Dan Educate was born and raised in Chicago’s inner city. His family moved to the lower eastside of New York where he attended high school. Upon graduation, Dan was scouted by several major league baseball teams resulting in tryouts in the famous Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, New York, The Polo Grounds, and Yankee Stadium in New York City. However, it was the Cleveland Indians organization that he signed with, where he played for a couple of years. When his family returned to Chicago, Dan married and secured employment with the Chicago Police Department. They recognized his excellent communication skills and promoted him to the position of Safety Officer, which consisted of giving safety speeches to civic groups, high schools and broadcasting traffic reports on WGN Radio. During his stay with the Chicago Police Department, he was also ble to sell insurance parttime; and he soon discovered that the insurance industry could reward his desire to serve people, while giving secured income and benefits (as the police department did) to support his growing family of seven. In 1965 he became a full-time agent for State Farm Insurance. Senior Pastor Andrew D. Singleton, Jr. Victory Apostolic Church

Andrew D. Singleton, Jr. is a devoted family man, a servant of God, and he loves

and ministers to the people of God. Senior Pastor Singleton was saved in 1978 at the Apostolic Church of God (ACOG) in Chicago under the leadership of the late Bishop

Arthur M. Brazier, whose son Dr. Byron T. Brazier is now pastor and carrying on his father’s legacy.

Pastor Singleton was ordained in 1989 and later felt the leading of God to start

a church in Chicago’s southern suburbs. In obedience to that call, Victory Apostolic Church (VAC) was began in August 1996 with 12 members. The church experienced

such an enormous growth in Chicago Heights, IL, that in February 2009 they were able to move to their current location, a $20 million dollar, 2,500 seat sanctuary in Matteson, IL. In 19 years, God has blessed Victory to grow to several thousand members with over 60 ministries. Additionally, he is the chairperson of the Victory Associa-

tion, whose mission is to transform churches by training church leaders. Pastors and leaders from 20 churches participate in an annual conference.

Pastor Singleton holds a B.S. Degree in Accounting from the University of Illinois at Chicago. In addition, he

is also a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Financial Planner. He has also taken classes for five years at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, and is a 2002 graduate of the Master of Divinity program at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, IL.

He was Controller and Finance Vice President of several community-based social service agencies in the

Pastor Singleton has served his community as the first Chairman of the Vanderpoel Elementary Local School

Chicagoland area. He has worked not only in Chicago but throughout the south suburbs.

Council, along with being listed in Sterling’s Who’s Who Directory Executive Edition. He is a member of the South

Suburban PADS Board, an organization that provides food, shelter and employment to the homeless. Pastor Singleton is also the chairperson of the South Suburban Community Development Corporation (SSCDC), which has trained over 200 young men and women in the construction trade.

Pastor Singleton is the founder and chairperson for “A Taste of Victory” (ATOV) which is an annual event held

in Matteson, where over 500 medical screenings are performed for youth and adults. ATOV promotes over 50 small businesses in a festive environment.

Pastor Singleton was honored in August 2015 to receive the Spiritual Leader of the Year Award from the Matteson Business Association. He works closely with the local political leaders to improve the southern suburbs of Chicago.

But most of all, Senior Pastor Andrew D. Singleton, Jr., loves and cherishes his wife of 41 years, Brenda; their

three children Takara, Karena, and Andrew III, all of whom are saved, serve in the church and have completed

their college degrees. He and his wife are proud grandparents to their granddaughters, Brianna and Ava; and grandsons, William, Blake, and Justin.

Clydell and Betty Hodges-Topp

Founders of Topp & Topp Insurance Agency

Married for 25 years, a power couple, Betty Hodge-Topp and

her husband, Clydell Topp, continue to help thousands of clients in

multiple states to maintain financial freedom through their expert

and holistic insurance business that is pillared in Chicago’s historic Beverly community.

A blended family of five, the multi-state licensed Topp & Topp

Insurance Agency is located 9003 South Western in a freestanding building where numerous awards of excellence adorn the walls.

Born in Pontotoc, Mississippi where his grandparents owned land. Mr. Topp came to Chicago when he was

15 years old to live with his mother. He is a graduate of Englewood High School. After joining the Army and serving in Vietnam, Topp came back to Chicago where he worked in a printing company then went to Sears & Roebuck as a security guard. He began with Met Life in 1971 and retired in 2005.

The Topps, both of whom have been nationally and internationally recognized by the Million Dollar Round

Table (MDRT), a trade association that uplifts agents exhibiting the best and ethical insurance practices.

Their MDRT membership and performance enabled the Topps to travel at the companies expense to resorts

in Hawaii, Switzerland, Vienna, Monte Carlo, Paris, London and Rome as well as resorts in Florida, Arizona and California.

Mrs. Hodges-Topp was born on Chicago’s South Side in the Woodlawn community. She graduated from

South Shore High School. She attended one semester at Olive-Harvey College and began working at Sears as a customer service representative. It was there that Ms. Hodges developed the taste for sales.

Ms. Hodges joined Met Life Insurance as a sales representative, in 1980. The Topps began their own agency

in 2006. The Topps are licensed in 15-20 states, and they take pride in building and maintaining close relationships with their clients. “It is important for families to do financial planning for the future,” Mr. Topp said nodding

his head to his wife who works closely by his side. This couple has helped to create generational wealth for thousands of their clients.

And, as if Mrs. Hodges-Topp, who has appeared in Ebony, Black Enterprise and Essence magazines isn’t

busy enough, she has resumed her free workshops for women only.

She teaches them about financial freedom, self esteem, the importance of setting aside money for them-

selves, the ABS’s of 401 (k’s), how to break out of the cycle of debt including the art of consolidating their debts. The workshops, she said, is a way of giving back and helping women find their purpose in life.

Shannon King is the Founder of Canna Entice, a brand created to showcase the

different aspects of CBD and Cannabis infused dining experiences. Shannon King has

worked in health care for more than 25 years and currently serves as the Director of Operations at Wakanna LLC, is a Registered Nurse and a member of the American Cannabis Nursing Association.

Timuel Dixon Black Author & Historian

Q. Who is Timuel Black” A. Timuel Dixon Black was born December 7, 1918 in Birmingham, Alabama. My family brought me to Chicago in August 1919 right after the 1919 riot in Lake Michigan. That’s the early story of who Timuel Black is. I have lived on the south side of Chicago first in the neighborhood called the Black Belt by Robert Abbott, now called Bronzeville. (Currently, occupied by middle-class whites, blacks and Asians and one of the mosted coveted areas in Chicago). I also lived in the Hyde Park-Kenwood area. I lived there after Hansberry vs Lee. (1939, 311 U.S. 32 challenged the restrictive covenant that banned Negroes from purchasing or leasing land in the Washington Park sub-division of Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood.) (Carl Hansberry was world renowned playwright, Lorraine Hansberry’s father.) (Later Shelley vs Kramer, 334 US 1948, arose after a Negro family purchased a house in St. Louis that was subject to restrictive covenant. The resulting Supreme Court ruling made restrictive covenant unenforceable by law anywhere in the US.) That’s a brief sketch of who Timuel Black is. Q. You mentioned your two books. What are their titles? A. Bridges of Memory. These two volumes cover three generations of African-Americans who grew up in Chicago. That would be my generation who fled the South during and a little after World War I; the second generation is my children; and the third volume is my grand-children. Those included are people who spent most or all of their lives in Chicago. Q. You mentioned the optimism and sense of spirituality our ancestors had who traveled over the seas to get here. A. They didn’t travel. They were kidnapped. They didn’t volunteer. More than is usually mentioned took their lives and fought back than actually made it here. Their attitude was “Before I be your slave I’ll be buried in my grave”. We were treated as property not as human beings. Chattel slavery it was called. Others who survived both the slave vessels and the brutality of the South adopted a spiritual attitude about themselves, and a responsibility for others besides themselves; their future families; their children, grand-children and great-grandchildren. They envisioned the future and bravely kept on keeping on. Q. What does your ideal black community look like? A. It would be similar to the Black Belt community of the 20’s, 30’s & 40’s. In that community the black residents controlled the basic institutions of the community, social, cultural, economic and political. I never worked outside the Black Belt community until I went away to college. We controlled our resources; the economic resources and our political. We fled the south for three basic reasons: 1. To be able to fight back when we were attacked by members of the Ku Klux Klan. 2. To be able to vote. 3. To get a quality education for our children. During the period that I described during World War I and World War II blacks outvoted by a percentage the European immigrants. It was a cultural and political fact that existed that neighbors would say to each other “Did you vote today?” The person who they asked would be embarrassed if they had not voted. So the voting created a power base of politics that elected the first black U.S. Congressman of Illinois, Oscar De Priest; fast forward to the first black and woman Senator, Carol Mosley Braun, and much later the first black President of the United States. The first ten black millionaires in the country were created during this period when blacks controlled their social, cultural, economic and political institutions. Jazz was born on the south-side of Chicago. Nat King Cole and other great musicians came out of this renaissance. At Quinn Chapel gospel music made it’s mark. Q. How did we get divided? A. The first problem was over population or density of population in the Black Belt. This was relieved somewhat by the win over restricted covenants. Negroes who could moved out of restricted areas. The second great migration occurred during and after WWII. They were pushed off the land by the innovation of new agricultural technology. One machine could now pick more cotton than 100 individual pickers. These families were larger than those of the first migration whose family size seldom exceeded three and who lived in southern cities. These larger families of eight and nine members also lacked education and had little exposure to urban areas. School systems were insensitive to the needs of these newcomers. Without sensitive teachers and curiculums a separation by

class emerged as the wave of the second migration moved into less desirable areas. Enter public housing where large enclaves of those without jobs and education could be contained. Large families from the second migration began to either not vote at all or to vote the way they were told to vote by white and black political bosses. The added population and diminishing unskilled job opportunities flamed the fire. Unemployed women in public housing could not get welfare if males over eighteen lived in the household. Men came around less and families began to decay at a rapid rate. Increased drug accessability and a rise in super-gangs escalated the demise of the black family. Q. How do we rebuild, rekindle, reignite by 2029 those social, cultural, economic and political institutions that you were empowered in? A. It is important for the younger people who have the advantage of going to school and being absorbed into the system not forget the legacy of history that paved their way. Those who know the history and their value and the contributions of our parents must do as they did for us and keep on keeping on by leaving a door open for others who are coming behind us. Historically, we have done the miraculous and the impossible many times. I once asked my students when they went shopping what they were looking for? One of the bright ones said, “I look for the best item for the cheapest price.” And that is exactly the human capital the slave traders were searching for. My generation knew the value of their human capital. They knew that they were the cream of the crop. Know the value of your human capital and the full value of your ancestor’s contributions to America and the world. Then keep on keeping on until you get your full due. Chicago Area Autopsy Servcies Inc The death of a family member is always a distressing time. This is equally so whether death is sudden and unexpected, or whether it was a slow and painful event. Family members are frequently at a loss as to the cause and the circumstances of the death. Many of these deaths occur outside of the hospital, perhaps at home or at a nursing home. While the Medical Examiner’ås Office occasionally assumes jurisdiction in non-traumatic cases, the Office does not have the manpower to evaluate all of these deaths. Hospital pathologists are often reluctant to perform autopsies on individualswho die in that hospital’s emergency room, or who die at home or at a nursing home if the deceased was not previously a patient at their particular hospital, or if their family physician is not on that hospital’s staff. Family members who sought answers as to the cause of death have had no one to whom to turn. Our goal is to perform a quality, academically-based autopsy that will inventory all of the pathologic findings which existed at the time of death, and will determine why the deceased died and why they died at that particular point in time. Our findings and report will be completely objective. Our task is to answer questions regarding the cause of death and the circumstances which led up to the death, rather than to critique the quality or appropriateness of the medical care rendered to the deceased. Based on the Southside of Chicago since 1988, Dr. Yetta L. McCullom is a board certified periodontist specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of gum disease. Dr. McCullom comes from a family of accomplished dentists, with her father and brother both having worked in the field, and her great uncle being the first licensed dentist in the Virgin Islands. Following in their footsteps, Dr. McCullom graduated from Howard University in 1983 with a degree in Biology, and proceeded to earn her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Howard University’s College of Dentistry in 1985. As a 2nd generation graduate from a historically black college, Dr. McCullom is proud to have the legacy continue on with her youngest daughter now attending Howard University as a 3rd generation undergraduate. After deciding to professionally concentrate in periodontics, Dr. McCullom went on to be the first and only African American woman to be accepted into and complete the Master of Science program at (the now closed) Northwestern University Dental School, with a Certificate of Periodontics in 1990. Since then, Dr. McCullom has been diligent in advancing her education in the field of periodontics, while aiming to implement the latest periodontal practices and procedures for her patients. Along with taking credits at the esteemed Misch Implant Institute and the Dawson Center for Dental Education, Dr. McCullom has also served as an instructor at the Institute of Advanced Laser Dentistry. As an instructor, Dr. McCullom has been able to further understand the application of laser treatment more thoroughly, while fulfilling her passion of teaching dentists how to best treat periodontal diseases. As an impressed and supportive advocate for laser therapy, Dr. McCullom has incorporated LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) as a treatment of her patients’ periodontal medical needs. Jerline Lambert was born in West Helena, Arkansas. Adopted by a loving couple when she was ten months old, she grew up in an environment that nurtured her natural skills and interest. Associated Pastor to Youth of Covenant United Church of Christ Rev. Dr. Carmin A. Frederick-James is zealous about her work with Youth, particularly teenagers. Her most recent work involves a 12-week Mental Fitness Program, specifically for High School Teenagers. The Mental Fitness program is in partnership with Erika Kendrick, author of the book “Who Moved My Happy?” and is held at Covenant United Church of Christ, where Rev. Carmin (as she is affectionately called) serves as the Associate Pastor to Youth. Each week in the safe and intimate space created at Covenant United Church of Christ, teens are challenged to examine their mental fitness from a different perspective. In May of 2019 Rev. Carmin completed her Doctor of Ministry project entitled “IN TO ME SEE: A Sermonic Model for Uncovering Intimacy in Teens.” In her project she addresses the needs of African American teens deeply affected by the sexual violence portrayed in media formats, a culture of intolerance of others, and what has been described as the ‘enslavement of intimacy.’ She looks forward to additional programs designed to restore the mental, relational, emotional, and spiritual health of today’s teens as a way of returning to the intimacy that God desires for and with each of us. Her next project is a book of 40 devotionals entitled “IN TO ME SEE: Prayers, Plays and Practices for Restoring Intimacy” Rev. Carmin holds a Doctor of Ministry from Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana a Master of Divinity from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology-Virginia Union University, a Master of Health Sciences in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Governors State University, a Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Science, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She was ordained by the Chicago Metropolitan Association in March of 2014. Rev. Carmin is wife to Mr. Durell James and the mother of a blending family including four children--Kristan, Van, Deanna, Adin and two dogs, Grayson and Phoebe. Valaycia Muhammad - ”The Kid Trainer” Founder of Chicago Fit 4 Life

Valaycia Muhammad is a 13 year old personal trainer/fitness instructor. She has studied closely under Siddiqu “The Personal Trainer”. Valaycia believes that she can assist young people with not only hitting their fitness goals but understanding how exercise will forever be apart of their life. Valaycia wants young people to inspire older people on the importance of maintaining ones body and being a better version of ones self. Being an instructor for classes as small as 2 people and as many as 2,000 has opened her mindset on how exercise brings families together. She has personally witnessed three generations working out along side each other. With the rise of childhood obesity and obesity related diseases affecting young people, the Chicago Fit 4 Life organization decided to construct a solution. Valaycia Muhammad also leads a group of pre-teens who conduct their own exercise classes. Her group is called The Chicago Fit 4 Life Kids and they have made appearances on ABC News, WCIU News, & WCIU The Jam. Valaycia and her team led a workout class at Soldier Field with an attendance of 2,000+ people in 2018. Valaycia has recently written her first book which is a cook book for kids. The Chicago Fit 4 Life Children’s Cook Book has healthy recipes that young people can follow with their parents. Valaycia is a kid trainer with her own workout class entitled Born 2 Move. It is a weekly class that is featured at Melanie Fitness in Dolton, IL. Valaycia Muhammad is better known as Layci “The Kid Trainer”. Layci has a background in dance, starting her career at Mayfair Academy. Recently, Layci attended The National Track & Field tournament in Sacramento, CA. Walker Harris Jr

Founder of Harris Ice Company At a very young age, I aspired to be a businessman. My desire was given framework during my high school years while I worked after school and on weekends for an African American businessman. After high school, while taking an extended vacation in Chicago with my sister and her husband, I saw and took advantage of an opportunity to make my dream a reality. At the age of eighteen, City Ice, an ice distribution warehouse center, employed me as an ice bagger. I quickly learned the ice business and its distribution process. Several months after my employment, I learned that one of the truck drivers who was distributing ice for City Ice was retiring and was looking to sell his route. At the time, drivers were called ice dealers and owned the customer list that they distributed ice to. The driver owned an impressive thirty customers. I purchased the drivers list of customers and started my own company. Harris Ice Company officially started March 15, 1972. After a few years of delivering ice, I learned that City Ice was in the process of closing the distribution warehouse. I purchased the warehouse in the fall of 1973. I continued to deliver ice in my pick up truck and began soliciting new business for myself and two other drivers whom I had hired. By the end of 1978, I had purchased five refrigerated trucks and continued to upgrade the plant so that I could manufacture larger quantities of ice on the premises and meet the demands of my customers. A storage room and a garage for parking the trucks were added. And in 1981, an office building was constructed and annexed to the old warehouse building. Through the years, I have continued to upgrade and purchase new automated equipment. Today, Harris Ice Company provides service to wholesale, retail and commercial businesses including the movie and television industry. My company manufactures and distributes cube, block, crushed and snow cone ice. It is certified as a Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) with the City of Chicago, Cook County, the Illinois Department of Central Management and the Chicago Minority Supplier Development Council. Despite my demanding schedule as an entrepreneur, I am deeply committed to serving my church and my community. Through God’s grace, hard work, determination and the unwavering support of family and friends, I have become the businessman that I am today. Founder and creator of Batter & Berries Restaurant A board certified physician, Tanya is most known as the founder and creator of Batter & Berries restaurant in Chicago. Born and raised in Chicago, Tanya attended Kenwood High school, the University of Illinois Champaign, and the University of Illinois Chicago for medical school. Although she has excelled as a physician, Tanya always had a strong entrepreneurial spirit. She was raised in an entrepreneurial family and she is always looking to turn an idea into a business. In 1999 while on a breakfast date, she looked at her fiancé, Craig Richardson, and said; We should open a Breakfast Restaurant one day. That idea however would have to wait until after marriage, establishing a career in medicine, and having 4 kids! In 2011 Tanya took a physicians position that allowed her to work 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off each month. During the 2 weeks off she began her research into the restaurant industry and market. Later that year she came to Craig and said we should open that breakfast restaurant now. She put a team together, found a space and signed a lease and thought of a name. She later designed the interior, which included hand crafting each table with its own unique design. The doors opened in May of 2012. Today, Batter & Berries is one of the top rated Breakfast/Brunch restaurants in Chicago. It draws a diverse clientele from all over the world. Many top entertainers, professional athletes, business and political elite stop in whenever they’re in town.
