nevi Nevi, can you introduce yourself to our readers? Who are you and where are you based? My name is Nevi Brandan. I’m a Pop artist with a contemporary funk and R&B sound. I’m from Memphis,TN and I’m currently based in Los Angeles, California. Growing up, how important was music in your life? Do you remember the moment when you decided that you wanted to be a music artist? Music has always been my first love and sometimes I wonder were I’d be without it. Naturally I’m an introvert but music gives me confidence and ambition. I remember seeing Brandy and hearing her voice. I was so mesmerized, but also by fame. I remember saying, I want that. And I never asked for much so my mom and dad rushed to get her album “Never Say Never” and my very first radio. I started singing at age 3 but 1996 was my year. Radio and me were best friends and I think we drove everyone crazy that summer. He was my escape from all the bullying in school from everyone, everyday.

N.6

One day at my aunt Vera’s house, her and my aunt Ann asked me what I got for my birthday. With excitement I turned on Radio. I turned to my favorite record “One Voice”. I began to sing and overpower the music, and my aunts discovered my talent. I didn’t know what singing was at the time. I just remember the feeling and seeing the smiles on there faces! How has 2019 been treating you? What are some goals that you have for yourself this year? 2019 has been one of the best years of my life. I opened up for Sevyn Streeter in NYC, my music was chosen in a web series, I found myself and I relocated to Los Angeles. I’m just going with the flow baby!

Let’s talk about your newest EP “Shood”! Lol. “Shood” is a phrase that I use for the lack of a better term Bihh… or Shiid… Real Urban. My cousins brought it to my attention one day. I say it a lot! The title was chosen because I’m finally able to express myself as a LGBT artist. I finally get to talk about Boy Trouble and show visuals of what I go through in the LGBT community. I have one person on my team. Ghost who is my engineer. We just click musically. I do everything else by myself and I’m currently looking for a team. What are the lead singles? Can we expect new music videos? Yes! Music videos are my favorite. I’m so ready to create new visuals. I kind of let my fans decide on lead singles. But right now, it’s looking like “Delegation”, ”Glitch”, ”Sorry”, ”Pickens Store Road” and “Can’t Stop Loving You” are the music video picks. What has been the biggest surprise so far about making music your career? Discovering who I am as a artist, developing my sound and knowing what I stand for. Growth. Risk. Knowledge. Beyond music, we also noticed that you are a real fashionista! How did you get interested in fashion? My Aunt Dianne. She was fashion. I remember growing up watching her take simple garments and recreate them. I remember seeing photos of her beautiful, bold and fearless style and hair. She was a real brown skin beauty. She’s the reason for my knowledge in fashion. She wore unisex fashion and so do I. It’s one of my favorite things to do.

Would you ever consider designing your own line or working with a company to launch a feature? Yes! That’s a dream of mine. I would love to create a line for the boys who are feminine and bold. What are some of your favorite fashion trends now? Anything oversized, bold and print will always be my favorite fashion trend. What’s your next fashion must-have? Buffalo London Shoes! I’m obsessed! What are your favorite 5 brands? Buffalo London - Pyer Moss - Balenciaga Balmain - L’enchanteur.

What’s one thing that your readers would be surprised to learn about you? I’m a slob. I get so caught up in art that I will literally trash the place. I have to set a date and alarm to clean up. I wear red a lot but my favorite colors are Royal green and Royal blue. As an artist and fashion lover, describe your typical workday. A typical day for me starts with meditation and yoga. I’m very spiritual. Then I rehearse and create. I also read a lot. Interview by Joha Brown Photos by @itslarrydwayne

EDUCATION CAN CHANGE THE WORLD

neptune 1983

ELIZAVETA SHMAKOVA Hi Liza, can you tell us a little about you? Hi, My full name is Elizaveta Shmakova, but you can call me Liza. Right now I live in Miami, but originally I am from Russia. I moved to America 6 years ago to pursue my degree. You are really stylish. Very elegant! How did you get interested in fashion? I am very flattered to hear that. I always adhered to the rule: “Classic under the influence of time”. I believe that we should always emphasize our merits. Properly selected clothes can radically change the image of a person! The biggest influence is my mother, who loves high quality materials and the clothe that fit very well. When did you decide you wanted to share your passion on Instagram? I made my profile public only 10 months ago, because I realized how much information I wanted to share with people. My account growth has grown exponentially, because I interact with my followers every day and try to share useful information as much as I can.

N.10

As an influencer, are there particular brands you would love to work with now? Yes, I love promoting a healthy lifestyle and my education. Moreover, I care about the environment; therefore, I would love to work with environmental agencies and advocates in the future. Also, as a fashion lover, I have to admit I enjoy working with brands that promote beauty, femininity, and elegancy. Would you please share with us one fashion prediction you foresee for 2020? Since animal print was so popular this year, I can see how colorful zebra print will appear on fashionistas this year. 80s fashion will continue to be a trend. I can also predict more eco-material on

the shop-windows. Moreover, I really hope that natural makeup will continue to be a trend next year. Can you please share with us what a “day in the life” is like for you? Every single day of my life looks very different. However, the days have a lot in common. First of all, breakfast is very important for me, so I spend time cooking and enjoying it every day. Secondly, if I don’t have on campus classes, I take one or two online classes each day, since education is very important, I want to learn something every day. Then, I have some physical activity every day, it can be a gym, jogging, walking, or a quick workout at home. Beyond fashion, we also noticed that you are a programmer who is passionate about science. What is your educational background? Yes, that’s true. I have a bachelor degree in biological sciences and pre-med. Right now I am pursuing M.S. in bioinformatics (analysis of biological data, like DNA, RNA,proteins, etc). Also, I took many programming courses independently. Therefore, I have strong knowledge in biological field and in data analysis. However, I believe that practice makes perfect. I try to work on a few projects at the same time to gain experience. Right now I am working on my own project, related to biology and data analysis. Education is very important. Many problems already have been solved and we only need to find the methods for these solutions. Therefore, finding new information quickly and learning it fast are the skills needed for this decade. In IT industry and in fashion it’s very obvious, you need to keep up with information almost every day.

What fascinates you the most about science? During my undergrad, as a pre-med student I had to take physics, chemistry, biochemistry, math, different biology classes, where I learned a lot about our own body and the environment. Understanding HOW everything works helps to see a bigger picture and interaction between objects. Also, now I understand how different sciences work together. For example, when I work with DNA, I need to rely on my microbiology and cell biology knowledge to know how it works. To extract DNA, we use a lot of chemistry, microbiology, and physics. To analyze

N.12

“I started to believe in the importance of prevention more than treatment.” it, we write a code where we use programming and sometimes for advanced analysis we need math. However, education is not limited on science. To work on a project we also need to have good communication skills, and be able to react quickly, solve the problems right the way. Therefore, real life education and knowledge plays a key role in success.

If you could change something in the world, what would it be? I really want to make this world a better place, therefore I want to pick “an international recognized scientist”. When I reach this level, I would need to share my knowledge and become a successful influencer. Right now our world is facing many problems which have to be solved. Because I started to believe in the importance of prevention more than treatment, I gave up my medical eduction. In my opinion, changing lives locally won’t make big changes globally. That’s why I think that we need to start with eduction and adapt successful school programs, like in Finland. We need to work on 21st-century learning skills, improving communication and social skills, financial planning, critical thinking, problem-solving. In addition adding more real world experience to schools. These include more workshops, shadowing, and interning. Aside from science and fashion, what are you passionate about? That is a good question. I really enjoy reading about new technologies. I try to visit conferences about new technologies and IT industry each year, like CES and Web Summit. Also, I dedicate some time each day to working out. I used to be a competitive track athlete; therefore, I can’t see my life without athletic aspect.

2019 neptune 1983

REGO Rego, how did you get started with playing and creating music? As a kid, I would wait for my parents to leave the house, and all I would do for hours was sing. I first decided to pursue music as a career, May of 2018, after I graduated from Temple and had a breakdown contemplating my pursuit of a Ph.D in Race and Politics. I figured, while my mind and looks are this sharp and at optimal functioning, why notake a risk and spend that same energy I would have spent on a Ph.D, instead, on pursuing a platform for change that I would love to do for the rest of my life.

N.14

How has your music evolved since your beginnings? I would describe my sound to be a mixture of genres such as, “soul punk trap pop?” It is moody like The Weeknd however combines some R&B slides and trap beats. As my voice is growing I am exploring different characters. I am seeing how to use the unique low and resonant tones to best convey the intersections of my identities and tell my story. Let’s talk a bit about the process. I usually start by humming a melody. If I can’t hear it in my head by the first beat drop then the song doesn’t usually happen to that beat. After I get a melody I like, I put words together and think about where I want to take the song. My EP “To Be Determined” is an introduction to my struggles as Rego.

What is your songwriting process like? I try to sit down to write at least once everyday and I usually start at the intro and replay the first beat drop over and over. When I’ve gotten basic words and a mood to my introduction I start to shape the song. I rarely finish writing the song the first day because I always tend to find my own meaning as the song helps me analyze how I am feeling. I wanted “To Be Determined”(EP) to demonstrate my vocal flexibility, and introduce Rego as an artist who is capable of leaving her listeners wanting more. Each song highlights a different mood in a different space and time.

“PRAY FOR YOU

is about struggling to overcome vices.” Why did you choose “To Be Determined” as the title of your EP? The title was chosen because I felt it adequately reflects the meaning of the EP as it relates to myself and to my audience. The album art, designed by Eric Tomasek, depicts three masks being juggled or shifting between two hands. It is to be determined what dynamic my next song will sound like and the person I will become through my music is also metaphorically to be determined.

Which musicians & songwriters have been the greatest influence? I drew most of my sound inspiration from The Weeknd, Shakira, Rihanna, and Lauryn Hill. My favorite albums include Trilogy by the Weeknd, Choose Your Weapon by Hiatus Kaiyote, and Anti by Rihanna. I think Britney Spears and Pink play some part in the attitude of my music.

SHE GO THERE Photos by @shanischen & @groovytrain Interview by Winnie MC

2019

What are your plans for 2020? I am looking to put together a team dedicated to regothereshego. I will be releasing more visuals for the EP consistently through the end of 2020, along with new singles too! Depending on where TBD takes me, I hope to release another project in Summer 2020. In the meantime, I plan to perform on bigger stages in Philly and in other cities on the east coast. I hope my message of self-actualization finds bigger audiences, and touches those who need it all over the world.

Can you tell us more about “No Child Detention Petition”? No Child Detention PA is a campaign to spread awareness and shut down child detention facilities in PA. I work for Juntos which is a community led Latinx Immigrant’s Rights non-profit in South Philadelphia and they are vehemently working to end the multi-million dollar industry that youth detention centers have become in America. Children and families are being detained every day without subpoenas or a court date or without legal council. I have a link to the petition in my bio because not everyone knows where to start when fighting for a cause.

neptune 1983

N.15

What can you tell me about your single “Pray For You”? The song is about struggling to overcome vices. I wanted the song to sound like I was climbing up and down a ladder, and I wanted to invoke a feeling of anticipation and tension. I thought that the phrase “Polly wants a cracker” represented the dynamics between feeling forced to consume a vice while loving the stockholm syndrome. The music video is an example of satirical avant garde storytelling that captures the moodiness of the song.

Dakota, what got you started in personal training? I got started personal training because I realized all the knowledge and the experience I have in the fitness industry could really help people and I wanted to put quality coaching out there. I’ve heard of so many horror stories and wanted people to know they can come to me for sustainable results. What is your athletic and education background? I’ve ridden horses competitively my whole life in the equitation and jumper world, I went on to ride in IHSA at the university of kentucky where I studied equine science and economics. I’ve played volleyball competitively since middle school to high school, beach volleyball leagues as well as various rec leagues in college. I’ve always been very active! I started lifting and getting more into fitness around sophomore year of

As an entrepreneur, how do you market your services? Instagram is my only marketing platform really. I am working on other outlets but this is all I need right now! I simply let people know what I have to offer, and let my clients results speak for me. What are some of the characteristics of a great fitness coach? A great coach will put your health first and constantly educate themselves. Another important factor is simply having a great connection with others. You need to know how to communicate with all sorts of people, and just be really down to earth. I don’t care if you have 50 doctorate degrees, if you can’t communicate and socialize well then coaching is not for you.

“You need to fuel your body properly if you expect it to achieve great results.” high school, so i’ve been lifting for about 7 years now. I got my coaching certificate from Fitness Online Coaching Academy before starting my coaching business. Do you have a particular philosophy with regards to coaching? Yes, my goal with all of clients is to help them reach their goals in a healthy sustainable manner. Metabolic health is my number 1 priority. Long term success > quick fixes.

N.18

treats, spices, etc. The foundation of your goals is a healthy *stress free* body. These products are great for those with anxiety and high stress.

How important is diet & nutrition to help you achieve your goals? Diet and nutrition is the key to reaching your fitness goals. I’m sure you have heard of the saying “you can’t out work a bad diet” and that’s 100% true. You need to fuel your body properly if you expect it to achieve great results. Cured nutrition is a CBD company that has a variety of CBD based products such as hemp oils, dog

What do you use for recovery (foam roll, massage, ice)? I like to give myself 1 day a week where I just focus on light cardio, stretching, and sauna. This has made a huge difference in recovery. But the best form of recovery is SLEEP. Don’t underestimate it. What impact has your Instagram account had on you? This past year I’ve actually focused on posting consistently and trying to grow my audience organically. I know social media gets a bad rap but it doesn’t have to be that way. I try to put out information that is helpful and educational. If you follow people that make you not feel good, stop following them and follow pages that are helpful and inspiring. That’s what I try to do with my page. When someone messages me and says a simple post helped them get to the gym or helped them realize what they were doing wrong, that makes me happy.

KYFFIN BROWN Who have you learned the most from? Most of my knowledge of photography I have gained from the internet and watching endless videos on photography from how to compose images to which lens to use. Youtube has been an amazing way for me to learn the art of photography because there are so many amazing creators who want to help fellow photographers improve. I’ve also been very fortunate to be surrounded by

What was your proudest moment in your photography career so far? The proudest moment of my photography career may not be what you expect. It was when I uploaded a photo to my page and the first time someone commented and said that I had inspired them to pick up a camera again and start photography. That personally outways any monetary

neptune 1983

Kyffin, thanks for doing this interview with us from Sidney, Australia. Were you formally educated in photography, or are you self taught? For the most part I am self taught through watching online videos and just getting out there and experimenting with a camera which I think is very important in order to develop a style as a photographer. I am currently studying for a degree in film production which has taught me a lot about the world of photography and the technical aspects of it.

“I believe a camera is only as good as the photographer wielding it, as cliche as that sounds.” friends and family who have been very supportive and willing to give me feedback and take part in my photography and filmmaking which I am very grateful for.

What are your favorite subjects and locations in Sidney (Australia)? My Favourite Subjects and locations in Sydney to shoot would obviously first of all have to be the Iconic Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as well as the city night life and the incredible sunrises and sunsets we are so lucky to have here. If you could tell yourself anything when you first started out, what would you say? Stop stressing so much about finding your photography niche and style so fast, just take it slow, experiment and find what you enjoy to shoot!

2019

What camera do you use the majority of the time? Is gear important? The camera I use at the moment and have been for the past year is the Canon 80D, it is an incredible camera and has managed to somehow survive all the stuff I’ve thrown at it from fire to rain to just about anything. Do I think gear is important? To some extent I do because some photos require a certain standard of gear to obtain the look you want. but I do also believe a camera is only as good as the photographer wielding it, as cliche as that sounds.

Hi Lydell, can you introduce yourself for those who don’t already know you? I am just a driven individual who will stop at nothing to be legendary. I am a risk taker in every sense of the word and I am here to change it one random act of kindness at a time. You have been in the entertainment industry for a long time. What initially pushed you into the video production field? I got burned twice by the same company when editing my videos when I started my music career ten years ago. I lost a deal with a major as when I went in, they literally told me that the first edit of the video was so abysmal that they will have to pass. To add injury to insult it took them a year to receive the finished product. My first 5 videos were

N.24

“I am a risk taker in every sense of the word.” abominations unto mankind. LOL. I was so disgusted by these productions that I picked up a camera and purchased Final Cut Pro X in 2011. After learning how to edit myself, I took a year off and got back to the music and the rest is history. The visual which usually comes at the end of the creative process for an artist is the most worthwhile aspect of the journey. This literally damaged my music career in it’s infancy and it took me three to

four years to get back to the relavency that took a few years to have. I make sure that upcoming artists have a visuals that rivals the majors. Once that deal didn’t go through I didn’t want to chance being disappointed like that ever again. It can ruin your psyche if you are not built for this music industry. Now I am signing artists to my independent label and making sure they have better visuals than I ever did. You must pay it forward. Because I didn’t make it to the upper echelon doesn’t mean I can’t assist those who trust me with their careers. Do you prefer to shoot videos or photos? Videos all the way. Photography is a drag as it’s practically the same thing over and over. I used to do wedding photography and burned out after a year as even though you are capturing once in a lifetime moments, the rhetoric is the same. With videos you drive the vision as it comes from a place how you envisioned it. You are the visionary and your edits can illicit certain emotions from the viewers. You have the ability to change an individuals mode. You literally become a Demi-god in a sense. You are the reason an artist makes it or not. You are the reason their fan base salivates and then share in their success. It’s always “hey did you see that artist video?” As a director that is the best feeling ever.

“when you take your time, you start overthinking and then you become your worsT enemy.”

Is there a central theme you’re trying to communicate through your videos? The inner self must be awoken while the outer self watches in awe. I want my audience to experience in the man vs man, himself, God, Mother Nature and I definitely do what ever it takes. Are there any future projects you can tell us about? Will be working on my own short titled West Reno Ave top of the year. Very excited to get this project off the ground. Also I will be working on a docu-series with a scientist. I have a lot of other projects in the works but these two aforementioned got me very excited. Definitely will like to say thank you for your time.

You are also a real globe trotter! During your travels, what’s the most exciting country you ever visited? Did you also shoot over there? Right now that will still be Turkey than South Africa. I love the culture and the people in Turkey but what really took my breath away was the food. Delicious!! I finally touched the mother land I feel the same way about the indigenous. Very polite and loving nation as a whole. I will be heading back again to both in the next 6 to 8 weeks. I will admit that I’m hooked.

How long does it take you to create and edit a video? It really depends on the client’s expectation and budget. I am known for my 6 to 8 hours turn around time on complete 3 to 5 minute visuals whether it be a music video for a documentary style production. My brain waves operate better under duress and satisfying a paying consumer is all that matters to me. Sometimes when you take your time you start overthinking and then you become your worst enemy.

How much equipment do you use to film and take photos? What is your favorite camera and your favorite lens? Why? I just shoot on the Red Epic MX for now. Later this year I will be upgrading to an Arri Alexa SXT Plus as I have coveted this beast of a machine for over four years. When it comes to lenses I love the Tokinias cine lenses but my dream lenses will be either Angenieux Optimo or Cooke Anamorphic. With the Cooke primes there is an unmatched look that glass brings to the table. Coupled with the color science of the Arri and you just created virtual fantasies.

How did you get your start working in marketing? I studied marketing and communication, so that’s how I started in the industry. I acquired professional experience along with the internships and the jobs I have fulfilled. Can you introduce the company? What are the services provided by HBLC? HBLC Marketing develops content around an integrated digital strategy tailored to meet all your marketing and content creation goals. Our team manage your online image with our community management service and we produce the content you need to stand out and differentiate from the competition with our content creation service. What are key characteristics that every great digital marketer needs? A great capacity of adaptation and, I would say, that the key strength must be analysed, synthesised and understand statistics and results.

Tell us three things you love the most about this city and three things you hate? I love the multicultural environment, the dynamism, the squirrels in the parks. I hate pollution, the overpopulation and the weather. As a marketer, how do you use Instagram on a daily basis? What is your strategy? How are you building your own personal brand? I have a strategy for each of the account I manage. I use Instagram daily as consistency is the key and I only post high-quality photos as content is king. fashion

I really got into fashion and its history in college, but I’ve always just been a creative person. I don’t necessarily try to follow any specific trends. I just do what I feel or what may pop into my mind.

I really love tennis shoes and hiking boots. I used to be all heels all the time but now I’d rather wear a pair of Air Max 98s or a pair of hiking boots from Urban Outfitters.

must-have

I really what to shop some of the amazing designers I see on Instagram. My saves on Instagram are full of new brands and designers that most people haven’t discovered yet.

insta outfits

My favorite outfit is probably when I had straight blue hair with blue bangs, a unitard that I cut into shorts, Nike socks and a pair of Airmax 97 Ultra 17 SE shoes on. I love that picture; I’m not sure exactly why but I think I’ve always loved sporty looks.

hobbies

Honestly music is my life. I don’t think about anything or doing anything else that doesn’t involve music.

about me

I’m a very up front and bold person. I say exactly what’s on my mind, I’m not going to beat around the bush like,”Hey, What have you been doing in the last year, How’s your family?”; Nope I’m like “Hey are you free on Thursday, this is what I’m trying to do and this is the outcome I want it to have”. But that’s probably because i’m part of the Sagittarius gang lol. Were the best lol!

I don’t think I really care heavily about the brand and more about what it actually looks like. I lived in New York once and people would come up to me asking me what I did because they loved the way I dress. I most likely got everything from Forever 21 and Zara, so you can look great no matter where it’s from. I briefly interned at Marie Claire Magazine in 2013 and since then I’ve loved and respected the designer over a specific brand so much more. I’ll shout out 5 brands that I’ve seen on Instagram that I think people should check out:@theklabel, @mymum_madeit,@friskmegood.inc,@concolourstudio, @ amarachi.co.uk.

Every day is definitely different. Some days I’m in a session, some days I’m in my room working on a song alone, some days I’m researching different marketing tactics or people to reach out to, and some days I’m taking pictures for Instagram.
