POCKET GUIDE

FALL IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE times of year here in Panola County. We’ve gotten past the part of summer where it feels like you’re broiling from the sun like a chicken in the oven, and the leaves are starting to change into a kaleidoscope of colors.

There are also a great many things to do here.

The Potlatch Festival is probably our biggest event of the season, and one worth traveling for. This year’s fair will span two days, and offers kids’ activities and carnival rides, good shopping, some fun contest exhibits, a poker run and car show, some fantastic food, and great live performances. We have been hard at work organizing this annual fair –since the day after last year, in fact.

Another one of my favorite traditions is the annual pumpkin patch at First Methodist Church. I can remember visiting as a little kid, as they host storytimes for local elementary students each year. That magical feeling still exists, especially now that I

get to see the behindthe-scenes action of how they put it all together. This event is a fundraiser for the church’s youth activities, so in addition to the fun of picking your pumpkins, you get to support a good cause.

Lastly, and certainly not something to miss, is the juggernaut that is Carthage football. Whether you’re a resident or just traveling though, you have to go to a game at least once in your life. Our Bulldogs embody that Carthage tradition of excellence on and off the field – and on the field, it’s fun to watch them dominate. Remember to bring something to sit on during those colder temperatures, and most importantly don’t forget to wear red.

Finally, I’ll leave you with some leaf-peeping tips. If you have a spare afternoon this fall, try driving down FM 959 in the Beckville area, or around Lake Murvaul or the Martin Creek Lake State Park area.

Sincerely,
