Why we do what we do We are unique. The New Vic was the first purpose-built theatre-in-the-round in the whole of Europe. We believe in the power of theatre to change lives. Everyone should have access to great theatre. We combine the work we do on stage with a community and education programme that is ground-breaking. As a thriving charity, we want our theatre to have an impact on the lives our audiences lead – however they engage with us. Each year, we welcome more than 150,000 people through our doors to see shows on our stage, or take part in one of the many workshops and projects we run all year-round. We want the widest possible audience, from our local area and beyond, at all ages and at all stages in their lives to experience the arts and feel welcome at the New Vic, and we work hard to create high quality, inspiring theatre that tells stories our audiences can connect with.

As a director, it’s a very special moment when you first introduce an audience to the production you’ve been working on. Whilst it is a mix of jangling nerves and excitement, all bound up together, the first time you see an audience react to the story you’ve been creating in rehearsals is thrilling. Here, at the New Vic, what makes that moment even more vivid is that the audience are sitting right opposite you, reacting to the action, just as you are. This very special way of making theatre is pretty rare the world over. We were the first purpose-built theatre-in-the-round in Europe. How exciting it is to know that here, from Newcastle-under-Lyme, we helped influence the face of our industry. What’s been great most recently is discovering more and more colleagues across Europe and further afield who champion work in-the-round. Earlier this year I visited Chalons-en-Champagne to meet with the international network of theatres in-the-round. There are about forty of us making theatre in this format - in Sweden, Montreal, France, the UK, Portugal, Denmark, Croatia, Italy, the Netherlands and other countries. There is a UK network of theatres in-the-round, too, and we’ve been meeting and talking together over the past few years, discussing topics relevant to us and planning collaborations. I can’t tell you how happy I am to see three of those collaborations come to fruition this season: Manchester’s Royal Exchange, Bristol’s Tobacco Factory Theatres, and Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre are all theatres dedicated to theatre-in-the-round.

Mining a rich heritage Coal mining in North Staffordshire dates back a staggering 700 years, with the historic coalfield encompassing an area of nearly 100 square miles, almost exclusively located within the boundaries of Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire.

In 1874, 20,758 of the region’s population worked in the industry, with 33,000 employed at the end of the next decade. By the 20th Century, most manual workers in North Staffordshire, if not employed in pottery or iron and steel, were employed in mining. The industry has long been represented in New Vic Productions, with miners, mining communities and life at the coalfields taking centre-stage both at the old and New Vic Theatre. The theatre first worked alongside coal miners in the 1970s, with Jowl Jowl and Listen Lads!, made with miners from Trentham’s Hem Heath Colliery and thus began a longstanding relationship with the pit and coal mining community. In 1981, Miner Dig The Coal was a celebration of the working lives of the area’s miners. Hem Heath miners were so proud to see their stories on stage they were the very first to donate to the Vic Appeal, coming straight from their shift underground to personally hand over a cheque to support the fundraising effort to build Europe’s first purpose-built theatre-in-the-round. Despite the decline of the industry locally, the New Vic continued to tell the stories of miners, their families and their work –

Artistic Director Theresa Heskins’ very first production was The Glee Club by Richard Cameron and productions of DH Lawrence’s powerful family dramas, The Daughter-In-Law and The Widowing of Mrs Holroyd followed. More recently, Lee Hall’s The Pitmen Painters recounted how miners-turned-artists, The Ashington Group, took the art world by storm, while New Vic Borderlines’ community outreach work commemorated the centenary of Newcastle-under-Lyme’s Minnie Pit disaster which killed 155 men and boys. In 1993, Nice Girls told the story of three miners’ wives who occupied Trentham Colliery, and it’s the story of four ordinary women protesting the impending closure of a pit that comes to the fore once more in Maxine Peake’s new play, Queens of the Coal Age, on stage this September. A co-production with Royal Exchange, Manchester, this powerful play is based on real-life events at the Parkside Colliery in 1993. Maxine Peake, whose first play Beryl was staged by the New Vic last year, said: “I wrote Queens of the Coal Age because I wanted to shine a light on Anne, Lesley, Elaine and Dot’s determination and bravery, their ingenuity and passion. These four extraordinary women did something... they took direct action. I didn’t want their protest to be forgotten, I wanted to celebrate their efforts.

The production will be directed by Royal Exchange Associate Director Bryony Shanahan, who last worked with the New Vic on Around The World In Eighty Days in 2014. Born and bred in Stoke-on-Trent, Bryony said: “I’m completely thrilled to be coming back to the New Vic, and home, and I couldn’t be prouder that it’s with this piece. Based on real-life events, these women represent the importance of protest, the importance of having a voice and using it, especially in the face of what looks like immovable authority. “The effects of the mining strike and the subsequent pit closures are still being felt in our communities, and it is therefore vital that we don’t forget this brutal chapter, but that we continue the conversation, and celebrate the action of those who took a stand. And to be telling the story of the Parkside Occupation, from the women’s perspective, feels both exciting and necessary.” Queens of the Coal Age continues our tradition of telling these stories and shining a light on an industry that occupies an irreplaceable position in the industrial and social history of North Staffordshire and beyond. It’s not always about winning the struggle, but it’s about stemming the flow. We need to show we are still here. Beautiful Thing is a play that has charmed and delighted audiences across the world and inspired a cult film of the same name. Beautiful Thing offers a razor-sharp depiction of life and love on a post-war council estate, and a gloriously nostalgic trip back to the early nineties. This season look out for: MINERS: The Minnie Pit Disaster supported by Heritage Lottery Fund At 9.45am on 12 January 1918, the Minnie Pit in Halmer End exploded, bringing the usual Saturday morning rhythm of life in that community to a devastating halt. The tragedy prompted war poet Wilfred Owen, who was recovering from shell-shock, to write MINERS, a poem drawing a direct link between the men and boys fighting in the trenches and the ones working underground, bringing out coal for the war effort to literally ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’. Out of the 248 colliers who left home for work on that morning, only 93 returned to their families. 155 boys and men were killed. The Minnie Pit Disaster Centenary is the focus of our WW1 Heritage Lottery project, recognising the duel devastation of WW1 and the pit disaster on the local community, and bringing Wilfred Owen’s poem home to the communities it was written for. The project has started with some fantastic community events including a memorial walk, community fishing match and a memorial football match. Future events will create a range of opportunities for community members to deepen their knowledge of this heritage, participate in documentary writing workshops and perform in a community play about the disaster. The project will draw on local expertise including from Audley and District Family History Society and Apedale Heritage Centre. This project is open to all community members free of charge. New Vic Education Our Education Team provide creative learning for everyone - pre-school aged and upwards - through theatre-based opportunities and activities. With a wide range of Drama Clubs, Youth Theatre and Holiday Projects available, young people can enjoy opportunities to work with professionals to develop their personal skills, build confidence and have fun. School groups can take part in an extensive programme of cross-curricular workshops throughout the year, using drama as a means of learning for Key Stages 1, 2 and 3. As a Regional Theatre Partner for the RSC’s Associate Schools Programme, we introduce younger audiences to accessible versions of Shakespeare’s well-known works through First Encounters productions and offer workshops and performance opportunities to Primary schools. For older adults our Ages and Stages programme encourages people of all ages to participate in, and enjoy drama and creative work. Stoke-on-Trent train station is a 10-minute drive from the theatre, and has services connecting to Birmingham, Manchester, Derby, Stafford, Crewe and London. There is a taxi rank directly outside the train station entrance.

On busy performances where our car park is full, alternative parking is available on King Street Car Park, approx. a 5 minute walk from the theatre; charges apply. As we are located in a residential area, we kindly ask customers to park in the recommended car parks and not on adjacent KIDSGROVE J16
