Shifting Perspectives Market House and Square, Providence Graduate Project | Semester : Second Year, Fall ‘20 Typology and Program : Adaptive Reuse - Archive Center
The theme of this studio was to focus on human labor and life through Rhode Island, specifically Market House’s (in Providence) involvement with the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Market House is currently one of Rhode Island School of Design’s administrative and academic building. The main concept of my project was to work with the notion of concealing and revealing to bring out the lost acknowledgment – connection between Market House and the Transatlantic Slave Trade and also the architecture of Market Houses, missing archive – the journey of black bodies from their home land to the New World and historical narrative – use of fabric as a barter currency.

Bottom: Market House has its foundations built on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the cotton trade in Africa has its foundations built on the Slave Trade. But do we see it?
The fabric of the new facade symbolic of the cotton from India used as barter currency in the trade, is a blank facade with openings cut out for the arched entryways and the clock. By adding a new translucent fabric facade, the existing perspective of the building is partially concealed to shed light on its architectural elements. 11
Lost Acknowledgment
Missing Archive
Missing Historical Narrative
These three factors are essentially achieved by proposing a new facade or skin over the existing, proposing the program of an Archive center or library. 12

GRADUATE THESIS
Ritualizing of Space in the 21st Century Fostering of Communal Identity through the Commemoration of Tamil Culture Graduate Thesis | Semester : Second Year, Spring ‘21 Typology and Program : Adaptive Reuse - Public Urban Space
This thesis is a study of how societies with strong existing culture and sacred rituals can dictate the design of spaces inspired by the values rituals bring to life. The adaptive reuse of this space will demonstrate how history, culture and existing traditions can be used as materials to re-engage the public with a historic host structure. Thirumalai Nayakar Palace, a 17th century palace in the South Indian city of Madurai, will be adapted to the new context by spatially incorporating the essence of the existing sacred rituals and bring the community together through the common thread of Tamil Culture. Adapting these spatial cues will help create a space for all visitors that brings the people of Madurai together, creating a center for Tamil Culture through the celebration of the literature and the palace’s architecture itself.

As part of understanding what draws us to rituals, three rituals pertaining to the city of Madurai and connected to the host, were studied. The end result of the analysis were three spatial cues which were then applied to the host structure to better bring out celebration of Tamil Culture. 26

Programmatically the space is divided into three paths The Threshold Path reconnects the urban fabric to the site using vernacular language of Gopuram/gateway and thinnai/verandahs. The Architectural Path is to appreciate the different styles and elements of the existing which as established earlier forms a major part of the culture. Finally, the Epic Path narrates the story of one of the five Tamil Epics through space.

Using our analysis of rituals and understanding what draws people to it spatially, the activity of walking through the story becomes an important aspect of utilizing the host structure. The selected epic is divided into 5 parts. The 5 narratives – Drama, Growth, Intimacy, Encounter and Journey are spatially translated to bring out the experience of the story for visitors.

GRADUATE PROJECT

On the Edge Peddocks Island, Boston Graduate Project | Semester : First Year, Spring ‘20 Typology and Program : Adaptive Reuse and Master Planning - Educational
As part of this studio, we looked at how to address climate change on a master plan level as well as more focused building level on the Peddocks Island. For the purpose of this project, East Head on the island was the main region of focus, which was where the military base of Fort Andrews was situated. More specifically for the Adaptive Reuse strategy, of all the remaining buildings on the island, the Quartermaster Storehouse Building(on the left) was selected. The brief was to develop an educational as well as a recreational program across the master plan and propose a toolkit to establish a narrative on climate change in the island.

This Adaptive Reuse project aimed at bringing out the community and connectivity aspect of a city into the core of Downtown living. The site, an existing car rental building which was a gas station in early 20th century, is situated in the part of Downtown Providence which sees a large commuting population. The program proposed for this project is a Farmer’s Market which will revive public interaction between commuters and other residents in this deserted part of Downtown Providence.

Railway Station Redevelopment Egmore Station, Chennai Year : 2018 Project Stage : Conceptual and Working Drawing Development Scope of Work : Concept and design development, mood board compiling, client presentations, working drawing set - for various rooms of the station.
The client for this project was the Ministry of Railways (Southern Railways). This project was a part of the greater redevelopment plan of the railway stations across India. The site, an early 20th century Gothic Indo Sarcenic Railway Station, Egmore Station is one of the most important southern terminals. The scope of the project was to work on renovation and creation of public amenities. Existing waiting rooms were reworked on to accomodate for more people as well as modern amenities. The unused waiting rooms, platform signanges and amenities, executive lounge, lobby, entry into the platforms were all redesigned. Being a government and public structure, safety, accessibility and inclusivity played a major role in decision making. All new interventions were to be also made inline with the 20th century style of the building which stands as a landmark in the eyes of the public.
