// BASICSWALLET (@basicsproducts)

Exclusive interview by Joha Brown featuring JON RICHARDS & JACOB DURHAM How did you meet? Had you been friends before the creation of the company? We are actually cousins. It was a long chain of events that got us to this point, and it all started when we were just kids. We spent our summers on a lake in Montana. Between building traps to catch ground hogs, constructing forts, and even building a dance floor that we could pull behind a boat, our creativity led us to all kinds of shenanigans. It has been so fun to use this creativity to build a company and help people simplify their lives. How did you create the Basics Wallet brand and product? Tell us the story… It all started at a Utah Jazz basketball game. I don’t even remember who the Jazz played or if we won, but I remember our exciting conversation. By the end of that Jazz game, Jacob and I were determined to launch a project on Kickstarter together by the end of the summer. We started collaborating and trying to decide what would be our

6

first product. We both enjoy the idea of minimalism and were not completely satisfied with our current wallets, so we set out to make the perfect wallet. What we didn’t realize is that we would actually create a wallet that would make such an impact in others lives. Our customers loved it so much, sales began to boom and we had to quit our full time jobs to keep up. Hence… BASICS Products was born. What were the main obstacles met on your route to creating your product? Finding the right materials that would be flexible enough to allow for 4-14 cards but that would be strong enough for a good quality product. After over 8 months of testing, we found the perfect materials and are so happy with the products we have come up with.

MR DREAMZ MAGAZINE - 2015

Minimalist Pull-Tab Wallet «As long as you put in the time you can be successful. Social media plays a huge part in spreading the word about ideas and can be a great space to spend time learning what your customers want.»

Why is your brand so different from other wallets on the market? Our unique pull tab technology allows for easy access to your 4 most used cards. We have a competitive price, and people LOVE our wallets. They make great conversation starters. Is there a demand for your product abroad? What are your expansion plans? We are currently selling worldwide and have sold and shipped wallets to over 70 countries. We recently launched a notebook that has seen booming success. We plan to launch other products under the BASICS name that help people to simplify their lives and get back to the BASICS with style.

What is your advice / tips to others who want to create and market a product in 2015? Crowdfunding is a very unique platform that allows you to launch products into the market with very little risk. We use Kickstarter and have raised over half a million dollars in under one year. As long as you put in the time you can be successful. Social media plays a huge part in spreading the word about ideas and can be a great space to spend time learning what your customers want. Any final last inspiring words for our readers? Only you can «discover» you.

|#FITADDICT

MEGAN WILLIAMS x #FitForABelle Since the launch of your brand «Fit For A Belle», how has the feedback been? The feedback has been absolutely amazing since our launch! I look at the social media accounts and am still shocked to find so many women wearing their FFAB gear with pride and confidence. It wasn’t long ago that the brand was simply a mixture of a dream and ambition, and now it is a reality. I stay connected with my supporters as much as possible, so seeing their tags across social media and their constant love and support overwhelms me with emotion. Knowing I play such a part in helping women feel like the best versions of themselves brings me so much joy! Obviously, the name of your brand aims at helping women feel confident. Did fitness make you feel more confident? In other words, how did fitness change your life and your self-esteem? The thing about fitness, as with any lifestyle change, is that you have to start somewhere. People often forget, when buying my brand or following me on social media, that I haven’t always been this way.

10

My journey into fitness was not about having that “picture perfect body” or fitting into a particular size of clothes. It was about being able to look into the mirror and be proud of the woman staring back at me, which hasn’t always been the case. This change started with fitness but transformed into so much more! I found that living a healthier lifestyle and exercising began a full mind and body makeover. I finally had the energy to focus on my goals, to go out and experience life, and most importantly, to realize dreams (like FFAB!) that had been waiting for me all along. Do you think that wearing better looking fitwear gives a good mindset to view exercise as a «pleasure» or something positive? I absolutely believe that the clothes you wear can do a 180 on your mindset in regards to exercise. Some days exercise can fall toward the end of an already mile long to do list. Yet, it only takes the smallest change to alter your mindset and this change can most definitely be in the form of attire. I see clothing as an

IG & Twitter: @FitForABelle opportunity to express yourself, to reflect your mood and your motivation. No matter what type of exercise you’re into, feeling self-assured in your presentation can only help boost your motivation and encourage positive results. Without a doubt there is nothing more positive than a rockin outfit that makes you feel, well as Beyoncé says, “I’m feeling myself”. Why has women’s fashionable fitwear been such an afterthought for other big companies, and why is it so important for you? Although I cannot speak for the motivations of other companies, I know that my only motivation was to create items for women much like myself. My designs started when I asked myself a simple question that so many seem to fear, “What do I want?” My designs were just the answer to that. Bringing overwhelming support along the way by other women daring to ask the same question. Being dedicated to a healthy lifestyle doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice any ounce of fabulous. FFAB offers the ability to be a strong and embowered fashionista, because why blend in when you’re born to stand out! Who is the ‘FFAB typical girl’, or target audience? From the beginning, it was my mission to have no «typical FFAB girl.» We are all different women possessing a diverse set of goals, lifestyles, coming from all walks of life. The collective atmosphere we have created has been truly inspiring to witness. We strive to lead by example, inspiring and motivating any we meet. This doesn’t mean that we come without flaws, it means we aren’t afraid to be real and relatable with our followers, creating a state of “vulneraBELLEity”. Becoming transparent isn’t always easy, but invaluable to others experience similar struggles longing for the motivation to press forward. Someone new to the Fit For A Belle brand will find women ranging from years of experience but also women who are just now taking their first steps into this journey. I find this so incredible because we have created not only a clothing brand, but also a network where women can find motivation, inspiration, and engage with like-minded women, worldwide! Any girl who is an encourager, and possesses the desire to take their next step in their journey is definitely Fit For A Belle. What were the inspirations to design your new collection? In hindsight, my designs have reflected the journey of my brand as a whole. In the beginning, most of my designs were more graphic tee oriented. During this type of start up, the catchy graphics were “in;” therefore I guess you could say I was playing it safe. However, each design was/is carefully crafted through my creative heart, ones that do not lack in the glitz and glam department. Being a G.R.I.T. girl raised in the south, I mixed my down home roots with barbell moves.

For the re-launch, the emphasis has been on providing more styles, athletic fabrics, colors, and by popular demand: more sassy sayings! I’ve also incorporated items besides clothing such as protein shakers, bags, hair ties, ice packs, socks, and all things new and improved! The first year I concentrated on if there was a demand for Fit For A Belle. As a 25 year old with limited funds, that was key in moving forward with any future plans. touch of glitter & twang. The various styles provide versatility to the brand, perfect for whether you want to get your sweat on or just put your boots on. I’m always sure to have a FFAB notebook around for when inspiration strikes! Fortunately, followers turned into supporters, supporters turned into customers, customers turned into friends. They inspire me every day through their dedication and passion to always strive for better. What are the key innovations with FFAB items? The most key innovation, which also happens to double as my inspiration, is to create clothing that is cute, comfortable, and fashionable for women of all shapes and sizes. There are so many fitness apparel items that are catered to the “end result” (if there is such a thing) of a fitness journey. Most of my items, especially regarding the tanks, have a flowy and soft feel, giving girls a fashionable look with a comfortable not so skin tight fit! Uncomfortable fitness wear and apparel can go further than the surface based statement “It doesn’t fit.” It can steal your joy and send thoughts of self-insufficiency into a spiral out of control. By offering flattering and fashionable fitness clothing, women have the ability to feel equal at all stages of their journey. What additional information would you like readers to know about your brand? I want Fit For A Belle to be a place where every woman feels comfortable and accepted. I want them to know that this brand was born because I once stood in a place in my life when I did not feel these things. Whether someone is having trouble losing weight, gaining weight or reaching body goals, your mindset about personal self-image can be the most difficult journey of all. At Fit For A Belle we do not discriminate, every body is beautiful. I want girls to feel beautiful when they put my clothing on, but more so, I want them to feel encouraged. Encouraged to go for their dreams, to pursue a healthy lifestyle, and to love themselves. With my brand, an individual is not only gaining access to fashionable fit wear, but to a family of acceptance where it is 110% okay to be yourself and love the skin you’re in. This journey is too difficult alone, we all need that extra push towards the finish line where our goal is not only to cross it, but also to cross it together.

«I need upbeat music when I’m working out, songs that make you want to get up and get moving…and take on the world! Going to the gym is a different experience for everyone. My motto is find what works for you and stick to it.» 11

MR DREAMZ MAGAZINE - 2015

|#ONTOURNE! - EVAN BRINKMAN (@brinkmanevan) How do you manage your time between acting and school? I’m in the 8th grade and attend public school. I always make schoolwork my number one priority in the day. After I have completed my homework I will work on my auditions. I usually have 1-3 days to submit my video auditions so I rarely feel overwhelmed. If I am on the movie set then I have a tutor and usually do about 3 hours of homework a day. All my teachers have always been supportive and they send my assignments to the tutor. I always try to be efficient with my time. Do your schoolmates consider you as “different” because of your career? What has the feedback been so far? I don’t think my schoolmates consider me any different than them. Sometimes I will hear «aren’t you the kid in the movies» and then they tell me it is cool. My teachers are great and some affectionately call me the «movie star». Everything has been positive and I really don’t hear much on a daily basis about my acting career. Not many of my classmates have seen the movie Trainwreck because of the R rating. However those students and teachers that have seen the movie tell me it was hilarious and that I did a great job. As a young actor, what are your motivations? & your goals? By being an actor it has motivated me to learn about people from many different perspectives and circumstances.

Which actor/actress really influence you? Robin Williams is one of my favorite actors and I’m a huge fan of his movies, especially the Dead Poet Society, Good Will Hunting and of course Mrs. Doubtfire. I also really admire Jim Parsons and the Big Bang Theory is my favorite comedy. My favorite television drama is the Blacklist starring James Spader, he is amazing. I’m in awe when I watch James Spader portraying the character «Red» in the show. I hope to one day reach his level of expertise. What’s your worst nightmare? In acting it would be forgetting my lines. I use to worry about that when I was younger but not so much anymore. I have a good routine of memorizing dialogue and I just drill it into my brain. If it were a «dream» nightmare, then it would be falling to the ground. Normally it’s me falling from a cliff and right before I hit the ground I wake up. Recurring dream? I sleep pretty deep so I don’t remember any recurring dream. However I do dream of winning an Academy Award. Do you have other hidden talents? I’m a voracious reader and read about 100 pages a night before going to sleep. I usually read 2-3 books a week. Right now I’m reading my mom’s last book, All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony

«Robin Williams is one of my favorite actors and I’m a huge fan of his movies, especially the Dead Poet Society, Good Will Hunting and of course Mrs. Doubtfire. I also really admire Jim Parsons and the Big BangTheory...» When I’m researching a role for a character I try to imagine being in that person’s shoes and experiencing everything they encounter. From the dialogue that is part of the script to what happens before and after the scene. I feel that acting has encouraged me to look outside of my home, family life, school and friends. It has opened my eyes to the people in the world and what joys and struggles they face. My goal is to give that character a voice and authenticity. Tell us about your role in the new movie “Trainwreck”? I play the precocious and happy 9 year old Allister, the son of Mike Birbiglia and stepson to Brie Larson. Amy Schumer is my Aunt and Colin Quinn is my grandfather. Allister is kinda a nerdy kid and he takes after his father who is a grown up nerd. Amy doesn’t really care for me but by the end of the movie we make an emotional connection.

12

Doerr. I also like to do computer coding and I have created several computer programs for my dad. What do you do in your spare time? I practice the guitar, enjoy cross country running and playing golf. I also like playing video games with my friends, especially Minecraft. Where do you see yourself in five years from now? In 5 years I will graduate from High School. I plan to attend college and I’m not sure what I will choose as my major. I also would be thrilled to be in a lead role on a television series. I have many paths that my life could take and I feel very grateful for that.

|JOHNNY ACTIVE // HONE YOUR CRAFT. THINK LONG TERM. - by French Cxcaine Do you remember the first bars you recorded when you were younger? Would you be able to quote them? They were pretty bad. I think I had something about like, «you can’t do what I can, smack you in the face like Jackie Chan.» And I remember a line, «I got great by studying tapes» and I had a corny line when I was 14 that was like, «life without you is like a bar with no drinks.» The girls liked it at the time. I probably still have those notebooks somewhere. I’m a very nostalgic person. Who are your role models in the industry.... The artists that have always inspired you? Good question. In the beginning it was really Dr. Dre, Eminem, 50 Cent, Jay-Z. Musically and business-wise. I studied Dr. Dre & Jay-Z and the impact they had and then I studied Eminem and the impact he had on the game and then 50. I remember buying the Eminem Show album from a friend for $5 at lunch in the fifth grade and having my mind blown. But, when I learned that all of them, Dre, Em, 50, and Jay, had their own record labels and were not only making great music, but were doing things in clothing or movies or alcohol or other ventures, I was really inspired. Since then I’ve always wanted to build my own empire. I think the most modern example is Drake, clearly he is the guy right now, inspiring everyone. I also love what J. Cole is doing, he’s less flashy and less out there, but he’s really one of the greats we have. Kendrick, A$AP, Bronson, Childish Gambino, there’s so many.

plex. Like I said though, it’s improving and there is a handful of artists I know doing really great things and I’m positive, there’s more to come. Who is the team behind your movement? My producer Andrew Triple A. He’s working with a lot of other great artists but we work together on a regular basis. He’s a perfectionist that is able to create a lot. His perfectionism doesn’t slow him down, which is a rare trait. We have really good chemistry in the studio and he’s always trying to step his game up which in turn makes me push myself more. And then there is Tragic, who is a vet in the Canadian hip-hop underground scene. He’s a rapper himself in a group called Philly Moves but he’s sort of like my advisor to everything and he also helps with my bookings. iLLvibe, whom is also a vet rapper in the underground scene, is also one of my close confidants. I’ve got a handful of photographers that I work with, Emele Bennett and Lee Solo. Tell us about your upcoming new single entitled Guest List? What others projects are in store for the end of this year? Guest List is an anthem for the kids that were laughed at for doing their thing, but are now really winning. I used the idea of the guest list as a metaphor. Everyone is always trying to up their status, feel more important. There’s a lot of pressure on us. And I think the idea will resonate with a lot of young 20 somethings, especially those that go out a lot. It has a «look how the tables have turned» sentiment. I’m not spiteful though. It’s a

«On the Low» was inspired by late night conversations. The idea that when the night is quiet and still, that’s when everyone is most honest with each other.» Being one of the current rising rappers in Canada, do you feel that Canadian Hip Hop is totally underrated? Yeah, it is still fairly underrated. It’s for sure improving though. People don’t laugh at the idea of a Canadian rapper like they used to. Drake has helped to change the perception immensely . I think there is certainly more eyes on Canada now than ever before, specifically Toronto. And it’s not as if there is less talent per capita here. The only difference between us and the states is that there is less access and infrastructure and we have an inferiority com-

celebration. After Guest List, it’s more videos, more remixes and I’m currently working on an EP due out early 2016. What is the concept behind «On The Low» (2014)? «On the Low» was inspired by late night conversations. The idea that when the night is quiet and still, that’s when everyone is most honest with each other. I sort of tell a loose story of a girl coming over after I’ve thrown a party and her sitting on my couch and venting to me. We might be friends we might be more, who really knows.

«Touring California was amazing. My first American tour. I’l never forget it or the people I met along the way, shout out to Ramaj Eroc, Hona Costello, Dean Risko and Folayan.»

MR DREAMZ MAGAZINE - 2015

That’s still one of my favorites for sure. You recently released the «Take Me To Church (remix)» music video. What is the place of God in your life? As an artist and as a man... I believe in a higher power above me. I don’t know if it’s God or something else. I’ve always felt like there has been forces greater than us though. I try to put out as much positive energy as I can and keep the negative to a minimum. I find that helps. I’m learning to meditate. What is your opinion about the current state of Hip Hop? I know a lot of people will disagree with me but I think it’s great. The genre is changing and expanding. It’s becoming more

and more diverse. The game isn’t really divided by location anymore. Obviously, the internet has helped with that. It feels like there’s a lot more room for artists now to succeed. There’s more experimentation going on. What do you think about the recurring polemics about the N-word in Hip Hop songs? It’s all about context. I think if a word bothers you then that’s probably your problem. It’s up to the user to give words meaning and power and to the recipient to try to understand the intended meaning. In hip-hop particularly, that word usually doesn’t mean what it traditionally meant.

-ting into the music industry? Hone your craft. Network as much as you can. Don’t rush anything. Think long term. That’s the only way to survive. Never ask for anything right away. Be a good person. Raise your market value by making good music and being a good person. Hit as many open mics as you can when you are trying to figure your sound out and gain some performance chops. Don’t stress about your Instagram likes or followers or your Facebook likes or your Twitter followers, good music is more important. Always. Interview by B.B. Book.

//DARIN STEELE #HIPHOPVOICE MY INFLUENCE… I am influenced by many artists throughout time, a few that stick out would have to be Miles Davis, Roger Waters, Kurt Cobain, Tupac, Mac Dre, Erykah Badu, Lalah Hathaway and many more. I’m mostly influenced tho by my family, I come from a family of singers, Broadway dancers/actors and musicians so music has always been a natural part of my life.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE… Now a days, anyone could be a rapper. I believe it’s easier in that sense. As an artist of originality and being of something different, it is harder because music today is about keeping up with the hype. Which back in the 90s and prior was more or less about breaking barriers and doing it purely for the people, not just for the money.

MY INSPIRATION… It’s not the old school music that necessarily inspires me but the history and the times that the music came out of. See my generation is being easily manipulated by the things these artists say. The lack of a leader, a leader of Civil and Human rights and filling that void is my inspiration. I feel that we forget what we’re going through isn’t anything new, we just have conformed to be okay with the unfair conditions we’ve been given.

VISION OF HIP HOP… From myself and the rest of PFM, I believe we will resurrect true hip-hop and put this blasphemy they called hip-hop to rest. Too violent? More like too fake. If you’re really in or from the streets or have any association with real goons/thugs/gangsters you know that that lifestyle is nothing to glorify. I also believe these “rappers” are ruining the art form of rap and what it truly stands for.

«90’s HipHop Was About Breaking Barriers. Today, It’s Just Keeping Up With The Hype» POCKET FIXED MOB (PFM) is not only rap group im apart of, nor just a group of my friends, PFM is a movement of young individuals of change. Either you can run with us or run from us. The Original members include Darin Steele(me), Kahlil aka Wod Higgins, Breon Hill, Jibril, Jairus, Moose Marlowe, Don $crilla, Adam and Chris, along the years we’ve picked up Alec Good, Willy Bo, Sudi and Boom Bap Zac. A group too keep your eyes open for.

PROJECTS… I plan the release of my project, Dawg Eat Dawg, to be in Mid-November. I do not consider this to be a mixtape, ep, or album. This will be a concept demo about the inequality and misinterpretation of the freedom in America. A call to action, to unite the people who believe we as americans are being mistreated and underrepresented.

How can an artist change things? In Other words How can music impact positively on our societies problems? I believe that music was created by God to not only be an impact on a person positively but to change situations in a persons life. My music is not only good sounding but has a positive mark on a persons heart. Ive had testimonies of people who say that listening to my music has lifted their spirits when they were down. “Music Is To Motivate Those With No Voice” The craziest memory from my past… I would have to say til this day, is when my gramps told my mom she had to roll out and me & my lil brother had to go with her. I think from that day on is when I first learned the capabilites of how the Devil & God moves, cause from then on, it was all about overcoming hard life realities. The Struggle... Believe me, I use those words truly from the heart, as well as daily motivational thinking, and experience. My hardest challenge so far has been me being a survivor of dealing with Cancer (Lymphoma) at a early age & learning how to adjust to life as a Black Man working towards greatness plus raising my family thru ruff times we living in today. Philly HipHop Industry (definition)… Legendary, Underrated, and Limited. I believe there are just enough outlets and connects in Philly but, and not saying all of them but the ones with the names that have that local & global following where people constantly check that brand everyday, I think when a certain artist or group works with a budget building relationships with these name branded companies to help market your own, they should want to be more involved in plugging you in more, because now as the artist on the come up, you start repping their brand now as well as your own through promos because that branded name is giving you a platform to showcase your talent. Unfortunately it doesn’t work like tha. Thats why cats leave & go make it happen somewhere else the unity is crushed here.

26

Our Society… The problem in our society today is that we as people (all races) are being left with no hope to look forward to in life period. In my city, they’ve closed good schools down, closed down inspiring Rec Centers unemployment breaking records, every State economy keep combining all type of situations together to save money jeopardizing people’s jobs, families, & careers. As minorities, we’re charged high taxes for every rich persons complaints or mistakes, we all resorting to Temp Agencies for work if any available how long that last who knows…The Housing is hard! I mean you pick all kinds of main problems with society it’s really a pick any deal it depends on which ones effecting your pockets & way of living more.

Stage Name Rob Stashiz… Originally I called myself ‘DA REBEL’ then I changed my pitch up from being on that hard body street hustle. I was getting money plus pulling regular work hours so my grind game was all about working, hustling and stashing. I kept trees on deck from reggie to exotics, I still hit the studio always keeping a bookbag full of at least close to 10 books full of material, I mean thats what I do, I stash the goods but it’s Stash His just with a Z and of course Rob is part of my government issued. H.H.G.G (single)… I appreciate that motivation right there. The inspiration for Hustle Hard Grind Greedy saying came from my Uncle/Partner Phred6 being on this music grind with me and actually learning and figuring out the business and keeping me focused thru the industry B.S. and snakes. Unc watches me like I said dealing with my own inner personal life issues as you can hear, that’s how its detailed in the song. So thats the motto of the whole slogan “HHGG” being motivated and nothing holding you back from moving ahead in life. Atoduh42 is the Producer of the track & rap artist, plus a good homie of mine making some noise. We linked through social media years ago but he lives about a half hour outside of Philly.
