Herbert William Garratt 1864 - 1913 “Don Luiz,” an express passenger locomotive built by Messrs. Beyer, Peacock & Co. for the South Eastern Railway of Portugal (circa 1862). The engine with single driving wheels attracted attention at the Great Exhibition, no less by reason of its aesthetic beauty as by the excellence of the workmanship and the sound mechanical instinct shown in its construction. This locomotive had a working life of over 64 years. 1
