- Jack Stallard, Sports Editor, Longview News-JournalWhat began as an idea to honor true student-athletes has grown into one of the premier events and mostanticipated evenings in East Texas.
WHAT HIS COACH SAID
Jax Norman is a threeyear varsity starter on the offensive line for Longview High School. He was Padilla Poll 5A Division 1 first team All-State, 1st Team AllDistrict and 1st Team Academic All-State. He was voted by his peers as a Permanent Team Captain for the 2022 football team. He was a great leader for our football program and an outstanding young man and player.
WHAT HER COACH SAID
Abby was the captain of the Spring Hill Volleyball team this year. She was the reason that we made it to the regional finals this year. Abby was named an all-state volleyball player but her leadership was the real value for our team.
Abby would organize extra events, hold peers accountable, motivate teammates, and even scout opponents.
I am happy and honored to recommend Malachi Gray for this award. I have known Malachi for five years and it has been my pleasure to serve as his cross country coach. During this time, I watched Malachi grow into an outstanding young man who excels in both his academic and athletic pursuits. As Malachi’s coach, I witnessed his work ethic and diligence to excel in academics and athletics daily. Academically, he ranks 111 out of 305 students and his GPA is 3.351. All of this while being in multiple activities and he is always the first to arrive and the last to leave. His diligence in his studies and to his teammates will make him a great addition for this award.
WHAT HER COACH SAID Kipton is a true leader in and out of the classroom.
Top 10 in her class academically. Gives of herself in a selfless manner to help anyone in need. Gives 100% in three sports. No one is more deserving of this award than this young lady.

WHAT HIS COACH SAID
Cooper is a very unusual young man for these times. He seems to know what he wants and is willing to make plans and put in work to acheive those things. We do not normally play freshman on varsity, but due to his maturity level, I believe he needed to be stressed by the level of competition in order to get any better. He had a phenomenal year for us at the shooting guard position, starting part of the season averaging nine points a game and providing essential leadership from a verbal and example standpoint. Our team has a lot of respect for this young man. He helped lead us to the District 16-3A championship while always maintaining a positive attitude and hardworking example. We look forward to the next three years of watching such an incredible young man.

WHAT HER COACH SAID
Makenna doesn’t just talk the talk, she walks the walk. A walk of faith and excellence. She has stayed true to herself no matter the peer pressure or critisim. The walk of a Christian is not easy, especially for a teenager.
I have so much respect for this young lady. She makes me and everyone around her a better human. I am so blessed to have been part of her life. She is also a phenomenal basketball player. She will continue her basketball career at ETBU.

WHAT HIS COACH SAID
Gavyn is a great person on and off the field. He is a leader on the baseball team, and an exceptional athlete who is committed to Texas Tech in the fall as a lefthanded pitcher and hitter. He is also a great student, maintaining straight A’s in the classroom
Piper Morton is both my daughter and my leader on the softball field. I have been at West Rusk for 15 years, and I have not seen a young lady have as much positive impact on her teammates as Piper has.
Piper played volleyball, basketball, and softball throughout high school and excelled in each one earning all-district, all-East Texas, and allstate in every one. However, when it comes to softball she stands head and shoulders above the rest. Piper leads her team both quietly and non-quietly, in ways you would have to see to believe. The thing I am most proud of is the drama-free environment that we have on the team, and Piper is the reason for that. She gets along with everyone and helps anyone that needs it. I find it comforting to have a player that my other players can come to in a time of need. As a coach and a father, I have been blessed to have coachable daughters. This has made my job as a coach and a daddy much easier.

Averi currently is serving as Captain of the Pine Tree Precision Drill Team. Not only is she highly respected by her peers, she is incredibly organized, responsible, dependable, hard working, kind, and empathetic to all. I have full trust in her to keeping practice running if I need to step away for a moment. She arrives early to our 7 a.m. practices everyday to assist others who have questions or need additional help. Even as the captain, Averi continues to work hard to achieve new things. After practice, she stays behind to work on her skills in an effort to continuously improve. Averi is one of two team members who have zero demerits. This is great accomplishment on our team.
WHAT HIS COACH SAID Matthew is an awesome young man, a good student and excellent athlete. He is a leader in his school and community. He is well spoken and well thought of by his teachers and peers. If every student athlete took care of their business like Matthew does, schools would operate without issue.

WHAT HER COACH SAID
Emma has always worked very hard to be the best she can be. This includes the classroom, in sports and in life. She is always the last one to leave the discus ring. She practices every weekend on her own time. On her own initiative she started throwing the Javelin. She qualified for the Jr. Olympics this past summer. During this track season she has gone to Louisiana on her own to compete in Javelin. More than anything she lives by example in the school. She will be vocal and let another student know when they are making a wrong choice.
WHAT HIS COACH SAID
Once in a while you come across a student athlete that is well self-managed. Gersain loves to serve others outside the field, and was willing to serve his team by playing any position without hesitation knowing it would be for the benefit of the team.
He is not only hardworking on the field, but he applies his intensity to be the best in the classroom as well.
Top three in his class as a senior demonstrates that.
I’m proud to nominate Gersain as a Best Preps nominee.
Emma is an excellent team player. She was voted captain by her teammates and is an amazing leader on and off the field. She is our field general and keeps the girls organized throughout the game. She took it on herself to carry this team into the playoffs finishing district with five straight shutouts and winning the district championship. Three of those were against the teams that were in the running for the district title. Emma is extremely worthy of this award.
Will is looked up to by all on the golf team. He manages his time well with a full load in our International Baccalaureate program. He is dependable, putting his team first. He is very responsible maintaining a 4.86 GPA. I know I can trust him on and off the golf course.
Kinley is just an amazing young lady. She has had so much success on the golf course throughout her high school career. Her work ethic is second to none. She has
been a district a champion twice, qualified for the 5A Regional Golf Tournament three consecutive years, been to the 5A State Golf Tournament three years in a row. She has won so many accolades it’s hard to count. However, with all this success she has always stayed humble and has been an excellent role model for our three freshman varsity girl golfers this year. Kinley has signed a NCAA Golf Scholarship to play for Stephen F. Austin next year.
WHAT HIS COACH SAID Holden is my Best Preps nominee because of his work ethic and leadership both in the classroom and in an athletic setting. Other members of the powerlifting team are drawn to him
because they see his dedication and he is willing to help them out in any way possible. Holden doesn’t just focus on himself, rather whenever he sees that a teammate needs help he doesn’t hesitate to offer his assistance. Several of his teachers have told me that he has this same attitude and approach in their classrooms. He has committed to join the Lousiana Tech Powerlifting team this upcoming fall.
WHAT HER COACH SAID
Kailynn Thomas is my Best Preps nominee for women’s powerlifting because of her positive uplifting attitude, her ability to accept coaching, and her work ethic. Kailynn always comes to the weight room ready to work with a positive mindset regardless of how she might be feeling that day and she encourages and pushes her fellow teammates to do the same. Being a four-sport athlete, it would be easy to assume that with being stretched so thin, her ability to keep up with that workload could lead her to be less committed to some sports. However, she has never provided me with any question in her commitment to all of her athletics endeavors or to her teammates, and would go out of her way to train with me after school on days around her other sport’s schedules.

Even as freshman, Jason leads the team in both his words and his actions. He is one of the hardest workers on the team. He is one of the first in the water and last out. When he is not competing in the water, he is on the deck cheering on and pushing his teammates to be their best and to do their best.
I chose Aurora for the Best Preps female swimmer because of her strong work ethic in the classroom, in the pool, and in the community. Even though Aurora is always inundated with school, community, and athletic challenges, she always has time to be a team mate and friend to all. Best part is she always finds a way to get it done with a smile on her face.

WHAT HIS COACH SAID
Bryce is a sevenyear tennis player for KISD, with four years on varsity, part of a district champ team as a freshman, and all district player as a 10th and 11th grader. He is one of most well-behaved and polite young man I have had the honor to coach. He is a team leader and a positive remodel for his team mates. He shines in many, many areas of school, athletics, band, and a exemplary agriculture student.
WHAT HER COACH SAID
As our No. 1 player
Sydney’s work ethic is amazing. She spends more time on her tennis and school combined than anyone on my team. Her commitment to submitting to team first and drive to improve are awesome. Her class rank is top 5 of 554 Sophomores at LHS. Sydney makes her teammates better each day and demands the best from herself. She continually promotes team and encourages her teammates to strive to be successful.

Over the last several years, I have watched as Katie has matured into a wellrounded young athlete and an exceptional student who possesses great leadership skills. I am impressed with her ability to juggle so much while never seeming flustered or giving less than her best to the task at hand. I have seen her leadership skills develop and flourish the last two years as cheer captain. Every opportunity to lead, she takes. Katie was the first junior to serve as cheer captain and was again selected to serve as captain her senior year. Katie’s leadership and passionate approach inspires others to follow in her footsteps. I have seen her lead by example, participating in the “work” rather than giving orders, and she’s never been one to boast, brag, or abuse the leadership positions she’s earned.
Alyssa joined the student athletic training program during the 2021-22 school year. Since then, she has been an integral part of this program. She has an amazing work ethic, and we have never once had to be concerned about her grades or behavior. This past football season was the first season we were able to have girls work football, and she was my first choice to put in that position. She is dependable and able to delegate efficiently when needed. I and my partner only wish we had more like her.
Lesly was not able to finish her freshman season after COVID-19 hit. She tore her anterior cruciate ligament her sophomore year and did not finish the season, and she tore her other ACL and was unable to finish her junior season. She was determined to finish her senior soccer season, and she did just that with grit, heart and determination to finish a cross country race and her soccer season. She is a strong leader on the field and in the classroom. I was very proud and honored to coach her all four years.

Jacob Whatley is my Best Preps nominee because he has consistently shown the work ethic, character, selflessness, and passion that we hope to see in every single student-athlete we coach.
He is a four-year starter and captain at goalkeeper, has 722 career saves (208 this season), has won every regional and district honor you can fathom, and was selected to play in the FCA All-Star Game. For all those accomplishments, he has directly impacted many of his teammates lives through encouraging talks to young players, rides to 6 a.m. practices or buying pregame meals for anyone who needs it, and leading by example through his incredible toughness on the field and incredible dedication in the classroom. Jacob is a truly remarkable young man in every aspect of his life, and I have been absolutely humbled to coach him for the last four years. He has been the absolute heartbeat of my program.
Allison is an amazing student athlete. The work ethic to succeed at the level that she does is absolutely phenomenal. She is currently No. 2 in her class academically, is heavily involved in Band, is my No. 3 girl on our varsity tennis team, and has more service hours than any other player on my team. While she is not one of our official team captains, I have seen the captains bring her into discussions multiple times and they clearly value her opinion very highly.

Lexi is the embodiment of a well-rounded student- athlete. She demonstrates great sportsmanship, attitude and work ethic. She works hard and puts in extra work to make herself better and benefit her team. She strives to be better every day and has a “never quit” attitude. She leads by example in the classroom and in the playing field.
WHAT HER COACH SAID
Mia was an outstanding leader on the court this season. She was my captain and my coach on the court. She assisted the younger players when they needed help developing skills. She earned the respect of her entire team and was a joy to coach. She is the MVP of our district and will be difficult to replace next year. Mia helps at Newgate Mission. She also volunteers at Parkview Nursing home with polishing fingernails and playing cards with the residents. She is a great participant in five sports at St. Mary’s, and still managed to complete hours of service to her community.
Preston has been a leader in our athletic programs, school, his church and the community for many years. He leads by example daily, not just by words but he has the ability to change everyone around him in a positive way. When I look at examples that I show my son of how I want him to grow up and be like, Preston is that young man. I am very proud to nominate Preston Armstrong for for the Best Preps Award for Pine Tree Powerlifting.

Courtney Pruitt, a former Longview High School Lady Lobo basketball standout and current Athletic Director at Kilgore College, served as keynote speaker for the 2023 Best Preps Longview event on May 16.
Pruitt served a short time as Kilgore College’s part-time assistant athletic director before being named full-time AD in January of 2022.
Prior to coming to Kilgore College, Pruitt served as associate head women’s basketball coach at Prairie View A&M University, head women’s basketball coach at Alcorn State University, associate director of athletics at Wiley College, head women’s coach at Wiley College, associate head women’s coach at Tyler Junior College, head women’s basketball coach at Ranger College and assistant women’s basketball coach at Lon Morris College.
Pruitt was elected to the Red River Athletic Conference Hall of Fame in 2020 for her success as head coach at Wiley College in Marshall.
She guided Wiley women’s basketball to the greatest run of success in program history as the head coach from 2011-15. She was named RRAC Coach of the Year after both the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, and she was a driving force behind the school’s first two conference championships.
Under Pruitt’s leadership, the Lady Wildcats posted a record of 101-24 over four seasons and captured six postseason victories in three NAIA national tournament appearances. Wiley was ranked in the NAIA’s Top 25 poll 36 straight times. Pruitt coached three NAIA
All-Americans, one RRAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, one RRAC Defensive Player of the Year, one RRAC Freshman of the Year and nine all-conference players.
Pruitt played at Longview High School from 1999-2001, earning alldistrict and all-region honors for the Lady Lobos.
She earned an associate of science in chemistry from Lon Morris College, a bachelor of science in sports management from Newberry College, and a master of education in kinesiology and health science from Stephen F. Austin State University.
Kerrigan is one of our topnotch leaders. She is a fouryear volleyball, basketball, and track athlete. She always leads by example.
Her drive to be the best and be the leader is second to none. At the same time she manages her grades to keep a 99 average in school. We will definitely miss her next year but we wish her well as she is continuing her sports career at Arkansas Monticello to play volleyball.
Biggs was the district Blocker of the Year and a second team All-East Texas performer in volleyball, finishing with 283 kills, 87 blocks, 49 digs and 18 aces.
In basketball, she earned honorable mention All-East Texas honors.
In track, Biggs helped lead Tatum to district and area championships as a team. She ran on the 400, 800 and 1,600-meter relay teams that qualified for the regional meet, and won the area championship in the triple jump.

I am happy and honored to recommend Dealyn Evans for this award. I have known Dealyn for five years and it has been my pleasure to serve as his track & field coach.
