INTRODUCTION At the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum (DHHRM), we are committed to teaching the history of the Holocaust and advancing human rights to combat prejudice, hatred, and indifference. The principal way we fulfill this commitment is through education. We offer a diverse group of programs that engage with the history highlighted in our permanent exhibition. With antisemitism on the rise, we must offer the tools and means to help people better understand antisemitism, its history, and its impact today. As a history museum, our role is to be a convener in the community, engaging in meaningful discussion of current issues rooted in our understanding of the past. Through this tool kit, we provide some of our resources and share information from other trusted sources. It is our great hope that this will further our community’s education and understanding of this important topic.

WHAT IS ANTISEMITISM? ANTISEMITISM Since 2016, the U.S., as one of 31 member nations of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), has used the IHRA’s working definition of antisemitism, including its examples: Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.

Contemporary examples of antisemitism in public life, the media, schools, the workplace, and in the religious sphere could include, but are not limited to: • Calling for, aiding in, or justifying the killing or harming of Jews in the name of a radical ideology or an extremist view of religion. • Making dehumanizing, demonizing, or stereotypical allegations about Jews or the power of Jews as a collective — such as the myth about a world Jewish conspiracy or of Jews controlling the media, economy, government, or other societal institutions. • Accusing Jews as a people of being responsible for real or imagined wrongdoing committed by a single Jewish person or group, or even for acts committed by non-Jews. • Denying the fact, scope, mechanisms (e.g., gas chambers), or intentionality of the genocide of the Jewish people at the hands of National Socialist German Worker’s (Nazi) Party and its supporters and accomplices during World War II (the Holocaust). • Accusing the Jews as a people, or Israel as a state, of inventing or exaggerating the Holocaust. • Accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel, or to the alleged priorities of Jews worldwide, than to the interests of their own nations. • Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor. • Applying double standards by requiring of Israel a behavior not expected or demanded of any other democratic nation. • Using the symbols and images associated with classic antisemitism (e.g., claims of Jews killing Jesus or blood libel) to characterize Israel or Israelis. • Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis. • Holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the State of Israel.

STATISTICS ON ANTISEMITISM In recent years, the United States and the world have seen an increase in antisemitism. The deadly attacks on synagogues in Pittsburgh, PA and Poway, CA have made American Jews feel more vulnerable, as have the ideological and political attacks against Jewish students on many of our nation’s campuses. Several organizations monitor antisemitism and provide statistics to the public. GENERAL TIPS • Educate yourself about the long history of antisemitism and its modern forms. • Avoid using anti-Jewish language or making references to Jewish stereotypes. • Speak out against antisemitic jokes, slurs, and comments. Silence can send the message that such comments are acceptable. • Avoid attributing the actions of an individual to an entire group of people. • Report incidents of antisemitism and antisemitic websites to local law enforcement and the AntiDefamation League.

TIPS FOR EDUCATORS AND SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS • Include a discussion on antisemitism and its history in the general curriculum or during Holocaust Remembrance Week. • Attend and encourage educators to attend professional development on antisemitism. • Create policies and classroom environments that are inclusive of Jewish students. • Implement an anonymous online reporting system where students can share safety concerns and incidents of anti-Jewish bullying and hate speech. • Report incidents of antisemitism to your local law enforcement, the Anti-Defamation League, and TEA Equal Educational Opportunity Office.
