“I have to say that it hurts me deeply to see that here is STILL, in 2014, an issue looming between blacks and whites for example. I actually find it quite awkward and a total waste of energy” - Chantal Kreviazuk Winnipeg, Canada is where you are from originally... How can you describe this area in three words for our readers? Cold. Isolated. Inspiring How was the music scene in Canada while you were growing up? Everyone is very creative I feel. We were all busy at our craft and the district I grew up in was really into the classical “royal conservatory of music of Canada” curriculum for skill development at piano or violin or whatever your instrument was (I did singing and piano and theory). Then junior high and high school was all about “battle of the bands,” joining a rock band, and all that good stuff. Tell us 3 things you love about Canada... 1. The north/polar bears 2. Cottage country 3. John Candy How is living in Los Angeles now different than where you grew up? I love LA because of its expansive natural landscape, but it’s SO different than home because of the “access” to absolutely everything. Where I grew up, we were always the last to get anything hip or new to the pop cultural landscape... like last to get a Starbucks or Walmart or whatever. After so many years in the industry, what is the secret of your longevity? I prioritize my authentic life experience.... Nurturing my relationship with all the things/people I love - husband, kids, relatives, close friendships, and service in my community.... that spawns, as a natural biproduct, all of my creativity and inspiration. Once in a while, that leads to success! All along your career, you have written a lot of songs placed on movies soundtracks... It also underlines the fact that your music is very powerful, mixing
different strong emotions and feelings. Where do you find the inspiration to be so productive? I think I have a ‘worker bee’ type of gene or something... I possibly got it from my dad, who comes from a long line of hard working farmers. I just have a lot of energy and strong work ethic that I can never really turn off for very long. I just naturally get triggered to manifest thoughts and feelings into something tangible. You seem to be a very simple and down to earth woman, however, what would you say “bugs you” most in today’s music industry? Auto tune. I love the nuances of everyone’s voice and the more auto tune or pitch correction I hear, I lose that uniqueness in the tone of the artist. This leads to a generic thing in a vocalist... it bugs me. If you could be in the studio working on music and have anyone doing a duet with you, who would it be? Absolutely my husband, Raine Maida. I love working with him! We started a project called MOON VS SUN and I love every moment of bringing it with him! You just performed on Saturday Night Live with Kendrick Lamar & Jay Rock for your collaboration track Pay For It... What was that experience like working with that show and the two of them? I have loved every moment working with Kendrick. He is the voice of a generation, and it is such an honor to be anywhere near his project. He speaks about meaningful things, and has incredible values and ideas. I loved getting to do SNL with them boththey were so gracious and patient with me! I was nervous! Not sure if they knew that, but I am sure it was written on my face! I cannot imagine much better circumstances under which to play SNL at this stage in my life and career, honestly. What an amazing gift!
You have also been featured with Drake... Will you be doing any more hip hop cross-overs in the future? Hip hop and urban is so incredible. I find this creative freedom in this genre and I hope to continue to build upon my amazing experience with Drake/40 and of course Kendrick/Sounwave. More than an artist, you are also a thinker. What are the topics that concern you today? If you could change the world, what would you do? I think about so many issues, and am very curious about their causes, effects and solutions. Living half in the US and half in Canada, I see a much greater issue regarding living in diversity in the US. I have to say that it hurts me deeply to see that here is STILL, in 2014, and issue looming between blacks and whites for example. I actually find it quite awkward and a total waste of energy. I am trying to be tolerant of the history involved here, so to understand where it comes from. I am hopeful, with people standing up and demanding change, using their voices, that this will finally get nipped in the bud. I see this problem elsewhere in Canada, within our Aboriginal problems. I am from the first generation, I believe of not having shame. My grandmother was Metis, and her children, like her, were taught to be quiet about her roots. I love to shout it from the rooftop because I think it’s completely dope to know your history, and I think everyone should be so proud of where they come from, and everything that our ancestors had to fight for and through to bring us to his moment in time. Can you tell us more about your recent video for your new hit single, “I Will Be”? What’s the concept, the story behind it? I think we’re all so hard on each other. We need to stop with the judgement, and start with the tolerance. This song is me feeling incredibly empathetic and forgiving of myself and others. It’s a promise to be a giant love ball. What does 2015 hold for you? I am always so busy with music. I would imagine that won’t change too much in 2015. I will keep writing and keep on keeping on! What is your ultimate goal and dream these days? My dream is to get to sing “I Will Be” for the whole world! I love singing it so much!

ERIC TORO
Interview by Gigi Kerington
My Inspiration...
“I would have to say my mother, she always kept me in the positive lane and was by my side through everything...” What is your definition of BEAUTY? Beauty, to me, could be defined differently by the eyes that are observing the individual. I believe that beauty is held within the person that holds it and will be specifically defined by who ever notices it. How long have you been in the modeling industry? I had began modeling in June of this year and since my first shoot I have been loving it! At what point in your life did you know that you wanted to be a model? “I was never the type to be in pictures” until After high school. That’s when I really started taking pictures. I had mental images and poses in my head that I thought would look nice and people would like. After, i received positive responses so it made me feel more photogenic and i wanted to be in front of the camera again and again. Tell us how you are unique compared to other models. what do you bring to the modeling industry? “I bring nothing but my best”. I know the industry is all about the competition but I believe that being well prepared and respectful get the job done. It is something I am capable of bringing to the table at all times. How is the modeling industry in your area? Do you feel that there are a lot of opportunities for young upcoming models? The modeling industry in my area is not really easy at all. Philadelphia does not have many clothing companies like New York City and not many programs for modeling so you pretty much are left to find your way in it.
Is Modeling your full time job ? I have not had the opportunity to do modeling as a full time job, but it is something I have been working on since I have began attending shoots. How many tattoos you got ? Which is your favorite one ? I have 4 tattoos but have to say my favorite one is the one on my right forearm. It’s a Japanese koi fish! For you, what characteristics are the most important to succeed in this industry? A Determined friendly, motivated, respectful individual that can get the job done and have fun at the same time . Who would you say is the person that did really inspire you? I would have to say my mother, she always kept me in the positive lane and was by my side through everything. Do you plan on going into other things like acting? Singing? What are your other talents? I haven’t thought yet about any other talents but if I do, it may be acting. What do you do in your spare time? Usually, when I have spare time on my hands, I’m at the gym trying to keep my body in shape and looking for nice photographers to work with. If I’m not doing that, then I’m relaxing with my family. What is, for you, the definition of a DREAMER? I think there’s a variety of dreamers. You have some dreamers who know what they want and go for it by any means and you have dreamers that try to patiently wait for it to come true.

“I do wish that more rappers would approach making music as an art form, and choose a message that the listener may grow from and appreciate.”
Interview by Jean Paul Glass
JBRE x DOUGIE DEMARCUS RASHAD KENT 18
Interview by Geene Vodka
“Life is an emotional experience. Learning to deal with your emotional response is the greatest challenge in this whole evolutionary process.” How could you define your music in one word? Reflection of Culture. Where do you come from and how did you get into music? I was born and raised in Houston,TX. My family is responsible for influencing me to become an artist. When I was younger, I spent a significant amount of time creating and singing songs with my grandmother. It was just our way of entertaining each other. I began writing poetry in the 6th grade, overtime I developed an appreciation for sharing it. My older cousin named Jabari, is the person who influenced me to actually start rapping. Jabari was a rapper, and I witnessed him grow a buzz in the city with a hit song, his group had on the radio in 2009. The experience was empowering for me. After I graduated from school I committed to peruse a career as an artist. Nowadays, Gangsta Hip Hop leads the market with guns & drugs apology... Is there too much violence in Hip Hop ? What is your opinion? I believe music is a reflection of our culture, and that it can also be a projection of what our culture could be. Unfortunately, we live in a culture where violence and drug abuse has become the norm. It is present in major films, cartoons, and video games. I can’t fault an artist for expressing violent behavior if that’s a culture that they were submerged in. However, I do wish that more rappers would approach making music as an art form, and choose a message that the listener may grow from and appreciate. Philosophy, zen spirit, wisdom... As an artist, do you feel like an alien in today’s music industry? I can’t say I feel like an alien because other artists, producers, and supporters of my music often times tell me that my choice of words resonates with them in some way.
What is your main message behind your art? Every project that I create differs from the other because it is a reflection of where I am in life in that particular time. My focus is creating positive vibrations and imagery that may empower others to better themselves on a more personal level. Do you have other talents ? I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Texas in San Antonio. The degree program trained me to develop a love and a skill for doing research. I utilize this skill to help community organizers gather the resources they need to be successful in meeting the needs of the community. Talking about wisdom & positive attitude, we found some similarities between you and rappers like Lupe Fiasco & Common for example... Did they inspire you? Yes, without a doubt. They’re many artist who have inspired me to choose the lane of artistry that I chose, such as Erykah Badu, Jay Electronica, Kid Cudi, and Andre 3000. Can you introduce your project «Star Track »? Star Track is a unique body of work, focused on expressing my search for better understanding myself and my relationship with my creator. The project is unique because it includes Hindu mantras and Sanskrit prayers with lyrics that express spiritual principles related to growing into your higher self.
What are you cooking for 2015? Next year I will be releasing a new project called Elevator Muzak. It is about the emotional ups and downs we experience as we go through life. I am excited about it. I plan on expanding on what I was able to do this year with being visible in the community and also being present on the tour circuit. Any particular messages for our readers ? Life is an emotional experience. Learning to deal with your emotional response is the greatest challenge in this whole evolutionary process. Our worldly issues are only a physical manifestation of the internal problems that we have. Although we can’t control the environment around us we all possess the ability to control ourselves in relation to the environment. Seeking happiness is not the answer, but seeking contentment and peace within yourself is. Follow Me Instagram @demarcusrashad Twitter @De_MacusRashad Facebook De Marcus Rashad

What’s the concept behind the single HAIL MARY ? Hail Mary is a prayer. The idea behind it is expressing the fact that we are surrounded by negativity on this earth and my constant search for peace. In the song I say “trapped within the pollution of this vessel, sending Hail Mary’s trying to find union when its stressful.” I am a spirit trapped inside of my body, surrounded by negativity; including the negativity I bring on myself & I am simply praying for protection and peace.

Thanks for sharing with us the “Go Fore Broke” experience. The pleasure is all mine! More than a store, More than business... It is a concept based on determination and personal achievement! “My Challenge? Being able to constantly reinvent myself and my creative drive on very time-restricted deadlines and demands.” When did you know you wanted a career as a designer? I was about 15 years old when something just clicked. I would spend countless hours sketching, experimenting with fabrics, studying the craftsmanship of sewing, draping and drafting patterns. The love for the process grew with time and after attending FIDM, I knew right away I was meant to do this. Many years later, I can honestly say listening to my gut and risking it all was the best decision I’ve ever made! As a creative artist, what inspires you the most? The simple things in life. They set truth to my artistry. What is the most enjoyable part of your job? Meeting and experiencing people from all walks of life as well as creating timeless art

under pressure of constant movement and change. What is the biggest challenge as a costume designer? Being able to constantly reinvent myself and my creative drive on very time-restricted deadlines and demands, while still staying true to myself as a designer. What is your favorite fashion look? Style to work with? Since most of my design work is driven by music, stage and performance outlets, I strive to combine all avenues of fashion and costuming. All are relevant and all hold great value that inspire my work. Who are some of your favorite clients you’ve worked with?
P!NK, Selena Gomez, Carrie Underwood, Juliette Lewis, Ne-Yo, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry… to name a few. None the less, I’m very fortunate that I’ve had the pleasure to work with some of the best in the industry and consider each and every one of my clients to be a special moment in my career. What tips can you provide to young people who are trying to break into the industry as well? To embrace the beauty of self expression and self worth, never fear failure or rejection and never/ever compromise your artistry. What are your goals/plans for 2015? I would love to eventually venture out into the film industry. I look forward to 2015 being that year of change for me.

Kyle Trattner Kyle, can you tell us what does TICKLD exactly means? Tickld can mean many things. It depends who you ask! It can mean “friendship” and “acceptance” to a community member who frequents the site to socialize with others. It can mean “leisure time” and “diversion” to an individual who simply visits the site to catch up on the day’s content. It can also mean “no sleep” and “hard work” to a co-founder and full-time professional Ticklr! How did the adventure begin? My co-founder James and I spent the vast majority of our leisure time at university consuming content on the Internet. We often discussed ways our favourite websites could improve their substance and functionality. We built Tickld, and within a couple weeks I found myself spending many enjoyable hours developing for the site instead of reading judgments and legislation in preparation for tutorials. James, throughout university, didn’t own a single pen! He lived on his laptop. The Internet, and Tickld specifically, became our calling. Did you expect such an incredible success when you started? Of course not! We set out to build a basic website that could host a small community of university students who shared in our mission. Tickld quickly took on a life of its own as its community members began to contribute fantastic, creative original content and ernest discussion.

Is laughter the best medicine to face our society’s problems? I think the best medicine to face our society’s problems is a strong dose of quality education. Although everyone learns in their own way, education through entertainment is relatively universal. It’s never good to laugh off a problem, but there’s nothing wrong with a lighthearted approach to problem solving. Hard question... Can we laugh about everything? Or are there some burning topics to avoid? What is your opinion? Our world is populated by billions of people from varied backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures, who differ in their views about what is considered offensive and acceptable. With such global diversity there will always be differences about what is considered offensive and that someone somewhere in the world may be offended by the opinions, perspectives and creative expressions of others. Tickld aims to be an inclusive community. Humour should be inclusive. A joke is always funnier when you’re enjoying it with friends. If the intent of your humour is to marginalize an individual or group of individuals, it’s no longer humourous. Which comedians are your top 3 to see/watch and why? My answer to that question is always changing! Chelsea Peretti, Nick Offerman and Ricky Gervais are at the top of my list as of late. Their film, television and standup characters borrow so much from real-life personas, which gives their brand of comedy a special truthfulness and relatability.
