In my heart I believe that design always wins. Not because good always triumphs over evil (it doesn’t) or because good taste always trumps bad (it sure as hell doesn’t). I simply wouldn’t be able get up in the morning if I believed otherwise. So, longer ago than I care to admit, I took a blood oath to do what I can to ever so slightly shift the odds in favor of things that are unexpectedly interesting, stylishly strategic or just plain fun to look at. With a grateful nod to my clients, Here are some of the results. 3

Apple Print | TV | Outdoor | Direct | Web
Apple has been thinking different since the days it did business out of a garage. I’ve lent my thinking to the cause for over a decade, producing advertising and graphic design for Chiat\Day and directly for Apple. Writer Tom Witt and I have created a catalog of iconic ideas springing from the minimalist elegance of the Apple product line. I love this company.

Amaranthine Book Design
Amaranthine is greek for “color that never dies: an apt descriptor for this large-format, hardcover book featuring the aviary collection of The Museum of Boston. Photographer Mark Laita captured the specimens in over 250 plates depicting a wild diversity of color, shape and form. My design challenge: get out of the way and let nature shine.

Adperk Logo | Branding | Direct | Web
Why should anyone be force-fed advertising they don’t really care about? AdPerk CEO Barry Soicher had a neat idea: let consumers choose their own commercials in exchange for rewards. My job was to capture this upstart spirit in branding, website design and marketing materials.

Archstream Logo | Branding | Web Design
Archstream has a divergent view of radio and TV. While some see stagnation, they see sky-high potential. To the delight of station managers (and financial institutions supporting them), Archstream set out to turn broadcast media into scalable, profitable digital businesses. All they needed was a branding platform as fresh as their thinking.

Blue planet run Logo | Branding | Web Design
While “green” gets all the press, “blue” needs attention too. Teaming with Rick Smolan, creator of the bestselling Day in the Life and America 24/7 series, I helped produce Blue Planet Run: a visual study of earth’s fresh-water crisis. With over 250 photographs by the world’s top photojournalists, it focuses on challenges and solutions, and celebrates the “water heroes” who are quite literally saving the world.

Bugatti Print
The exotic EB 110 debuted for on the occasion of Ettore Bugatti’s 110th birthday. Apparently, what he started in Molsheim, France back in 1909 continues today. This proposed print and poster campaign pays tribute to the timeless beauty of Bugatti’s designs.

Guy diehl Logo | Web Design | Book Design
Guy Diehl’s paintings hang in fine art museums and collectors’ homes throughout the world. How does one brand an artist whose work includes references from traditional realism to classic modernism? My solution was a Bauhaus-inspired mark that supports an identity system from hardcover book to website.

Eden Logo | Branding
Eden designs and maintains landscapes for homeowners and businesses in the northeast, but does it with an attitude. It’s all about striking visuals that are both lowmaintenance and functional. Enfatico Logo | Branding | Print | Web Design
Every decade or so, the ad world produces another story that defies belief. The latest was Enfatico: a $4.5 billion “overnight global startup” created by WPP with Dell as its founding client. It was born in controversy and hasn’t stopped generating it since — but at least it’s doing so with a carefully designed branding system that’s present from notepad to new business pitch.

Traveling the world over a three-year period, noted photographer Mark Laita captured 120 images of the world’s most striking flowers, both the rare and the common. Unable to compete with Mother Nature’s presentation skills, I gave this 240-page hardcover book a minimalist design.

Funktion Logo | Branding
Funktion was a classic rock band from the 1970s, based in Austin, Texas. Though their music is lost to history (or was it banished?), their image lives on. As a former Austinite and music fan, this was a project near and dear to my heart. I gave the band a logo and branding platform that reflected the gritty sound that made them popular.

The Kelly Family Vineyards ships only a small percentage of Northern California’s wine, but they are amongst the leaders in passion. Pacific Color Print | Direct Mail
Multicolor offset printing for ad agencies and design firms is serious business. But when you’re interacting with creative minds, you’d better have a sense of humor.
