Student Dazzles at Daycare Placement! Brampton, Ontario By: Tynika Mason On November 10, 2009, Tynika Mason spent the day at professor’s lake daycare/nursery. The 10th grade student from Sandalwood Heights secondary school was there as part of the discovering the workplace course on her job shadowing day. Anna the supervisor of the daycare quoted “Tynika was fantastic, everybody loved her”. While she was there she played with the kids, put them to sleep, zipped up there jackets and tied there shoes. The kids were about 4-5 years old. The whole point of this day was that the students participated in it was that they learned what it was like to do something similar to what they want to be when they grow up. The professor’s lake daycare/nursery is located in Brampton, Ontario. Each student that was in a GLD class on that day, had to make sure that they had
their own transportation to where they where be going to do their placement and back home. The requirements were that each student must spend a full days worth of hours, bring your lunch, have a good time, and have fun. Tynika quoted “I had a wonderful time there and I’d love to do it again if I had to”.
Get Gorgeous and Try on a Career! A Day of Job Shadowing The job of working at a beauty salon is interesting yet requires a lot of hard work. This job is hard because you have to be able to listen and understand what your client’s desire. Learning about their different likes and dislikes can be a challenge, since some clients can be quite picky. However, working in a salon is an interesting career too. This is because once you learn what the clients want, you get the chance to be creative with the designs and styles they choose. Thus, the career of a beautician is both a challenging and interesting way to get to know to know other people.
Make Your High School Years Better: Achieve Balance with the Peace sign!
This is how a typical student’s week should be divided into……
Sleep Work hrs Play
The blue area is sleep and that’s 56 hours per week. The dark purple area is work hours and that’s 50 hours per week. And last but not least is the white area is play and etc… is 56 hours per week.
Girls & Boys…There SHOULD be an equal mix! Classes should have an equal mix of girls and boys. They should be equal so that neither gender feels left out. It’s unfair to have a class that doesn’t have an equal share of girls and boys. It’s unfair to the boys and girls. For example, if there’s a class with 22 students, and there’s only 2 girls. The 2 girls in class will feel lonely. Being consistently surrounded by boys can be hard. Boys and girls have different interests at this age. It can be awkward and uncomfortable to be the only guy working with girls and vice versa. Being in a class that doesn’t have an equal mix of girls and boys decreases the number of people that have a chance to be your friend. Also, boys tend to talk only to each other these days. So clearly, classes should have an equal mix of girls and boys.
Is CO-OP an Effective Course for Students?
CO-OP is an important and valuable course which should be taken by all students in high school. For one, it gives students an exciting opportunity to experience what it is really like in the workplace. This experience allows them to further enhance their knowledge of the career paths that interest them the most. This way, when the students enter the workplace for real, they will be well prepared. Also, by taking the CO-OP course, students get the opportunity to get hired in the same place where they have completed their CO-OP! This happens because the employees learn ahead of time what the students are like and how they work. Chances are that if the student completes their CO-OP successfully, they will easily get a job placement at the same workplace. Thus, CO-OP should be considered an effective course for students to take in their high school years.

Formally, known as Job Shadowing Day, this midfall date is a day grade ten students get to visit a workplace of their choice to experience what it is really like to spend their day there. “This was a great chance for us to go into a handson environment that best interested us”, explains an excited fifteen year old, ”It also allowed us to be sure of which path we
actually wanted to take after high school.”
Most of the staff and students are already eager for this day next year because they can’t wait. As for now, if you meet up with a grade ten student, be sure to question them about their experience on Job Shadowing Day.
