Thank you all for sharing your information! HAVE YOU HEARD? NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD TENSION SIMMERS OVER CLIMATE LINK TO PLANT GROWTH - A surprise finding that plants are growing less quickly when, with current temperatures and CO2 levels, we might expect the opposite has come under fire from two independent groups of scientists. http://simpleclimate.wordpress.com/? s=Tension+simmers+over+climate+link+to+plant+growth JOURNAL EDITOR RESIGNS OVER CONTRARIAN CLIMATE PAPER - The editor-in-chief of the journal Remote Sensing has resigned over the publication of a paper questioning the reliability of climate models, sciencemag.org reported. Wolfgang Wagner of Vienna University of Technology concluded that reviewers of the paper, published 25 July in the open-access journal, failed "to identify fundamental methodological errors or false claims," and the paper "should therefore not have been published." http://news.sciencemag.org/scienceinsider/2011/09/journal-editor-resigns-overcontrarian.html?rss=1#.TmHPhnsPaWI.delicious SCIENTISTS DAMP DOWN WILDFIRE MYTHS - Scientists at the Pacific Wildland Fire Sciences Laboratory in Seattle, Washington, recently set out to answer that question - and to address some common myths about forest fires, and their control and prevention, New Scientist reported. In a discussion at the lab in Seattle's Fremont neighborhood, scientists who recently returned from studying the wildfires in Arizona and New Mexico started by clarifying just how common these fires are - and how infrequently they make headlines. See more at: http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/culturelab/2011/08/seattle-wildfire-scientists-snuffout-myths.html FORESTRY FUND COULD BUY IRISH WOODS IF COILLTE SPLIT UP - In Ireland, The Independent reports that as the drive to sell state assets intensifies, a spokesperson for the International Forestry Fund chaired by former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has said that it would be interested in purchasing forestry from the Irish Government, but only if Coillte was broken up as recommended in the McCarthy report. http://www.independent.ie/business/irish/berties-forestry-fund-could-buy-woods-ifcoillte-split-up-2873111.html

NEW MAP GIVES PUBLIC A GLOBAL VIEW OF BIOFUEL DEVELOPMENT – A new interactive map providing a geographical overview of biofuel production, consumption and investment around the world aims to make easier the assessing of how biofuels affect forests and people’s livelihoods and how its production can be more sustainable. The Global Biofuel Information Tool (GBIT), developed by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), with support from Profundo, is the first systematic attempt at gathering and consolidating data on biofuels and making this accessible in a user-friendly format. http://blog.cifor.org/4103/new-map-gives-public-a-global-view-of-biofueldevelopment/ FAO-SUPPORTED FOREST POLICY IN GAMBIA WINS AWARD - Gambia's Community Forestry Policy, put in place with support from the UN FAO, has won silver in the 2011 Future Policy Awards as one of the world's most inspiring and innovative forest policies. http://www.fao.org/news/story/en/item/89896/icode/ MOSCOW FOREST WITH A SURPRISE - Sometimes woods near Moscow may have much unexpected surprises. Here is, for example, an ordinary forest: bushes, grass, trees. Everything is green, living, natural. And then suddenly an electric control panel occurred from behind a tree. http://englishrussia.com/2011/09/10/forest-with-a-surprise/ BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED...
