The Cotswolds GATHER TO MEET THE LEGAL

TEAM OF THE REGIONS FIRST BARRISTER’S CHAMBERS Cotswold Barristers officially opened its Cheltenham doors to the business community on the third of July. The chambers were opened by The Hon. Daniel Janner QC and the CEO of the Cotswold Barristers - Carla Morris-Papps as guests were treated to champagne and cocktails from Black Moth Vodka and locally made canapés. Situated on Cheltenham’s Royal Crescent, Cotswold Barristers provides direct access to the public to a barrister without the need for a solicitor, shortening the lines of communication which results in only one lawyer to pay and often bringing faster results. The company will also be charging guaranteed fixed fees getting rid of the

p a ge 16

“egg timer” style of charging by time spent currently associated with legal services. “It was great to have so many of the Cotswolds businesses under our roof”, explained CEO Carla Morris-Papps. “It was a fabulous evening and now our thoughts turn to work and helping those out there win their legal battles. “We have some of the best legal minds within the chambers giving us a wide scope of case work from employment law, criminal and defence prosecution plus regulatory enforcement. For more information on Cotswold Barristers please call 01242 639454 or email clerks@cotswoldbarristers.co.uk.

Interview with Brad Burton About Brad Burton if you have never come across him before: The UK’s #1 MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER. Brad is also the Dynamic MD of 4Networking who run 5,000+ events each year. AUTHOR: 3 hit business books Get Off Your Arse, GEt Off Your Arse Too and Life. Business...Just Got Easier.

Brad covered a number of topics and I will communicate them over to you in machine gun fashion : Steve: Why start your own business? Brad: Less Money...and More Stress is the Reality. But you have the freedom to pick up the kids from school and go to the duck pond when you want to which was massive to me. 2014 is a great time to start a business with opportunities at every corner but with the reality that it is incredibly tough out there but No Self Employed person is starving to death out there. S: How did you get through those early years in business ? B: I almost quit 4Networking several times, I was as close to quitting as you possibly can get like 99% but the only reason I didn’t was because I had No Plan B...I had to make 4Networking work... I started 4Networking at the time to get appointments for my marketing business 4Consultancy...if you are in business you need appointments too. Sometimes I think that having no money at the start kept me sharp and innovative as I had to get appointments or the mortgage wasn’t getting paid.

p a ge 18

S: Brad what tips would you give any new business starting out ? B: Bang...right 4 tips 1) Ensure that you love the business you are in as when the going gets tough you need to have that passion 2) The reality is It will take 4 times longer to make a success of your business than what is in your business plan, prepare for it and accept it 3) Rely on yourself to make things happen, but surround yourself with good people who have skills that you don’t possess. But it is up to you to drive the business 4) Spend 100% of your time being 100% on being yourself...heres an example: I was at a business show in my normal clothes..T shirt, Jeans and trainers and this business speaker guy told me that I would never get anywhere on the speakers circuit looking like how I do. Well...I don’t see this guy getting asked to Headline The Business Show in London and working with massive companies like JCB....I speak from the heart and stay true to who I am...worked out ok so far.

S: What motivates you now considering the success you have had both with 4Networking, Speaking & Business Books? B: Making a Positive Difference...I am going to do some speaking at Dartmoor Prison so if I can help show there is another way. I am quite realistic that if I would of made different choices when I was younger it could be me in there as growing up in Salford Manchester was tough and at times I lost my way.. unemployed for periods..but I always wanted to make a difference. I love working on my speaking and that is a real passion for me, I purposely don’t watch other speakers as I don’t want it to influence my style. S: So what is a normal day for you now? B: I still get along to 4Networking meetings about 4 a month I was doing 3 a week before Christmas but with both Steff Thomas and Terry Cooper onboard with me it does run itself to a degree, attend business events, mentor some people..but time is a factor. S: You spoken before about having a breakdown a few years ago, are you ok to talk about that? B: Yeah sure...Sometimes in life you end up making bad decisions and I was making bad decisions in both personal and business especially if you run a business your personal and business life are the same thing..you don’t clock off at 5:30 in self employed world. So I made a few bad calls you end up drinking more, trying to mask the issues and boom you end up having a breakdown. What I learnt from the whole thing was..Never to confuse Bad Luck with Bad Decisions.

S: What are your future plans now Brad? B: Too take 4Networking globally, we are now in Australia so it will happen...but not with me at the helm my focus is now on other areas and I am surrounded my a great team I am also in the middle of writing my forth book called Next it will be full of short stories to give insight and inspire business owners. Do more speaking gigs I love it, I have done The Business Show for six years now and the JCB gigs are brilliant. S: Thanks Brad for your thoughts, anything else you would like to add. B: At the beginning when I started 4Networking I needed a fight to keep me going and that adversity built the result of the business today. But now it is different 4Networking is the establishment so it vital that we keep things fresh. Come along to The Business Networking Show at Wolverhampton Racecourse on 19th September, tickets are available online.. it will be a great show. Ohhhh yes....A Daft idea is only a daft idea if they don’t work

Thank you Brad...You can Connect with Brad on Twitter @BradBurton and on website http://bradburton.biz/

Hilary and Rob of Emmaus Cheltenham

a unique approach to homelessness Tucked down Henrietta Street, behind the Brewery the Emmaus Charity Shop might look like any other, selling furniture, bric a brac and clothing. But did you know that this shop is part of an international movement that has a UNIQUE approach to homelessness?

We have a UNIQUE way of using the surplus that we generate – we give it to others who need it more than we do. This can be local charities, individual families in need, and international aid projects. Currently we are supporting homelessness services in Gloucestershire and several projects in India.

Emmaus Gloucestershire is one of 26 communities in the UK providing homeless people with a place to live and work. The shop in Cheltenham is one of four in Gloucestershire that supports 23 formerly homeless people, called companions. It is UNIQUELY staffed - in return for board and lodging companions give up the right to state benefits and work 40 hours in the shops and furniture warehouse. It is a UNIQUE and successful business run much like a co-operative. All goods are donated and are sold on at low prices with a high turnover of stock. We don’t sell new goods or pay for our stock. The people of Gloucestershire generously give their unwanted goods and larger items are collected free of charge. Emmaus rarely says no to goods offered and we dispose of the things we can’t sell in way that doesn’t damage the environment – last year we saved 415 tonnes from landfill. It is a UNIQUE business and successful business model. In 2011 UK research (Just Economics) forecast a Social Return on investment (SROI) of £11 for every £1 invested. The savings to taxpayers for every companion living and working at Emmaus Gloucestershire is calculated to be £47,442.

It’s not about the money we generate and the excellent shops we provide in four communities, it is about changing lives. We have believe that in helping others we help ourselves, and that meaningful work restores dignity and inclusion in society. The perception of people who are homeless is that they are a drain on society, but the residents of Emmaus Communities turn this perception on its head. Not only do they work to support themselves, but they also work to help others. The first Emmaus Companion, living with the founder Abbé Pierre in 1948 in France helped to build temporary homes for those in need, first in the priest’s own garden, then wherever land could be bought or scrounged. He later said; “Whatever else he might have given me - money, home, somewhere to work - I’d have still tried to kill myself again. What I was missing, and what he offered, was something to live for.” It’s UNIQUE – but it works! It works because companions work 40 hours a week to make us independent and surplus generating. It works because the people of Cheltenham and Gloucestershire provide us with the goods to sell and come and buy from us. Most importantly it works because we work for others and make a difference to lives home and abroad.

interview with sophie lydia smith miss chetlenham

Surveying the future Steve: Hi Sophie great to meet you and your Mum/PA Sonia, can you explain to our readers about your how you progressed to your current job? Sophie: Currently I work in Tenant Services for Stroud District Council heading up the Repairs & Maintenance department, I started my career in a Building Control Apprenticeship which was a four year process. I have a strong work ethic, starting a Part Time at only 12 years of age and then did my A Levels at Cirencester College. I come from a family dedicated to working hard. My Mum Sonia was with a major bank for a number of years and was a Manager at Stroud College, Dad Chris runs a successful picture framing business based in Cirencester and has framed for many exhibitions in London galleries and Museums around the country as well as local boutique hotels and eateries. ,My sister Maria works as a Trainee Accountant in a local firm and brother Joshua is a Project Manager in I.T S: So how did you find yourself doing Miss Cheltenham and competing in Miss England ?

p a ge 2 4

Sophie : I had been modelling for a number of years in conjunction with working and studying. Miss Cheltenham looked like a great opportunity for me as I wanted to be a role model for young women in Surveying as I am only 24 myself and feel I can relate well to youngsters. The Miss Cheltenham event started in January with over 50 entrants, which was narrowed down to 15 finalists. I became the winner at the final at the Queens Hotel on 2nd March 14:) As the judges decision was unanimous, I didn’t need to go to the semi- finals but was fast tracked straight to the Miss England final held in June in Torquay. Nationally, the Miss England regional heats had over 22,000 entrants, so I was thrilled to get to the final and ended up coming 17th at my first attempt! S: So what has winning the Miss Cheltenham crown enabled you to do ? Sophie: I love acting as a role model to young women and I help mentor students at Gloucestershire College studying for Construction & Technical Apprenticeships including Engineering & Hairdressing.

and as I am one of a few, I know ladies make brilliant surveyors as I have come across some great ones. I am also working with Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) on a project called Surveying the Future which is designed to help encourage young women into the industry. I have a weekly column in Gloucestershire Echo which gives me the forum to talk about subjects I am passionate about. My sponsors are The Brasserie Group and I typically attend about two events per week as Miss Cheltenham S: Do you do any work with charities ? Sophie: I do a lot of work with the Pied Piper Appeal which winning Miss Cheltenham has meant I have been able to use my title to help promote fundraising events even more. Charity work is a big part of the Miss England ethos and it’s very pleasing to be able to offer my services as an ambassador at local fundraisers and events at no cost to the organisers. My

crown and sash are never too far away in case they’re needed! S: So when you get free time, what do you enjoy doing ? Sophie: I’m really into keeping fit I have a Personal Trainer called Dan Fivey at The Gym in Cheltenham, Dan really makes sure I am in shape at all times and helps me with my diet too. I Love spending time with friends and family S: What are your Future Plans ? Sophie: Well, I have several . I would like to get to the top of my industry, TV Presenting in a niche field like construction is also of great interest to me. I am planning to develop my own property very soon and regarding the future I am pretty fearless The sky’s the limit really. I like to study successful people and find out what qualities and skills they have developed to get to where they are today

Unique says “Best of luck Sophie we think you are a great role model for youngsters and have done amazingly well so far. We think that Miss Cheltenham is just the start for you and we will keep a look out on television for you”

SAVE THE BANKSY!!! Following the excitement of Banksy coming to Cheltenham and giving us one of his Masterpieces….depicting men listening into a phone box on the Fairview Road. We at Unique Cheltenham were as shocked as most of the residents in Cheltenham when boards where placed up around the artwork.

We hope that the Banksy can stay in Cheltenham where it was intended to be.

It seems the owners of the house were going to sell the piece to an American Collector, however due to the building being Grade II listed building the council have a say! A campaign started to save the Banksy raised around £115,000, however the owners are considering a seven figure deal for the piece. This is still not enough for the target given to the campaigners. The future of the Bansky is unknown but with the great support the Cheltenham community has shown, shows how much we want to keep our gift from the elusive Bristolian Artist. We showed our support by signing the Van later named the Vansky placed in way of the boards to stop the artwork from being taken, as did many who fully supported the campaign. Other campaigners added their own artworks and messages to the boards to try and save the piece.

Free Runners Waiting for Ash and Dom outside Starbucks on a Sunny Sunday morning. Im approached by a back flip in the air and a perfect landing in front of me. I will need more than coffee to keep up with these guys. Ash 24 and Dom 24 started free running at the age of 12 whilst at school, after been told by the school to stop it they didn’t start again until they were 19 and Dom was shooting photography for a college project. Following watching Jump Britain they decided to practice and take this up as a hobby, but the hobby turned into lifestyle for them both. So what’s Free Running? Free Running is the art of expressing yourself without limitations of movement. The philosophy behind it is to express yourself fluidly. It was started by Sebastien Foucan who used martial discipline and added acrobatic movements to it. It has become a few international events

such as the Red Bull Art of Motion and used in the popular video game Assassin’s Creed. Now they are teaching in Cheltenham, Stroud and Bristol with an age range of 8 – 46. ‘Kids are always jumping and climbing, it’s natural. But there is more too it’ You will see Ash and Dom between Stroud Rush skate Park and Rush in Bristol. They discovered the Bristol Park and later found it burnt as an act of vandalism, since the rebuilding and the session’s available crime as dropped by 60% in the area. ‘The biggest reward is seeing someone achieve something new’ the guys speak passionately about the community and how Free Running is now a family to them. ‘As its community based, everyone should get involved’ it’s always been about getting people involved and getting the rewards. It’s a chance to release and learn about yourself. You learn from yourself and each other. It’s not all physical it is about friendships.

So what are their sessions like, Ash explains that they can train for 4 hours and meet up with different people and learn 10 new moves in an hour. ‘Come rain or shine, we adapt to the environment. We experience different things and new places give new ideas. It could be a different surface or texture. The architecture can change everything.’ When I ask the guys what is your favourite place in Cheltenham to practice they cant tell

Dom continues to explain that ‘Most of the people involved have had family issues or problems within their lives, with the groups they become family and people start to come out of their shell, you then start to have a different outlook on life.’

me but you will often see them in Montpellier Park around the band stand. So I wonder how to do the locals and the police feel about this? ‘We get on well with the Police, they know that we are respectable and we did shock them because we are polite and make conversation instead of giving them grief as most do’ The police have a good relationship and understand the group and encourage them with their development. The future for Dom and Ash are clear they want to teach in schools and get better awareness. They are starting promo videos to show training and learning. ‘It’s not just all about the performance’ Its not a competitive sport, unfortunately it will be commercial. But have to ensure people don’t lose the passion.’ Sarah Mckew Fashion & Features Editor © Sarah McKew 2014

Remembering Good Times, Accepting Tough Times too: Memory Stones A simple bag of three stones may be a useful way to have a really meaningful conversation with your children and help them to find a way of coping with all sorts of memories. Sometimes it can be hard to find a balance between the difficult memories which are often associated with a death by murder or manslaughter and happier, more positive memories. The three different stones can be used to convey a message in a special and safe way. The smooth pebble feels ordinary and fairly comfortable to hold in your hand. It is there to represent ordinary, everyday memories of the person who died. He always rang the doorbell when he came home from work even though he had a key. She always sang along with the adverts when they came on the TV. The rough rock feels sharp and painful to hold. It is there to represent the memories of difficult and hard times and also memories of the way that the person died. I remember some of the rows we had; we said some hurtful things to each other. When I close my eyes I can still see the picture in my head of how she must have looked. The gemstone looks and feels precious, shiny and polished. It is there to bring back memories of the really special times spent with the person who died. I’ll never forget that day on the beach when he tried to catch the frisbee in his mouth and got a face full of sand. He couldn’t stop laughing. I remember making a birthday cake in the shape of a car with her; it didn’t really look like a car but we thought it was brilliant. The first two stones can usually be found in a garden or park. Gemstones can be found at craft or gift shops. Encourage your children to hold each stone in turn and give examples of memories and events that they could attach to the different stones. You can also share your own. The secret is to try to find a way to hold the three stones in your hand – the rough alongside the precious and the ordinary – and to hold these three types of memories together in a way that they all find their place. The rough becomes no more important than the other two and in time can be described in ways that hurt less. Using this simple bag of stones can help break the conspiracy of silence that sometimes creeps in when tough stuff happens in families. When having a difficult day, the stones can also be a useful way to start a conversation, for example:

Does the rough rock feel particularly sharp today?
