LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO & BOARD CHAIR Dear Friends, We are excited to welcome you, both virtually and in-person, to the 2021 Hope for Humanity event! At the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum, our mission is to teach the history of the Holocaust and advance human rights to combat prejudice, hatred, and indifference. Amid the continued increase in antisemitic and racially motivated sentiment and violence, it is more important than ever to reflect on the lessons of the Holocaust to ensure such atrocities will never happen again. At the Museum, we look to history to inform our future. We are here tonight to celebrate our Survivors, who remind us that our choices matter and impact others. Rather than directing our efforts to avenging the past, they inspire us to make positive differences every day and to be truly grateful for all that we have. Tonight, we are proud to honor Max Glauben as our 2021 Hope for Humanity awardee. More than 40 years ago, Max helped conceive the idea of a museum alongside fellow local Survivors. In the words of his children, while most people retire from their careers, their father chose to retire to another one: whole-heartedly devoting his time to support the Museum’s educational mission. His life is a testament to the importance of this work. The story Max shares illustrates what can happen when hatred goes unchecked and speaks to the power of what can happen when individuals stand up for what is right. Despite experiencing the worst of humanity during the Holocaust, Max has dedicated himself to sharing his family’s story with a message of hope, ending every speaking engagement with his signature “never, never, never, never give up.” How serendipitous it is that Glauben in German means “believe.” In this season of Thanksgiving, our thoughts turn to the blessings in our lives — our families, friends, and community. On behalf of the Board and Museum staff, we are deeply grateful to Event Chairs Candy and Ike Brown for successfully orchestrating tonight’s event and championing the values we hold dear. Along with the 2021 Hope for Humanity Honorary Co-Chairs and Host Committee, they worked tirelessly to bring this meaningful event to you tonight. Thanks to the incredible generosity of all of you, we are proud to announce that we have exceeded the goal for this important fundraiser for our Museum – THANK YOU for investing in our important work! Together, we make a difference. Together, we inspire Upstanders.

MONIEK “MAX” GLAUBEN 2021 HOPE FOR HUMANITY HONOREE

At the time of Liberation, Max was a 17-year-old orphan who had witnessed and survived the unimaginable, including the murder of his immediate family. He has dedicated his life to honoring his family’s memory and the memory of the six million Jews by sharing his Holocaust story through the lens of compassion, empathy, and resilience. He reminds us that there is hope in hopelessness and that one person can make a difference.

Hope for humanity lies in each of us. 6

It is humbling to sit down with a survivor to gather their information, learn where they were when the war started and when the war ended, and hold that space in between for them, the space that contains a life chapter of loss, grit and grace.

CURRENT AND UPCOMING SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS

The Book Smugglers: Partisans, Poets, and the Race to Save Jewish Treasures from the Nazis June 23, 2021 – January 2, 2022 The Book Smugglers is the nearly unbelievable true story of ghetto residents who rescued thousands of rare books and manuscripts by hiding them on their persons, burying them in bunkers, and smuggling them across borders. Set in Vilna, Lithuania, known as the “Jerusalem of Lithuania” for its Jewish culture rich with art, music, literature, poetry, theater, and opera, a small group of partisans and poets risked everything to save Jewish cultural treasures. The Book Smugglers: Partisans, Poets and the Race to Save Jewish Treasures from the Nazis is curated by Holocaust Museum Houston based on the book by David E. Fishman. CURRENT AND UPCOMING SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS Courage and Compassion: The Japanese American World War II Experience January 20, 2022 – June 12, 2022 Following Japan’s bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Japanese Americans living on the West Coast were forced from their homes and into incarceration camps scattered across the western and southern United States. Approximately 120,000 residents of Japanese ancestry, nearly two-thirds of whom were American citizens, were forced to leave their lives behind, denied their constitutional rights, and imprisoned without trial simply because they looked like the enemy. Using images, audio, interactives, and testimony, Courage and Compassion provides a 360-degree perspective of the WWII experience of Americans of Japanese ancestry while exploring the relevance of these events today. The exhibition honors people across America who stood up to recognize Japanese Americans as friends, neighbors, and fellow citizens. Photo courtesy of National Archives & Records Administration. FUNK FAMILY UPSTANDER SPEAKER SERIES

JUDITH HEUMANN TUESDAY, MARCH 22, 2022 | 7:00 P.M. VIRTUAL VIA ZOOM

The Funk Family Upstander Speaker Series was created to showcase individuals and organizations who stand up for human rights on a local, national, or global level. Named in loving memory of Blanche & Max Goldberg | Fannie & Isaac Funk. At five years old, Judith Heumann was denied the right to attend public school because the wheelchair she used after contracting polio was deemed a “fire hazard.” Heumann channeled this early experience with discrimination, as well as many instances thereafter, into becoming a tireless advocate for the rights of disabled people. A leader at the forefront of the disability rights movement, Heumann played a key role in advancing the independent living movement and implementing national legislation, including the Americans with Disabilities Act. Join us to hear how Judith Heumann has dedicated her life to advocacy and enacted positive change for millions of people living with disabilities in the United States.
