BIFS ART AND DESIGN IB VISUAL ARTS (HL & SL) Course Description Within IB Visual Art students will: · develop the skills and techniques of investigation—both visual and written · relate art to its cultural and historical contexts · explore art concepts · explore art elements · develop and use the processes of art criticism and analysis · develop confidence and expertise in the use of various media · extend their knowledge of design · share their work with an audience through displays and exhibitions or presentations · extend individual investigation to inform practical work · make connections between ideas and practice—both their own and others’. Students will do the above through the use of investigation work books (IWBs) which will provide the research, designs, and concepts of their studio work. Within grade 11 students will follow set units of work which will gradually become more personal allowing the student to explore their own interests and ideas. Grade 12 students will see a continuation of this with students developing their own body of work in preparation for their final exhibition.

Objectives The aims of the visual arts course at HL and SL are to enable students to: · investigate past, present and emerging forms of visual arts and engage in producing, appreciating and evaluating these · develop an understanding of visual arts from a local, national and international perspective · build confidence in responding visually and creatively to personal and cultural experiences · develop skills in, and sensitivity to, the creation of works that reflect active and individual involvement · take responsibility for the direction of their learning through the acquisition of effective working practice

Assessment Option A Studio 60% External assessment The student prepares a selection of his or her studio work in the form of an exhibition. Investigation 40% Internal assessment The student presents selected pages of his or her investigation workbooks that have been produced during the course. This selection is internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IBO at the end of the course.


Option B Investigation 60% External assessment The student presents selected pages of his or her investigation workbooks that have been produced during the course. Studio 40% Internal assessment The student presents a selection of his or her studio work. This selection is internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IBO at the end of the course. Assessment outline Having followed the visual arts course at HL or SL, students will be expected to: 1. respond to and analyse critically and contextually the function, meaning and artistic qualities of past, present and emerging art, using the specialist vocabulary of visual arts 2. develop and present independent ideas and practice, and explain the connections between these and the work of others 3. explore and develop ideas and techniques for studio work through integrated contextual study and first-hand observations 4. develop and maintain a close relationship between investigation and a purposeful, creative process in studio work 5. produce personally relevant works of art that reveal evidence of exploration of ideas that reflect cultural and historical awareness 6. develop and demonstrate technical competence and artistic qualities that challenge and extend personal boundaries (option A) and technical competence and self-direction (option B).

Unit Sequence Grade 11: Unit 1 - Autobiographical Artwork Students will produce an individual piece of 2D artwork based on autobiographical statements and personal cultural heritage. This unit of work aims to give an overview of project guidelines and processes required in future projects. Unit 2 – 25 Drawings Students will research a range of drawing artists and complete a series of drawings based on research and individual subject matter. Students will work through a range of traditional and contemporary drawing techniques and approaches. Unit 3 – Surfaces (mini project) Students will begin this exploratory mini project with an investigation into surfaces through photography and a range of painting techniques. They will develop an understanding of abstraction and how to incorporate “mechanic” and “organic” painting processes. Unit 4 – Painting Students will expand previous ideas into independent painting projects. They will be exploring appropriate artists, concepts and materials with guidance from the teacher.

Unit 5 – Independent Project Students will extend ideas from the previous project into a new and related piece of work. They will be exploring appropriate artists, concepts and materials with guidance from the teacher. The materials used, themes and outcomes will vary depending on the students interests. Unit 6 – Printmaking Students will explore a range of printmaking processes such as relief, monoprints, etching and collagraphs. The subject matter and theme will vary depending on the student’s interests. Unit 7 – Independent Project See explanation of Independent project above. Unit 8 – Sculpture Students will explore a range of sculpture processes and technique. The subject matter and theme will vary depending on the student’s interests. Unit 9 – Producing a final body of work Students will reflect on all previous work and produce a series of work based on strengths in previous projects. They will be exploring appropriate artists, concepts and materials with guidance from the teacher. The materials used, themes and outcomes will vary depending on the students interests. Grade 12: Self-directed Students will be continuing to develop their own body of work exploring appropriate artists, concepts and materials with guidance from the teacher. The materials used, themes and outcomes will vary depending on the students interests.

Resources Equipment: This varies on each students work, but basic drawing equipment should be available to use.
