BUSINESS ETIQUETTE ESSENTIAL FOR ECONOMIC EMERGENCE Business etiquette is important for Jamaica to sustain the gains in economic growth made in recent years, according to Metry Seaga, President of the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica (PSOJ). How people treat each other in doing business can determine the levels of investment the country attracts in the long term. Speaking at the opening of the Business and Personal Etiquette (BPE) Conference staged by the consulting firm, Make Your Mark Group (MYMG), Mr. Seaga said that Jamaica is experiencing a lack of common decency, respect, and ethical conduct, which has threatened to undo the economic gains we’ve made. He challenged participants to “make Jamaica not just economically robust but also socially and morally resilient!” “Business etiquette is the very cornerstone on which enduring relationships are built. If we can’t treat each other with respect, how can we expect to build lasting business relationships, attract longterm investments or even gain the trust of our citizens?” Seaga asked at the event, held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Wednesday, November 1. “We have the power to demonstrate that ethical behavior and social responsibilities are not merely options, but essential for sustained economic growth. When we treat each other with dignity, we not only pave the way for lasting business relationships but also cultivate a society that lives by the values of fairness, respect, and ethical integrity,” he added.
BUSINESS
Seaga said the PSOJ was playing its role in integrating the fundamentals of business etiquette through Project STAR, the social and economic transformation project being run by the PSOJ with input from several stakeholders. Also speaking at the conference, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education and Youth, the Honourable Marsha Smith, urged the participants to “embrace continuous learning and develop a growth mindset that encourages curiosity and a thirst for knowledge.” “Lead by example and demonstrate the behavior you expect from others,” Smith said, adding that “displaying resilience, creativity, and a positive attitude would inspire others to embrace change.” “It is in recognition of the imperative of meaningful change that the Ministry of Education and Youth has embarked on the Transformation in Education for National Development (TREND) programme that targets governance, leadership, training, modernizing operations and focusing on STEM education among other areas,” Minister of State Smith said.
MAKE LOCAL WORKFORCE UPSKILLING A PRIORITY The Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) has emphasized the crucial importance of prioritizing the upskilling of local employees, including those within the burgeoning business process outsourcing (BPO) sector. Dr. Wayne Henry, the Director General of PIOJ, has put forward this suggestion in response to ongoing discussions surrounding the potential recruitment of migrant workers to address labor shortages in certain industries. Dr. Henry acknowledges that meaningful dialogues are currently underway regarding the development and upskilling of local workers. He noted that several initiatives and programs are already in motion, primarily within the tourism and BPO sectors. These initiatives aim to provide comprehensive training and certification opportunities within the labor market. To reinforce his perspective, Dr. Henry recommends an intensified focus on these ongoing training and certification initiatives.

ANOTHER MEGA-RESORT FOR JAMAICA! Lopesan, a major international hotel group, is seeking to develop a 1,000-room luxury resort on the island. Lopesan has over 17,000 hotel rooms across Europe, Asia and the Caribbean. On Tuesday, executives from the hotel group called on Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett and his team at the World Travel Market in London, United Kingdom, including Chairman of the Jamaica Tourist Board, John Lynch, and Senior Advisor and Strategist in the Ministry of Tourism, Delano Seiveright. Lopesan’s team was led by CEO Francisco Lopez and the Director General of the hotel’s division, Jose Alba. Bartlett expressed appreciation for the group’s strong investment push and noted that the development would generate over 2,500 direct and indirect jobs and positively impact scores of farmers, manufacturers, small businesses, and other stakeholders. The news comes as the tourism sector prepares for the official opening of the recent US$30 million renovated Royalton White Sands resort in Trelawny next month. The sector is also preparing for the openings of two major resorts before summer next year the first phase 1,000 rooms of the new Princess Resort in Hanover and over 753-room new RIU Palace Aquarelle resort in Trelawny, creating around 2,500 new jobs. The World Travel Market in London, one of the largest tourism trade shows, facilitates £2.8 billion in industry deals and has around 5,000 exhibitors from 182 countries and regions and more than 51,000 participants.

CHEAP LABOUR DESTINATION? Prime Minster Andrew Holness says a highly productivity labour force is a key factor that will attract investors to Jamaica. He also highlighted that a stable economy, stable exchange rate, political stability, the access to labour as other factors that will lure investments to the Jamaican shores. "The biggest attraction for a country like Jamaica, aside from the things that I have just mentioned, would be that we make that a feature of our labour force, that someone who has many options to go and invest and say, "you know what, I want to come to Jamaica because Jamaica displays a high level of productivity. It doesn't matter what I pay them if I have to pay them higher than everybody else because their productivity is high." So, we don't want to be a cheap labour destination. We want to be a high-productivity labour destination," Holness said. He argued to get to that high productivity, "we have to do far more than we're doing now in investing in education.” "It is not going to be overnight. But to get to that high productivity, what we are teaching and training in schools now is not going to be enough," he said. He was speaking at the grand opening of the Barnett Business Centre in Montego Bay, St James. The Barnett Business Centre was conceptualized by Montego Bay businessman Mark Kerr-Jarrett. Kerr-Jarrett suggested that in the short term, fully trained employees should be sourced through the long-touted Public Sector Transformation Programme for the productive sector. “I have an appeal to make and that is that our greatest challenge in all aspects of the private sector growth is the availability of quality human resources. The medium to longterm solution will, without a doubt, require a total reformation of the educational system, and this will take time, but I would like to throw out a suggestion made years ago, that the fastest way to free up trained and experienced human resources is through the public sector reform programme,” Kerr Jarrett said.

JAMAICA RANKS 3RD IN SALARIES... 1/2 A survey done this year with data collected from 117 companies in 15 Caribbean countries revealed that Barbados had the most significant percentage of companies paying salaries above market value. In contrast, St Vincent and the Grenadines had the most important rate of companies paying below market value. The Caribbean Salary Survey Report: PayPulse 2023, conducted by the Caribbean Society for Human Resource Professionals (CSHRP), said 53.3% of jobs surveyed in Barbados surpassed market value. According to the PayPulse 2023 findings, Antigua and Barbuda claimed the second spot with 16.7% of jobs paying above market value, while Jamaica placed third with 13.3%. At the bottom of the table is St Vincent and the Grenadines, with 73.3% of salaries falling below the average market value across the region, according to the survey. The survey, according to CSHRP, stands as the most comprehensive and current resource in the region, highlighting 30 distinct job titles across 26 diverse industries in 15 countries. The 2023 report also builds upon insights gained from the 2022 report, which captures data from over 200 companies across 22 Caribbean countries. Speaking at the launch of the survey on November 22, Rochelle James, CEO of CSHRP, highlighted the importance of having regional data. "In the region, when officials speak, they often tell us about surveys conducted in the US or the UK, which has very little relevance to us; we need our own data to tell our stories effectively," James said at the launch held at the Exim Bank Conference Room in Kingston. She further announced the commitment to conduct the survey annually for release every November. The PayPulse 2023 report is a collaborative effort involving 117 companies among 30 job titles in 26 industries across 15 countries. Kim Isava, General Manager of CaribbeanJobs.com, a partner with CSHRP, shared the impact of the survey on both employers and job seekers and the importance of salary information in the recruitment industry.

JAMAICA RANKS 3RD IN SALARIES... 2/2 She said her company is inundated daily by job seekers asking why salaries are not disclosed in job ads. “It’s a highly competitive environment now. If you (the employer) want that top talent, job seekers are going to bypass your ad if they don’t know what the compensation package is,” Isava said. Meanwhile, Kimberly Largie, Lead Researcher for the PayPulse 2023 report, noted that data was received from 81 disclosed companies, with 29 companies opting not to disclose their names. She said 36 were regional companies operating in more than one Caribbean territory. The top three companies represented in the survey were Jamaica, Antigua, Barbuda, and Barbados. Largie also identified financial analysts and middle-management positions as the most challenging roles for employers to fill outside of the C-suite. “The survey offers valuable insights into salary trends, recruitment challenges, and industry-specific nuances in the Caribbean. These findings not only empower organizations to make informed decisions but to contribute to the ongoing transformation of the Caribbean professional landscape,” Largie said. The full report is available for purchase at CSHRP’s website at a cost of US$500. CSHRP aims to address talent challenges in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean through research, education, and collaboration.

QR CODE SCAMS AT ABMS National Commercial Bank Jamaica Limited (NCB) is alerting its customers to be vigilant against a new type of "phishing" scam targeting Automated Banking Machine (ABM) users. Phishing is a fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information, often through deceptive emails, messages, or in this case, QR codes, posing as a trustworthy entity. Fraudsters have been mounting posters inside NCB ABMs with a QR code, claiming that customers can win over $1 million in cash and prizes by clicking on the link. Unwitting customers who scan these codes are misled into providing their private banking information, such as their PIN and Internet banking login details, which scammers then exploit to access accounts and misappropriate funds. "We are deeply concerned about this new deceptive tactic and its potential impact on our customers," stated Dane Nicholson, Head of Fraud Prevention at NCB. "It's essential for everyone to remember that NCB will never send unsolicited links or ask customers to share their private banking details outside of our secure banking platforms. Fraudsters continue to be extremely creative in their tactics, so we urge customers to stop and think before they click on links, scan QR codes, or give out any personal or banking details." This latest incident underscores that scammers employ various tactics, including sending deceptive SMS messages, crafting urgent or 'warning' emails, and other methods designed to instil fear or urgency in the recipient. These tactics are meant to rush individuals into making hasty decisions without verifying the authenticity of the request. Customers are urged to be cautious and avoid clicking on links or scanning QR codes that lead to websites requesting banking information. NCB also encourages customers to report any suspicious activity or questionable materials found inside or near ABMs. Nicholson further stressed: "Our top priority is the safety and security of our customers' money. We are working closely with local law enforcement to address this issue and bring these fraudsters to justice." Nicholson added: “As always, NCB reminds its customers to keep their banking details confidential. If there is ever a doubt about the legitimacy of any communication received claiming to be from NCB, customers are encouraged to contact the Bank directly at 888-NCB-FIRST (622-3477) or email reportphishing@jncb.com.

JAMAICA REPORTS MORE CASES OF CYBER ATTACKS Cyber security consultant Gavin Dennis has shed light on a concerning trend in Jamaica, where a significant number of cyber attacks remain undisclosed to the public. In an interview with Radio Jamaica News on Monday, Dennis emphasized the alarming frequency of local data breaches, urging greater awareness of the issue. Recent data breaches raise concerns. Reports are that over the weekend, disturbing revelations emerged as e-commerce platforms ShopCourts.com and PriceSmart became the latest victims of data breaches. Mr. Dennis underscored the gravity of these incidents, emphasizing their impact on both individuals and businesses in the region. A DISTURBING WEEKLY TREND Dennis disclosed that the situation is far from isolated, stating that at least every week, some other entity is being compromised. He noted that while some incidents make it to the media, many remain private. He added that in such cases, people turn to companies and individuals like him for assistance in resolving the cyber threats they face. THE CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF CRIME Highlighting the evolving nature of criminal activities, Dennis drew attention to the reduced physical risks associated with cybercrime compared to traditional forms of criminal behavior. He explained that Cyber crime is something that does pay, adding that it is very lucrative for a lot of criminals. He further shared that it also has less physical risk, noting that there is also a significantly lower risk of them being caught and going to prison or facing physical harm due to altercations with the police out on the street. SHOPCOURTS DATA BREACH EXPOSES VULNERABILITIES. On Sunday, Dennis shared on X, formally Twitter, the troubling incident related to the ShopCourts data breach. He shared that hackers claimed to have stolen data on up to 200,000 orders from the ShopCourts website. Reports are that these cybercriminals leaked a sample of customer records from 2013 to 2023, impacting multiple Caribbean countries, including Jamaica. Dennis shared that access to the data from the ShopCourts website is being sold online and was published on August 29 this year. PRICESMART FALLS VICTIM TO HACKERS. Dennis further revealed that AlphV hackers, also known as Black Cat, announced the theft of over 500 gigabytes of sensitive data about both customers and employees of PriceSmart. This revelation follows the group’s earlier admission of responsibility for a high-profile hack at Derrimon Trading, further underscoring the growing threat of cyber attacks in the region. Reports are that this is the same group that claimed responsibility for the hack at Derrimon Trading.

JAMAICANS URGED TO DO REGULAR SCREENINGS... 1/2 Jamaicans are urged to take charge of their well-being and make regular check-ups a vital part of their routine in light of the increasing incidents of lifestyle-related ailments. The call comes amidst a growing concern that many Jamaicans are unaware of their health status and are walking around with ailments such as diabetes and hypertension, making themselves susceptible to hospitalization or even death. In a public awareness campaign dubbed ‘Know Your Numbers,’ the Ministry of Health and Wellness has earmarked some 500,000 screening tests for the 2023/2024 fiscal year to provide Jamaicans with the opportunity to know what they are vulnerable to and what they need to do to correct this through lifestyle changes. “In response to lifestyle diseases and premature mortality, the Ministry has introduced the ‘Know Your Numbers’ campaign to encourage yearly health screening and reduce illness among the population,” Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton said following a recent visit to Falmouth, Trelawny. The Minister repeated the call in a visit to Junction, St Elizabeth on November 24, revealing that during the visit by the health team to Falmouth, where 1,600 people were examined, 450 did multiple tests for non-communicable diseases, and 100 of them had to be referred to a medical doctor for follow-up examinations. "What it meant in practical terms is that there were people there who didn't know they had diabetes and found out. There were people who didn't know they were hypertensive, and they found out. They probably wouldn't know until they got a stroke or a heart attack and ended up in the Accident & Emergency Ward, which is why this programme was created. A 30% pickup above normality in a population is alarmingly scary," the minister argued. "It means that probably 20 - 30% of us are walking around just on the cusp of a catastrophe. And where do you end up? In the hospital. So, we have to promote screening as we are doing now through ‘Know Your Numbers.’" The Minister said that the reality is that too many Jamaicans are “walking sick people” because they do not know their health status. The Ministry’s target is to get 500,000 screening tests done by next year, adding that “to achieve this, we intend to bolster offerings of health checks and promote health screening in our hospitals and clinics across the country.”
HEALTH
JAMAICANS URGED TO DO REGULAR SCREENINGS... 2/2 “Screening will become a routine operating procedure through our Primary Reform Programme, particularly our Life-Stage approach. This means, once you enter a facility for any concern or examination, you will be provided with a health screening,” Dr Tufton added. Tufton said that knowing one's numbers for essential health indicators, such as blood pressure and blood sugar levels, is crucial for Jamaicans to lead healthier lives and combat the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), adding that by empowering individuals through public awareness campaigns, the Ministry intends to support Jamaicans in taking control of their health and making informed decisions. He noted that strengthening healthcare systems and prioritizing preventive measures will contribute to a healthier, more prosperous nation. “With a collective effort, Jamaicans can give themselves a fighting chance at a longer, healthier, and more enjoyable life,” Tufton said. He pointed out that through the Regional Health Authorities, the Ministry will repurpose its COVID-19 mobile units to offer mobile screening services across the island, including through community outreach programmes. “Increased efforts will be made to target the most vulnerable among the population, such as people living in remote, difficult, underserved, and unreached areas. We aim to assess and provide management for illnesses,” the Minister further said. Adding that core services to be offered include screening for body mass index, hypertension, diabetes, vision, cholesterol, and HIV/Syphilis. “Expanded services will include ECG, prostate cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer, colorectal cancer, dementia and frailty, and immunization. In addition to clinics and health centres, we will be taking screening activities to you in your place of work, play, and communities. Mobile health clinics will be deployed to each parish. Our primary healthcare professionals will partner with community leaders and civic groups such as churches, schools, corporate offices, Members of Parliament, and community-based associations. We will take screening to you and encourage you to get screened, as this could save your life,” he concluded.

NHF ADDS FIVE NEW HEALTH CONDITIONS TO CARD PROGRAMME To further cushion the cost persons have to pay for prescription drugs, the National Health Fund (NHF) has added five (5) new health conditions to its NHF Card Programme. Beginning Tuesday, October 24, the Agency’s card programme is providing increased support for Colorectal Cancer, Lung Cancer, Multiple Myeloma, Parkinson’s Disease, and Thyroid Disease. “This represents an estimated $450 million in additional subsidy and will see some 47,000 Jamaicans benefitting from this programme,” said Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton. He spoke during a press conference on October 24 at the Spanish Court Hotel in New Kingston, where the increased support was announced. The NHF provides, through its Individual Benefits Programme, subsidies for three main categories of benefits for Jamaican residents enrolled in the programme, where they obtain medications to treat and manage 17 chronic diseases, medical supplies and devices for diabetes and asthma, and diagnostic tests for three conditions. More than 350,000 persons actively rely on the programme for care. The additional benefits resulted from beneficiaries’ feedback after the NHF embarked on a review. With the addition of the five conditions, ten (10) new active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) are now available to the NHF to provide coverage for persons under the Benefits Programme. Meanwhile, Dr. Tufton noted that cancer is a major health concern in Jamaica and that screening must become a norm for the population. He pointed out that among the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), the illness is the second leading cause of death in Jamaica. “We have to get Jamaicans to recognize that… going to the doctor to get a ‘check-up’ is not to be feared. It is supposed to be viewed as a lifesaving activity because early detection means longevity,” the Minister said. The National Health Fund is an agency of the Ministry of Health and Wellness, established in 2003 by the National Health Fund Act. It provides financial support to the national healthcare system to improve its effectiveness and the affordability of healthcare for the Jamaican population.

CYBER-ATTACKS! IN TODAY'S DIGITAL AGE, BUSINESSES OF ALL SIZES ARE INCREASINGLY VULNERABLE TO CYBER-ATTACKS. THESE ATTACKS CAN RESULT IN SIGNIFICANT FINANCIAL LOSSES, DAMAGE TO A BUSINESS'S REPUTATION, AND THE LOSS OF VALUABLE CUSTOMER DATA. THEREFORE, BUSINESSES MUST TAKE PROACTIVE STEPS TO PROTECT THEMSELVES.
DEVELOP A CYBERSECURITY PLAN The first step in protecting your business from cyber-attacks is to develop a robust cybersecurity plan. This plan should outline your business’s approach to cybersecurity, including the measures you will take to prevent attacks, how you will respond if an attack occurs, and how you will recover. REGULARLY UPDATE SYSTEMS AND SOFTWARE Many cyber-attacks exploit vulnerabilities in outdated systems and software. Regularly updating your systems, software, and applications can help close these vulnerabilities and make it more difficult for cybercriminals to access your network. EDUCATE EMPLOYEES Employees can often be a weak link in your cybersecurity defenses, mainly if they are unaware of the risks. Regular training for your employees can help them understand the importance of cybersecurity and the steps they can take to help protect your business. IMPLEMENT STRONG PASSWORD POLICIES Weak passwords can provide cybercriminals with an easy way to access your systems. Implementing strong password policies and encouraging the use of password managers can help keep your systems secure. UTILIZE TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION (2FA) Another key measure to enhance your business's cybersecurity is the implementation of two-factor authentication (2FA). 2FA requires users to provide two types of identification before accessing your systems. This usually involves something the user knows (like a password) and something the user possesses (like a code sent to their mobile device). By implementing 2FA, even if a cybercriminal obtains a user's password, they would still need the second form of identification, significantly reducing the probability of a successful cyberattack. Using 2FA for all systems that hold sensitive data, including email accounts, financial systems, and customer databases, is recommended. INVEST IN CYBERSECURITY TOOLS There is a wide range of tools available that can help to protect your business from cyberattacks. These include antivirus software, firewalls, and intrusion detection systems. Investing in these tools can provide additional protection for your company. BY TAKING THESE STEPS, BUSINESSES CAN SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THEIR RISK OF FALLING VICTIM TO CYBER-ATTACKS.

BANKS INCREASING SECURITY MEASURES TO PROTECT CUSTOMERS... 1/2 Amidst the rise in social engineering and other cyber threats, several commercial banks have implemented new procedures and tools to limit the risk posed to customers in the rapidly evolving digital age. The latest commercial bank to enact a change is JN Bank Limited. As of November 4, personal customers will be required to login to the online banking platform JN Live and verify themselves with two-factor authentication (2FA) using the Google Authenticator app. Currently, users select a security image and answer a security question to login to the platform, along with entering a transaction password for certain transactions. This will no longer be the case once the changeover takes place. The 2FA will be required when adding transfer recipients, transferring funds to other bank accounts and wire transfers, mobile phone top-up, and setting up new bill payments. As a result, JN Bank has reminded customers that they must ensure that the mobile number on file is current. The 2FA usually involves a one-time passcode (OTP) or forms of evidence like biometrics via an authentication mechanism to verify a user before a login or transaction is authorized. National Commercial Bank Jamaica Limited (NCBJ) introduced 2FA in June 2017 with a 'hard' RSA token with a physical device or a 'soft' token via a mobile application. First Global Bank Limited (FGB) introduced 2FA methods in March 2010, further enhanced by a 'soft' token with the Entrust Identity Guard app. Other commercial banks have solutions such as requiring users to input an OTP received via e-mail or using biometrics with their mobile device to verify a device that hasn't been saved as 'trusted.’ Certain transactions above a specific amount also require using security questions, pins, and OTP codes to limit loss for customers. While these measures work to protect customers from cyber threats, the rise of phishing and smishing has pushed NCBJ to take extreme measures by temporarily suspending SMS transaction alerts on October 13. Both practices involve an external party sending e-mail and text messages purporting to be the institution or person of trust and deceiving them into clicking a link or providing sensitive information that can be used to impact their personal lives negatively. NCBJ has always maintained a 'no link' policy via e-mail or text messages, but some clients have fallen victim to the deception and have been left in a compromised financial state. NCBJ's policy does not require personal or financial information like passwords, pins, or CVV (card verification value) via text messages, e-mail, or telephone calls.

BANKS INCREASING SECURITY MEASURES TO PROTECT CUSTOMERS... 2/2 "In keeping with global trends since the COVID-19 pandemic, financial institutions have seen an increase in cyber-attacks via phishing, smishing, vishing, BIN/Brute Force attacks, website spoofing, and other social engineering scams. However, we have been able to thwart numerous attempts and avert what could otherwise be significant losses. Notwithstanding, we are committed to continue being alert to these cybersecurity attacks and to continue to review and revise our strategies to ensure they are effective," said NCBJ's Head of Fraud Prevention, Dane Nicholson, in a recent e-mail. BIN or bank identification numbers are the first six digits on a debit or credit card. BIN attacks involve software trying thousands of combinations to guess the full card number and other details needed for a card transaction. Once the transaction has failed, customers receive a declined transaction alert via text or e-mail. Back in May, JMMB Bank (Jamaica) Limited and FGB customers received declined transaction alerts despite not placing any transactions. Both banks communicated to clients about the alerts and how their systems worked well to block the attempts and reminded them that multiple security measures were in place to protect customers. Since then, FGB rolled out the CVVKEY app on July 27, which provides temporary CVV numbers for online transactions and replaces the static numbers on the back of cards. The CVV number is a crucial code needed to execute transactions.
"The app is straightforward to use; you simply download and open it to access a temporary CVV code for online purchases when prompted. This streamlined process enhances the customer experience while fortifying our robust security protocols. We are thrilled about this innovation because it encapsulates what First Global Bank stands for - being ahead of the curve, not just following it," said FGB's Head of E-Payments, Jermaine Blissett, in an advertisement. Banks have also shifted to not requiring card readers to use access ATMs (automated teller machines) but simply pressing a button. Even FirstCaribbean International Bank (Jamaica) Limited has introduced a contactless recognition tool at some branch ATMs, allowing users to 'tap' their card next to the device for the door to open. The posture towards risk in the financial sector has been further heightened following the events at Stocks and Securities Limited. Different securities dealers have upgraded their systems to ensure customers are aware of any transaction or cash movement and have made further changes to handling requests via email. "During 2022, the financial sector increased its use of technology to cater to changes in customer needs. However, the expanded use of technology for financial services has heightened the risk of cybercrimes and fraud in the local and global economies. In the future, the bank and local DTIs must be proactive in safeguarding the integrity of digital assets and customer information by adapting new regulations to maintain bestpractice industry standards," said the Bank of Jamaica's 2022 annual report.
