A cup of coffee, dogwoods and a plan BY PENNYLYNN WEBB Did you know that the idea for the Dogwood Trails was hatched over a cup of coffee? The Palestine Herald-Press’ July 4, 1976 edition reported that it was in the spring of 1938, when Charles W. Wooldridge, the power-company manager, and Eugene Fish, a local bank president, met for a casual cup of coffee. During their visit, it was reported that their discussion led to comments of the unusual and unique beauty of the dogwood trees in the area, with the men agreeing that Palestine should have a dogwood trail. Inspired by the idea, Wooldridge visited with the local newspaper that day, suggesting not only the trail, but also an invitation to out-of-towners to visit and enjoy the scenic splendor that Palestine has to offer. Newspaper articles circulated throughout the state, bringing more
than 20,000 visitors to Palestine the first year. The attendance was said to have doubled the second year, and the event became an annual staple, drawing crowds from near and far each spring. During the early years, the trails were said to be roughly routed over unpaved country roads and anywhere sightseers could see the beautiful blooms. Eventually local landowners, E.W. and H.R. Link, gave visitors access to land that was abundant with blossoms, allowing proper, yet crudely cut, trails to be constructed, with the first true trail being opened in 1941. In February 1944, the event was moved to a centralized location, when M.A. Davey, a Palestine oilman, deeded a 254-acre tract of land — now known as Davey Dogwood Park — to Anderson County to be used as a park of natural beauty. Today this park has more than five and a half miles of hard-surfaced
roads and features a dazzling display of dogwood trees each spring. It has been noted that, while there are many different types and species of dogwood trees, those native to Palestine are the white Cornus florida, which grow all along the east coast, parts of the Gulf of Mexico and in northeast Texas. Palestine and the surrounding area is said to have one of the highest concentrations of Cornus florida dogwoods in Texas. Over the years, the Texas Dogwood Trails celebration has drawn thousands of tourists to the area. “Dogwood Trails is a wonderful family event that our community looks forward to each year,” said Marc Mitchell, Palestine Area Chamber director. “It’s not only a great time to show off the splendor of Mother Nature, but also to showcase the downtown businesses.” This year’s Dogwood Trails Festival will be held March 25 in downtown Palestine from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with
arts and crafts, a beer garden, food, a car show, kids activities, live entertainment and more.

Unique Dogwood Festival keepsake BY PENNYLYNN WEBB reporter@palestineherald.com The women of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church have developed a beautiful keepsake to commemorate this year’s Dogwood Trails. “We are selling these eggs, adorned with dogwood blossoms, during Dogwood Trails,” said Marian Raney. The idea was shared with the club by member Judy Leveridge, who moved here from Corpus Christi. “At the church I attended in Corpus, we decorated eggs for Easter,” said Leveridge. “When I moved here and I saw how stun-
ning the dogwoods were, I thought decorating the eggs with the dogwoods would be nice.” Each egg was blown out, dried out, painted and then adorned with a clay dogwood blossom on a branch, Raney said. “We even used actual petals and leaves to imprint the veins on the clay pieces,” said Leveridge. The bases for the decorated eggs range from shiny-gold to rustic tree-limb sections. And, while most of the eggs were painted a bird’s-egg blue, they do have some in other colors, Raney said. Each egg, which is very fragile, will be packed in a plastic carton with tissue
paper and a card that shares the history of the dogwood tree, Raney said. The eggs will be sold from the porch of the church throughout the day on March 25 during the first weekend of Dogwood Trails, Raney said. They are $15 per egg or you can purchase two for $25. The funds from the egg sales will be used for community outreach, missions and other church programs, Raney said. For more information on the eggs or St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, call 903-7294214. St. Philip’s is located at 106 E. Crawford St. in Palestine.

The Legend of the Dogwood There is a legend, that at the time of the Crucifixion, the dogwood had been the size of the oak and other forest trees. So firm and strong was the tree, that it was chosen as the timber for the cross. To be used thus for such a cruel purpose greatly distressed the tree, and Jesus, while nailed upon it, sensed this, and in His gentle pity for all sorrow and suffering, said to the dogwood: “Because of your regret and pity for My suffering, never again shall the dogwood tree grow large enough to be used as a cross. Henceforth, it shall be slender and bent and twisted, and its blossoms shall be in the form of a cross … two long and two short petals. In the center of the outer edge of each petal, there will be nail prints, brown with rust and stained with red, and in the center of the flower will be a crown of thorns, and all who see it will remember.”

cars that have been modified, said Kristy Kirkwood Thatcher, vice president of the CARS club. Thatcher said the main competition for the car show is the 2017 Car Show Top 20, where awards will be given out to speciality cars. Thatcher said the changing of the day of the Dogwood Trails Festival might affect the number of cars turning out, as some people arrange their schedules around other car shows and may not be able to make it to Palestine on the new date. A family-oriented, nonprofit organization, CARS of Palestine uses its collective love of everything auto-related to bring in other enthusiasts, raising money for their many fundraisers, including the Potties in the Park, a drive to bring bathroom facilities to Davey Dogwood Park. In addition, vehicle entries will compete for the Mayor’s Choice, Sheriff ’s Choice, Police Chief ’s Choice, People’s Choice, Best Standard Paint, Best Custom Paint and Best of Show, Thatcher said, adding that there will be a food vendor and disc jockey on site. The disc jockey will be Robin Butt of Boogie Butt Productions, and the food vendor will be Rumps BBQ with fish baskets and barbecue. Winners will receive trophies and plaques for each category. The $3 admission fee goes toward a scholarship fund provided for Anderson County students for four scholarships, two new and two sustaining for previous student winners, Thatcher said. The club is also trying to put up permanent restrooms in the Dogwood Park, Thatcher said. Participants can register at the gate on Saturday for $25, and early registration is $20 online at http://Palestine/car_show.html.

Eat, drink and be merry at Sabor a Pasion BY PENNYLYNN WEBB reporter@palestineherald.com There are several reasons to journey out to Sabor a Pasion during this year’s Dogwood Trails Festival. Hidden in the hills outside Palestine, visitors can enjoy a stunning view of the area as they journey out to the renowned bed and breakfast. “Spring has sprung at Sabor a Pasion, the dogwoods are bursting with blooms and everything is very green, so everything is going to be lovely for all the events we have planned for Dogwood Trails this year,” said renowned chef and Sabor owner Simon Webster. “We are seeing visitors from all over, including repeat visits from our visitors from Russia. We are also being booked by a lot of visitors who are riding the Texas State Railroad,” said Webster. Webster and cookbook author, food photographer, chef instructor and television host for FRESH Ideas on KYTX-CBS19, Chef Christine Gardener will host a Mad Hatter Tea Party-themed cooking class, “Cooking Under the Dogwoods,” at noon on April 1. “For this class, the group will be learning to make a few classic British recipes that capture the English countryside,” Webster said.
The menu includes a cocktail called Pimm’s Potion, assorted tea sandwiches, Parsnip & Apple South, Queen of Hearts Salad with Red Wine, Shallot Vinaigrette, English Sausage Rolls, Savory Bread & Butter Pudding and a
Bakewell Tart. The cost of the class is $55 per person. All who plan to attend the class are asked to call ahead to make a reservations. The bed and breakfast will host an open house from 2-6 p.m. on April 2. “Locals are invited to come tour the property, meet Chef Simon Webster and Chef Christine Gardener, along with some of their preferred vendors and learn more about the services they offer at Sabor a Pasion. “You’ll have a chance to sample food and wine, visit the Chef ’s Kitchen & Restaurant Aubergine, see the vineyard and tour the bed & breakfast,” said Webster. “You can also learn about our wedding packages, menus and see our new cabins.” And at 2 p.m. on April 8, the bed and breakfast will host a “Paint & Sip” in the Vineyard with Austinbased artist, Cecilia Bramhall.
Going Out of Business Under the direction of Bramhall, attendees will paint a dogwood festival and state of Texas-themed design. All painting supplies will be provided, and painters are invited to bring their own bottle of wine. The cost of the class is $40 and reservations are required. Taste of Palestine and Business Expo to combine forces BY MICHAEL MARESH news@palestineherald.com Following last year’s success of combining the Taste of Palestine and the Business Expo, the Palestine Chamber of Commerce is joining the two this y year once again. g
The two events take place from 5-8 p.m. April 6 at the Palestine Civic Center. “We found it to be very popular,”
said Chamber of Commerce President Marc Mitchell. “It has a nice feel to it.” Both events require forms to be filled out.
The cost to vend at the Business Expo is $50 for chamber members and $75 for non-chamber members, Mitchell said. Set-up begins at 3 p.m. April 6, and exhibits must be in place by 4:45 p.m. Vendors may also give away door prizes at their booths, and signage may go on the walls, only if it is with
3M pull tabs.
Participants wishing to participate in the Taste of Palestine need to realize that they each are responsible for the cost and preparation of food to serve approximately 200 people, with sample sizes of four to five ounces. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 on the day of the two events for attendees, Mitchell said. He said the food vendors will be spread out throughout the exhibit, where people can get a taste of food and talk to the vendors. Serving equipment: warmers,
sternos and hot boxes are necessary. Table cover, table cloth, a banner and menus, and people to serve the food are required, too. The Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce will provide: media coverage, including radio, newspaper, email and Facebook; three wrist bands for employees assisting that evening; soft drinks, tea, coffee; eating utensils, plates and napkins; and two six-foot tables and two chairs. There is no charge for the food vendors, except for the food they will be serving. Deadline to submit an application is March 31 For more information, call chamber at 903-729-6066 or by fax at 903-7292083 or by email at info@palestinechamber.org

Book signing for local author at The Redlands BY PENNYLYNN WEBB reporter@palestineherald.com Local author, Ruth Davis, just released, “Thirteen Rivers: The Last Voyage of La Belle,” a novel of historical fiction based on the true adventures of French explorer Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle and his colony. Ruth, a fifth-generation Texan, lives in Palestine. Her family’s homestead in Henderson County dates back to 1887. She and husband, Dan Davis, have a real-estate office and working ranch in Anderson County. “Thirteen Rivers” is a tale of pirates, hurricanes, war parties, betrayal, revenge, kidnapping, shipwreck and murder in a chronicle of events retold from the journal of 1st Lt. Henri Joutel. According to Davis, the inspiration for the book was developed about 10 years ago, the Palestine Library Friends sponsored plays that were per-
formed on the Texas State Railroad, and she was encouraged to write one of those plays about an archeologist, which she titled “Raiders of La Salle’s Treasure.” In order to write this play, Davis did extensive research on the La Salle expedition, which later inspired her to write this historical fiction. Her research revealed that the expedition was plagued from the beginning. “The mission was ravaged by pirates, hurricanes, Indian war parties, shipwreck, kidnapping and murder,” said Davis. She also revealed that the French expedition traveled across East Texas and camped for more than two months with the Cenis and Caddo Indians at the site of Caddo Mounds State Historical Park near Alto. Davis also shared that one of the four ships of the mission, La Belle, was discovered in 1995 in Matagorda Bay.

The La Belle and was excavated and approximately two-thirds of her hull remained intact and was preserved by scientists at Texas A&M. The La Belle and many of her 1.6 million artifacts, including a bronze cannon, are now on display at the Bob Bullock museum in Austin, Davis said. Davis will be doing book signings on all three weekends of Dogwood Trails at Mary Jean’s Boutique in the Redlands building.
