In the new music consumer’s mind, rock and roll is a concept of the past. Last year, four songs considered to be a part of the rock music genre made the 2013 Billboard Top 100 Songs. The other 96 were a compilation of songs from pop, alternative, electronic, country, rap, and R&B artists. From 1969 throughout the 1970s, half or more than half of the songs on the Top 100 lists were comprised of rock music. Case in point, rock and roll, as a genre, is dying out. With huge endorsements from major corporations such as Disney Channel, bands like Aaron Carter, The Backstreet Boys, The Jonas Brothers, and Hannah Montana, who were big in the mid-90s to mid-2000s, attracted most young music fans from toddlers to teenagers. This was the type of music all 3 to 17 year old kids were listening to, and it will follow them, meaning the next generation of music is going to be based around the likes of Miley Cyrus and Nick Jonas.

60s through the mid-90s, rock bands were a force to be reckoned with, especially in popular music. Bands like Led Zeppelin, The Who, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, The Doors, and artists like Janis Joplin, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and Pat Benatar, just to name a few, dominated and shaped the rock and roll world. In the modern music industry, the biggest acts do not look like The Beatles, Zeppelin, or Aerosmith, let alone do they sound like them. Gone are the days where four-piece rock bands are at the forefront of the music landscape. Now, they are replaced by solo acts -- mainly pop stars, DJs (like Zedd), and rappers. The music stars of today grew up idolizing Michael Jackson, Madonna, Run DMC and Prince. Our generation got stuck with the artists who grew up as the idea of rock music was dwindling, making a smaller and smaller impression on young people. Rock fans wanted to be a part of something bigger than themselves, to take part in a musical nirvana. Of course, our generation holds some old souls who learned of great rock icons and legends through their parents or other secondhand sources, but they will never get to experience the genuineness and passion in music that was so evident during the peak of the rock age- they will never have the opportunity to take part in that nirvana. The world used to celebrate musicians for their musical talent, depth of lyrics, stage presence, and what they stood for and against. The present pop culture revolves around image and vanity and is produced to please the masses instead of make them

powerful because it was aggressive and different. It inspired the black sheep of society to accept and own their differences and live apart from both musical and societal norms. The twentieth century introduced an evolution of music. Rock and roll evolved into a social movement; it explained economic, racial, sexual, and social matters. It allowed musicians to express their intimate feelings through music, something people were too afraid to express before. The raw urgency of the music struck a chord with the disharmony spreading throughout the country. Rock and roll embraced the odd, the weird, the ugly, the new and different artists who refused to conform to societal and musical standards at the time. In today’s digital age, producers brilliantly package and do not stand up for their music and artistic license to express sell music genres as lifestyles -- without regard for the music. In themselves and their true feelings and opinions. What happened musical usage, albums are used to piece together a collection of to standing up to the man? Instilling values in fans? Nowadays, music is based on celebrity status, “cool” beats, sex, and violence. with the invention of the Internet, iTunes, Pandora Radio, Spotify, There is no passion or depth behind the words being sung and, etc., albums as a whole are a mere afterthought. Rarely do fans in most cases, there is no authenticity behind the music due to listen to albums as albums anymore. Instead, they pick and choose auto tune and digital recording. In my opinion, Justin Bieber does their favorite songs or the most mainstream ones and drop them not compare to Joe Cocker, Katy Perry does not compare to The onto a playlist, completely eradicating the point of an album. Kinks, Shakira does not compare to The Stones, and Neil Young was completely wrong when he said, "Rock and roll will never die."

Opinion 3 Female body pressures take a toll on women BY rachel legon Layout and Features Editor It is 2014. There has yet to be a female president of the United States, although 71 other countries have had women leaders. Only 35 American women have ever served as governors, as opposed to the 2,319 men. The statistics speak for themselves; America needs to make some changes. These issues are not necessarily at the fault of politics, instead, the media is to blame. The issue of gender equality has seen very little improvement over time. As the media becomes more and more important to the lives of teenagers through the use of television, the Internet, and social media sites like Facebook and Instagram, women When 78% of girls feel unhappy with their bodies by the age of 17, it is time for the community, the media, and the government to take a stand against the way women are portrayed. Teenage girls have been forced to strive for an unattainable and overall inhuman perfection, generated by airbrushing, make up, plastic surgery, and computer imaging. American women spend a whopping $12,000 to $15,000 on beauty products, which is especially upsetting as these funds could be spent on other more important and self-improving things, like an education. Studies show that the more young women focus on their image, the lower their school performance. This encourages the idea that a woman’s value is placed only on how attractive she is, which is wholly controlled by the media.

Music videos and commercials all have one aim: to sell to a buyer. Men are enticed by fast cars and images of strong super heroes shooting big guns. Women are dehumanized and meant to feel insecure as each car is accompanied by a model in a swimsuit and every super hero is followed by a lonely, desperate young woman, who just happens to look “Photoshopped” in every scene. What young women fail to realize is that a majority of marketing is aimed towards males between the ages of 18 and 34, according to Lindy Dekeson, chair of the California Commission, Status of Women, and former Executive VP for NBC Entertainment. Males are also disillusioned as they are shown unrealistic images of women, forcing them to have higher expectations for real women. Time and time again, the media has focused a woman’s value on her looks as opposed to her achievements. When politicians like Nancy Pelosi, Sarah Palin, and Hillary Clinton all ran for political positions, the media immediately attacked their appearances. Pelosi was ridiculed for her plastic surgery, Palin was attacked as a “ditz,” but overall accepted because she was pretty, and Clinton was shunned as a “wicked witch.” The media is able to force women out of “masculine” positions by making them appear as cruel people for striving to attain positions of power. They are also mocked as they are judged purely on how their dress outlined

jacket was fashionable or not, but rarely on their policies or ambitions when they achieve their desired roles. Leadership has overall been made masculine, and when young girls cannot picture themselves in

The news has both humiliated and empowered women by diminishing their worth to their fashion sense and allowing sexist broadcasters to force female journalists to expose as much skin as possible in order to gain viewership. By glorifying women who have achieved fame in what some may consider scandalous ways and demonizing women who strive to make a political impact in society, the media keeps young girls attached yet again to this unattainable perfection. In this modern era, it is time to start questioning why women like Madonna or Mila Kunis are treasured by American culture, whereas Senator Clinton cannot give a speech without someone heckling, “iron my shirt.” It is time to start wondering why Senator Clinton loses her title and suddenly becomes “Mrs.” in the title of any headline. It is time that we wonder why 80% of 10-year-old American girls say they have been on a diet, according to a recent article in Just Think. Both the women and men of America need to start reality of our society.

“Bieber Fever” starting to cool down BY estefania martinez Staff Writer On Jan. 24, Justin Bieber’s arrest was leaked to the press and became top news. Supposedly charged with several felonies, he was held in a

teenage phase.” I think this is completely ridiculous to just assume he is committing crimes because he is a teenager. There are millions of teens that do not go drag racing through the streets of Miami

arrested at 4:00 A.M., after failing a sobriety test,

I believe that Bieber should be even more aware of his actions. He should take into account that young girls around the world look up to him. DUIs are unacceptable and had there been other people at the scene, Bieber could have seriously hurt someone. According to MADD, 28 people die everyday from drunk driving. Just because Bieber is famous does not mean that people should excuse his actions. Maybe prisons do not want to house Justin Bieber because of threats of lawsuits from his lawyers and publicists but there should still be consequences. The US courts could mandate Bieber go to rehab for an allotted time. This

illegal drugs, resisting arrest, violating the speed limit, and on top of all of this, was underage. Justin Bieber’s behavior was shocking to many of his fans and police say that he continuously they were telling him. Bieber’s arrest caused even more problems when people all around the US were enraged at the fact that a celebrity’s shameful downfall was being broadcasted throughout the nation and excluding more important worldly events. News stations were not reporting on places like Syria which was in the middle of chaotic revolts; they just kept televising Bieber’s “photogenic” mugshot. Nevertheless, Justin Bieber’s terrible actions were defended by his thousands of fans that argue that he is simply “going through his rebellious

4 News Dancers showcase choreographed pieces for family and friends By Camille Kelleher Web Editor On Tuesday, March 11, the Prep dance students performed their own personally choreographed dance pieces. After months of preparing for this showcase in their classes and review by dance teacher Ms. Gerri Barreras, the dancers performed in front of family and friends. “This show was a little bit different from the other shows because it is more personal,” said Junior Rebecca Garcia. “We choreographed the dances ourselves, put more creativity and heart into the pieces from day one, and were ultimately happy Only the advanced and intermediate students performed their pieces in front of the audience. This show provides an opportunity for dancers to address the theme of journey and transform their feelings and attitudes into rhythm and movement.

Jonathan Chow wins the title of Mr. GP with tough competition By raChel legon Lifestyles Editor On Wednesday Mar. 12, the annual Mr. GP contest was held at the Miller Drive Auditorium. Hosted by seniors Cara and Tesi Zito and Morgan Mills, the show featured six contestants, who displayed their talents and answered a variety of questions about themselves, to be crowned “Mr. GP.” Marc Chasin, Nicholas Acosta, Frank Escobedo, Max Schmer, Jonathan Chow, and Juan Pino all pulled off a variety of performances. The show started with introductions of each of the contestants, followed by the talent portion.

After each contestant performed, senior Kaylee Fantis interviewed them, which were all answered humorously aside from winner Jonathan Chow’s nostalgic answer regarding the swim team. Chasin won third place, Pino success and demonstrated elevated school spirit amongst the senior class.

On February 12, the Prep dance program hosted multiple nearby schools, dance studios, and after school programs for the 12th Annual AIDS Benefit as part of the Dancers Responding to AIDS program. This program is a part of the nation’s leading dance industry fund raising organization Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS, which supports AIDS research, treatment, and social services for those living with the disease. Since 1998, the Broadway Cares has raised $250 million for essential services for people living with AIDS across the United States.

News 5 Drama department on their way to states following triumph at Regionals By Isaac Saba Sports Editor On March 26, members of the drama department will be performing at the Florida State Championship for Thespians. Drama members earned their right to compete by receiving a Superior rating in regional championship. Troops competing at the state competition are only allowed to bring which have to qualify at the district level with a Superior. This year the department received included a large group musical number entitled “Dirt,” a duet from “Spamalot,” featuring juniors Bradley Delgado and Erynn O’Brien, monologues performed by senior Jordan Rodrigues, a duet from “The Last Five Years,” featuring seniors Maksim

Tokarev and Adriana Schaps, and a large group pantomime entitled “Beyond the Massacre,” which received a perfect score at districts. The technical pieces selected included Christina Cancio’s set design, Alyssa Prosper’s costume design and Daniel Simoni’s student-directed scene, which was honored with one of four Critics Choices at district competition -- the highest honor a performance could receive. “I am so excited about states. I am especially excited to see the best thespians in the state,” said junior Max Dietz. Drama students hope to perform at states as well as they did in regionals, to be crowned state champions in their respective skits.

IB students give back to the community with Holmes Elementary School By Anabel Epstein Editor-in-Chief In February, International Baccalaureate students began a partnership with 3rd and 5th grade students from Holmes Elementary School in order to work on reading comprehension and instill a pure enjoyment for reading – a skill necessary in all walks of life. “It’s a really unique community service experiment and experience. I’m really glad to be a part of it,” said junior Daniela Grava. Mrs. Linde Barrett, facilitator and supervisor of the service-learning project, saw the window of opportunity to contribute to a local cause. After several short training sessions conducted to teach tutors how to read with students, junior and seniors began the one-on-one learning process. creating. It is a morning these students can enjoy, and leave with a well-rounded sense of satisfaction. “Being there really makes me realize how much I have to give to other people. My buddy is always so happy to see me, and it is a great opportunity,” said junior Candela Coudray. The opportunity follows the International Baccalaureate program the academic setting. Also, it abides by the Gulliver community’s commitment to improving the surrounding neighborhood. “This is a grass roots program. It occurs with only one change, one child. That is where it all starts,” said Barrett.

Every student has a passion that they dedicate a majority of their free time to. Sophomore Andrew Boas is one student who has found his passion in learning foreign languages. He is currently enrolled in four language classes in school, which include Mandarin, Italian, French and Spanish, while he also tutors Portuguese after school. “I love languages because the ability to communicate with others around the world is not only really helpful and fun, but also supremely gratifying. Being able to connect with people through a different language, has opened my mind to different cultures around the globe,” said Boas. Andrew explained that his love for languages is grounded in his hopes of exploring the world. He has traveled to China and Italy where has was able to practice the languages and become deeply immersed in their culture. “Andrew Boas is an amazing linguist who will make a positive social change in the world through his multi-language communication skills and his broad cultural awareness,” said Mrs. Leann Kurzner, Andrew’s French teacher. This past summer on a family trip to the Italian countryside, Andrew and his father lost their way in a town were Italian was the only predominant language. Andrew seized on the opportunity to practice his Italian and was able to ask for directions back to Florence. “This is when I realized the true value of languages. Being able to communicate is an essential skill that grants multiple advantages ranging from learning about different cultures to asking for directions. I was able to have a much more culturally and linguistically engaged experience than had I not practiced the language within it’s respective country”” said Boas. Andrew has used the skills he has developed from learning languages in order

U.S. LGBT rights activists are celebrating a series of recent legislative victories for same-sex marriage. Federal court rulings in numerous states including Virginia, Kentucky, Texas, and the District of Columbia, among others, overturned bans on same-sex marriage in the recent past. Along with these victories, Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act was declared unconstitutional in 2013 under the Due Process Clause, which allow bi-national same-sex couples to be treated equally under the law. According to the Human Rights Campaign, LGBT youth are more than two times as likely as non-LGBT youth to say they have been verbally harassed and called names at school. Half (51%) have been verbally harassed at school compared to 25% among non-LGBT students. LGBT youth and adults live with the same problems of those of nonLGBT people and face additional problems. The Human Rights Campaign’s report Growing Up LGBT in America: Key Findings includes responses from a sample of LGBT and non-LGBT youth about the challenges they face as teenagers. When nonLGBT youth were asked what problems they face in their lives right now, the top related to jobs. H U M A NS o F G U l l i V e r BY JESSICA ROLNICK Staff Writer Through his photoblog and bestselling book, Humans of New York, Brandon Stanton has photographed and shared the untold stories of over 6,000 people that he has encountered on a daily basis. Stanton spends his day traveling through New York and meeting people of all ages, capturing their unique culture and stories through his photographs. He takes these stories and shares them with the world through his Facebook, Tumblr, and Instagram accounts, and in his bestselling book, published this past year. After losing his job in 2010, Stanton, a self taught photographer, moved to New York to pursue his dream career. He started with a personal goal to photograph 10,000 people in New York and plot their location on a photo map. After meeting many people and hearing about their stories and asking them questions, he decided to record their stories and include them as photo captions. With that, Stanton started extending these quotes and writing stories based on the stories of people he encountered. In addition to New York photography, after the Boston bombing, Stanton began photographing others in Boston and even in Iran. He includes pictures of little kids who have something funny to say about themselves or the world, and even people with a strong opinion they want to express. With a similar goal in mind, we thought it’d be cool to capture and share the untold stories of the “humans” of Gulliver.

On Thursday, Mar. 13, the Interact Club once again highlighted the incredible importance of community service with the annual fashion show, held in the Student Union. With clothes donated by Catch-A-Wave surf and skate shop, Cocoa Couture, Leggenda Prom, My Best Friend’s Closet, and Sissie Jewelry by Melissa Beek, the club was able to host a wonderful show that allowed volunteers to have fun while also giving back to the community. The proceeds from the show are donated to a variety of charities, including the Chapman Partnership, the Easter seals Alzheimer’s Day Care Center, and Give Kids the World, who Interact continuously supports. Organized by junior Remi Beek and senior Nicole Rubin, the show would not have been such a success without the dedication of club members. I’m so proud and thankful of everyone who took part in it,” said Remi Beek. Audience members could also help give back by tickets, Dr. Brandt cosmetics, and gift cards to both Town Restaurant and Bar and George’s, were all given away to audience members for one dollar each. Senior Luisa Maggioni also performed her own rendition of “All of Me” by John Legend. Students can stay involved with Interact Club by volunteering for monthly visits to both the Chapman Partnership and Easter Seals. Interact hopes to continue their legacy as a great contributor to not only the Gulliver community, but also the city of Miami as a whole.

10 News Feature Cheating crackdown: the grim realities of academic dishonesty By Paolo Scalla Managing Editor With the rising trend of academic dishonesty among students at all levels of instruction, cheating presents itself as an undeniable and unfortunate part of education. As high school students are faced with the pressures of maintaining an academic worthy enough of being accepted by the colleges of their dreams and university-level students work to earn employment, cheating is perceived as a stress-free alternative to academic commitment. According to the American Psychological Association, more than half of teenagers admitted to cheating on a test within the last year, with primary motives stemming from fear of failure, low selfesteem, and the belief that cheating is a negligible offense. Since academic dishonesty has become such a routine practice, the tendency is that cheating is less a result of a loss of a sense of ethical values than a submission to peer pressure. with the prevalence of academic dishonesty is not the moral implications, but rather the effect it has on the value of education. The fact that the Josephson Institute Center for Youth Ethics has found that 74% of students admit to copying homework and over half receive unauthorized advantages on exams suggests that students are primarily concerned with grades. Instead of an education serving as an intellectual pursuit for learning, the prevalence

Therefore, the risk of imposing a strict code of academic standards is that the valuable element of considering the ideas of peers is removed out of the fear that the use of similar ideas is deemed dishonest. Due to the fact that academic dishonesty exists in various forms, ranging from plagiarism to cheating and a diverse spectrum of consequences. According to a recent article in The Boston Globe, students of the Spring 2012 class at Harvard University who were discovered to be participating in cheating were required to withdraw from the school. A similar situation was reported by Duke’s student-run newspaper, The Chronicle, in 2010, when students were discovered to have gained access to test material for a chemistry class. The fact that these two cheating scandals occurred at Harvard, which at the time of the event did not have an honor code, and Duke, which only has a “Community Standard,” shows the extent to played at institutions of higher education. One step that Gulliver has taken to prevent such widespread cheating is the implementation of the Gulliver Preparatory Academic Honor Code (GPAHC) to address the issue of academic dishonesty. With punishments for forgery, cheating, and plagiarism including detentions, suspension, and the possibility of expulsion, standards for academic integrity are upheld. Overall, while it is important to secure values of academic conduct to maintain a level of equal opportunity when it comes to the completion of assignments and exams, the struggle exists with the extent to which the prohibition of academic collaboration hinders an individual’s educational horizons.

with Mr. Schachner

What are the consequences of cheating? It depends on the severity of the violation. All GPHAC cases go before the principal, who ultimately decides the most appropriate course of in a warning, a Saturday detention, and the student will receive a zero on the assignment. After the case goes before the committee, the student will meet with Mrs. Lee and write an essay discussing the results.

What are the students on the GPAHC committee responsible for? The GPAHC council is a way for peer to try and help those who have what went wrong and try and prevent it in the future.

What are the different types of cheating that some people may not be aware of? One major problem is plagiarism and the problem is that people unintentionally do it. If a student stay on the academic record at Gulliver, does not give credit then it is deemed academic dishonesty. It is usually a to colleges, and the third will result in expulsion. A GPAHC violation by discussing potential issues with the of any sort will prohibit the student teacher. Another problem is disclosing from participating in academic honor information that will be on a quiz or test societies. to those who have not yet completed the examination.

Repeated concussions linked to dangerous diseases later in life By Isaac saBa Sports Editor For the last few years’ concussions have attained increased attention in the realm of professional sports. However, this issue deserves acknowledgment at the high school and collegiate levels as well. A concussion is a traumatic injury to the brain that causes a temporary or permanent alteration in performance affecting thinking, behavior, and emotions. Concussions have always been prevalent in contact sports but have not always garnered the attention they currently receive. Before concussions began to surface as issues in the NFL and other professional leagues, they were not seen as important or potentially life-threatening; in fact, they were simply seen as just a normal part of the game that did not require recognition. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), males, from the ages of 10 to 19 years old, suffer the most concussions, either while playing football or by falling off bicycles. Even with all the attention that concussions have been getting, many are misdiagnosed or ignored completely. This may be attributed to the misconception that in order to get a concussion the person needs to pass out however only 10% of concussions a person passes out. Concussions are rising according to the CDC during the last decade, “Emergency Department visits for sports and recreation-related Traumatic Brain Injuries, including concussions, among children and adolescents increased by 60%.” This is alarming considering that multiple concussions could lead to Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). CTE is a chronic disease that causes memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, impulse control problems, aggression, depression, and, eventually,

progressive dementia. This disease has been found in retired professional football players and boxers. Concussion recognition and treatment is paramount in order to limit neurodegenerative diseases such as CTE. Coaches and trainers should be trained thoroughly to recognize signs of concussions because many players want to keep on playing regardless of having a concussion. One of such cases is the case of Owen Thomas, a University of Pennsylvania football lineman who committed suicide showing no signs of depression. After an autopsy Thomas’ brain showed signs of CTE the The University of Miami Kids Neuroscience center aims to educate coaches, players, and families of sports players in order to prevent such brain injuries. The Prep also does a thorough job in trying to prevent concussions and in educating both players and coaches to recognize minimize harm from them. The Prep performs impact testing on sports players to measure their baseline scores and to compare the baseline to the scores after a hard hit to the head to recognize whether or not they have a Traumatic Brain Injury such as a concussion. “We basically baseline test our athletes to see where the players are at, once a concussion happens we follow protocol and wait until the player is cleared by an independent Doctor,” said Athletic Director Mark Schusterman. Concussion education is very important however; it is not the only thing that should be done in order to prevent Traumatic Brain Injuries a change in sports is needed to minimize hits to the head in order to prevent injuries that may change a person’s life and not for the better.

Superstar David Beckham to establish MLS team in Miami By KatrIna Gawel Staff Writer The Miami sports scene is about to get a lot crazier. Retired English soccer player and worldwide he will be establishing a Major League Soccer (MLS) team here in South Florida. After months of hard work and ideas, Beckham was able to purchase a MLS franchise for $25 million, turning his dream into reality. The soccer star has already rounded up support from some key people in South Florida. Miami Heat All-Star basketball player LeBron

with the former England captain in investing in his team. James has already invested in soccer teams around the world such as English team Liverpool FC and thinks that it would be great for Miami to have a soccer team.

Page 11.indd 1

“Establishing this team will be very important for soccer in the U.S. because it will expand the sport, and having the owner be David Beckham will certainly attract people,” said junior and varsity soccer player Adriano Castro. But one key factor in establishing this team has to be resolved: creating a new, socceronly stadium. Beckham, MLS commissioner Don Garber and Miami Mayor Carlos Gimenez know something out. “We started our negotiations last week. There is a time crunch to identify the site, get control of that site and then begin construction,” said Mayor Gimenez. So far, the most talked about location for the new stadium is a portion of land at the Port of Miami, which would be expected to hold about

25,000 fans once it has been completed. However, Beckham and his new business partners do not want to publicly fund this stadium- they plan to fund it themselves. Although Beckham and his new colleagues playing, some possible names for the franchise have been revealed- The Miami Current and Miami Vice are two potential names Beckham could quite possibly name the team, but nothing has been

going to be a soccer team here in Miami. I hope one day I’ll be able to play for it,” said junior and varsity soccer player Andy Alvarez. The new team is expected to begin playing in the 2017 season.

12 Sports Tennis player Baker Newman will take his talents to Vanderbilt University by AlexA COOTS Layout/Features Editor Playing tennis since he was six years old, it is no surprise that senior Baker Newman committed to playing for the no. 18 nationally ranked college tennis team at Vanderbilt University. He verbally

Nov. 13. “I kind of made the decision to commit to Vanderbilt on my own. Of course my parents supported my decision, but my mom told me I could do what I wanted to do. I knew I wanted to go there before I even visited the campus. When I did, I thought, ‘man, these four years are going to go by so fast,’” said Newman. Newman started playing tennis before he brothers who also have backgrounds in tennis. “I used to play basically every sport when I was little. I started playing tennis because my older brothers played and I just ended up really liking tennis, it’s a lot of fun,” said Newman. Newman’s older brothers, Spencer, 20, and Trevor, 22, also played tennis since they were young. Spencer was a top 15 recruit for tennis and now plays at the University of Florida. One day, Newman looks forward to possibly playing against his older brother during a match. “Vanderbilt’s in Nashville, they compete in the SEC just like UF, it’s a top 20 school for tennis, the academics are great, they have a good team and good coaches. It doesn’t get much better than that,” said Newman. Newman joined the varsity boys’ tennis team when he was still in middle school, a great accomplishment at the young age of thirteen. “I’ve been playing on the varsity team since 8th grade so that makes this my 5th year on the high school team. I was on the middle school team and the coach needed another player for varsity so she asked me to try out and I made it,” said Newman. Newman anticipated playing tennis at While he was recruited by other schools, including Northeastern, Vanderbilt was always his top choice. “I’m so happy that I’m going to be playing tennis in college. That was my ultimate goal, you know? I was so stoked when I found out Vandy wanted me. I was excited because Vanderbilt was the school I wanted to go to since my freshman year. It’s my dream school,” said Newman. Playing at the college level is slightly different than playing for high school. While most of the rules are basically the same, the scoring format is different and there are little differences in game play, such as being able to play the “let” (a stroke that does not count and must be replayed. This most commonly happens when a serve touches the net before entering the proper service court).

Varsity baseball off to a promising start by Ruby Willie Advertising Manager

Newman is excited for the change in scenery from Miami and the new and exciting challenges and opportunities that are coming his way. “Obviously things are going to change. I’ve been at Gulliver my whole life and now I’m going to be in a new place with a whole new set of people. It’s going to be different, but a good different. It’s going to be a hard transition, but I’m not going to fail. As a freshman athlete, I’m required to check in at least 8-10 study hours a week. There are going to be teacher assistants and tutors at my disposal for academics and athletics, but I’m sure I won’t,” said Newman. Training and practicing has always played a huge role in his daily activity, so preparing for college will come pretty easily to him. hours a day at my tennis club, Royal Palm. Lately, my training has gotten pretty intense but I start training for next year in June,” said Newman.

The boys baseball team progresses as the season continues with a 4-2 record. Although the team has gone through some rough patches, the goal is to accomplish a successful year. “We are a young team this year, but it’s a great team with a lot of unity,” said coach Javier Rodriguez. On Feb. 11 the team played against Killan, with the Raiders taking the lead by scoring 4 runs during the 3rd inning. The game was tied during the end of the 7th, leading to overtime. Killian scored 8-7. The next game was an away game on Feb. 21 against Ransom Everglades. The game started off with the Raiders scoring runs through the 2nd and 4th innings. Ransom only scored one run during for the Gulliver Raiders with a score of 11-1. “Davis Brown pitched throughout the game that night that led us to the win,” said freshman Raymond Gill. Their recent win was a home game on Mar. 5 against Mater Lakes Academy. The Raiders kept their lead from the beginning to the end of the game. The Raiders clinched the win with a score of 0-5. “We come out 100% focused, and treat each game differently,” said senior Joe Dunand. Dunand has been on the team since freshman The team continues the season with their next game on March 17th against Terra Environmental Research Institute.

Divergent By Estefania Martinez Staff Writer On Mar. 21, a new dystopian world will be introduced to theaters. Divergent, which is part of a trilogy, will Roth. The plot centers around a teenage girl named Beatrice Prior who is living in a world where everything is equally divided, even the people. Everyone is split into 5 different “factions” or sections of society. All these factions represent different personality traits and their members are raised a certain way to adhere to these rules. Abnegation, Prior’s initial home, represent honesty, friendship, intelligence, and bravery. Her story begins when she learns that she is “divergent,” a term used to describe people who have more than one of the qualities from the factions. She promptly leaves Abnegation to join Dauntless, a faction that is almost the complete

With a huge social media fanbase, the movie has been anticipated by teenagers for many months. Some fans are planning to camp out outside movie theaters the night before the premiere just to obtain a seat. According to Yahoo, Divergent is supposedly the next big young adult franchise. Many are arguing that it will be even bigger than The Hunger Games because it has had the same build up. The cast is mostly all young actors. Shailene Woodley, a very known young actress, will be playing the role of Beatrice Prior and Oscar winner Kate Winslet is on board. She will play the main antagonist who is the leader of the intelligence-based faction known as Erudite. Divergent is shaping up to be a huge hit and hopefully, production for the next two movies will begin soon.

essential for an up-and-coming group. Undeniably a band, Chvrches takes a rather unorthodox approach that has recently gained hype with artists like Flum and Mr Carmack. Guitar is at a minimum and electronic based sound is at full force on “The Bones of What You Believe.” Overall, the album utilizes excellent beats. While The Bones of What You Believe is fully listenable... highlights of the LP include track “Lies” and “Guns.” These tracks sum up Chvrches as an indie-electro band. The Bones of What You Believe carries conviction throughout every track and can be listened to almost universally on any occasion. While some tracks contain a bit more eccentricity than others, Chvrches is a band on the rise that have generated their own subsect of sound.

Buns & Buns brings international bread to the table BY ravi patel News Editor Although the name itself may not appeal to those that are carb-conscious, Buns & Buns is a great asset to the gastronome arena in South Miami. The over-the-counter service restaurant located at 5748 Sunset Drive offers an international menu featuring cuisines from around the world and gives customers certain liberties with creating their own dining experience.
