Laura Bush October 22, 2020 Greetings to those joining the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum’s Hope for Humanity event. On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the liberation from the Nazi concentration camps, I join you in saluting Liberators and Survivors from the Lone Star State. My father, Harold Welch, was a master gunner in the United States Army. He was a member of the 555th Antiaircraft Battalion, 104th Infantry Division. Also known as the Timberwolves, the 104th is credited with liberating Nordhausen, Germany, the site of the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp. He was among the early wave of troops who entered the camp and witnessed the atrocities of Mittelbau-Dora. Photographs my father mailed home to my mother showed the horrors of Nazi brutality that the American liberators found at Nordhausen. I am proud of my father and the American troops who brought freedom to Europe. I’m grateful to Fran and Mark Berg for your work to honor our Texas Liberators and Survivors. And I’m thankful to the staff and supporters of the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum for your dedication to preserving these important stories so that future generations learn from the efforts of these brave patriots. These accounts resonate with all of us, and especially with those whose loved ones fought in the name of freedom. May we never forget their sacrifice. President Bush and I are thankful for our veterans’ service to our country. We salute their valor and contribution to a legacy of peace and liberty for all. With respect and pride, we send our best wishes,

Frank Risch, Board Chair, and Mary Pat Higgins, President and CEO, with President and Mrs. George W. Bush. Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum, 2019 visit.

LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR & PRESIDENT AND CEO Good evening and welcome to our first-ever virtual Hope for Humanity dinner! At the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum, our mission is to teach the history of the Holocaust and advance human rights to combat prejudice, hatred, and indifference. Learning our history and being aware of our past are vital to ensuring that “never again” means something. In this 75th anniversary of liberation, we honor the brave Upstanders of our past and our present: Survivors and Texas Liberators of Nazi concentration camps. We know the numbers: six million Jews, more than one and a half million of them children, were deliberately murdered. Yet recently, the Claims Conference, an organization which seeks a small measure of justice for Jewish victims of Nazi persecution through restitution and reparations payments, published worrying survey results on Holocaust knowledge of Millennials and Gen Z (ages 18-39) from all 50 states. Among the most startling results: 48% could not name a single concentration camp, 36% thought that “two million or fewer Jews” were killed, and 11% believe Jews were responsible for the Holocaust. Optimistically, 80% of respondents also believe in the importance of teaching the history of the Holocaust. Education is the key to our future - from it we learn hope, we garner strength, and we inspire future generations to push for a better world for us all. Through their personal testimonies, Survivors and Liberators bestow upon us a powerful legacy of human values, morality, truth, and honor. Their eyewitness testimony teach us how to be resilient even during the darkest of times. When all seems bleak, our Survivors and Liberators remind us that the key to hope for humanity lies within each of us. Special thanks to Event Co-Chairs Fran and Mark Berg & Mark and Peggy Zilbermann for successfully orchestrating this year’s event. Along with their Honorary Co-Chairs and Host Committee, they worked tirelessly to invite many of you to join us tonight. Thanks to their terrific effort and the incredible generosity of all of you, we exceeded the budgeted goal for this important fundraiser for our Museum – thank you! Our mission remains top of mind and it is with your help that we continue to write the next chapter of our history – together. With hope, strength, and resolve,

Frank Risch, Board Chair

Mary Pat Higgins, President and CEO 5

The 25 servicemen pictured, left, comprise only a portion of the over 500 brave men who have been identified as Texas Liberators. Representing all parts of Texas, these men were present at the liberation of Nazi concentration camps. Working with Texas Tech University, the Baylor Institute for Oral History, and Texas Holocaust museums, the Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission offers the Texas public these eyewitness accounts through a website, book, traveling exhibit, and educational app which convey the journey these men endured. Visit http://www.texasliberators.org/ to learn more about the Texas Liberator Project.

The mission of the Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission is to bring awareness of the Holocaust and other genocides to Texas students, educators, and the general public by ensuring availability of resources, and in doing so imbue in individuals a sense of responsibility to uphold human value and inspire citizens in the prevention of future atrocities.
