Artistic Director comments collaborating with other theatres including the Royal Exchange, the National Theatre Studio and the RSC. It’s been an invigorating way to work. Being so connected with other organisations and their art keeps us buzzing creatively; audiences here get to enjoy a broader range of work; we stay right up to date with current trends…and it’s a very enjoyable way to make theatre.

The New Vic is distinctive for many things, not least of which is the sheer amount of home-grown work we create. Whereas other theatres like us might produce only three of their own shows a year, here it’s more like seven or even eight. As a result, we maintain a full complement of craft and production departments, providing local artists, technicians, makers and facilitators with a place to pursue their craft. And the work we make together is always planned with local audiences in mind. But it’s our ambition to be a national theatre as well as a local one. We want the rest of the country to know that creativity and excellence thrive in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire, an area with a great present and an even brighter future. So over recent years we’ve striven to be more connected with the nation’s theatre ecology. That’s involved taking our work further afield; bringing work from other theatres to the New Vic; and

So this season I’m thrilled that, as well as a season of three plays staged just for the New Vic by director Abbey Wright, we’ll be making productions with a whole range of friends both old and new. With Oldham Coliseum we’ll make Our Gracie; Bolton Octagon and Salisbury Playhouse are our partners on Singin’ in the Rain; and we’ll join forces with Oxford Playhouse to make Peter Pan in Scarlet, the official sequel to Peter Pan commissioned by Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. The New Vic’s festive show is the highlight of my year, and it’s going to be such a huge treat to make something similar but summery. As at Christmas, it will appeal to children, to families of all ages, and adults who want to come without finding the excuse of children to bring, so please come along and let us know whether this is something you’d like to see more of.

Abbey Wright who will be directing Diana of Dobson’s, Talent and The Mountaintop in this season.

The motel maid comes to visit him and events take a really surprising turn. This is a poetic, funny, heart-stopping play which won the Olivier Award for Best New Play. It lets us see Dr King as a real man: flawed, unwilling, flirtatious, witty, and full of faith.” Abbey’s love for what she does stems from early childhood. “When I was small I talked non-stop. I was an only child and I read all the time,” she recalls: “My dad used to tell me stories as I grew up and I started to act and sing. My mum worked in the RSC education department and used to get free tickets. We went to see everything. I remember going to see so many shows — they were magical nights.” After studying English at university, Abbey

returned home and became a director of a youth theatre programme. From there she went to East 15 Acting School.   “I think I’d already caught the bug for directing,” she says: “At the end of the course I asked if I could just write and direct for my final project which I did. I loved it, personally I found it to be more creative than acting. Directing became more thrilling for me, to bring everything together and work with all theatre departments to make stories.” She laughs, adding: “I wasn’t that good at acting anyway.” Abbey has since enjoyed a fantastic career, assisting some of the most respected directors of contemporary theatre as well as directing her own productions at prestigious venues, such as the National Theatre, Arcola Theatre, the Bush Theatre and Donmar Warehouse, where she was

When asked what she took from each experience she takes a moment to ponder. “You learn little tricks but you can’t copy anyone as it just doesn’t work like that,” she sums up: “When you’re having a bad day you

In the midst of all the above Abbey also found time to launch her own theatre company, tackroom, to create rich programmes of new work from the UK and beyond. “I wanted to have the flexibility to make work that felt very current and to be able to take risks,” she explains: “It has helped me to develop as a director and to do more experimental work.” The overarching impression you get from even the briefest of conversations with Abbey is that she is constantly striving to keep learning, developing and getting bolder with what she does.

“Alan Rickman was incredibly rigorous, Michael Grandage is a fantastic mentor. And, Danny Boyle has such an amazing work ethic” do remember such and such and get a lift thinking, ‘oh, I’ll try that now’. Alan Rickman was incredibly rigorous, actors really responded to his intensity and Michael Grandage is a consummate director and has been my friend and mentor throughout my career. And, on Frankenstein at the National Theatre, Danny Boyle had such an amazing work ethic. He was at rehearsals really early every day and was always reading the script developing new ideas.

“My highlights are always about the work,” she concludes as I get ready to leave: “My ambition is to keep going, carry on doing what I’m doing, and learning along the way.” Now, it’s time to get back to casting while digesting design ideas aplenty. And of course, there’s Gwynnie the dog, still barking and ready for a walk. Diana of Dobson’s opens on Friday 29 April

ictoria Wood’s glittering career spans four decades. She’s won multiple BAFTAs, been awarded a CBE, has been named ‘funniest comic of all time’ in countless polls and sold out the Royal Albert Hall for 15 straight nights. Loved for her warmth and gift for gags, much of her humour is grounded in everyday life and its peculiarities. Her talents are broad – sell-out stand-up comic, actor, singer/songwriter, director, playwright and screenwriter. The list goes on and on.

So, suggesting that it’s going to be a challenge to find someone with the comic and musical gifts to step into the shoes of Victoria Wood for our production of Talent, is something of an understatement. Her first play, she wrote it aged just 25 in 1978. Centering on two friends, one of whom is about to enter a talent contest in a run-down nightclub, it was commissioned for the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, and received much acclaim before transferring to London. The same year, it hit the small screen in an ITV adaptation starring Victoria herself alongside friend Julie Walters. As a winner of New Faces in 1973, Victoria drew on her own experiences of talent shows and the variety circuit for her subject. Maureen, the downtrodden friend of contestant Julie, in fact shares some qualities with Victoria’s younger self. Julie

meanwhile is based on a girl Victoria met at a talent contest who was so nervous that she chatted continuously. “There are certainly bits of me in there,” Victoria says: “I knew what it was like to feel out of the loop. I only got on New Faces because I knew somebody who worked in the make-up department so she put my form to the top of the pile. I wouldn’t have been seen otherwise; I’d have been right at the back of the queue. “It was open to anyone, from professionals to amateurs. It was a place to let the public see your act and then move on from playing in clubs or singing in the bath. “It was quite an odd start, I was still at university doing local telly and then I did New Faces. I didn’t win more than my heat but I got picked to be on a spin-off called The Summer Show – it felt like a bit of an affirmation to be on a proper telly show!” Tellingly, she adds: “In Talent, I put a lot of my own feelings of being uncomfortable in this world into Maureen and my excitement and wonder about being in show business into Julie.” And, maybe, that’s the reason the country has taken Victoria to its heart so much – the vulnerable, shy, awkward and ordinary character blinking her way in the limelight, surprised and delighted to be there. Talent opens on Friday 20 May

The New Vic production of Peter Pan

adventure...

Around the World in Eighty Days was a big hit with families.

N

ew Vic Christmas shows have become something of a legend. They’re seen by more than 40,000 people every year and, for many families, have become as much a part of their Christmas as decorating the tree. And, since the success of Around the World in Eighty Days, we’ve been on the lookout for other family shows for other times of the year. That’s why we were delighted when Oxford Playhouse asked our Artistic Director, Theresa Heskins, to adapt Peter Pan in Scarlet, the offical sequel to Peter Pan, for the stage – and to direct our joint production. Not only does it mean we have a wonderful family show this summer, it just goes to show how news of the work we’re doing here at the New Vic is spreading around the country. Peter Pan in Scarlet was written by threetime Whitbread Children’s Book Award winner, Geraldine McCaughrean, who beat off 200 other authors to win an international competition organised by Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.

As Peter Pan in Scarlet hits both our stage and Oxford Playhouse’s this summer, we explain why we decided to embark on this exciting return to Neverland. . . 12 | www.newvictheatre.org.uk Summer16 Mag (proof).indd 12-13

Theresa Heskins’ adaptation uses her trademark all-action style in a show that is filled with action and adventure, and sprinkled with fairy dust. It has an original musical score by the brilliant Christmas show regular, James Atherton; and stunning aerial sequences choreographed by Vicki Amedume, who has worked on New Vic shows such as Dracula, Peter Pan and The Wicked Lady.

Pre-show, family events* For Peter Pan in Scarlet and for the first time, the New Vic’s Education team is offering pre-show family events to help you get more out of your New Vic visit. Events are arranged so that you have plenty of time to get something to eat and drink before the show. Pre-show family tour: a 40-minute backstage tour, led by one of our Education team, giving an insight into the ways we create work for the stage. Pre-show family talk: a 30-minute introduction to the show with a member of our Education team and people involved in the production. * see page 29 for prices and the calendar on page 51 for times.

Peter Pan in Scarlet opens on Sat 23 July

A New Vic Theatre and Oldham Coliseum Theatre production

A new play by Philip Goulding Directed by Kevin Shaw Weds 6 – Sat 23 April Filled with music and infectious, down-to-earth humour, a celebration of the remarkable life of Gracie Fields. Using her own words, this warm, funny and moving portrait is by the writer of A Fine Bright Day Today, one of the most popular New Vic productions of recent years. Gracie Fields’ vibrant personality and rich, warm singing style took her from a room above a Rochdale chip shop to international fame and fortune. Her musical recordings sold in the millions and she became one of the highest paid female movie stars in the world. So great was her appeal that her war-time work boosting morale saw Hitler declare her an enemy of the Third Reich! A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear, in her own words – and some very famous songs – the real-life Cinderella story of a working-class lass who became Britain’s greatest female entertainer.

A New Vic Theatre production

By Victoria Wood Directed by Abbey Wright Fri 20 May – Sat 4 June Victoria Wood has won more BAFTAs than anyone in history, along with awards for stand-up, drama and light entertainment. A comedy with original songs, Talent is the 1978 play that made her name, winning the Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright and earning her first BAFTA nomination. It’s talent night at Bunters Nitespot and secretary Julie is making her bid for fame and fortune. With frumpy best friend Maureen in tow, she’s plunged into the backstage world of ukelele-wielding pensioners, hapless magicians and predatory comperes with wandering hands and white Cortinas. Julie is desperate for success and a new life; Maureen just wishes she was 14 again. But, when a face from the past turns up and some painful memories are unearthed, they’re forced to ask, what’s the point of success? And what does it really mean to have talent?

colleagues, family and club friends, I have completed three half marathons and am training for my first marathon in April. I love running with other people and sharing our running achievements.

As Stoke-on-Trent gets into its stride as European City of Sport, the New Vic’s very own athletes tell their sporting stories… Meet Martin Hayward, Peter Morgan, Sarah Thorne, Mike Unwin, James Earls-Davis and James Atherton. Just some of the New Vic staff and freelance creatives who pound the pavements of North Staffordshire – even on their lunchbreaks! Peter Morgan, Deputy Chief Electrician: I initially started running to help me lose some weight and I joined my local Parkrun in Hanley Park. I really enjoyed seeing my times get faster, and my waistline getting smaller. Having fellow runners at the New Vic helped keep me motivated. Stoke becoming the European City of

Sport may surprise some people, but over the last few years I’ve seen more and more people helping each other to get fit, running and cycling around the streets and canals, and getting more involved in various sports. There’s a real sense of community around those who get involved. It’s a great thing to happen to the area. Sarah Thorne, Deputy Costume Supervisor: I started running two years ago. I felt very lazy as I watched my work colleagues heading off for a lunchtime run but I needed to try to run on my own first as I was so embarrassed at not being able to get to the end of the street! Now I regularly do Parkrun with my work

Martin Hayward, Administration Officer: Running is a good way of meeting likeminded folk and it’s a regular topic of conversation at the theatre. It’s good to get out in the fresh air, get some sunshine and has really helped me know my local area better. Last week, on a drizzly day running along the Caldon Canal, I saw two kingfishers. That cheered me up! I’ve been lucky enough to run the New York and Paris Marathons, and the Potteries Marathon when it came back last year. The Potters Half and full marathon get such amazing support. I would recommend them to anyone, although it’s true – the full marathon is tough! When I go out running at weekends, I’m amazed at how many people are playing sport, I come across football matches – lower leagues and children’s teams, rugby and cricket training and matches, not to mention all the other runners. Mike Unwin, Maintenance Technician: I’ve been running for seven years now, I hadn’t run since 1966 when I was at school. One day, Louise and Denise from the New Vic’s Workshop team asked me ‘why don’t you come out for a run with us at lunch?’ I ran a

couple of miles and it started from there. I’ve run around 100 races now. I’ve done the Blackpool Marathon, Congleton, Buxton, Leek and Potters Half Marathons and loads of 10km races. This year I’ve entered the Potteries Marathon. I do Parkrun too – if I go tomorrow I’ll have done 94! It’s great, it’s free and you just have to sign up online. People come from all over the area to take part. James Earls-Davis, Head of Technical/ Sound Designer: I have been running on and off since I was 16, I did cross country at school. I have done the Potteries Marathon several times and the London Marathon as well as a lot of half marathons and 10kms. I’ve done a half Ironman too – a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike ride and a 13.1 mile run – and I’ve done several Olympic distance triathlons. I join Parkrun a lot and it’s fantastic for anyone who has thought about getting into running but is a bit unsure, it’s completely non-judgemental. Stuck for ideas, I’ll often go out running in my lunch break—it’s when I’ve had some of my best ideas. For more information on the European City of Sport 2016 programme, visit www.stoke.gov.uk/ccm/navigation/ leisure/european-city-of-sport-2016. I join Parkrun a lot and it’s fantastic for anyone who has thought about getting into running but is a bit unsure, it’s completely non-judgemental. Stuck for ideas, I’ll often go out running in my lunch break—it’s when I’ve had some of my best ideas. Second helpings Over the past three years our ambitious Appetite programme has been delivering spectacular and unexpected art to the parks, shopping centres, hospitals and streets of Stoke-on-Trent, thrilling new audiences throughout the city. Last November we were delighted to learn that we had been successful in achieving a further £1 million Arts Council England investment to continue the programme for a further three years. Led by the New Vic, we’ll be working with Partners in Creative Learning, Staffordshire University and 6 Towns Radio. This next chapter will see Appetite build on its success, animating the city with unforgettable art experiences and challenging even more people to get excited about what the arts can offer. Since 2013, Appetite has worked closely 38 | www.newvictheatre.org.uk Summer16 Mag (proof).indd 38-39

with many of the city’s community groups, supporting them to infuse something a little different into their local events. This next phase will see Appetite continue to support the groups’ ambitious future plans through one-to-one mentoring, as well as co-producing a programme of unmissable city-wide events with Supper Club, a monthly gathering of enthusiastic and committed community members. So what sweet treats will be making 2016 sizzle? August will see the return of the acclaimed Big Feast to the city Centre, Hanley, with a sensational opening show, a city-wide Taster Tour and a three-day festival of riveting street performance. On 20 - 23 October ‘pop up’ theatre-inthe-round, Roundabout, by the celebrated Paines Plough, will be springing back up in Hanley for three days of outstanding new plays from the nation’s most exciting,

upcoming writers, together with a programme of local entertainment and events. To round the year off in spectacular style, Appetite will be looking to team up again with Stoke-on-Trent City Council to switch on the Christmas Lights with an artistic bang. Karl Greenwood, Appetite Project Director, says: ‘Over the past three years we’ve begun to see a real change in people’s attitudes to regularly attending arts events. We are looking forward to continuing to work with local people, groups and partners to bring another three years of world class experiences to the city, ensuring even more people are inspired to engage with cultural activity.’ Make sure you never miss a thing by visiting www.appetitestoke.co.uk and signing up to the Appetite mailing list.
