Unique Business Stories:
Praveena Thakor The Laundry Lounge I had the pleasure of meeting the up and coming business owner of the fabulous Laundry Lounge on the Bristol Road in Gloucester and services Gloucester, Quedgeley and Hardwicke areas to name just a few. The Laundry Lounge is a unique concept in its sector as Praveena has created a clean, comfortable and chilled environment or her customers whilst they wash their clothes. Praveena is a thoughtful, intelligent and ethical business lady who is completely unique at what her business does, this is Praveen’s story in her own words: Most of my family have their own business or are heavily envolved in commerce, so it was only a matter of time I think before I started my own business. My family were very good at encouraging their kids to excel in education I achieved a Degree in Business & Law and considered getting a Masters in Intellectual Property Instead I went the corporate route in employed world with C&G and eventually trained up to be a financial advisor. I then met my future Canadian husband and
p a ge 4
planned our future in Canada where I emigrated. We had two beautiful children ...happy times or so I thought. My husband admitted to having a long affair. My Canadian paperwork was still in its early stages so I was not recognised and had no rights. It was a messy and heartbreaking divorce and my ex-husband was a bully. I eventually came back to UK with absolutely nothing apart from the most important my son and daughter. I decided to be a full time mother to my two lovely children and to focus on them, over time I got the call to work for myself. I investigated several ventures but wanted something which fitted around taking my children to school and spending quality time with them. I then got the idea of running a laundry centre with a difference it had to be clean, comfortable and somewhere where people can chill out whilst they do their washing. Eventually the unit came up on Bristol Road and with the help of my parents my dream started to be a reality. I also managed to get the maximum funding from a local charity trust called Fredericks Foundation, this was an amazing experience
u n i qu e ch e l t e n h a m . c o . u k
as it included pitching my business to 10+ people on the decision panel. My business was approved on the day and Fredericks have also asked me to do promotional work for them at different networking events. I eventually got the Planning permission required for change of use and in July 2013 The Laundry Lounge was born, it was a large initial investment with the washing machines which I bought outright. The first three months were slow and I worried that I was doing the right thing but it quickly picked up and my fears abbitated. The services we offer include Service Washes from £3.50, Ironing and Alterations and more.
it all happened for a reason. I’m fiercely independent and strong willed. Once I knew what I wanted I put my plans into action. To find out more about Praveena and what services The Laundry Lounge offer take a look at www.thelaundrylounge.co.uk or Call 07729 531521
Unique say: Well done Praveena your hard work, application and innovation will take you far
Praveena has plans to expand the Commercial arm of her business as currently they look after 25-30 commercial clients inc football and rugby teams and with plans for a pick up and delivery service by early next year. Future plans also include winning more Commercial customers ideally B&B’s & Hotels, Praveena is looking into and researching the possibility of franchising the Laundry Lounge in the future...it’s a long way away yet but everything is a possibility. In her spare time Praveena loves to run, read books, travelling, and learning new languages, spending quality time with her children and loves socialising with her friends. Despite everything which happened.....

Y R E V O C E R D N A D E ADDICT with Annoymous I started gambling when I was 17 years old... I was attending GlosCol in Cheltenham and got friendly with a lad who liked the odd bet on horses and football. My gambling carried on normally into my first employed job where I could pop to the bookies a few times a week to bet on horses, again this was on £1 or £2. Over the next few months something started to click in my head that this was easy money and the bets slowly started to increase from £2 to £5 per bet and also gambling every day in addition to having extended lunch breaks and skiving parts of the afternoon. I then managed to get a different job which was well paid and then the my life and gambling started to become unmanageable as I was well and truly Addicted. I would skive off work to go to racing events at Cheltenham or go to the bookies...I would also go to the bookies when I should of been managing a business. Addicts have to lie to cover their tracks so loved ones do not know what you are getting upto. Addiction is very much about pleasure, pain and the lie’s that you tell yourself and others every day it really is like being on a Hamsters wheel..circle of
addiction with no way out...or so I thought. I would be telling elborate lies to my girlfriend of the time or starting arguments so I could go gambling...gambling was my life and everything else had to fit round it. You have moments of clarity where you realise you need help and need to stop but then you end up stealing or manipulating someone to get money once your own funds dried up. After several crisis points in my life I called Gamcare and they pointed me in the direction of a Self Help group for Gamblers, slowly but surely my life started to improve as I was given some new life skills to help stop me gambling. As the years went by I relapsed a couple of times but now I have been clean for a good period of time, I now work on my recovery and try to help other compulsive gamblers do the same. Whatever your addiction there is always a way to start again, my future is now what I make of it :)
Thanks

Tattoo or Taboo Tokyo Tattoo is a avant-garde tattoo studio at 13 The Courtyard off Montpellier Street in Cheltenham. Deano the owner chilled out with our very own Sarah Mckew @LadyMckew as they shared his vision for Tokyo Tattoo.
Tattoo or
SM: What’s your vision with TokyoTattoo?
SM: What makes you different?
Deano: I want to change the image of tattooing and create a brand. But, more importantly, give our clients confidence, with high standards and high quality hygiene. The position of the studio was important to us, with a top end studio, no expense spared. We are also the first tattoo studio that’s a limited company. We are a lifestyle brand with an avant-garde studio.
Deano: I want our clients to walk into TokyoTattoo and be at ease. It’s clean, its pristine each station has an iPad docking station, so the guests can relax listen to the music they want to listen to, if they don’t like what’s playing at that point.
SM: It’s obvious when you walk into TokyoTattoo that it is a bright, clean studio. Are you setting a trend with studios? Deano: No. We are setting the benchmark of how it should be, by setting high standards. It’s not a trend. Trends come and go. We pay attention to detail and maintain a very high standard of hygiene SM: What do you do to maintain the high standards? Deano: We only use organic ink. Some inks used around the world are poisonous we are trying to help the industry. We don’t want to be streamlined.
p a ge 16
We are updating the market and making tattooing luxurious, giving the customer what they want. We have a minimum of two guest artists a month, giving more choice and no waiting lists. SM: You have thought of everything, does this include the brands stocked in the studio? Deano: We have Brand Ambassadors; we are the first studio to do this. They have a large following so we help promote them and promote us. We have the bestselling Beard Oil, Apothecary 87 by fashion model Chris Millington, clothing from Prang Out and Pride Aftercare products which are the best in the world.
Tattoo or Ta u n i qu e ch e l t e n h a m . c o . u k
SM: Do you want to talk about Rocking the Cotswolds? Deano: We are so proud to be recognised for bringing something different and unique to the Cotswolds. Out of 300 nominees we have been classed as a “rocker of the Cotswolds”. It’s nice to be accepted and to be a feature of the Cotswolds.
SM: With the impact of social media, what positive & negative impacts do you think it has for future development of the tattoo industry? Deano: It’s definitely benefiting the industry. You are now able to see an artist, go to them and see what can be achieved. This is changing people’s ideas on tattoos.
SM: Do you think tattooing will ever become fully accepted as Art?
‘Everyone that leaves here leaves with a piece of art’
Deano: No, not all art is accepted. A new generation will change the mind set and up the game for others, but not everyone will accept it.
SM: Whats next for TokyoTattoo?
r Taboo
Deano: I am planning on open more TokyoTattoo around the UK maintaining the right location so we continue our luxury brand. Sarah Mckew Fashion Editor

Hilary and Rob of Emmaus Cheltenham
a unique approach to homelessness Tucked down Henrietta Street, behind the Brewery the Emmaus Charity Shop might look like any other, selling furniture, bric a brac and clothing. But did you know that this shop is part of an international movement that has a UNIQUE approach to homelessness? Emmaus Gloucestershire is one of 26 communities in the UK providing homeless people with a place to live and work. The shop in Cheltenham is one of four in Gloucestershire that supports 23 formerly homeless people, called companions. It is UNIQUELY staffed - in return for board and lodging companions give up the right to state benefits and work 40 hours in the shops and furniture warehouse. It is a UNIQUE and successful business run much like a co-operative. All goods are donated and are sold on at low prices with a high turnover of stock. We don’t sell new goods or pay for our stock. The people of Gloucestershire generously give their unwanted goods and larger items are collected free of charge. Emmaus rarely says no to goods offered and we dispose of the things we can’t sell in way that doesn’t damage the environment – last year we saved 415 tonnes from landfill. It is a UNIQUE business and successful business model. In 2011 UK research (Just Economics) forecast a Social Return on investment (SROI) of £11 for every £1 invested. The savings to taxpayers for every companion living and working at Emmaus Gloucestershire is calculated to be £47,442.
We have a UNIQUE way of using the surplus that we generate – we give it to others who need it more than we do. This can be local charities, individual families in need, and international aid projects. Currently we are supporting homelessness services in Gloucestershire and several projects in India. It’s not about the money we generate and the excellent shops we provide in four communities, it is about changing lives. We have believe that in helping others we help ourselves, and that meaningful work restores dignity and inclusion in society. The perception of people who are homeless is that they are a drain on society, but the residents of Emmaus Communities turn this perception on its head. Not only do they work to support themselves, but they also work to help others. The first Emmaus Companion, living with the founder Abbé Pierre in 1948 in France helped to build temporary homes for those in need, first in the priest’s own garden, then wherever land could be bought or scrounged. He later said; “Whatever else he might have given me - money, home, somewhere to work - I’d have still tried to kill myself again. What I was missing, and what he offered, was something to live for.” It’s UNIQUE – but it works! It works because companions work 40 hours a week to make us independent and surplus generating. It works because the people of Cheltenham and Gloucestershire provide us with the goods to sell and come and buy from us. Most importantly it works because we work for others and make a difference to lives home and abroad.

Hollie Gazzard Trust Unfortunately, Hollie was tragically murdered by an ex-Partner on 18 February 2014 while she was working as a hairdresser in her Salon. We wanted something positive to come out of this tragedy so we set up the Hollie Gazzard Trust to help support and fund a young hairdresser in Gloucester each year to enable them to be trained and educated in Hairdressing and to fund their equipment. This was Hollie’s passion and we want to give others the opportunity that Hollie was fortunate to have. The Trust will also be supporting two other local charities, Increase the Peace, a project targeting young individuals away from knife crime and Anti Social Behavior & GDASS (Gloucestershire Domestic Abuse Support Service), helping those who suffer from domestic abuse locally. While we are devastated and can’t change what happened to Hollie, the funds raised will go towards these three worthwhile charities with the intention of helping others. We are in the process of setting up our own website and you can access this by browsing to www.holliegazzard.org. All donation are an important contribution towards the Trust Fund and will go some way towards us achieving our aims in helping others.
