play. £13.50 / £9.00

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Staffordshire has championed the New Vic for delivering ‘life-saving’ work following the launch of a powerful Borderlines drama. Supported by the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Proceeds of Crime Fund, the New Vic Borderlines’ Message Not Delivered project launched to an audience of frontline professionals at the New Vic in September before touring schools across Staffordshire. The hard-hitting documentary-drama, developed in collaboration with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, Staffordshire Police and the Newcastle Partnership, highlights the dangers of being distracted by mobile phones while driving. Matthew Ellis, Staffordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “The Proceeds of Crime Fund is taking criminals’ ill-gotten gains and putting them directly back into communities through projects that make a real difference. That’s why I’m delighted to support this production and its life-saving message for young drivers.” The drama uses the real voices of professionals from Staffordshire’s Ambulance, Fire and Police Services as well as family and friends of those involved in road traffic collisions. Following performances, students

were given the chance to participate in workshops and interact with scenes, identifying changes that could be made by the characters. Message Not Delivered is the third New Vic Borderlines project to be funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Office. In August, Borderlines collaborated on the SPACE scheme working with teenagers on issues surrounding bullying and stereotypes. Love Hurts? explored abusive relationships and toured to schools across the county. Susan Moffat, Director of New Vic Borderlines, said: “Borderlines works in response to issues communities identify; having the support of the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Proceeds of Crime Fund ensures communities which have suffered as a result of crime can have their voices heard in a positive way through our work. “Through these projects we have developed partnerships with frontline professionals who make a powerful difference and have genuine first-hand knowledge of the issues we are addressing, such as domestic violence, violence among young people and most recently, distraction while driving. “Working with the support of the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Office enables us to take our work around the county and make sure important messages are heard.” 35 | www.newvictheatre.org.uk

Universal appeal The New Vic and its ongoing relationship with Keele University...

Spring 17 Mag.indd 36

10/25/2016 3:36:31 PM

Keele University Post Graduates fill the auditorium. A busy day lies ahead. First up, a tour with New Vic Artistic Director Theresa Heskins followed by workshops on ‘what makes a good manager’ led by theatre practitioners. The students are at the New Vic ahead of starting courses at Keele Management School, with the day’s activities forming part of a wider relationship between the theatre and the university. A key example of this relationship is Ages and Stages, a continuing research collaboration between New Vic Education and Keele University which encourages adults of all ages to enjoy drama and creative work. Since launching in 2009 Ages and Stages has looked at the impact of theatre on ideas about, and the experience of, ageing. The project has established an intergenerational theatre company which recently toured a piece of drama to schools and residential centres across Staffordshire. Ages and Stages members regularly work with other groups, such as the New Vic’s own Youth Theatre and Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre’s Company of Elders. New Vic Education also has a continuing relationship with the university’s medical school. Over the past few years, third year medical students have worked alongside

New Vic practitioners in a series of workshops using drama and creative writing to develop empathy skills improving approaches to patient care and discovering how to educate the community on wider health issues. New Vic Borderlines meanwhile has been working alongside Keele’s Management School for a number of years, partnering on projects which have changed lives worldwide and prompting the launch of a major international research centre at the university. Born out of the relationship between Borderlines and Keele Management School, the Community Animation and Social Innovation Centre (CASIC) launched in 2015 to facilitate the development of new and more creative dialogues between academia and the community. Topics such as volunteering, aging, violence, exclusion and communities in crisis have already been explored by CASIC within multiple settings in the UK, Canada, Japan, Sweden, Greece and Poland. And the relationship continues, with Keele University being the key sponsor in bringing the RSC’s First Encounter production of The Tempest to North Staffordshire. See page 32 for details.

A

taste of the

xtraordinary!

A giant spectacle in the sky, wild marching bands, circus cabaret and pop up theatre-in-the-round. From the absurd to the outrageous, to the moving and thought-provoking, Appetite’s summer programme brought a host of world-class arts events for all the family to the streets of Stoke-on-Trent. The summer kicked off with the mesmerising The Enchanted Chandelier by French company, Transe Express. Taking over Central Forest Park, the show saw a vast chandelier suspended 50m above the ground lift skywards to fly trapeze artists, bell ringers, singers, percussionists and acrobats through the night. The Big Feast then took over Hanley for August Bank Holiday weekend with a host of unmissable events and street shows, from Upswing’s cutting edge Circus Remixed and the Always Drinking Marching Band to superhero inspired dance. The fun didn’t stop when the sun went down when for the first time Appetite took over the Victoria Hall with The Big Feast Cabaret Nights. Events included the premiere of locally developed French inspired cabaret night Ou La

Spring 17 Mag.indd 38

La by Lucie Labadie and Camp by BBC Radio 4 host Scottee. And rounding off the programme, Paines Plough made a welcome return to the city with Roundabout, a pop-up plug-in theatre-in-the-round with three brand new shows direct from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Karl Greenwood, Appetite Project Director, said: “Seeing the wonder and awe on peoples’ faces as The Enchanted Chandelier rose into the sky is something I’ll always remember. “We also added a bit more spice to the Big Feast this year, adding The Big Feast Cabaret Nights at Victoria Hall which offered our audience something a little bit different and were a lot of fun. “We were delighted that Roundabout returned to the city in October. It’s so powerful for us to see writing of such quality performing in a small intimate popup theatre in the centre of Hanley with such a diverse audience enjoying this. As a programme, we are here to experiment and continue to find new ways surprise our audiences with world-class entertainment. We’re looking forward to planning for 2017.”
