ABOUT THE COMPANY Clifton Seed Company was established in 1928 to serve the small family farms and commercial growers in North Carolina. For many years, our company supplied vegetable and field seeds, as well as fertilizers to our customers. Today, we specialize in hybrid vegetable seeds from major U.S. and foreign breeder/suppliers, and serve growers throughout the country from our warehouse locations in Faison, North Carolina; Homestead, Florida; Moultrie, Georgia; and Moravia, New York. For over fifty-five years, our founder, R.D. Clifton, nurtured and guided the company toward the goals of providing good customer service, selling quality products, and maintaining a profitable, growing business. R.D. Clifton also made a notable contribution to the seed industry when, in the late 1940’s, a new strain of Dwarf Horticultural bean was detected in Duplin County, North Carolina. There is no record of how the improved strain came into existence, but Mr. Clifton was the first to recognize and distinguish its presence. The new strain grew a pod approximately two inches longer than Dwarf. Working with Associated Seed Growers, it was determined that the new strain’s longer pods were genetically constant. Associated agreed to increase the seed and make the improved variety available for use by the public. Mr. Clifton supplied the foundation seed and named the new variety Taylor Horticultural, giving the Leon Taylor family of Duplin County recognition for their important role in making this improved variety a reality. Today, the company remains a family business dedicated to maintain the high standards of quality and service set in those early years.

Sweet Corn Genotypes Today’s dramatically improved sweet corn varieties provide a wide range of choices for sweetness, disease resistance, adaptability and shipping capabilities to meet the needs of commercial and local growers. Improved taste is primarily due to the new genes that improve sugar levels. Standard (Su) or Normal hybrids contain the sugary gene and are still among the most popular corn varieties for roadside and home gardens. These varieties contain 9-16% sugar and produce tender, sweet ears; however, the sooner cooked the better the quality as the sugar in Su varieties will quickly turn to starch if the corn is allowed to stand in the field or is not rapidly cooled after picking. Isolate from field, pop corn and Sh2 varieties. Sugary Enhanced (Se) varieties have a higher sugar level and are generally considered the most tender because kernels have a very thin pericarp. Varieties with the Se gene will convert sugar to starch like a Su variety, but will retain a sweet flavor longer because sugar levels are higher to begin with. There are two types of Se varieties: homozygous varieties that have higher sugar levels (20-35%) in 100% of their kernels and heterozygous varieties that have higher sugar levels in 25% of their kernels and normal levels in 75% for a combined level of 14-22% sugar. Homozygous varieties are usually sweeter, but must be handled more gently because the thin pericarp means they are more likely to be injured by machine harvest. Isolate from field, pop corn and Sh2 varieties. Synergistic (Sy) varieties combine the exceptional tenderness and flavor of the Se genotype with the sweetness and holding ability of the Sh2 genotype at a rate of 3 Se kernels to 1 Sh2 kernel. The resulting varieties are sweet and tender with increased shelf life but are not recommended for long haul shipping or processing. Examples include Rogers Brand TripleSweet® (Tswt) and TripleSweet® Plus (Tswt+). Isolate from field corn, ornamental, popcorn and Sh2 varieties. Sh2 – Shrunken (Supersweet) varieties carry the Sh2 gene that restricts the conversion of sugar to starch allowing growers more time to get product to market and consumers more time to enjoy their sweet corn. Supersweets have a crunchier texture and very high sugar levels (28-44%). Sh2 varieties must be isolated from other types of field corn and sweet corn to develop. Kernels should not be planted too deep and for best emergence, soil temperatures should be at least 60° F at time of planting. Augmented Sh2 is the new generation of Supersweet types. Like regular Supersweet varieties, they contain the Sh2 gene, but kernels of augmented shrunken are extra juicy and tender like sugary enhanced (Se) varieties. Kernels should not be planted too deep and for best emergence, soil temperatures should be at least 60° F at time of planting. ATTRIBUTE® insect-protected hybrids from Syngenta Seeds are sweet corn varieties that have been genetically enhanced to provide strong protection against damage by European corn borers, corn earworms and fall army worms. Growers wishing to plant ATTRIBUTE® sweet corn varieties are required to sign a Grower Stewardship Agreement before purchasing seed. Form can be found in Price Guide section of this catalog. ATTRIBUTE II® The Attribute II trait stack from Syngenta is the latest breakthrough in above-ground insect protection for sweet corn, delivering exceptional control of lepidopteran pests to maximize yield, quality and productivity. In addition to high-level insect protection, Attribute II sweet corn varieties offer beneficial herbicide tolerance to glyphosate and glufosinate herbicides approved for application over the top of Attribute II sweet corn. Seed products with the LibertyLink (LL) trait are resistant to the herbicide glufosinate ammonium, an alternative to glyphosate in corn, and combine high-yielding genetics with the powerful, non-selective, postemergent weed control of Liberty herbicide for optimum yield and excellent weed control. Attribute®, Touchdown HiTech®, Touchdown Total®, TripleSweet™, and the Syngenta logo are trademarks of a Syngenta Group Company. *Footnote to sweet corn: the effectiveness of rust resistance genes in sweet corn will be determined by the variation of common rust races in each growing environment. Rust races are continually evolving, so that rust resistance genes that were effective in the past may suddenly and unexpectedly lose their effectiveness. It is necessary to scout for rust disease development, so that alternative disease control strategies can be deployed in the event that major gene resistance proves ineffective. For further information, see http://www.worldseed.org/isf/diseases_resistance.html.
