Explore Dogwood Park in a new way in 2019 BY PENNYLYNN WEBB

N

ew to this year’s Dogwood Trails is Visit Palestine’s Fairy Garden Hunt in Davey Dogwood Park. Trails move along 29 fairy locations. Each contestant must come up with a story, of up to 200 words, about his or her fairy lodging. “We want to encourage people to get out of their cars and into the forest,” said Mary Raum, tourism marketing manager for Visit Palestine. “What better way than a fairy garden hunt?” Dogwood has more than five miles of driving trails, but Raum wanted more people to get out of their cars and see the Dogwood trees hidden from the asphalt. “There are some really beautiful Dogwood trees, beyond view of the driving trails,” Raum said. “People who stay in their cars never see them.” For the Fairy Garden Project, contestants – using biodegradable items like popsicles sticks, twigs, and rocks – have built tiny cottages, miniature gardens, and tree houses for fairy dwellings along the park’s walking trails. “It will encourage locals to explore Davey Dogwood Park in a new way,” Raum said. After Dogwood Trails, Raum and her team will collect all non-biodegradable materials for people to use on a fall fairy garden. She hopes the event becomes annual. To encourage participation, the Palestine Herald Press is offering cash prizes for first-, second- and third-place - $100, $50, and $25 respectively. Everyone is encouraged to participate and explore the dogwoods in Davey Dogwood Park during Dogwood Trails.

The Legend of the Dogwood There is a legend, that at the time of the Crucifixion, the dogwood had been the size of the oak and other forest trees. So firm and strong was the tree, that it was chosen as the timber for the cross. To be used thus for such a cruel purpose greatly distressed the tree, and Jesus, while nailed upon it, sensed this, and in His gentle pity for all sorrow and suffering, said to the dogwood: “Because of your regret and pity for My suffering, never again shall the dogwood tree grow large enough to be used as a cross. Henceforth, it shall be slender and bent and twisted, and its blossoms shall be in the form of a cross … two long and two short petals. In the center of the outer edge of each petal, there will be nail prints, brown with rust and stained with red, and in the center of the flower will be a crown of thorns, and all who see it will remember.”

Gilligan’s Island: The Musical SPECIAL TO HERALD-PRESS

P

alestine Community Theatre’s spring production of Gilligan’s Island: The Musical, directed by Michael Cook, opens Friday, March 29. A complimentary reception at 6:30 p.m. precedes curtain at 7:30 p.m. This comedic musical, based on the iconic TV show, will run for two weekends, Mar. 29-31 and April 5-7 in Palestine at the historic Texas Theatre, thanks to show sponsor, Nucor VulcraftGrapeland. In two acts covering 120 minutes the S.S. Minnow crew and passengers shipwreck on a remote Pacific island. The seven castaways build huts and begin to explore their surroundings. They discover strange hieroglyphics in a spooky cave, which speak of an ancient legend. The weather gets rough, Gilligan foils the best-laid of the castaway’s rescue plans…romance develops…the castaways have an out-of-this-world encounter. It’s fun, wacky, and entertaining with 18 original, tuneful, and memorable songs. The cast consists of Collin Pierson-Lodygowski as Gilligan, Bruce Grimsley as The Skipper, Tom White as Thurston Howell, Linda McDonald as Lovey

Howell, Rachel Bossier as Ginger, John Lamb as The Professor and Brandie Derr as Mary Ann. The cast and crew have also been invited to take the show on the road. They will perform as part of the Trinity Star Arts Council’s season in Teague on April 13 and 14 at the Teague High School auditorium. (http://www. trinitystarartscouncil.org/index.html) Tickets for the Palestine performances are available at www.thetexastheater.com or locally at the Chamber of Commerce, the Visitors Center, and Discount Pools. For more information, call 903-922-1126 and leave a message.

Chamber hosting art gallery, youth art show at Dogwood Trails BY PENNYLYNN WEBB community@palestineherald.com Art and Music are the new themes for the Palestine Dogwood Festival, sponsored by the Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce, which will sponsor two art shows during the festival weekend. Among the attractions: a professional popup art gallery, March 22-23, in a covered tent in The Redlands parking lot at Oak and John Streets. The reception is the perfect way to kick off this year’s festival, an 81-year-old tradition and give it a new twist, said Chamber Director Michele Merryman Bell. “The goal is to bring together art lovers, those who want to love art – and those who love those who love art – in a relaxed and festive environment,” she said. Artist statewide will bring their work in a variety of genres to show and sell. A reception to meet the artists will run 7 to 9 p.m. March 22, with Alexander Gregory on classical guitar. Ben E. Keith will provide beverages; bites provided by Brookshires. Admission for the reception is $10 per person. The chamber will also host a Youth Art Show in the Carnegie Library, 502 North Queen St. “The Youth Art Show seemed like an organic idea since they are the future of our community,” Merryman Bell said. “The arts help kids develop on many fundamental levels: creativity, focus, and confidence. It can improve academic performance. It’s important for them to come together and showcase their talents.” Special consideration will go to artwork that follows the festival’s theme: music and dogwoods. A receptions for young artists, and their parents, participating in the Dogwood Trails Youth Art Show was held Wednesday. Artwork will hang in the Carnegie Library for the three weekends of Dogwood Trails, March 23 and 24, March 30 and 31, and April 6 and 7. It’s available for viewing from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided and ribbons awarded. For more information, contact the Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce at 903-729-6066.

A new face for Dogwood in 2019 BY PENNYLYNN WEBB

“It’s a combination of art and nature. Themes to each of the weekends and the festival are seemingly working in tandem with one another.”

~ Michele Merryman-Bell, Chamber of Commerce Director

C

elebrating its 81st anniversary, the Dogwood Trails Festival is the state’s longest running Dogwood Festival. It all happens in Palestine’s charming Historic Downtown and Old Town district. The festival kicks off the first of three weekends with locals and guests celebrating the beautiful Dogwood blooms of East Texas. Since 1938, Palestine has celebrated the first sign of spring – the blooming dogwood tree – with an annual festival. Each year, Palestine puts on the Dogwood Trails Festival the last two weeks of March and the first weekend in April. How did it all start? In the spring of 1938, Charles W. Wooldridge, the power company manager, and Eugene Fish, a local bank president, met for a casual cup of coffee. Commenting on the almost unique beauty of the area’s dogwood trees, the men agreed Palestine should have a dogwood trail. Inspired, Wooldridge visited the local newspaper, suggesting not only creating the trail but also inviting outsiders to visit and enjoy the scenic splendor. Newspaper articles throughout the state drew more than 20,000 visitors to Palestine the first year. Attendance doubled the second year and the event became an annual staple. During the early years, the trails were roughly routed over uncovered country roads where sightseers could see the beautiful blooms. Eventually local landowners E.W. and H.R. Link gave visitors access to land full of blossoms, allowing proper, yet crudely cut, trails to be constructed. The first true trail opened in 1941. In February 1944, the event moved to a central spot, after M.A. Davey, a Palestine oilman, deeded 254 acres, now known as the Davey Dogwood Park, to Anderson County. Today, this park has more than five and a half miles of hard-surfaced roads, winding through a dazzling display of dogwood trees with white and pink blooms. Dogwood trees native to Palestine are the white cornus florida, which grow along the east coast, parts of the Gulf of Mexico, and northeast Texas. Palestine and the surrounding area boasts one of the highest concentrations of cornus florida dogwoods in Texas. Over the years, the Texas Dogwood Trails celebration has drawn thousands of tourists. This year’s Dogwood Trails Festival is scheduled to start March 23.

The Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the event. Gates open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the downtown festival is $1 per person. Children 12 and under enter free. Proceeds from the gates will be donated to local non-profit organizations. Entry to the KidsZone is free. The event will include a parade, arts, crafts, retail vendors, food, a beer garden, a kids zone, live entertainment and music, and art galleries. “We are moving away from the status quo festival of get your funnel cake around the corner, to an upscale arts and music festival, with art shows, buskers performing for tips, concert in the Old Town Hollow, and an art competition that will include local youth,” said Michele Merryman Bell, director of the Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce. “It may be a couple of years before it really evolves into what we are envisioning, but we are excited about our new direction.” The festival will still include the parade, food vendors, arts and crafts booths, and a children’s play area. But it also will feature displays by artists statewide, a youth art show, and street performers throughout downtown. “We will have a special area, or tent, for the art showcase,” Merryman Bell said. “And the buskers will be true street performers who open their cases and work the crowd for tips.” William Young has agreed to create an artistic poster as the event’s main keepsake, like the “Blue Dog” posters used for the New Orleans Jazz Festival. He has agreed to provide art for the festival for the next five years. “We’ll use the art to make posters, postcards, and T-shirts people can purchase,” Merryman Bell said. “A limited number will be numbered and signed by the artist.” On the Old Hollow Sawdust Stage, acoustic music will start at noon, with headliners taking the stage at 6 p.m. This year’s concert music lineup includes Curtis Grimes. Beyond the festival, there will be two more weeks of activities for locals and visitors. “Mary Raum, director of Visit Palestine, has worked very hard to arrange events and activities that promote the Dogwood Trials,” Merryman Bell said. “It’s a combination of art and nature. Themes to each of the weekends and the festival are seemingly working in tandem with one another.”

18th Annual Old Time Music and Dulcimer Festival Thursday Evening: Pipp Gillette and Lloyd Wright Pipp Gillette lives and works on the family ranch near Lovelady, Texas, where his grandfather started raising cattle and cotton in 1912. Pipp and his brother Guy received the Western Heritage Award for Outstanding Traditional Western Album of 2011 and the 2013 Western Heritage Award for Outstanding Original Western Composition for their performance of the Waddie Mitchell song, “Trade Off.” Drawing on a lifelong interest in Western history and music, Pipp plays traditional cowboy music on guitar, banjo, harmonica, and bones. Pipp’s first solo CD, Singing Songs by Waddie and Pipp received the Western Heritage Award for Outstanding Traditional Western Album of 2016. His newest CD, Pipp Gillette with Lloyd Wright, was released fall 2018. Having grown up listening to the music of Guy and Pipp Gillette, Lloyd Wright was honored to join Pipp in several musical endeavors in the past few years. He has performed with Pipp at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering and Elko, Nevada, and several times at The Old Mill Music Festival and at the Camp Street Cafe in Crockett, Texas. Lloyd, being an amazing multiinstrumentalist, brings much to the musical table. He has been playing, performing and teaching for over 20 years and is a past National Champion on the mountain dulcimer. We are thrilled to have these two wonderful entertainers kick off this year’s festival as they present our Thursday evening concert.

SPECIAL TO THE HERALD-PRESS The first Palestine Dogwood Jamboree production of 2019 will take place Saturday, March 23, at 7 p.m. at the Palestine High School auditorium, two blocks east of Hwy 19 south and Loop 256. Tickets at the door are $15 for adults and $6 for children, six to 10. Children under five attend free. “The March show is one of my favorite,” producer Dan Manuel said. “If you like classic country music, you will love this show.” This first Jamboree will feature Texas recording artist Michael Jimenez. Jimenez has performed on numerous Opry’s and country music shows throughout Texas, as well as in other states. Other guests include the former producer of the Palestine Opry, Jimmy Sims; Jessie Calloway, and George Lester. “Classic Country music will fill the auditorium that evening,” Manuel said. “Performances by the artists will really bring back memories of a few years ago, when some these songs were leading the country charts with number one hits.” Show regulars like Joe Hancock, “Flo,” Sissy Perry, Mike Kellogg, Jodi Brown, “Jus C. Leroy and Goober,” and Manuel will also perform at the show.

Three local youth, under 18, will compete in the Jamboree Talent search contest. The winner will move to the finals on Dec. 7 to compete for “Artist of the Year.” The award includes a cash award and a plaque that names them “Artist of the Year for 2019.” To audition for the March show, call 903-724-2556 or 903-729-7080. Those auditioning for the talent search contest must be under 18. There is no entry fee for auditioning. “We have booked several tour groups for this show,” Manuel said. “The quality of the Jamboree and the performers are equal, in many

businesses will be given away. For additional information about the show, or to purchase advanced tickets at a discounted rate of $12.50, call 903-729-7080, or 903-7242556.

Tour historic Catholic Church BY PENNYLYNN WEBB

The beautiful windows of Scared Heart Catholic Church, 503 North Queen Street, in Palestine, will be on display this Saturday for a Stain Glass Tour. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., locals and visitors can revel in the beauty of this historical church. This tour is free. Sacred Heart Catholic Church celebrated its 125th anniversary of its dedication last year. Sacred Heart Catholic Church lies in the heart of downtown Palestine. This beautiful historic church, built in the Victorian Gothic style, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It is one of five churches in Texas built in this architectural style. The Catholic church was built in 1874, and named after St. Joseph, the patron saint of working men. In the same year, the International and Great-Northern Railroad announced they were coming to Palestine. Fire destroyed St. Joseph’s in 1890, and construction on the current building started. The church’s architect was Nicholas J. Clayton, also known for the historic Bishop’s Palace in Galveston. His original blue prints are stored at the University of Texas at Austin. The 675,000 bricks for the church were molded

by hand and baked on-site from mud brought by wagon from the Trinity River. The historic building has plastered interior walls, varnished oak, and knotty pine. The stained glass windows are from Italy and France, many donated in honor or memory of local families. The ceiling, made of pine, has no nails; wooden pegs hold it together. The 40 pews in the sanctuary and altar rail are original to the church. The completed church, shaped like a cross, was dedicated on June 18, 1893, and named Sacred Heart. The mural, “The Transfiguration of Christ,” was painted in the 1920s by an unknown artist, and retouched in 1946. In 1935, the wooden altar, used since 1890, was replaced by the marble altar. The two wooden side altars also were replaced with marble altars. A new marble altar was finished a few weeks ago, just in time for the church’s anniversary. On April 25, 1926, a new Pilcher pipe organ replaced the old reed organ. It is still used for weekend masses. The church’s confessional is original to the church; it has been modified, however, and

soundproofed. Today, Sacred Heart host confessionals at least once a week, with set times at 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The church chimes play on the hour; they also play several tunes throughout the day. There are two masses on Saturday, and three on Sunday. For more information, call Sacred Heart Catholic Church, (903) 729-2463, or e-mail: shpalestine1893@gmail.com.
