Amundsen’s Other Expeditions Roald Amundsen may be best known for
being the first man to find the South Pole: however he had many successful expeditions before this that helped to shape him into a world class explorer.
The lessons that amundsen learned during his time in the North Pole definitely worked to his advantage as he planned his trip to the South Pole.
Flying Over the North Pole (1926) Amundsen’s desire to explore could not be contained to land and sea. In 1926 Amundsen Northwest Passage (1903-1906) took to the air. For this expedition Amundsen In 1903 Amundsen led the first expedition to used that airship Norge. Traveling by air, cross the Canada’s Northwest Passage, a Amundsen and his crew were able to reach the route that required him to travel from the North Pole. Unfortunately, Amundsen new Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. passion for air travel would prove deadly. During this time Amundsen and his crew learned important Arctic survival skills from the Netsilik Inuit people. Some skills that he learned on this expedition were how to use dog sleds, and to wear animal skins for protection against cold weather instead of heavy wool garments that many explorers chose.
Disappearance and Death (1928) On June 18th, 1928, flying a rescue mission over the Arctic, Amundsen and his crew disappeared. Afterward wreckage from his plane was found. It is assumed that Amundsen’s plane went down over the Arctic and that the entire crew perished.
