In this project we were each assigned a word and were to describe this word with just images. Before we got our words we were to do line drawings that conveyed specific emotions, just to get a feel for conveying a word without the use of a definition. After we had practice we were assigned a word to convey. My word was Conciliable, which means harmonious and balanced. The balanced portion of this definition is where I had my troubles, because I just wanted it to be symmetrical and it was getting too static and had no movement because of this. We were told to make a poster to represent our word using a grid, so I initially just went with a straight up grid with square pictures I had gathered. Then we were told to get rid of the squares so I just took pieces of the pictures and started arranging them. As I was going about this I was being very attentive to it being symmetrical until after our first critique and I saw how fluid these could be. Once I finally broke the grid and my symmetrical problem I finally came up with a design I liked a lot. At first I was having problems trying to figure out where to incorporate the text with the image but after a few trial and errors I finally figured it out. Project 2

Final Design
I really liked playing with the ribbons I pulled out of the dark symmetrical found design, so I used the ones I had messed with because I really enjoyed them. Then I just pulled pieces of different images that I really liked and this is how they all ended up coming together.

For this project we traced a logo using the pen tool in illustrator and we had to remake it through a series of steps. At the beginning of this I had no idea what I was going to do for my final logo. Once I started playing with my logo pulling pieces back I realized the quantity of “strands” I had and I saw a spider forming. I took this idea and ran with it and made my own spider forming and I thought he was cute. Then we were told to make sure that the new logo would still communicate with the original, so I ended up changing its legs back to the original form and I also added the original middle to the back ofthe spider like black widows have. I also just used a smaller
version of the same shape for the eyes. I feel like my new logo could be used for a variety of different things in the real world. It could be used for an exterminator service, or just a garden type organization. I didn’t really design it for a specific purpose, I just went where the wind took me on this assignment and I liked where it went so I just accepted how I got there. Some people did a whole bunch of possible sketches, but when I tried the opportunities were just so broad and I didn’t know what to do so I just started playing with it and that’s sort of how I work.

In this project we were to explore the grid. We could choose from a bunch of different grids ranging from a blank page to 4x4. Then we had to pick our favorite three and quickly just color in different shades of grey in different places and arrangement layouts to see what types of things different grids could lend themselves to. After we had played around with different layouts, one grid needed to be chosen to do our final presentations on. I chose the grid that was 4x4. These were in an 8x 8 format. We also were supposed to be finding different type specimens. These were to come from previously printed material, such as books or magazines because things like that have had someone care enough to set the type, not just throws it on the page. We actually used our hands and we had to cut out pieces and During the critiques I felt like a lot of people were going play around with moving them and gluing them down on our grids. for things that were highly designed and as I was looking at them When I was doing this process I was thinking through that these would I was noticing that a lot of them would be really hard to read if be in a magazine and be something that people would actually be it was even possible at all. So looking at the whole room full of trying to read these layouts. these bodies of work made me feel like mine were really under designed and simplistic, but at the same time I was also going for an easier read than something that you don’t even know where to begin looking at it let alone trying to read things on it.

History Project In this project we were each assigned a designer. We were to find out about our designer and make a poster to represent them in only one class period. My designer was Jurriaan Schrofer, who was part of the Psychedelic movement. I found his works very beautiful. Personally, I love bright colors and interesting shapes, and I have always been drawn to those illusionistic illustrations. When I started researching him I was plesantly suprised and excited.

Jurriaan Schrofer (1926-1990)
“Jurriaan Schrofer was one of the trend setting graphic designers of the 1950s and ‘60s. Widely recognised for his photography books, the Dutch designer also created house styles, stamps, magazines, advertisements and typefaces. Schrofer played the role of adviser, art director, teacher, author and board member in the art world.” (Jurriaan Schrofer-graphic Designer, Pioneer Of Photobooks)
Psychedelic Movement
(1958 - 1975)
Many artists in the late 1960s and early 1970s attempted to illustrate the psychedelic experience. One example of this experimentation is seen in Mati Klarwein’s painting Annunciation, which was used as the cover art for Santana’s Abraxas. The cover of Pink Floyd’s 1968 album A Saucerful of Secrets is also of this type. The cover of Oasis’ 2008 album, Dig Out Your Soul, also has a psychedelic album cover, except with a slightly muted color scheme.
“That Graphic Design is generally considered a minor art has more to do with posturing than it does with reality. The paucity of great art is no more prevalent among designers than it is among painters. To be sure there is a basic difference between Graphic Design and painting. But that difference is the one of need and deos not preclude consideration of form or quality. It merely adds more stress to the normal Difficulties entailed in producing original work” (Visible Signs)

Helvetica Helvetica is one of the most popular typefaces of all time. It was designed by Max Miedinger in 1957 for the Haas foundry of Switzerland (the name is derived from Helvetia, the Latin name for Switzerland). The design is based on the grotesques of the late nineteenth century, but new refinements put it in the sans serif sub-category of neo-grotesque. Shortly after its introduction, the Stempel foundry purchased the original Helvetica typeface and developed a full series of weights. In the 1960s Helvetica came to the United States, where alignment standards differed; Mergenthaler Linotype copied the Stempel series and then added several new versions of the design. Helvetica is an all-purpose type design that can deliver practically any message clearly and efficiently. The condensed and compressed Helvetica designs are excellent for display applications such as newspaper or newsletter headlines, billboards, and advertising. The basic design of Helvetica Rounded is the same as the design of the standard Helvetica typefaces. Designed in 1980, it differs only in the stroke endings, which are rounded rather than squared off. The overall effect of this display type is more playful and friendly than its traditional relative.
