Nogales located on an ancient travel and trade route leading to the Gulf of California

Gadsden Purchase divides the city of Ambos Noglaes

Jacob Issacson builds the first trading post North of border and Juan Jose Vasquez South of the border

I-19 increases N-S transportation and commerce between the U.S. and Mexico

Achison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railways establish domestic and international railways in Nogales

Historical research informs the design process 1. Nogales originated as an important stop along ancient trade routes. 2. In 1854 the city was divided into two sister cities seen today. 3. Over 200 years of shared history keep the cities linked.

Ecological research adds value to the design process 1. Wetlands are rare within desert communities. 2. Native species can be promoted in wetlands, while invasives can be removed. 3. Expanding native species’ habitat can promote the site as a regional attraction. 100’

graphic biomimicry

An exploration in planting design referencing fine art and native species • This rendering explores a stylized planting design. • The composition mimics the colors and forms of Sam Wolcott’s painting through overhead structures, planting design, and paving patterns. • The style conveys the sentiment of the design as an alternative to perspective rendering.
