AREAS OF EXPERTISE RIVERS, LAKES AND COASTS The human relationship between land and water has always been a strong bond. MSA applies our passion and knowledge to projects that draw people to waterfront areas through engaging, unique and resilient design. To achieve this goal, MSA helps clients visualize, fund, engineer and obtain the requisite permits to seamlessly navigate the process from start to finish.
Planning We listen to our clients and help translate concepts into reality. Understanding all the components that are needed for successful operation, we discuss your goals and conceptualize your dreams into reality through virtual 3D imaging. The ability to visualize, understand and share project details with your community in a variety of formats is invaluable in gaining project support and eliciting citizen involvement. In addition to plan sheets, our team utilizes enhanced, engaging graphics and three-dimensional illustrations to bring the plan to life and tell the story of what’s to come. These elements are valuable cost estimating tools, and helpful in marketing both new developments or renovations of existing facilities.
Funding Assistance We turn every stone to find both public and private sources to help you fund your project. MSA knows the ins and outs of a variety of funding programs and can help bundle funding sources, manage timelines, and take care of any details to satisfy fund requirements.
Engineering Marina and associated waterfront development projects are different from most upland projects. Our engineers understand the challenges and have the experience to provide sustainable and cost-effective solutions for your waterfront needs.
Permitting Obtaining permits from regulatory agencies can be a prerequisite to successfully completing a waterfront project. Our team has developed supporting data, communicated effectively with regulators, assembled applications and successfully obtained permits throughout the United States.

An open-air, flood-proof band shell is the focal part of this park, providing shelter and seating for area entertainers — music that can be heard along the river valley.
New playground built within the floodplain, yet sustainable to the poor site soil conditions. Included here are also benches, bike racks and new playground equipment.
Throughout the park, several wayfinding and park lighting safety assets were added, including: LED fixtures within the shelters, Op decorative light poles at destination points and bollards along the path.

HOW WE CAN HELP FORWARD-THINKING PLANNING
ALTERNATIVE CONCEPT DRAWING
VILAS PARK MADISON, WI Vilas Park is a jewel of the Madison Parks System. MSA is currently working with the City of Madison to prepare a Master Plan for Vilas Park to identify changes that have occurred over the first 100 years of its legacy and how current trends factor into future design. The project involves many stakeholders and focus groups, with a robust public engagement program.

Finding themselves in a stage of tremendous growth, Verona seized upon an opportunity to expand and improve Fireman’s Park. MSA developed a Master Plan for the park, with citizen input, to determine the best direction for facility improvements and a new recreational vision. Located along the shores of a highly-visited reclaimed quarry site, the park has provided a public open space for soccer, picnicking, and waterfront recreation. As the only outdoor aquatic recreation facility in the City of Verona, the beach and splash pad provide options for water lovers of all ages and abilities to cool down on hot summer days, with exciting new amenities throughout the park for Verona residents and guests to enjoy for generations to come. North and South Park Improvements Story City, IA Notable features to this park design are two overlooks on the riverbank with built-in seating and one with a fire pit in the center. There is also a walking trail around the park that connects all the improved features to the historic 1936 WPA Story City Swinging Bridge. North Park will establish a new paved trail, retaining walls for outdoor seating below the historic Story City Carousel, tennis court lighting updates to LEDs, a new shelter and stormwater improvements, along with other pedestrian amenities along the trail.
Riverfront Parks Wisconsin Rapids, WI Leading with five guiding principles: respect for the river, open access, diversified programs, economic leverage and sustainability, MSA created a space along the river that transformed three major parks along the Wisconsin River: Veteran’s Memorial Park, East River Conservancy and Demitz Park. Improvements among all parks includes a kayak launch and beach, fishing pier, park plaza, parking, riverwalk/multi-use trail, connecting walking paths, regional trail connection, picnic green, custom architectural shade structure and comfort station.
Downtown Riverwalk West Bend, WI MSA worked with the City to design an attractive, cost-effective, lowmaintenance and flood-resistant solution to enhance and reactivate the river corridor area along the Milwaukee River. This project included the area behind the City’s historic downtown and in front of the Museum of Wisconsin Art (MoWA).

TRANSIENT MARINA AND PARK MASTER PLAN OWENSBORO, KY Project included a business plan development, cost estimate preparation, and design of the downtown transient dock. This project was also awarded a Boater’s Infrastructure Grant (BIG) and was successful in winning $1.5 million in funding for the waterfront.
Newport Park Lake Delton, WI
AWARD WINNING PROJECT
MSA provided design and construction services for Newport Park, a sixacre park at the confluence of the Wisconsin River and Dell Creek. The project was a successful cooperative effort between federal, state and local agencies as well as private parties. “Bundling” several state and federal grant programs (totaling $1.4 million) reduced project costs by 65%.
Veterans Memorial Park Riverwalk Grafton, WI The Village worked with MSA to construct a 10-foot-wide, multiuse concrete path with decorative lighting, creating an attractive, low-maintenance walkway that was ADA compliant and would complement its existing riverwalk area. Because Veterans Park is also an access point for ice skating in the winter and canoeing and kayaking in the summer, the Village also sought the creation of a formal access point that accommodates all three activities.

Camp Manito-Wish YMCA Shoreline Improvements Boulder Junction, WI This quintessential northern Wisconsin camp has served the enrichment of young lives for over 100 years. Thousands of campers have engaged in on-site activities and outing trips to the flowages of the surrounding landscape. The shoreline is a buzz of activity, and through efforts of MSA, will continue to serve as a destination for swimming, sailing, kayaking, canoeing and the creation of other lifelong memories for many years to come.
Riverfront Revitalization Elkader, IA In 2008, the Turkey River surged over its banks and into Elkader’s Main Street, flooding downtown businesses and about 30 homes. Fast forward six years: now the community offers an attractive new Founders’ Park, a whitewater feature that is gaining national recognition and newly updated downtown façades. Throughout it all, MSA played a key role, working with the community to build sound infrastructure that would withstand future floods. The area is now part of the 100-year floodplain, limiting future options for the property. The City worked with the Main Street Elkader community group and many other stakeholders to transform the former neighborhood into Founders’ Park. The new 11-acre park offers recreational trails, gardens, playground equipment, shelters and other amenities including the one of two whitewater features in the State of Iowa. This new attraction is expected to draw enthusiasts from throughout the region. The whitewater feature isn’t just for whitewater enthusiasts – passers-by can enjoy watching kayakers maneuver through the whitewater from a new accessible walking path that leads to the water’s edge.
