“Luck is when opportunity meets preparation.” This is the philosophy Keeana Barber lives by. From the age of 15, Keeana Barber has been preparing herself to reach her goals as a successful entrepreneur. Unsure of her direct path, Keeana attended Northwestern University in 2000 with a focus on developing her business skills. After graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Learning & Organizational Change, Keeana worked for Monar Consulting, an executive consulting firm in Evanston. There she handled correspondence with large accounts including General Mills, Chicago Sun Times and the UIC Pavilion. Although she continuously honed her business skills, Keeana was still un- Keeana Barber sure of the direct path she would take in business. Then a life changing moment happened, her oldest brother, Bobby Barber was senselessly killed on the South Side of Chicago. In utter shock by his death Keeana relied on her spiritual sense to guide her in the next direction of her life, which would be the world of entertainment. Her brother had recently started a company, What’s Da Bizniz on the West Coast and had mentioned his high aspirations for the company to her. Fueled by his legacy Keeana overtook the company and began throwing events in her brother’s honor. For 3 years Keeana continued to work at Monar Consulting as she launched her newly found business. After 3 years of promoting events Keeana came to a crossroads. Should she continue in the entertainment industry or launch her own marketing and promotional firm. She chose the latter. In 2008, in an effort to attain more corporate clients, Keeana launched a subsidiary of What’s Da Bizniz aptly named WDB Marketing. Her new focus was now on visual marketing, helping clients with brand identify, graphic design and marketing collateral. With hard work and perseverance Keeana went on to secure accounts such as The Regal Theater, Mr. G’s and The Harold Washington Cultural Center. Keeana quickly expanded her services beyond the entertainment industry working with organizations such as Kids Off the Block, DuSable Museum, The Harold Washington Cultural Center and Beggar’s Pizza. Keeana credits her success to her learning experiences along the way, creating a vision, focusing all energy towards that vision and creating a talented team to help her execute her plan. To date, Keeana along with her team, has had the pleasure to serve over 500 small businesses and entrepreneurs in the area. Even with the new found success Keeana’s mission to create her vision into a dynasty was unfulfilled. In her heart she always wanted to help educate the community and be a voice against the senseless violence occurring in our community. In 2011, after a team brainstorm, Keeana founded What’s Da Bizniz Newspaper, along with partners James Wheeler, Leah Barber and Artriss Williams. With a mission to engage, educate and empower, the publication focuses on providing free resources to the community, articles that engage and challenge readers to do more, and advertisements showcasing local businesses that can prosper with the help of the community. Within the first year the newspaper’s circulation increased from 5,000 to 20,000 free copies and has been embraced as the new “voice of the community”. With two companies in tow and new ideas arising everyday look for Ms. Barber to be a rising force in the business world. Bril Barrett - Founder of M. A.D.D. Rythms Tap Academy
Bril Barrett works hard and taps harder. He has dedicated his life to making a difference in the lives of youth and being the change in his community. He has used the artform of tap to make a life for himself. He started M.A.D.D . Rhythms Tap Academy 10 years ago as a volunteer program to keep young boys out of trouble. It soon grew to include girls and later became a professional tapdance company. Those first children, along with Bril, are now the instructors of M.A.D.D Rythms. After School Matters, Chicago Public Schools, Better Boys Foundation, After School All Stars, Family Focus Lawdale and The Chicago Community Trust are among the partners who have Bril Barrett aligned with Bril in support of his mission. Kimi L. Ellen is the co-founding partner of Benford Brown & Associates, LLC one of the largest, African-American women-owned accounting firms in the country, with offices in Chicago and Bolingbrook, Illinois. She founded the firm in 1996 with a fellow Deloitte and Touche’, LLP staff, Alyssia Benford. She has devoted a substantial portion of her career to providing audit, accounting, consulting, and tax services to state and local governments as well as not for profit organizations. As a result, Kimi has acquired several advanced skills such as not-for-profit financial audits, single audits, government compliance audits, accounting software implementation, forensic audits, and not-for-profit accounting. Kimi L. Ellen Kimi is a licensed CPA in the State of Illinois. She is also an active member in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Illinois CPA Society, and the National Association of Black Accountants –Division of Firms. She is a three-time nominee of the Volunteer of the Year award of the Illinois CPA Society and currently serves as the president of the Southeast Chicago Chamber of Commerce, President of the Windy City Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, and Social Chairman of the Lake Shore Chapter of the Links, Incorporated. Nathan Kirkwood III was raised on Chicago’s Southside by his father, Nathan Kirkwood Jr. and mother Antoinette A. Kirkwood. His father is accountant and business owner of Nathan Kirkwood Associates/Taxes by Kirkwood. His mother is a retired educator/administrator of CPS Schools. Nathan Kirkwood III graduated from high school from Chicago’s Kenwood Academy. From there he went on to graduate from Roosevelt University with a BA Degree in Accounting before attaining a Masters Degree in Accounting from Keller Graduate School of Management. Nathan Kirkwood III has been a staff accountant and tax preparer for his father’s firm for twentytwo years. He has serviced more than seven hundred clients annually including individuals, partnerships, corporations and non for profit organizations. Kirkwood feels the key to his success has been a good name, dedication to service, empathy, compassion, fairness with his clients, Nathan Kirkwood III and a commitment to finding the answers to client needs that go beyond the scope of mere preparation. His tireless efforts include being on call 365 days when necessary to see that his clients are provided full service. Founder of Nathan Kirkwood Associates and Taxes by Kirkwood
Nathan Kirkwood Jr.’s business life can be simply stated. He is the sum total of his experiences. Beginning at nine years of age he sold Jet magazines and Chicago Defender newspapers from 6:30 – 8:30 am, before school. This work experience taught him, at a young age, the importance of getting up early for a job, selling a product and understanding how Black people appreciated him being of service to them. Later at twelve years of age, he organized his five brothers to sell Jet magazines during the year, and snow cones in front of the A&P and National Food stores on 37th , 39th and 43rd Street during the summer months. This taught him family teamwork, and how working as a family could satisfy their daily needs and supply products of substance to the community. These early experiences of getting an early start on a job, learning how income is produced, Nathan Kirkwood Jr working with others, and being of service within the Black community were to be the foundation he was to carry to every job thereafter. In college, while working at the U.S. Postal Service, he learned teamwork, chain of command, and interpersonal relationships. This gave him the confidence to embrace more challenging jobs as a regulatory examiner of financial institutions for the State of Illinois, and economic development officer for the City of Chicago. He also sold investment products through Waddell & Reed, and insurance products through Prudential Insurance Co. This concentrated involvement in the fields of economic development, finance, insurance and sales would prove to be invaluable as a banker, and resulted in his elevation to the position as Vice President of Economic Development at Gateway National Bank at 79th and Stony Island in Chicago. From Gateway and staying in the Black community, he continued as a Banker at Pullman and later Highland Community Bank. It was at Highland Bank that his dreams of utilizing all of his past experience came together, and the business firm of Nathan Kirkwood Associates and Taxes by Kirkwood was founded. He knew that he wanted to be in the community that had supported him as a child of the Black Community. He knew he wanted to have his business in the community that as a banker he serviced through the financing of its homes, cars, and provided its children with college finances. He knew his business had to be where he shopped, lived and worshipped his God. He knew his business had to be easily accessible by foot or by car, ie, the Black community on 79th Street. He knew the community would identify with him. He knew the business would be one that he wanted to be passed on to family and friends. Thus, by doing so, the business would last long after his days were gone. To accomplish this, he knew he would have to do two important things: advertise and provide year round personal and friendly service. It was there that he has been able to brand the name Kirkwood over the Southside of Chicago. Nathan Kirkwood Associates and Taxes by Kirkwood for thirty-eight years have provided accounting, income tax preparation, financial and estate planning advice and consultation. It is a family owned business being passed on to Nathan Kirkwood III, MBA and presently the #1 producer. He is ably assisted by his office daughter and office manager Litha Herron. She has been with the firm for thirty years. In addition to Nathan III and Lithia, there are four hand- picked and highly trained professionals: Loretha Shortbey, At-
torney James Hooks, CPA William Hayes II, and Julian Valentine, who carry on the philosophy of Nathan Kirkwood, and who provide expert service to the Black Community. Omar S. Shareef is the founder and current president of the African American Contractors Association (AACA), a professional association dedicated to business development, professional ethics and standards, job procurement, equitable financing and bonding for minority vendors. AACA’s membership includes a diverse mixture of construction firms and contractors. Mr. Shareef has achieved national recognition for in depth labor research, practical construction training forums, legitimate and even-handed negotiations, and a thorough understanding of media and community business relations. He has headed the 350 plus membership since 1989, and the value of the contracts, which Omar S. Shareef he had facilitated and/or negotiated exceeds $200 million. In 1997, Mr. Shareef developed and implemented several programs which are still utilized by the Chicago Public Schools. They are: The Quick Pay program, designed to expedite payments to M/WBEs; The Target Market Program, designed to ensure that certain classes of work will have African American contractors to work in the CPS Capital Improvement Program. Through these efforts, the City of Chicago received national attention. Through Omar’s steadfast leadership, AACA joined forces with IIT in 1997 to help the university increase its use of minority-and women-owned business. This agreement was consummated through a contract between IIT and AACA, which resulted in the appointment of the first ever Director of Equal Opportunity/M/WBE Programs. Under Mr. Shareef’s guidance, AACA has established itself as a strong competitor among the construction community in diversity and business development training. He has brought AACA from a local organization to a national organization that has offices in Chicago, Illinois; Rockford, Illinois, Peoria, Illinois, St. Louis, Missouri; Richmond, Virginia; Indianapolis, Indiana and Detroit, Michigan. Andre Senegal recently joined the Greater Chicago New York Life General Office as an agent after over nine years experience in the financial industry. He quickly qualified for the career Life Success Award and was chosen by the Managing Partner to become a member of his Leadership Group. In 1989, Darwin was assigned to manage the Chicago Division office, replacing his mentor and friend in the financial planning business, Mr. Latrice Coleman. During 1990 and 1991, he led the Chicago office to the #1 ranking within Waddell & Reed. Darwin was responsible for managing forty-four advisors generating in excess of $1 Billion in investment assets. From 1989 to 2002, Mr. Yarborough broadcasted every Monday on V-103 and 102.7 FM, giving financial planning and investment advice to the public. He has also been a guest on local Chicago television stations. In 2006, Darwin retired from management of Waddell & Reed, but remains a financial advisor. Currently, he mentors and assists numerous clients, advisors, businesses and church groups on financial issues and developments. Darwin attributes much of his success to studying successful businessmen and mentors such as Latrice Coleman, Jim Rohn, Paul Robeson and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Much of Darwin’s success is also attributed to studying and following success and financial principles found in Biblical scriptures. After graduating from Morgan State University, he entered the field of financial service, where he remains. In September, 1978, Darwin started as a registered finance representative for Waddell & Reed. He has obtained numerous licenses in the field of financial services. In 1983, Darwin became a Waddell & Reed District Manager. He remained in this position until 1986 when he was promoted to Division Manager in Park Forest, IL. Growing up within the inner city was not easy for David. His parents have been married for thirty-seven years. They taught him core values: integrity, compassion, work ethics, a good education and persistency. David attended St. Margaret of Scotland where the principles he learned at home were reinforced. From there he went to Leo High School another Catholic school on the Southside of Chicago. There he began to excel because of the foundation that was put in place at an early age. His passion for sports made him a tri-athlete and a captain in three sports. His track and basketball team won Dave Thomas the IHSA championship in his senior year. David was also president of the student body and class valedictorian while working to pay for his education. He was offered and accepted a full academic scholarship as an Evans Scholar to U of I Champaign-Urbana, where he studied Finance within the school of Commerce & Business. While there he did an internship with the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, and was featured in the USA Today for the amount of success that he had as a college intern doing Financial Planning. It was then that he realized his passion for financial planning. He has been with Water Tower Financial Partners, LLC, a member of the Mass Mutual Financial Group for the past three and a half years. During that time, he acquired his MBA in Finance as well as his LUTCF designation.
