BIFS ART AND DESIGN VISUAL ARTS (Grades 9-10) Course Description IGCSE Art and Design allows students to develop and produce personal responses that use a broad range of skills and approaches to study. Students will learn how to: • Identify and research a particular aspect of Art and Design; • Carry out relevant exploration of materials, media and appropriate processes; • Document and evaluate ideas and concepts against aims and objectives as the work proceeds; • Develop these into a cohesive outcome.

Objectives IGCSE Art and Design aims to develop: 1. An ability to record from direct observation and personal experience; 2. An ability to identify and solve problems in visual and/or other forms; 3. Creativity, visual awareness, critical and cultural understanding; 4. An imaginative, creative and personal response; 5. Confidence, enthusiasm and a sense of achievement in the practice of Art and Design; 6. Growing independence in the refinement and development of ideas and personal outcomes; 7. Engagement and experimentation with a range of media, materials and techniques including new media where appropriate; 8. Experience of working in relevant frameworks and exploration of manipulative skills necessary to form, compose and communicate in two and/or three dimensions; 9. Knowledge of a working vocabulary relevant to the subject and an interest in, and a critical awareness of other practitioners, environments and cultures; 10. Investigative, analytical, experimental, interpretative, practical, technical and expressive skills which aid effective and independent learning.

Unit Sequence Grade 9: Unit 1 Intro to Journaling Students will explore a series of contemporary drawing exercises to foster visual thinking and gain a thorough understanding of journaling. Unit 2 Still life Students will explore drawing through studying still life objects. They will be improving technical drawing skills and deepening an understanding of the basic principles of art and design. Unit 3 Cubist mixed media Students will explore the Cubist Art movement and related artists to produce a mixed media painting. They will improve their design and compositional skills along with experimenting with new media and processes. Unit 4 Self Portraiture Students will explore self-portraiture through a range of art making processes such as drawing, logo design, printmaking and painting. GRADE 10: Unit 1 Landscape Students will explore various mediums looking at landscapes in the local area. Students will continue to improve their technical skills and deepening an understanding of the basic principles of art and design and various processes. Unit 2 Mock Exam Students will complete a unit using a previous years IGCSE question as a starting point. Students will develop their work personally and create an outcome which reflects their interests. Unit 3 Final Exam Students will sit the final Cambridge IGCSE exam. They will submit supporting studies on no more than 2 A2 sides of paper and a final outcome reflecting their personal response to the chosen question.
